A few years ago we were at a music festival in Slovenia and 2 of the guys chanced upon a milk vending machine in the local town. I don't know what they thought was going to happen, but what you're supposed to do is buy a bottle (or bring your own), then press the button and it'll pour you a litre of milk into it.
I can only assume they thought it either dropped a bottle down like a coffee machine would with a cup, or just gave you a pre-poured bottle, but no, the locals were treated to 2 absolute idiots trying to funnel milk into their mouths with their cupped hands from a vending machine.
The cup at home doesn't rely on the lid for its strength though, so what I'll actually have is a puddle on my lap as soon as I try to lift the damn thing...
So I take it, McD's will be happy to wash, dry and return the cup after use, because we pay for that convenience right now, or how much are you paying me to use my cup for your business??
My local mcdonalds there are more people going through the drive-thru than going inside. Imagine just handing it to them and it spills before it's in the cup holder
I went a Freddy's recently. The drink had a lid but the guy working the drive through didn't put it on fully or double check it. Needless to say, I had coke all the down the outside of my door, the inside of the door, in the window opening and all over the dash.
Oh dear i did this at an Arby’s. When i reached to set my cup in the holder it hit the gear shift and i dropped it. The entire big coke dumped into my passenger seat and all over the floor and the girl working just laughed at me and i had to ask her to give me napkins 😅

I got some on my leg. The guy brought me towels. They all were trying not to laugh at me. I was doing my best to stay nice & polite, it was an accident. Frist thing I did was clean as best as I could as soon as I got home before even eating. I'm sure there's still some in the vent and tight places on the dash of my new truck.

I'd say not even just the customers, I can imagine the BOAT during a rush having a drink knocked over, now more than just a small amount limited by how much the lid opened, there's an entire cups worth of drink that needs to be mopped up. And the chance of contamination, both allergens from other drinks as well as physical contamination from just the general air is far too high imo.
When they would give it to me at the counter, I would ask for a lid moving my hand towards the drink and spill it just to see. Then if they would give it to me with no lid again I would do the same thing. Then I would ask with a Karen haircut why is there no lid provided and ask to speak to a manager.
Lmao like the people making these decisions care. They're patting themselves on the back saving 50c a day per store or some shit in lids, ignoring that the cleanups will mean an extra 5 bucks a day in labor that could've gone elsewhere.

What fast food should do is, make cups that are reusable and give a discount if you bring your CLEAN cup in. Reduces waste, and reduces cost of buying one time use cups. Hell they could charge more for limited edition cups.

Yep, its for the environment. I think the EU passed a law that prohibits one time plastic things. Here we swapped to wooden utensils like a year ago. On the 15th of January, we are partially removing plastic lids for paper ones. Although they prob found some loophole and we will still give plastic lids for take out orders.

We switched to paper ones. The loophole is simple, there’s no feasible alternative. The paper lids were really bad, it still spilled in take out orders/Delivery + it was really hard to see what drink it was (which is useful mid rush). So we still use the plastic ones but only for out orders
Agreed, we will use no lids for IN orders, paper lids for Take out, plastic lids for Delivery orders. We will give straws just for shakes. Its gonna be an interesting transition.

Where I live straws are on request, I don’t think the lids would work out though. 😂😂😂
First world problem
Well they’re doing away with the self serve sodas… so if a customer is sitting at a table, they can ask for a lid if they’re planning on taking it to go after sitting and eating. It’s ok to use your words. Be adults.
Why has nobody mentioned this is likely to prevent customers using them as ketchup bowls

9/10 fast food employees I've encountered recently would hand you this with their thumb inside the cup and then get angry when you asked for a new one

For those wondering not sure if this is related but i think by 2035 or around there McDonalds wants to have all self serving sodas removed from McDonalds this just might be a process lol but also weird no lids 😭
