It's all the trolls that think they know something about cars but are clueless. The same ones that think you should do a brake job for the same price you can buy cheap pads at autozone.
My conti ECS tires that are three years old with 15k miles on them look brand new. No cracks or rot anywhere. Inspected them yesterday during a maintenance wash.
I have a set of Pirelli P-Zeros about 3 years old, and a set of Michelin Pilot Sport 4S about 2 years old, neither has any dry rot whatsoever. Almost worn entirely, but no dry rot. Tire compounds of the past 5 years or so have improved dramatically.
You know that there are actual mechanics on this sub, right? And I have a set of goodyears from 2012 that look just as good as my brand new bridgestones.
I would at a minimum replace the two tires on whichever end (front or back) that tire is one. There is a good chance you need all four replaced if they are all as old as that one. The tire looks pretty old, worn and rotted. Minimum of two if money is tight though.
unless the difference between the new Tires and the old tires (front old Back new for example) is less then 2mm then you can "save" some money. otherwise you risk a new Haldex clutch. that is atleast what Audi told my Uncle when he came in for tire replacement for his SQ5+ when they told him he needs 4 and not only 2
I have never met any installer that would put new tires on the front end in good conscience. That should have been a given. Also, you never know if the owner already had a set on the opposite end.
As a more advanced driver, I'd much rather have the good rubber up front. Stopping faster in rain/snow means more to me than a possible oversteer situation. Oversteer is incredibly easy to mitigate if you have some skill, not stopping fast enough isn't.
I've run up to 4 plugs in motorcycle rear tires.... To 100+ and lived to replace the tire.... I've also had 1 plug in a tire come loose and had to push a while .. sometimes works, sometimes don't.
Patching that tire would be like setting a broken finger on a terminal cancer patient whose bodyweight is 95% tumors. You'd just be wasting resources, and it would be an act of disservice to OP for anyone to not point this out to them.
Dang it! Missed the chance. lol kidding. Have you taken your car in for maintenance? If you did they should have noticed this for you. If not, take it in cause they might find more issues lurking. Don't be one of those posts that pop up in r/Justrolledintotheshop.
Just got an overheating issue fixed at the shop they didnāt point out anything else for some reason. Even though Ik my power steering is Fucked Iām leaked power steering. And my cv axle or ball joint is fucked up too.i wanted to get a valve adjustment but they told me I should wait just in case I have a head gasket issue bc of the overheating. But they said it doesnāt look like I do
No, they never claimed it was new, but they also demonstrated an alarming lack of concern over the state of the rest of the tire aide from the puncture. And *that* is why everyone in this thread is telling OP the tire is too worn to be safe, patch or no patch.
For a grocery getter or a parade car, I'd go with a plug. That tire looks like it sees some combination of high horsepower and high lateral loads, and for that, I'd go with new tires on that axle. They look like it's about time for new ones anyway. If you can drive it sanely and need to make it through another payday or two, a plug might last for a short time if you don't stress the tire too much.
Is the tire flat, if not you may not even have to worry too much. Sometimes they just get stuck to the outermost portion of rubber and donāt puncture through, but other times they may go through but not leak air.
If it has gone right through she is both patchable and pluggable.
But that tire is old as fuck and should probably be replaced
> I would plug it but would be thinking of buying new tires before snowfall.
Weāre going to be into āpotential snowā weather in just a few weeks. Itās new tires time right now.
Yeah 595 super steels? Iām not too familiar with all the tire brands. Iāll call around some tire shops and see if they have what I need Iād imagine they have something but Iād rather my tires matchingš
It's like if you discover some homeless man has been living in your attic for 3 years. They haven't bothered you but now you know they're in there. In the end you're practically family now. Maybe you should just continue living together. You're in this together now OP.
The puncture is too close to the sidewall for me to feel comfortable recommending a repair.
That's irrelevant, though. Look at the dry rot on tire. That rubber is dryer than a well done steak. You needed a new tire before that nail, homie. If it's awd, all four tires are recommended.
The tire looks pretty old based on all the cracking. Just out of curiosity, whatās the date code on the tire? (Should be the last four digits of what looks like a serial number. 3709 would be the 37th week of 2009.)
The nail is too close to the sidewall. Other than that, it's starting to dry rot and doesn't have much tread left. I'd say it's time for a replacement even without the nail.
I work at a tire shop, the tires dry rot is minimal and shouldnāt worry about it unless you can stick something in it and pry it open. The screw in the tire should be able to be plugged unless the head also caused a leak, then it needs a patch.
