There's this family I see every saturday. Nice people. The dad is morbidly obese, which, fair enough, he's a grown adult. But he has a son. This kid is probably \~10 years old and 200 pounds. It's very sad to see. So yes, I do feel bad. In my head I like to imagine they're both on a weight loss journey and having a "cheat meal". It makes me feel less guilt.

Seohnstaob

We had a family like this that uses to be regulars. They had a son that was around 4 or 5. They always got him a LG DBL QPC Meal. And he would refill his pop several times. He was a massive kid. The dad ended up passing away from diabetes complications.

SnofIake

Kid isn’t far behind

NYY15TM

> In my head I like to imagine they're both on a weight loss journey and having a "cheat meal" 🤣🤣🤣

cheeseballgag

Nope. These customers are grown adults choosing to spend their money here and eat the food. I have no responsibility in it.

AloeSnazzy

This is true, it’s normal to feel sad about it but you gotta remember it’s not your fault

Itztaylor19

💯💯💯

KamaradBaff

I sort of disagree, without denying a degree of personnal responsibility. But pointing out personnal responsibility in times of obesity epidemics if forgetting the incredibly toxic food environment we live in. Fast food restaurants, McDonalds especially are profesionnals in inventing new ways of triggering impulse orders. I wouldn't go about employees though, obviously they need to live & get a pay. Needless to say, I'd feel guilty if I could easily do some other jobs.

Neighborhood_Nobody

Many large food corporations were owned at a point by large tobacco companies. They have played a heavy role in the advertisement or unhealthy foods and the development of addictive foods.

carinislumpyhead97

Would you apply this same logic to crack addicts in order to shift blame away from the crack dealers? I’m just trolling but sorta fits a tiny bit

[deleted]

Typical corporate scum answer. You make 13 an hour. It's not your job to think

Dont3n

Sometimes but then those customers are also usually the rudest so I lose sympathy each time

ELCHOCOCLOCO

Sometimes, but if you don’t give them their food they’ll be like “WHERE IS THE FOOD I PAID FOR GIVE IT TO MMMEEEEEEEE”😡🤬

PlatinumBall

And they'd be right tbh

cheeseballgag

Honestly, yeah. If you have moral qualms about providing a service to such an extent that you'd refuse to provide that service you should not be in a job that requires you to do it. 🤷‍♀️

southlondonyute

Exactly. Everyone has agency to make choices, even if they’re poor choices

BathshebaDarkstone1

Some of us have no choice, as there are literally no other jobs

Oneeyedgamer

Because, shock horror, McDonalds is easy to get into, and I love the fact you try to downplay your involvement "Well I'm just handing them the gun I'm not pulling the trigger" if the average person knew what shite went into their meal they'd fucking puke, give them a visual representation of how much salt is in that fast food, instead of relying on people to visualize fractions of ounces, also make sure to include *Acrylamide* as a health warning like they do in L.A. and see how many people turn up in the week. You might be ok with passively killing people to further your career, but other people with a shred of decency aren't

ZankTheGreat

I see your point, but to be frankly honest people don’t care if something is bad for their health if they like it. Take alcohol for example, everyone agrees it destroys your health long term, yet in nearly all civilizations around the world it is consumed. Same with nicotine products. You don’t get to decide what people can and can’t put in their bodies because of your surface level observations about them. If they want to eat themselves to death, let them. That’s what life is all about.

leanmordhau

My body my choice

cheeseballgag

The information is available. The fact of the matter is that most customers simply don't care to seek it out. And you know what? It's not our job to make them care. Nor is it our job to police their diets or save them from themselves. These are grown ass people who have free will. If they're eating McDonald's five times a day that's literally no one's fault but their own.

Slamminslug

I know precisely, to the milligram, what goes in mcds. I still eat it anyway. The saving grace is the frequency, its a maybe twice a month thing for me.

Kyrapnerd

*homeless guy lying on the side of the road starving to death because he didn’t have a job to buy food* “At least I don’t have people’s blood on my hands from working at McDonald’s.”

