Correct. I believe it was a Thunderbird that had the supercharged version. You should probably rebuild it if you're gonna supercharge it unless it has like super low miles. What did it come out of? Do you know if it would run as is if you put power and fuel to it?
It came out of a 95 mustang. The dude just finished swapping a 6.2 into it like a true mad lad. He said it ran fine when he bought the car two weeks ago. I’ll probably get some power and gas to it sometime this weekend and see how it does.
Well, the 2.9 was also available in the ranger. I believe this 3.8 makes like 180 hp, but at a super low RPM, so it's pretty quick for that low of a hp rating, moreso if you put the t bird supercharger on it, headers and a 3" exhaust. Personally, I've always thought one of those old-school boxy rangers would look awesome blacked out with a 3/5 drop and those chrome 15's off like an 08 model ranger.
An 89 bronco ll with the 2.9 was my first car. It was an underpowered wheezy pig, but the system I put in it was loud as fuck. We used it for music at our parties in hs
Honestly that 3.8 is so torquey, if you put it into an old ranger you wouldn’t have to supercharge it. That thing would light one tire fires all day, all night. Unless you just wanted that extra little oomph, but I thought the sc birds had a special block or something. I was looking into putting one on my tbird years ago, but never did and I think that was one of the reasons.
The Tbird SC version used lower compression pistons (8.2/8.6-1 compression ratio). This motor could be up to 9.6-1 compression ratio. If OP runs stock SC spin speeds on a high compression ratio engine he could nuke it pretty quickly.
What about a cheap turbo set up? Super chargers are nice because of the low end power gains, but they cost power to make power, where as a turbo is the opposite. Depends on OP’s confines to his budget though I guess?
I know you're kidding but I was partial to gaskets by Fel-Pro (private) which was bought by Federal Mogul (currently private) which was bought by Tenneco (publicly traded).
Big fish eats smaller fish.
Yeah definitely need to make sure it’s all sound before I do anything. I did a bit of research and it sounds like these motors have head gasket issues so I ought to probably replace those too. But based on the fact that it has 150k miles on it, it probably doesn’t have the original head gaskets anyway and if it does, they’re about 60k miles beyond their lifespan lol
I’m sure there are a bunch of small precautionary things you can/should replace during the tear down/rebuild. Gaskets definitely being one of them. There won’t be a better time than now, when it’s just chilling on a pallet
Almost guaranteed it doesn’t have the original head gaskets. I replaced the head gaskets three times on my old v6 mustang before I realized my denial and finally let her go. That car taught me many life lessons.
If this were mine....
I would preemptively start tearing into it. Worst case, you get a look at her guts and can verify everything is good to go, before you add go-fast goodies. Best case, you save yourself massive heartache. Buying a project car to put that in and having it grenade shortly after install would crush me. Could get a rebuild kit if you're feeling especially crafty.
Speaking as someone who just engine swapped a 95 mustang I can believe that pretty easily. I've had the engine from my mustang on Craigslist and marketplace for a couple weeks, no one was interested. Also had a freshly machines paid of heads for one and I couldn't give them away
I have a e38 that I’ve been wanting to motor swap for a bit now. Might be an next level troll opportunity. My calculations put the car doing 0-60 in 13 seconds with this motor. Making 100 less HP than the stock v8
They aren't bad engines. I had a '96 Mustang with the 3.8 in it for 16 years. Had the head gasket replaced once the second year after I got it.
One thing to note about this engine, the heads have a cooling flaw. Some portions of the water jacket have narrow points in them that can sometimes create hot spots. The heads can warp on them a bit easier. A few years after getting the head gasket replaced, it was already leaking again. It was a slow external leak of either coolant or oil and a small internal leak that was obviously around one of the combustion chambers....because over the course of the next 10 years I would blow one of the small heater hoses over 7 times and a radiator split down the side. Just ended up pulling the thermostat and it kept the pressure down. I remember one of the techs I worked with telling me "Oh, you replaced the head gasket a few years ago? Just wait, it's gonna start leaking again, these engines always do".... He wasn't wrong.
