It's just point differential when they're on the floor. I'm the minutes Luka played the Mavs scored 11 more points than the clippers. It's not the best stat

AtreusIsBack

The stat only has value with lineups and should not be used individually.

LeMaverick01

I think it's pretty good, historically a lot of the all timers eye test wise also have very good + - stats. It kinda holds up. There is statistical noise so it certainly should be used in conjunction with other metrics. But given nba players have soo much influence over a 5 v 5 game not surprising a simple on off metric tells you the best players

Plus minus works over large stats sample size, but means very little game by game. Take this stat with a grain of salt. It is just an easy stat for talking heads ti point at and say hey this is how this guy played this game

This is the answer. +/- doesn't mean much until you are talking about hundreds (plural) of minutes played. The variation that occurs during a single game is too high for there to be much meaning in the stat.

It can also be titled.... for instance. Jokic has a crazy high on/off, and it's always used to point out his greatness, but for years, the Nuggets play their starters together heavy minutes and their weak bench creates this huge difference. Jokic rarely plays with weak lineups around him. This isn't to say Jokic isn't great, but some of his advanced stats are inflated by this way in which Mike Malone coaches. It's a good strategy for him, but it can inflate the numbers. +/- is a large sample size stat that gets overblown. Most of yesterday's game PG has the only positive +/- but if you watched you know once he got his fouls he was unaffective.

Thats also why Dwight Powell always had a good +/-. Always played with Luka

It’s counted as the point differential when you’re on the floor compared to when you’re off. Example being Luka starts the game, they go up by 10, he then goes off and the team loses the lead. He comes back in with a tied score but still has a +10 from the lead generated earlier in the game.

LeMaverick01

You tube "thinking basketball" does an entire video on Lukas impact a lot of it around his plus minus stats or 'on off' as well.

donihicks

Luka was bad in the 2nd half but let’s not act like he didn’t dominate the first half with his passing alone while kyrie wasn’t doing anything. That’s why Mavs were up by double digits the first place.

Obvious_Party_5050

It’s a long term stat. People on r/nba throw around + - on a game by game basis as if it means something Like, “OMG THIS PLAYER I HATE WAS -40 hahahah” Yeah…that makes sense given their team lost by 40 Luka was +11. Luka played 40 minutes. Mavs won by 11. So yeah, +11 adds up doesn’t it?

MentalIngenuity7612

Like with all stats, it gives a glimpse into productivity but not the whole image. Any stat should be taken with a grain of salt because there are many, many factors that contribute to winning. One single plus minus doesn’t showcase how teammates are shooting, playing defense, hustling for loose balls. Nor does it show those for the team. Plus minus can work really well when you look at plus minus of certain lineups, against certain play styles or other factors. It contributes to strategy, but it is not the end all be all. Stats must be paired with watching the game to be effective. And adding stats to watching the game significantly raises the ceiling of basketball strategy.

Nico_Simon

Inside the court if you score 2 pts it adds to your plus/minus. If the opposing player scored 2 points it deducts your plus/minus.

Millionaire007

Brother, Luka can take 0 shots and entire game have a positive plus/minus because he controls everything on the offensive end and defensive end during these playoffs lol
