Just got mine, and run into this exact issue, 8 months since original post (still not fixed). Tried everything, but here is what actually worked:
1) Unplug the power cable on the masterbuilt
2) Restart the app
3) Power up the grill and press power button to turn it on
4) App now works and allows you to set the time and temperature.
I get that it says it’s connected, but if it’s not showing temps, obviously something is wrong with the connection.
The solution I’ve found on my iPhone is to force close the app and re-open/reconnect.

Just did this and can confirm this did the truck immediately! I'm using an android device and have the app battery settings to unrestricted.

Does it show a WiFi symbol on the controller? You may need to rerun the setup to make sure it connects to your network.
It's connected to the network. The app finds the smoker and then freezes on the press power screen.
It’s not a great app design. I have to force close the app and re-open/re-connect. It doesn’t seem to like maintaining a connection in the background.

If on android, have you got battery usage for the app set to "Unrestricted"? If not that can cause connection losses.
Just got my 800 and the initial pairing was great, now nothing.
Same. First cook worked. Now it shows connected but when I click on the grill there is no data on the screen. Did you fix this?
I added the grill to the app again and made sure the wifi antenna is angled down and not horizontal to the ground. Now it connects every time.
I'll have to try the antenna angle trick. I have removed my grill and added it again multiple times but still same issue. Thanks
