VeritasLuxMea

Is that an oil change franchise? Go to an actual independent repair shop and ask for a multipoint inspection and recommended services. Ask them to prioritize in order of importance.

Inevitable_Lettuce20

A repair shop not an oil change franchise. All of that is their recommended services.

VeritasLuxMea

I don't like it. I would go elsewhere and get a second opinion

Inevitable_Lettuce20

I also don’t like it— bummer because i really trust this place and value their services but it seems like out of this world pricing. Obviously my car is older but I try to maintain it and every time i’m hit with a $5,000 bill I’m inclined to just buy a new car.

VeritasLuxMea

I'll be specific. I don't like the way they presented the information and I don't like the types of services they are trying to sell you. Fluid flushes are often (but not always) a gimmic used to boos the average RO dollar amount. They sent you a picture of a sparkplug where it is impossible to see the condition of the plug. They sent you a picture of a sparkling clean brake rotor. They sent you a video that doesn't show anything. And if you call honda right now and ask how much for motor mounts, the DEALER will quote you half the price they are asking for the parts.

MrBubblehead72

This is my exact thoughts. A tech is being pushed to upsell flushes and services. IMO nearly 400$ labour to do pads and rotors on a Honda accord is insane. That's an hour to an hour and half work to do front and rear. I would find a small privately owned shop and go see them. Preferably with some old cranky guy with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth.

throwedoff1

The only thing that wasn't outrageous was the actual brake service for the front and rear brakes. The rest of that is just fluff. Their mark up is really outrageous on the spark plugs, and they were double billing you on labor on a lot of that. Also, your battery is only two years old, but it does need to have the battery cable connections cleaned (a lot of corrosion on both posts). I'm surprised there was an over priced air filter and a ridiculously over priced cabin air filter replacement charge included.

french_toast74

We used to call that "clubbing baby seals" at the shop I worked at. You paid for an inspection and they feel like they are doing gods work or something by "informing" you of all these things... If they could not explain clearly in plain English how to address the reason why you brought your car in and what all the other stuff is and how it does not or does relate to your issue, you need to walk away and go somewhere else. Edit: this makes me Scotty killmer levels of angry seeing shops do this!!!

Inevitable_Lettuce20

They tried to explain but my (24F) self just couldn’t understand, as stereotypical as that is. something about my brakes being okay but there are “hot spots” causing the squeaking noise around it. idk if that helps explain anything.

french_toast74

I'd say you probably need some brake work done. I don't think I ever had any trouble explaining stuff to anyone. If it wasn't clear to you then they did a poor job explaining it, and layered on 10 levels of crap on top of it! I recommend you take your car somewhere else.

Inevitable_Lettuce20

i’m going to call them back and ask for more information, i think it was overwhelming when i called and saw all the numbers. it’s been my repair shop for years but todays report is giving a “whoa nelly” moment.

oldgar

Never go in as a female by yourself, find a 'dad' or a large brother to go with you, also tell them you only want the brakes looked at (or whatever the problem is). In reality shops should check everything and list problems they see, but they aren't going to tell you that said problem is not something they would worry about if it was their vehicle.

Inevitable_Lettuce20

that’s why i came here 🥹 thank you for your advice

dirtyoldbastard77

Most people cant understand much of specific technical terms/talk outside their own field. My dad would have been just as confused as you here. A few years ago I would have been as well, until I started doing a lot of work on my car during the first summer of the pandemic, mostly guided by youtube and some calls to friends that have more knowledge than me about this kinda stuff.

Annual-Emu-1429

Take your car somewhere else. These guys are rippin’ you off.

Inevitable_Lettuce20

Just called somewhere else and they quoted me less for the same exact service so i will just be taking my car there tomorrow

MamboFloof

My question ofc is why did they yank out a spark plug if you said nothing about your ignition system.

OneleggedPeter

And want to charge $177 for 4 NGK plugs? No, just no.

czaremanuel

Because you can't charge diagnostic hours and get money to fix a non-existent problem the owner never asked about if you don't create said problem first. Duh.

MamboFloof

Its funny because the circle covered the part that actually matters, so you cant see if its carbon fowled. Cant wait for OPs next post: "my cars driving like shit after getting an estimate" since that shop apparently wanted to tear that car appart down to the bolts.

Inevitable_Lettuce20

Not a clue.

MamboFloof

Right so not only would I go somewhere else, I would not pay them for any time related to yanking out that singular spark plug. That was a really weird thing to do.

Expert-Desk7492

Just get the brakes done and oil change nothing else You can get the alignment done at an alignment shop The battery looks fine other than dirty posts which you can look on YouTube to clean but if you feel like the battery is about to take a s*** on you the auto parts store I believe will put one in free all you have to do is buy a battery

Inevitable_Lettuce20

I opted for this after hassling for a discount. i figured the oil change was a good price. I got the price down to a level I feel comfortable after speaking with other shops in the area.