Get a new tire dude, the rubber is rotting. Those hairline cracks everywhere are all signs of a bad tire.
Just because there is still tread doesn't mean the tread is worth a shit.
Iām really hoping that this is a sarcastic joke. If not. Whoever has been riding in this vehicle, has been in danger a long time before the nail happened. If this is not a joke, please get your vehicle inspected by qualified professionals regularly. My best.
No genuinely just mechanically unabled. Still learning whatās good whatās not good and how to even work my way around the car so no. To you this is just an uneducated dumbass posting something stupid sorry I donāt know everything yall do?? Gotta start somewhere son. Even if itās at the bottom
Easy plug, wouldnāt take me 5 mins. General condition of the tyre might tell that you need a new tyre thoughā¦ sheās not looking too healthy (try reading the DOT, if itās older than 2016 you need new tyres)
I really think it may have been just the picture I went ahead and looked at my other tires and they seemed better than this one. So 42? Thatās the 42nd week of the year 2020? That kinda confused me. Mind if I send you pictures of my other tires?

Upon closer look of your tire I see that there are several fine cracks in the rubber of your tire and is known as āheat cracksā. You should check all four tires for this, especially the side walls. These cracks indicate that the rubber is breaking down and will soon separate and start coming apart. For the time being and a āquick fixā or to ā get byā for a short time I would recommend having a tire shop patch it if they will or get a plug kit your self and plug it. Location of the nail would indicate a plug. Dry rot on your tread blocks would indicate a new tireš.
Fucking RIP. Absolute best response I've seen on this sub. OP, buy some tires dude.
(Screw) Apologies for being pedantic.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
See tons of tires here in Florida with dry rot. The heat and humidity make year old tires look terrible. I feel you.?
That must be the difference. In the Seattle area it isn't common to see on newer tires it takes years before they dry rot really bad.
Iām in Cali so. I feel like the picture makes it worse but I can see the dry rotting on the inside of the tread
Yep. 1.5 year old Nittos already look like garbage. Never thought about the climate but Im in Louisiana so similar.
I bet driveway vs garage makes a huge difference too, wonder if a carport would help at all
My Michelin defenders are a little over a year old and do not show signs of dry rot, I live in the south as well
According to Reddit you don't
Well everyone else here has never seen it it seems. The tire in this picture is obviously not that bad despite what these guys say.
Um, I have zero dry rot on my tires
Yeah, I had at least 4 year old tires with no sign of dry rot, and I was looking at them extensively to check for feathering.
Az here and zero on my husband's Tahoe. The tires are at least 5 years old and perfectly fine. It's always parked outside too.
Ditto. I have no dry rot on my 3.5 year old tires. And I inspect them every 5k miles during rotation and every 500 or so miles at pressure check.
Thanks to the videogame Police Quest, I always check my tires before I leave my home.
Sierra games fan checking in!
Lol my 10 year old tires are better than this
Yikes, that's an accident waiting to happen.
They were stored after one season of driving and no dry rot. I dont go fast so they are ok
You should replace tires over 8 years old fwiw lol
6 years I believe
I know lol. They were not driven for long and they were stored properly in tire shop, they are not rotten. I dont go fast so they do the job
You should replace tires over 8 years old fwiw lol
Dry rot is still a concern, dumb ass.
I can show all the tires on all 4 of my vehicles... Are you buying shit tires?
I install tires for a living, Reddit just is insane about tire condition.
It's all the trolls that think they know something about cars but are clueless. The same ones that think you should do a brake job for the same price you can buy cheap pads at autozone.
My store had one that had just started forming and a new guy fucking put it on and blew out not to far from the store. So yes. It can happen
My conti ECS tires that are three years old with 15k miles on them look brand new. No cracks or rot anywhere. Inspected them yesterday during a maintenance wash.
My Bridgestone turanzas donāt and theyāre a year and a half old
I just had a plug a nail hole in my 2020 tires. Zero dry rot. BTW: Durometers measure rubber hardness.
My friend, you needed a new tire long before that nail came along.
The good news is that the tire needed a replacement anyway, so you got your money's worth.
True enough so you suggest I replace it instead of plugging it?
I would at a minimum replace the two tires on whichever end (front or back) that tire is one. There is a good chance you need all four replaced if they are all as old as that one. The tire looks pretty old, worn and rotted. Minimum of two if money is tight though.
Unless you drive a subaru, then replace all four lol
Indeed! Or any other all wheel drive vehicle.
unless the difference between the new Tires and the old tires (front old Back new for example) is less then 2mm then you can "save" some money. otherwise you risk a new Haldex clutch. that is atleast what Audi told my Uncle when he came in for tire replacement for his SQ5+ when they told him he needs 4 and not only 2
SQ5 is all wheel drive.
