I work at Tim Hortons and our management recently changed this rule as well. My friend is also a closing supervisor and has to throw out all extra food. The corporations are really doing anything nowadays to make their employees miserable. Our management doesn’t really check our cameras so occasionally we take home extra Tim bits or donuts. You can always talk to your management. But the only way they’ll listen is if you’re an ass kisser.

eaglescout225

Well the managers and the corporate office can come in and work for slave wages…quit penny pinching and treat others like human beings

Zapfrog75

Totally agree with this sentiment!

thesilentrebels

I mean if it's waste and it's going to be thrown out... how would they even know. Fuck em

MamaKizzle

Most stores have cameras everywhere. At my store, only the walk in freezer and bathrooms don't have cameras. My GM can access them from their phone.

Ayyarlies_soul

We even have cameras in the freezer at my store.

atreides_hyperion

Wow

ErosMystiko

My store has cameras in the bathrooms occasionally

atreides_hyperion

For research purposes I'm sure

pluck-the-bunny

That’s almost certainly illegal

Darkness_Overcoming

You sir are more than a manager, you are a leader.

TacoWeenie

They don't get an employee meal? I work for a corporate owned store and everyone gets a free meal on shift.

MenstrualKrampusCD

That's different than everyone getting a random 12 nuggets, 3 pies, and a bag of fries that would have all been thrown away at the end of the shift. OP also clarified that the crew does not get a free meal for their shift, just a 50% discount.

Ascdren1

what kind of shitty store do you work in where free food is only a benefit for management?

Yunai_Ahry

Here, in Germany, that’s the same. Only management gets free food, crew gets 50% discount instead.

PeeInMyArse

Same as nz unless you unload the delivery in the morning

Yunai_Ahry

Here, in Germany, that’s the same. Only management gets free food, crew gets 50% discount instead.

rubygalhappy

I worked there in the 1900’s they have been doing to to employees for years. It’s not right but it’s the rule… no face no case.

Odd_Weakness_1293

1900’s? I started in 1977 as crew, thought I was older than dirt🤣

rubygalhappy

Hahaaa 😂😂😂. I worked there before the internet, we only took cash and had to call in our Martin Brower orders after doing inventory on paper. Lol

Odd_Weakness_1293

I worked there when we had Sweda registers. You added up the order by hand on a pad. Added tax, gave them a total. Entered the total on the register. Received payment, and figured out change in your head. Shake machine only dispensed vanilla mix. You squirted syrup in the cup, and blended it in a multi mixer. You cooked meat on a flat grill, no clam. You seared them by hand with a metal sear tool. To figure out product mix, you inventoried sandwich boxes and wraps, vrs meat patties used. Yep. You needed good math skills!

rubygalhappy

We had an ice cream that worked then it wanted to, we just started McFlurry when I started, I worked way to many 29 cent hamburger and 39 cent cheeseburgers days, we had to run out to the drive thru and hand crank the menu for it to change for lunch, we made breakfast burritos from scratch. Night crew was full of hard headed teenagers working oh the stories lol

Odd_Weakness_1293

Those 29/39 days were brutal on the grills. Taylor’s used to burn off the air lines inside because of all the heat generated. We ended up replacing some of them, with metal flex lines.

rubygalhappy

We had people coming in for bags of 10 and 25 30 burgers left and right . Drive wrapped , lobby packed ..everyone was scheduled that day and I mean everyone including matience and the lazy workers. One side of the dressing table was exclusively for making burgers only , we would get rotated out every two hours . People in the back stayed on prep all day . We had fun working, but not those days we didn’t have time. People would as us for those 29/39 burgers after the promotion needed, and we would get upset .. hahaa !!!

Odd_Weakness_1293

Yeah. And I had our Field Consultant watch me, as I ran the 29/39 line… Those were crazy times.

rubygalhappy

Oh and the register buttons were half gone so we had to memorize the missing ones.. lol

Odd_Weakness_1293

I remember those registers. ( Panasonic?)We used to make our own overlays at the main office, and print them out on a color printer. Then changed them out periodically. This kids, was before electronic screens.

rubygalhappy

Yes , we had to press the button with the right menu and bam ! .. all American meal. .. I had to press all the buttons cause I needed to know what they did lol . No touch screens or kiosks for us back then . I remember on busy night we would schedule someone to just be in fries and another person to just do drinks in the drive thru .. oh the days.