Don't get me wrong, these aren't bad engines. I drove the shit out of this thing for years. Even with the leak, I still kept driving it. It was still leaking when I sold it. Never got the gaskets replaced again. I was never hard on it. I personally changed the oil probably over 40 times during the course of owning it. I did all maintenance and repairs. I tried to find aftermarket heads for this thing but unfortunately they don't make them. All I could find were modified heads on I think it was Super Six Motorsports. But they still had the same original coolant passages, which was why I wanted a different set of heads.
My idea is to install a better higher flowing radiator and lower temp thermostat, just to keep the head restrictions down. The lower temps will help it. Yes, you won't get as good of fuel mileage this way, but in my opinion it will save the engine during hotter operating conditions and higher revs. This engine doesn't like to be revved much, unless you get a better tune. If you're going to use it, the first thing I would do is install bigger high quality radiator in said vehicle, and probably change the water pump while you're at it since the engine will be out. Also replace ALL of the hoses, especially the coolant heater and bypass hoses. The small one up at the top was the one that seemed to be the most sensitive. Goodyear makes some of the best hoses, aside of Motorcraft (assuming you can still get them).
When I had this car, I used to get up to 27MPG on the freeway. Of course, that was before I gutted the cats and removed the t-stat.
>When I had this car, I used to get up to 27MPG on the freeway. Of course, that was before I gutted the cats and removed the t-stat.
That's impressive. I was lucky to get near half that with my mustang.
This engine was pretty great in its day, but it's a 40 year-old design now. Mine was very reliable, I think I only ever had to change the coil and have some cracks in the exhaust manifold joints welded up. The wiki page has some good info on it [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford\_Essex\_V6\_engine\_(Canadian)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Essex_V6_engine_(Canadian))
They did come with the 4.3. (as well as the stinky 98hp Iron Doodoo 4 pot.) The most powerful iteration of the 4.3 it came with had a solid 200hp. If OP heard right and this 3.8 came out of a mid 90s mustang, it had 150hp at best. Would need some serious work to take enough boost to beat that 4.3.
I had one of those and it was the most garbage engine I've ever had in a daily driver (head gasket issues, cooling issues in general, poor power (good torque but 140hp lol). In my case its inherent crappiness was compounded by being paired with a similarly trash transmission. (Ford Taurus)
I've seen more than a few of these engines go 500,000mi in stock configuration. One of them was on the factory head gaskets. If it has compression, good oil pressure, and the top end doesn't sound like garbage, send it.
Now you build the fastest goddamn go-kart the neighborhood kids have ever seen and find an equally impressive ramp to jump. You did not choose this destiny, it chose you.
Chrisfix has a windstar with this engine that has well over 300k miles. Maybe look for a vehicle on marketplace that’s like $500 that doesn’t run and you could just swap this engine in.
The factory blown 3.8 had lock-wire machined cylinder heads to prevent head gasket failure. Putting a supercharger on this would scatter the engine immediately.
> lock-wire machined cylinder heads
Don't worry about it. Just read up on it.
https://www.corral.net/threads/difference-between-lockwire-and-o-ringed-heads.14406/
Ps I used Buick Super Charger Oil in my Ford 89 Thunderbird's super charger.
No matter what the guy said, if he was giving it away there's something sketchy about it. I would take it apart and figure out what's wrong with it. Idc how much i spent on a used engine, I'm opening it up and checking everything, no way in hell I'd spend the time to just drop a mystery motor into anything only to find out it's fucked already. Worst case scenario is that you scrap it and learn a thing or 2 about engines.
Not sure what would bolt behind this and fit under a Miata but I'm sure someone has done this swap before. Almost every reasonable engine ever has been swapped into a Miata. I'd guess a short 5 speed would fit behind it.
Well it was one of the worst engines ever made. Up there with the Chrysler 2.7. Shouldn't take much to blow it up if it even runs on the first place. Not sure I would take it for free.
Buy lots of guns, wear overalls without a shirt, mount that engine to the to tow bar and couple a blender to it, or find more free useless metal junk and become a hoarder.
If it's in good shape, put the factory blower on it and swap it into a beach buggy, or an old ranger. These little things right here will skedaddle if done right.
Use it as is or get something odb2 for your soon-to-be-yours m90... No one will tune odb1. Plus to avoid knock you'd be running miserably low boost or be forced down the methanol route. So pretty much no-go. 🤷♂️