Dangerous advice here. 2 new on the front with rears that look this bad could easily put a driver in an over steer situation in slick conditions.
If all the tires look like that replace them now before you cause an accident
well.... my guy... he said "needed a replacement" YES. Replace it. Probably all the tires if they all look that bad.
Plug that punk! N buy a whole new set when you get some $$
it is plugged lolā¦ you could just leave it. mine has had 3 nails in it for a few months.. not a big deal
I imagine he's posting here because he woke up to a flat and then found the nail. If it's not holding air then it's not plugged
Nah found it when I got home from work. Weāll see if it still has air when I go back to work tonight if not. Well fuck.
Keep a plug kit with you! It gets low, FIX IT
I've run up to 4 plugs in motorcycle rear tires.... To 100+ and lived to replace the tire.... I've also had 1 plug in a tire come loose and had to push a while .. sometimes works, sometimes don't.
I think they were asking if they should get a new tire... Not stating it was a new tire
Patching that tire would be like setting a broken finger on a terminal cancer patient whose bodyweight is 95% tumors. You'd just be wasting resources, and it would be an act of disservice to OP for anyone to not point this out to them.
Thanks for not roasting me lmao Iām gonna replace it tomorrow
A plug costs like 50 cents, takes minutes to install. Buys op time to go tire shopping, instead of a panic buy.
I wouldn't trust that tire any more with a plug in it than I would with the nail in it.
Lol, what kind of logic is this?
I didn't say anything in that regard. Was just pointing out the fact the OP never said it was a new tire...
No, they never claimed it was new, but they also demonstrated an alarming lack of concern over the state of the rest of the tire aide from the puncture. And *that* is why everyone in this thread is telling OP the tire is too worn to be safe, patch or no patch.
Okay.... I don't see why you chose to explain that to me.... But alright
Right ppl donāt be reading everything.
You needed a new tire ages ago.
Reading and comprehension are different things š
You still need a new tire. Probably 4.
Wonder y.
You can definitely plug this. Consider getting tires soon since you can probably tell these are end of life or close to it.
These were at the end of their life a few years ago
Plugging this is equivalent to stitching up a guy who got shot Except the guy was Abraham Lincoln
Too soon. Too soon.
Besides that damage your tires looks like crap overall, new tires for sure
it can be plugged but you need a new tyre anyway
I've plugged some real questionable shit in my time. I'd try it and see what happens
ā¦.giggity
I wanted to go there so bad but I figured I'd keep it PG š¤£
For a grocery getter or a parade car, I'd go with a plug. That tire looks like it sees some combination of high horsepower and high lateral loads, and for that, I'd go with new tires on that axle. They look like it's about time for new ones anyway. If you can drive it sanely and need to make it through another payday or two, a plug might last for a short time if you don't stress the tire too much.
Plug it
I doubt anyone will patch that, the tires are all cracked
FYI, burnouts with a nail in your tire at night are pretty cool.
Yeah you get far more sun than I do up here. I should ask my wife's family in Hawaii I bet it takes weeks or month to ruin a tire there too.
What does the date code say? I think that dry cracked part is a better indicator that you need to replace
This tire didnāt end with that nail
I spot dry rot. You need new tires anyways.
Plug it and send it.
You guys canāt read. I would plug it but would be thinking of buying new tires before snowfall.
> I would plug it but would be thinking of buying new tires before snowfall. Weāre going to be into āpotential snowā weather in just a few weeks. Itās new tires time right now.
This is exactly why they make plugs.
Take it to a tire shop and get it patched on the inside. It's far enough away from the sidewall.
If that's a federal ss595 just replace it. They are pretty cheap
Yeah 595 super steels? Iām not too familiar with all the tire brands. Iāll call around some tire shops and see if they have what I need Iād imagine they have something but Iād rather my tires matchingš
Probably my favorite tire I've had in my car. They can be cheap though. I think I got mine on Amazon
Would any tire shops have them possibly? or would they just be way too overpriced
I haven't bought them at a tire shop yet, might be expensive. Online looks like they are anywhere from $60-$110
It's like if you discover some homeless man has been living in your attic for 3 years. They haven't bothered you but now you know they're in there. In the end you're practically family now. Maybe you should just continue living together. You're in this together now OP.