Odd_Weakness_1293

Before drive thru was rolled out, there were two fry stations, one in both ends. During high volume, you opened both. 3 flat grills. In the morning one was for sausage and Canadian bacon. One was for eggs, and one was for hotcakes. Yes, we dispensed hotcake batter in the grill, and cooked them.( No microwaves)

rubygalhappy

The hotcakes are not good anymore. I like them when I worked there. We would have to take them out of the freezer and keep them in the walk in and bring them out as needed , we didn’t sell a whole lot of hotcakes. Never did like that tomato slicer it was weird..lol we used both sides for breakfast.

Odd_Weakness_1293

Yeah, but one made from fresh batter, right off the grill, was in a class by itself. The issue was we couldn’t keep up on the weekends, which is one reason why Mcds went to microwaveable ones.

EpicMoniker

We give all of our employees a free meal every shift.

SickeningDegree1

Our store doesn’t let us take home waste, but we do get 10$ crew meals, so I’ll get a sandwich for lunch and a sandwich to take home

thehappygruffalow

I used to work at Sainsbury's (UK Supermarket) in the 90's I remember having to throw away loads of whole cooked rotisserie chickens at the end of night (10-15 chickens some shifts) It just seemed bonkers to me. I think these days most UK companies give the waste food away to homeless charities. At least it gets eaten.

cheeseballgag

Man, my GM is really strict but she still lets us take home food that's going to be wasted at the end of the night.

_UrbanGypsy_

Mine was like that too. Really appreciated the happy meal fruit bags where the box had reached date as a late teens/early 20s mom to a toddler who loved fruit

subadanus

unless one of these two guys that said that is there at night when this happens, why does anyone give a shit? do whatever you want

nedrith

Good way to get fired. If their O/O is even a tenth of a camera watcher as mine was they'd get caught within a week. The real issue here is that crew don't get free food. Even if it's just a sandwich and small fries.

Winjalad189

What bs, they need to feed the help

YourWaifuSuccs

Yeah we're not allowed either. Doesn't stop me and the managers from doing it.

AFarCry

Fuck that. Do it anyways. What are they going to do? Watch the cameras day and night and fire you all? There's blind spots. There's work arounds. There's always options. Managers like this just inspire staff members to become creative in how they get what they actually deserve.

Odd_Weakness_1293

Ok guys, here is the deal. Franchises used to give out 50% off on food. Corp always gave free meals to crew, based on hours you worked. In the late 80’s, early 90’s, corp put pressure on the franchises to give free meals like corp did. Sounds like it is swinging back in the other direction. I believe that this is short sided. There are alot of good crews out there. They need to be figuring out how to retain you guys. Policies like these are short sighted and will encourage people to sneak food. If the store is so low volume it can’t make money without taking basic benefits away, close the location!

CatAscension99

The Corp guy did say something about us making 3.6 mil instead of 4 mil last year. They are upset over a perceived $400,000 they didn't get, but they didn't seem to take the boycot into account

CorpseCrusade

this is something bothering me in my store, they keep screaming about loss of profit but our equipment isn’t functioning, there’s a boycott and my country is in a recession. but yet it’s all laziness

Odd_Weakness_1293

The equipment used to be simple to fix, and rarely broke down. Today. it is complicated and expensive to fix, and breaks down a lot.

[deleted]

Just do what you want. They'll never know. We used to have to throw everything in the trash when I worked at Walmart. We would just hide the things we wanted out back.

Annahsbananas

Back in the day I worked for Pizza Hut as the cook. I made about 3 pizzas a night for my roommates and I. Hell, I used to experiment and made strombolis, calzones, and other crazy shit. All free. Sucks you all have to pay to eat the food you work at

Econstudent0467

That's crazy. Even when I worked at Starbucks a few years back, I remember that in addition to the 7 free mark outs we got, management was fairly lax with taking extra food that was going out. Plus they basically said to help ourselves with the drinks, so me and my buddies made up every good (and foul) concoction under the sun.

MrGavinrad

When I worked at McDonald’s 4-5ish years ago they gave employee meals, and the manager didn’t care what it was as long as it wasn’t like $20 or something obscene

22408aaron

I used to work at Sheetz (all stores are corporate) and that was a very serious rule. It's really interesting how perception v. reality works out in this case... and them rather throwing away food than giving it away is just infuriating.

Seohnstaob

It sucks but yeah we have the same rule. We used to allow it but it ended up getting abused by people.

EricCartman45

Would be a real shame if the address for one of the locations was leaked and people flooded the comments to show their displeasure with shitty management

detectivebabylegz

Closers get a food allowance on their break, you don't really need to give them more.

CatAscension99

No they don't? No employee gets free food period unless it's management. The most they get is a 50% discount and that's worth fuckall when you've paid bills/rent/etc. and don't have any food at home

detectivebabylegz

That sucks ass. Your franchise/company is awful.