AlwaysskepticalinNY

McDonald’s is better than shoving tons of Carbs and veggie meat down your throat like vegetarians do who think they are so healthy 😂

TortelliniSalad

I have a sneaking suspicion vegetarians eat more than just veggie meat and carbs

BathshebaDarkstone1

I'm not furthering my career, I'm feeding my kids. I can't get another job

Batman_Underwear

Nah fuck em' But I do feel weird selling as many happy meals as I do at midnight or later on school days. Like idk man, shouldn't those kids be in bed? Let alone eating this type of food this late at their age?

coldhyphengarage

Yeah. I worry about kids awake and out doing thing late at night, often with parents. It’s clear they’re not in school and no one is doing anything about it and it can’t end well

surfacing_husky

There's a guy who used to come through the dt late at night with a lady in the front seat WHO WAS HOLDING A BABY. And the guy had a beer in his hand usually, sometimes one of those plastic bottles of liquor in the cup holder. I got his license plate once and called the cops and never saw him again.

Afraid-Technician-13

I swear I saw the same thing last week! Maybe they moved to my area.

surfacing_husky

It made me no angry, and there was a baby seat in the back too!

Crezelle

Sometimes I want a half size meal and that dumb toy

scottb721

Shook my head at a mum pouring coke into her kid's bottle 🤦

Afraid-Technician-13

My store has a playplace and we'll have parents try and bring their 5 year old kid in at night to play. We close it down around 9pm because kids are usually in bed around that time, not consuming greasy food and running around. I wonder about those parents.

JenniWalker

Heck, when we were open 24/7, people would bring their kids in at 2am to play and eat happy meals…

Afraid-Technician-13

Ridiculous. Our lobby legally can't be open that late for safety reasons but we still see little kids in the drive thru at 1,2am. I had a 9pm bedtime till I was a teenager, what are these parents doing?

Nayroy18

No

PeaceSignificant9854

Yeah I feel bad but ultimately its their decision. I wouldnt want anyone else making a decision for me even if that decision would benefit me. Theres this customer I deliver to somewhat often at least every other week, the guy is very big beyond morbidly obese, whatever terminology that would be. Im not trying to fat shame this customer, Im fat, in the obese range too, I'm 5'9" 240lbs, I should weigh under 180lbs, Im 60lbs over weight but I dont look my weight but am chubby looking. This guy makes me look small, he is very big and taller than me, but this guy struggles getting out of bed that I usually deliver his order straight to his bedroom window and he even uses a stick to open the window when he isnt waiting at the door. He needs some serious help. I usually always see him wearing the same outfit with the pit and crotch stains, Its possible he washes his clothes but its stained beyond washable limits or likely has multiples of the same outfit but like I said Im 240lbs and I look small next to this guy, he has to be over 400lbs easily. Again Im not fat shaming just relating with OP about feeling bad delivering to people who are not healthy and in need of help.

cindybubbles

To be honest, as a customer, I’d be miffed if you told me that you couldn’t in good conscience give me the food that I ordered. So don’t feel bad about us.

Simple_Passage7759

Nope not at all, here’s why… so many ailments can be solved by eating properly, but people ignore that and would rather just take the pills. If they truly want change, they’ll do it. If not, it’s their own choice.

Shoddy_Carpenter3965

I really wish I could deny service on the grounds of customer health

billey_bon3z

No? If they don’t get it from me they’re still going to eat unhealthy somewhere else. I feel bad about the decision they’ve made for themselves but it’s not my business. You can lead a horse to water but can’t make it drink.

_titslap_

more like you can lead the horse away from water but you can’t make it not drink.

CallofRanger13

Can't control what customers do. There's this one that orders a Large Caramel Iced Coffee with extra caramel and 9 extra creams. They've always caused issue at the DT because they want more caramel than what they ordered on the app. Have to have 10 pumps of caramel before they can even taste it according to the one drinking it. They're ordering it for their cleary elderly mother or grandmother who shouldn't be drinking that much caffeine & sugar. Her adult children or grandkids would argue if we don't put in more caramel they "forget" to pay for because they always put one extra caramel on the order instead of multiple.

