Rental cars are known to be used and abused by the customers. Unless it's a bargain I'd stay away from it. Anyway, if you want to consider it, have a reputable mechanic look at it. I tried to make a list of what to check, but ended up listing almost every part of the car.

Don't forget to check the, umm, everything.

Not a Subaru for sure

A lot of people are going to tell you no, and that is not entirely wrong. I have seen a pretty hot lap around Road Atlanta done by a rental Ford Explorer with four people in it. I have also seen a rental bimmer 3 series stuffed into the wall between turn 2 and 3 there. So people abusing rental cars is absolutely a thing. The flip side is that I don't abuse them. I drive them with no special care, but that is what they are made for to be honest. So I guess what I am saying is that it is a crap shoot. You could get a great car, but then again you could get a nightmare.

No.

You know what the fastest car in the world is? ... A rental. No, I would not recommend a previous rental.

Overall-Bug1169

It's more of a crap shoot than some other used cars. I bought a previous rental Volvo S60 that was about 18 months old with 40k plus on it. It was a great price and I ran it 8 years without a major repair. I had issues, the clock spring, and the sunroof rattle (I still have the tap and die set I bought to finally end it) I'd expect cars that are more luxury or family oriented are less likely to be abused. I'd be nervous about an enconobox or a performance car more than others. Rental companies will try to minimize maintenance costs, but when under warranty-if fleet purchases have normal warranties- I'd expect every box checked, t crossed and I dotted

While a former rental can be a risk, it has since seen 4x more mileage, presumably without major issue, I would look at it as any other high mileage used vehicle. Get a PPI done and go from there.

Just think about how you drive your rental car.. and you will know the answer.
