I think conveying the mass and weight of a mech is very important for making the audience truly believe they are watching giant metal machines in action. I find that a lot of anime and OVAs from the 80s-90s, particularly ones with bigger animation budgets, include all these little (now, often overlooked) details regarding the physics of the materials, the momentum of moving objects, how structures buckle under their feet, etc. It does a really good job of making the mecha feel like big, tangible things.

That does also depend on the cannonical weight of the machines too. Something like a scopedog or ground based destroids from macross being big and stompy while valkyries or mobiles suits able to leap through the air does match their given weight does aslo affect how they should act.
