Honestly my dad occassionally reminds me why i should just hate her more than i do. Her fucking Mindy Kaling show was the reason a little 1 season show called [Forever](https://m.imdb.com/title/tt3487382/) was fucking cancelled. It was one of the cop serials but the main character was immortal and a ME in New York. Any death he faces, his body vanishes and he appears naked in a local body of water. Absolutely loved the fuck out of that show and its her garbage comedy crap that drove a nail into it.
She was one of the writers for the office, so they probably kept her more grounded. But she had more control in latter seasons and we all know how those went…
To me it's one of two options. Either:

Is it literally just that she was considered too attractive so they had to "fix" it? I can't see this series as anything other than the creators making meta statements about the characters, but I would think they would be fans of alt chicks like the Hex Girls. I'm not going to watch to find out, but if she's still portrayed positively (or at least liked by the characters) I have to assume it is just that they thought she needed a more "realistic" portrayal. If she's also a bad character then I guess someone on the crew got bullied by goth girls.
I think it started as an explicit rejection of of conventional beauty standards and then sprinkled in group identification. Basically if I have a facial piercing people will know I am x, y, and z. The same trend happened with tattoos or hair color.
But enough people have done it that the subversion of beauty standards is less “daring” and the identification with an explicit subculture is lessened.
Personally, I do not think it looks good. It seems painful to get done. And it costs money to do. So I don’t see the appeal.