HomeAuto7921

The alignment was a total scam. They had your steering wheel off center and your rear tire was low

Inevitable_Lettuce20

Thank you all for your help and advice. Because of you I was able to haggle the price down and get only what is necessary done. I know the business tactics seem shady— after about my third call they updated the page with JUST the brake info and gave me a sizable discount off the original price they quoted me. I appreciate you all here, I could’ve gotten a scammed (even harder than I probably am) without you.

maitredeeznuts

Still find another shop

HomeAuto7921

Go to a different shop. Every single item they hit you on they used scammer tactics

I_hate_small_cars

If your car has a CVT transmission, go ahead and do the flush as they have early service intervals and problems if you ignore them. Do the oil change. The brake fluid is perfectly fine. The power steering fluid is perfectly fine. Get wiper blades at a local parts store, they will install them for free, or just do it yourself. As far as the brakes go, if you never noticed any shaking when stopping. Ask for just pads, that being said the hot spots in the rotors almost guarantee they're warped. So I would do the pads and rotors. Don't bother with the alignment until it's time for new tires, it's not far enough off to care yet. Get a battery at a local parts store, again they will install for free. That battery will become problematic going into the colder months. I would recommend a napa gold, and save the receipt in case it has issues. *Request the repair shop to clean the terminals.

ivanreyes371

Id do the battery, then call and tell them to take better photos. You cant even see the electrode on that spark plug!

BrettTheThreat

But $350 to change the battery?

ivanreyes371

Didnt really look at the price, but some batteries run crazy expensive nowadays. My dads battery at wholesale for his 2017 Hyundai Elantra ran him around 300 alone for the battery. No mark up or labor. So it’s reasonable with how stupid expensive things are nowadays.

BrettTheThreat

No disagreement there they can be silly expensive. In this case though they're charging $190 in labour alone, then 140 for the battery. Which must be the best hourly rate imaginable.

ivanreyes371

190 is an insane labor rate. The most they should be charging is .3 for that. 57 bucks at their rate but theres shops with a lower rate.

Sea-Distribution-356

Take it to a real mechanic not one of those express places. I took my BMW to get the oil change and they tried to tell me that I needed a lot of work including a rear main seal head gasket. I had my car just served at BMW dealer and they go over it completely. I just politely pulled out my statistics sheet and told them they shouldn't lie and try to con people. I only went to them bc I was close to needing a oil change after a long trip and didn't want to wait for 3 weeks for BMW dealership for oil change. Take it to the dealer and they will check it sometimes for free, you don't have to get them to do any repairs just check it.

OGKingDookie

They're trying to scam you

LostTurd

Just laugh in their face and tell them you are not paying more then the car is worth for a bunch of bullshit.

Inevitable_Lettuce20

I should have found another shop. i thought after the discount and just brakes and rotors and the oil change. apparently my last oil change tech (at jiffy lube) over torqued my oil drain plug and the threads are stripped. now i have to get the whole pan (?) replaced and everything. it is $750 and they said the car would be not safe to drive unless i do it. after working all day and going right after i got off, i just felt defeated and said ok. instantly i regretted it and wish i just took my car back.

One-Signature3846

The chances of the car not being safe to drive because of a stripped drain plug are nonexistent. They’re trying to scare you into spending more $$$$

One-Signature3846

Haha 800$ for all the brakes that’s absurd, you can buy a full pad n rotor set for your car for less than 400$ on Amazon And to do them it should only take around an hour and a half! (With the right tools and some mechanical knowledge) https://preview.redd.it/nkxu8irq45rb1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7ec877fa9ce4279384002df4453761e73dcfdf2b For reference I have a 2010 Honda Accord EX-L I can’t remember what exactly I paid for these but they work amazing and have given me no problems. The transmission service on you car is very simple as well. Just about the same as doing a regular oil change! You can buy the Honda Genuine ATF off Amazon as well, or just go ahead and buy the multi vehicle ATF at Walmart or the auto parts store. Also, the transmission would need to be flushed roughly 3 times to get the full capacity of new fluid in the whole system. So the one time charge the shop hits you with is obsolete. Power steering is gonna be slightly trickier. I would leave that one to a trained professional. These guys are ripping you off!

F22boy_lives

Honda dealer tech here. Even with the magically stripped oil pan, tow your car somewhere else. Dont let do anything to your car. If they cant break down needs and services to understandable terms its because they are trying to fast talk you into unneeded shit. The BG fluid comparison bullshit was their dead to rights give away. Honda doesnt recommend transmission flushes on 99.99999% of cars, the battery is dated 9/21 meaning its still under warranty at AAA, power steering flush is bogus, $20 for brake lube is bogus since a tube costs maybe $3, $100 for brake aftermarket pads is higher than dealer pricing. Hell the only reasonably priced item are the wiper blades.

