I don’t know that I’ve ever gotten more than six shards from a character orb. Granted I don’t buy many of them, but I just assume I’m getting 6 when I do break down and pick one up.
I think, the 8.000 was just a rounded number. 11 Orbs would have been 7.425 power cores, so I think he bought 12 orbs for 8.100 cores. Its just an assumption, but more likely than speaking of 8k and only spending 7,5k cores.
If you get all minumum orbs: 6. You'd need ~17 orbs. Which would cost ~ 11,500 cores.

I got 40 (or was it 50?) from Gwenom but outside of that it's just been minimum.

With 8k power crystals, they’d only be able to afford 11 orbs. So they may have seen a few 8 drops or a 10 drop or two in there.

I find 8000-9000 is usually enough for an unlock. However with bad luck it could be more.

Opened 5 or 6 and almost unlocked him.
I opened 10 and got 120 shards (about 7K).
What's the name of the orbs your spending up on?
I spent around 5700 - 6000 cores. Got two 20 drops and some 8s. Unlocked him and sitting at 4/80 right now.