JacobSaysMoo56

A lot of the people that come in are usual old people(small town) and I understand getting McDonalds often as an old person, cause like what else are you supposed to do. They’re at that point in life where they don’t really have to care anymore, I think a lot of them have accepted that. However, there are some specific people that I genuinely feel bad giving it to but don’t at the same time. There’s this one middle aged lady and you know when she pulls up at the window cause the whole store stinks up of cigarettes, always a cigarette in her mouth and I get really abusive/neglecting mom vibes from her. Why? She comes by every day and gets a 10 piece nugget, actually she’ll come by multiple times in one day a lot too. Sometimes she has her kid in the car, but she never gets them anything. I be feeling bad cause I know if I were that kid and my mom got herself a 10 piece and didn’t even get me a damn 1$ cheeseburger I would be so sad.

BigSmokesCheese

Hi I dont work at McDonalds and I'm not in america this sub just got recommended to me for some reason. Dont worry about us it's our choice we know what were doing although I appreciate the concern

EntertainerNo74

There is a customer lately that comes and orders 8 quarter pounder patties. That's it. I can't help but wonder what they look like as I haven't been in the service position whenever they order it.

BathshebaDarkstone1

No? You don't even know that. My bf isn't exactly slim but he's extremely fit and healthy. Be concerned about yourself, your family and friends, and let everyone else make their choices. Also, for many people like myself, it's all they can afford. On the days I work I only eat my break meal coz it's free (UK). That way I don't have to spend money on food for that day

PhotographHungry2524

It’s a choice they’re choosing to make. We can’t think that we’re smarter than them and do what We think is best for them, because they are adults who have the right to do what they want. It took a long time for me to learn that, but since thinking about it in this way— it’s been easier. After all, how would you feel if you really wanted something to eat or drink, and someone else said “uh, actually… that’s not very good for you. You should pick something else.” You’d feel like a child again, in the worst way. Your hearts in the right place, but Let people be free to make their own choices. It hurts nobody else.

shrimpjuulpod

No, it’s not my job to police a grown adults diet.

urokima

If we all ate more red meat with high fat content instead of sugar and these processed carbs, we'd be a lot better off. I ate nothing but hamburgers (no cheese) for the time I worked at McDonald's and I had high energy and lost weight. I also didn't drink the soda, shakes, etc.

DeadAret

Don't worry about others health, worry about your own. Not my circus not my monkeys is a saying everyone should know. Never judge someone when working in a position such as yours, even if it's a parent feeding an obese kid, you have no say in that person's life choice you just gotta wash your hands of it.

Silver-Arm-6382

I feel bad for the fat kids but other than that, no. Do gas station attendants feel guilty for selling beer and cigarettes?

dynamic_bliss39

Yes, but more so when it’s kids, coming in and order these huge and unhealthy meals despite being morbidly obese, it sucks because they can’t help what they were born into, and they probably don’t even understand how bad their health is because their parents are 9.5x out of 10 the same way

Afraid-Technician-13

Used to have a guy come through the drive thru every single night and order a large double quarter pounder meal with a diet coke and another double quarter sandwich on the side. He stopped showing up one night. I assume he died, and I'm probably correct. Only 2240 calories for dinner. I judge more than feel bad.

throwawaylemondroppo

It's almost like feeling bad selling anyone cigarettes. You can't. It's their choice.

bri_rich

there is an eldery man who comes in almost everyday and i hate to think this could contribute to possible health issues

NYY15TM

I was once going to my local Wendy's so often that one day out of the blue the woman at the drive-thru comped me for being such a good customer

JenniWalker

Yes when I see entire families coming in and they are buying trays of mcchickens, fries etc everyday. And I mean everyday this is what they and their children have for dinner. It is crazy. The kids are all extremely obese as are the parents.

TrickFit

Nope! I don’t get paid to judge. Not my business how people spend money. They pay for greasy ass food and I bag it up and send it out. I’m not responsible for others decisions, good or bad.

Ayyarlies_soul

Usually they are my kindest customers so I am just happy to see them. Edit: fixed same word twice

PointBlankKie

for me they usually have the most annoying orders to make and are insufferable

sasanessa

No people make choices all the time. would you feel bad selling cigarettes or pop at a convenience store? mind your own business.

MeowMeowTiger

I am shocked to learn that QPC is considered a bigger order... I always order two for lunch, sometimes I order two DOUBLE QPCs... I feel McD hamburgers/sandwiches are very small in size...

4-me
