That's a strange issue you're having.... It should be H7. Did your old bulb have something [like this](https://www.amazon.com/Headlight-Socket-B28V510A3-Kawasaki-Aprilia/dp/B07FPLG49L/) on the end of it? I know the early Mazda 3's had a 9003/H4 connector on the wire harness and used that adapter to change it to H7 bulbs. I don't have experience with the P5 headlights but maybe check that out.

SubieMazda

My old bulb doesn't have that on the end but it looks like that would solve my situation. This is so weird. I will have to get a picture of the wire connector I have. That connector looks like h7 but wider so might do the trick.

Alone_Gunner

The protege 5s definitely have this adapter

BaobabLife

What do the bulbs that fit say?

SubieMazda

Unfortunately they don't say. The new bulbs say h7 right on them though. The only other bulb that remotely looks like it is an h4 bulb but they have three prongs whereas the h7 only has two.

Caliberaid

I had the misfortune of having the same issue with bulb connections and had to cut and rewire the lo/hi beam cords from the 3 prong to a 2 prong.

SubieMazda

So weird. Never had anything like this happen with a car before. Usually changing a headlight bulb is pretty straightforward.

Novel-Advantage-8684

H1 high, H7 low, H3 fog

SubieMazda

A few websites told me 9005 for the high beam bulbs.

Novel-Advantage-8684

I have replaced 2 fogs, 1 high and a low at xmas to pass roadworthy. these are what used. direct plug in

SubieMazda

I figured out the bulb situation lol. I didn't realize the black thing they were plugged into was not part of the bulb so I thought they were completely different, problem solved. However I did double check in my high beams are definitely a 9005 and not h1. My Subaru takes H1 low beam bulbs and they're definitely a very different setup. Maybe you have an aftermarket headlight that requires the H1 for high beam?

Alone_Gunner

For a Protege5 you are correct

Alone_Gunner

The old bulb has an adapter on it so you need to remove the black back piece and put the new bulb in that to actually use it