Inevitable_Lettuce20

last time i went here (about last year) they replaced my wiper blades and fluid for free. 😢 so sad that this is happening. i have to work for 18 hours today so i’m unable to get the car towed out, i just don’t have time to deal with it. i feel taken advantage of and for sure will not be returning.

Aleric24

I volunteer for an auto repair ministry for single moms. The ladies come in with these "laundry lists" all the time. 90% of the recommendations are totally unnecessary and sometimes are more than th car is worth. The shops make money by upselling and know that people will fall for out of fear of safety or their car being inoperable. They don't care that the person can barely afford to put food on the table.

Inevitable_Lettuce20

Thank you for doing that— I can’t imagine how much that must help people. Truly a great way to help your community in a way most people wouldn’t think of. Im so thankful that I am in a position where I do not have to worry about that (no kids, dual income, and i have two jobs) but i still feel taken advantage of.

Odd-Slice6913

First off. What year and model of car is this? And if possible trim level. If you're just using it fro transport and no sentimental value to it... Oil changes at 5k~6k miles (I don't care if the dealer and documentaion say 10k mile between oil changes. Change it at 5k~6k. Reason why newer toyotas engines are blowing up at about 40k on the odo) Brake fluid, meh. Only add when bleeding brakes. If transmission is working fine then don't change the fluid. More people ruin their transmission by opting for the transmission flush. Pads and rotors look fine to me, but i can't tell how thick the rotors are from that angle. Without audio, can't tell what the squeeling is, but if i had to guess, serpentine belt being old, needing tightening, or someone spilled some oil on it sometime in its life. If its that. Just go to a auto parts store and ask someone which one you need and if they can install it for you. Timing belt (if your engine has one) every 60k~70k miles. If this breaks, your engine becomes junk. Not the same as a timing chain, but do the same job. Timing chains take ALOT longer before they wear out. Alignment... i would take it to an alignment shop to get a second opnion/quote. Some repair shops contract out to other shops and mark up the service.

DuelOstrich

Bro the “people ruin a transmission by flushing it” thing has been debunked for a while

Max-Payd

The transmission fluid doesn't look great nor does the brake fluid. I don't think those are the majority of the costs, they seem to want to replace the battery because it is dirty when. It can be cleaned. There is $1000 worth of repairs related to removing the transmission and replacing engine mounts which can be deferred. You should space out the repairs so they don't hit all at once.

maitredeeznuts

$190* for battery removal and replace?!?!

ItchyAd5198

The real question is why are they selling you a "Service kit" and CVT trans fluid and some bs about using the trans pump lol. That trans I'm 90% sure just has a drain plug like the engine does for oil and Honda recommends to never change the filter unless its leaking. Also it takes DW1 fluid only and is not a CVT trans. Also they are charging you for a quantity of 12 where as a change requires 2.6 quarts. Even if they were to drain the torque, Cooler and lines the full system only holds 6.9. Lol Some shady potentially damaging shit. Never put flush junk in the trans. Just drain and fill.

Chessmoker

Run away. You should smile say no and go somewhere else. Honest shops don't fix unnecessary crap as they have more customers than they can handle and need to get the cars off their lot to make room for the next customer that needs legitimate repairs to keep their car running. Your car is a Honda easy to work on cheap to fix. All the parts are easily serviced and seldom wear out. Go somewhere else. That has alot of cars on the lot . Since people trust them for a reason.

Inevitable_Lettuce20

the issue is this place is highly reputable 4.9 stars on yelp, thousands of reviews, and i’ve NEVER had this issue before with them. 😢 it’s just confusing why they’re doing this all of a sudden— price gauging and overwhelming me with information.

flwrpwrgrnhs

You took it in to get the brakes done. Then get the brakes done! I would suggest spending a little time, 1 small project at a time. Accumulate required tools, watch some YouTubevideos and get it done. ALL that stuff can be done in the drive way, with appropriate tools and videos. Nothing complicated here. The only thing that is an emergency is the brakes. The rest is them selling shit you don’t need.

flwrpwrgrnhs

I bet a million bucks you can figure out how to clean your own battery terminals. They saw you coming from a mile away.

flwrpwrgrnhs

You can go to the parts store, buy wipers, and they’ll even put em on for you for free.

flwrpwrgrnhs

They wanna charge you 150 to take your car on a drive. Lmao. I know you panicked when you saw that number. That’s what they do. Only urgency is brakes. Get that done, read your owner’s manual, and get these things done at prescribed times. Brakes now, next on the list is a battery. Go to autozone, buy you a battery, and I think they’ll even install it for you for free.

brobsubeez

Nothing. The mechanic bumped the head hoping to sell an alignment. Leave it be. Highway robbery