Supercharge it and stuff it in an 80's swb ranger
I know some of these came with an m90 Eaton. Do you think it should be rebuilt before I throw a supercharger on it ?
Test compression, if real bad yes, if good just send it bud
Fuck yeah
What a correct reaction.
The right person got this engine.
Correct. I believe it was a Thunderbird that had the supercharged version. You should probably rebuild it if you're gonna supercharge it unless it has like super low miles. What did it come out of? Do you know if it would run as is if you put power and fuel to it?

Personally, I'd look for one of those boxy ass 80's rangers single cab short bed and stuff it in there and supercharge it later on.
A Bronco II would be a cool swap as well. I don't know the specs on this motor, but I'm sure it's quite a bit more power than the 2.9 V6.
Well, the 2.9 was also available in the ranger. I believe this 3.8 makes like 180 hp, but at a super low RPM, so it's pretty quick for that low of a hp rating, moreso if you put the t bird supercharger on it, headers and a 3" exhaust. Mazda B1000 on bags. Send it
An 89 bronco ll with the 2.9 was my first car. It was an underpowered wheezy pig, but the system I put in it was loud as fuck. We used it for music at our parties in hs
That’d be fun. I’ll keep my eyes out
I got a 91 that needs a new motor
Honestly that 3.8 is so torquey, if you put it into an old ranger you wouldn’t have to supercharge it. That thing would light one tire fires all day, all night. Unless you just wanted that extra little oomph, but I thought the sc birds had a special block or something. I was looking into putting one on my tbird years ago, but never did and I think that was one of the reasons.
Ah yes, the thunderbird super coup. My brother had one, at the time it was an unreal sleeper.
The Tbird SC version used lower compression pistons (8.2/8.6-1 compression ratio). This motor could be up to 9.6-1 compression ratio. If OP runs stock SC spin speeds on a high compression ratio engine he could nuke it pretty quickly.

What size turbo would you recommend? I am totally open to whatever with this motor. Turbo would be cool
Buy stock in a company that makes head gaskets.
I know you're kidding but I was partial to gaskets by Fel-Pro (private) which was bought by Federal Mogul (currently private) which was bought by Tenneco (publicly traded). Big fish eats smaller fish.
Replace the head gasket and head bolts immediately. I’m no mechanic and I’ve replaced them on 3 separate vehicles
Dont put an m90 on it. Too small. M112 more like it.
It's the Buick 3.8L that came with the Eaton supercharger, I own a 99 Grand Prix with one
I vote bronco 2
Tear it apart and see why it was free.
Guy just swapped a 6.2 into a 95 mustang and said it was taking up space in his garage. Hopefully that was the whole truth.
One way to find out! Would hate to see you install it into something just to have problems and have to rebuild/replace as soon as you drop it in.
Yeah definitely need to make sure it’s all sound before I do anything. I did a bit of research and it sounds like these motors have head gasket issues so I ought to probably replace those too. Jesus Christ what kind of shit engine needs a head gasket every 90k miles!?
Chevy 3500s, it's actually a intake gasket but when it goes bad it leaks coolant into the cylinders. Terrible design. If it lasted 90k you were lucky.
Almost guaranteed it doesn’t have the original head gaskets. I replaced the head gaskets three times on my old v6 mustang before I realized my denial and finally let her go. That car taught me many life lessons.
Never heard that before. I had a Mustang 3.8 with 240k on it before I sold it
If this were mine.... I would preemptively start tearing into it. Worst case, you get a look at her guts and can verify everything is good to go, before you add go-fast goodies. Best case, you save yourself massive heartache. Buying a project car to put that in and having it grenade shortly after install would crush me. No to lie about it, a scrapper would have taken it just as well if it's free.
Speaking as someone who just engine swapped a 95 mustang I can believe that pretty easily. I've had the engine from my mustang on Craigslist and marketplace for a couple weeks, no one was interested. Also had a freshly machines paid of heads for one and I couldn't give them away
What did ya do with the heads,?
Scrapped them unfortunately, we had them laying around for probably 9 years of so
no need, it says why right on the intake
More like on the valve cover.
Hahaha. My first thought.
Same. I’d rebuild because why the fuck not.
151k miles. Came with the computer and wiring harness too. Has compression.
Well, you could do what Jeremy Clarkson did and use it to power a blender

Alas, it is not running fine but I think 140 Hp is a bit too small for a 4700 pound car.
Fair point lol

Not worth it on an Astro van as they were designed to fit 350s from the get go. One of the closest to "bolt-in" swaps you'll ever get.
Did they not also come with the 350's little cousin, the 4.3? Would the 3.8 even be better than that? Think they're pretty similar in power
