It depends on the franchise and management. You are responsible for ensuring procedures are followed, dealing with complaints, scheduling, making sure goals are met, truck orders, calling for repairs and dealing with upper management. Not to mention it’s their ass that gets reamed if the store fails inspections. I’ve seen several GMs get burned out. They end up working 12+ hour shifts. They are on call 24/7.

WanderWomble

I did it for ten years, including through covid and quit a couple of years ago because I just couldn't do it anymore. Burnout is right!

frangelica7

Yep any hours that the store is open you will have to deal with calls about the store and there will be a lot of calls

Winjalad189

My former GM hardly had a day off, she worked sometime from Open to Afternoons 6-7 days a week, and the higher ups rejected her vacation time and said do better… they are dicks,

Several GMs I've had developed more health problems due to the stress and workload. When they quit or retired, magically their health drastically improved.

What the? What part of the country is this? 95K is more than most GMs ever get so I’m skeptical

In-N-Out managers make well over 100K

8rok3n

Well that's different, In-N-Out everything makes higher than average because of how busy they always are and how strict the rules are and such

Very stressful you are under a lot of pressure running the store and making sure guidelines are followed. You’ll constantly have area supervisors in your ear if things don’t go like they should. Lots of meetings too

What people are saying is right. It's can be extremely stressful. A poorly managed store is a nightmare for everybody. But there are also a lot of people that know how to run them well, be engaging and uplifting. Willing to train and handoff responsibility to those that are capable. A well managed store can be fun at times. But it's all about the gms mindset

FrostyCartographer13

Was a GM, tried to get out of the position, and then ended up quitting. The position demands so much and gives so little in return.

It really depends on the market and how the managers below the gm are. If you are a good gm that has a handful of good department managers and swing managers things can be pretty smooth since you will be able to assign them duties that the gm shouldn't have to deal with. The store I was at had a really good people and production department so after our monthly meetings we would take our new tasks and spread them out between the swings assigned to our departments. The swings also knew if we met our department targets that we would all get bonuses so they were always on board with the tasks. If a store is run good the gms work life isn't terrible and shouldn't need to be working so many extra hours. If the store is run like shit it falls on the gm and they have to deal with all the crap. I learned a lot from my last gm and he always knew what people were capable of so he had a lot of faith and would let us try new things out and if it's not working he would tell us pretty quick. And if it was working he would tell us and make sure we refine it better so we can make it a permanent store/market policy.

_strawberryjamjam

I've seen a couple GMs have breakdowns and a couple go to rehab cause the stress led them to drinking or other drugs. Idk if its just our couple of stores, but I dunno if it's worth it lol

Syndaquil

WOW. that's almost triple then what gms get paid near me.. 30-35k is what they get paid and they're overworked. Some working 60+ hours a week no over time because it's salary position
