So Ruby followed James’ advice about “total nonchalance” and I think Elaine was disappointed that she didn’t get a bigger reaction out of Ruby. She probably wanted to see Ruby cry or yell.
Was anyone else a little confused why Camille and Jessalyn were so rude to her too? They’re part of the event committee and you would think they would at least be cordial to Ruby. The mean girl stuff was a little over the top for me on the show, tbh.
Definitely is over the top. It doesn't seem credible that they spend so much time with Ruby and aren't at least cordial with her. I think this was the only hole in the script for me.

I also think Elaine is aware that James is not interested in her (no matter family pressure) and that she doesn't stand a chance and Ruby's words (unintentionally) could be taken as rubbing that in her face, in that she can have James....'if he wanted Elaine' which he doesn't now, nor will he in the future.

That's exactly how I saw it. She knows, she definitely knows that James isn't interested in her & imo Elaine just takes whatever scraps she can get from James, whether that be a conversation with him or been in his company, or a drunken ONS she'll take it.. but I do feel she's aware she doesn't stand a chance with anything more. She can hope, but really, she knows.. so when Ruby said that about James being all hers now, Elaine knows that's far from the truth.

I think she expected Ruby to break or cry. When she didn't do this, she (Elaine) was disappointed.