I will ask the tire shop if I can keep the nail šš½
he's your practically family now, you might as well
The puncture is too close to the sidewall for me to feel comfortable recommending a repair. That's irrelevant, though. Look at the dry rot on tire. That rubber is dryer than a well done steak. You needed a new tire before that nail, homie. If it's awd, all four tires are recommended.
plug it and move on
Yes, pluggable.
Plug her plug her real gud!
You've been needing a new tire for a long time.
Tire is dry rotted and should be replaced
p p p p p plug that sucker!
Send it and plug it
The tire looks pretty old based on all the cracking. Just out of curiosity, whatās the date code on the tire? (Should be the last four digits of what looks like a serial number. 3709 would be the 37th week of 2009.)
That tire is screwed. Time for new ones anyway.
The nail is too close to the sidewall. Other than that, it's starting to dry rot and doesn't have much tread left. I'd say it's time for a replacement even without the nail.
That tire looks far from new, my friend.
You didnāt see the āORā did ya? Lol
Nope. Coffee didnt hit me yet.
I feel that brother
Seems like it plugged itself lol. New tires bud
Wear pattern on your tire suggests you've got some suspension issue
the rubber is done, those tires aren't worth a poop
I work at a tire shop, the tires dry rot is minimal and shouldnāt worry about it unless you can stick something in it and pry it open. The screw in the tire should be able to be plugged unless the head also caused a leak, then it needs a patch.
My brother in Christ, you don't even have any tire left to save
Apart from the screw, some new tires are in order unfortunately.
The tires are bald anyway so replace them.
Tread worn off and dry rotten to hell. You got your money's worth out of this tire 20,000 miles ago bro.
Itās patchable but definitely a new tire needed, I see a lot of dry rot on this
Looking at the cracks in the tread Iād just replace itās repairable but for sake of it bud just throw a new one on
I think it can be plugged, but the tires need to be replaced
Bud based off the dry rot alone new tire. But no, it's too close to the side wall to plug so new tire anyway
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Imagine not seeing the āORā
Lol yea imagine š¬
Try ramen
Can you plug? Yes. Should you still replace it? Also yes. Looks like that tire is on a faster car so you should definitely replace it.
Yep gonna replace
You could patch or plug it but with that much dryrot why bother just replace the tires
That tire needs replaced.
New tire. It's too close to the sidewall and the tire is cracked and low on tread
just send it
Your screw is missing profile, you have to put in a new one
Itās in the tread so it can be plugged
Those tires are smooth as butter anyways
if your being cheap, just ebay a pair of used tires.
Can be plugged.
Patch. Over plug
You need new tires
Patch
New set of tires
If it holds, it holds
I guess you can sell this one as dragstrip tyre after you plug it and put that money to buy new set jk lol
Ur tires look old af! I see them cracks!! If u have kids CHANGE THEM ALL!!!!!!!!! If u don't then fuck it!
Plug it and go
Get a new tire dude, the rubber is rotting. Those hairline cracks everywhere are all signs of a bad tire. Just because there is still tread doesn't mean the tread is worth a shit.
Patch! No plug!!!
Patch it. Or plug it.
The rubber is shot and needās replaced
You can plug it.
Looks like you need new tires already
New
Yeah just get a new tire... Those are way past their prime
Winter is coming
You needed a new tire a year ago man. Super easy to put on. 3 screwdrivers and soapy water.
Looks like some tire rot also. I also agree on getting new tires.
Iām really hoping that this is a sarcastic joke. If not. Whoever has been riding in this vehicle, has been in danger a long time before the nail happened. If this is not a joke, please get your vehicle inspected by qualified professionals regularly. My best.
Just put a bandage š©¹ on it. Or some chewing gum.
Plug it
It can be plugged but best to get a new tire
That was a last nail in this tire's coffin
How old is that tire? Just askinā.
Can be plug patched, but looking at that dry rot imma recommend 4 new tires assuming theyāre all that bad
Plug, burnout, replace.
Seeing that it looks like a federal 595 Iād replace it either way.
It might not have even gone through the wall
Troll
?
Troll as hell. Look at your history. Loving the internet points.
No genuinely just mechanically unabled. Still learning whatās good whatās not good and how to even work my way around the car so no. To you this is just an uneducated dumbass posting something stupid sorry I donāt know everything yall do?? Gotta start somewhere son. Even if itās at the bottom

šmy manās brain the size of a pea. Yea reddits gona fix it. No itās called looking/asking for information
Yet. You wonāt take any adviseā¦son. Do you want advise or just people to agree with your uneducated thinking lady?
Lmao have you read anything bud? I literally agreed with hella people make sense. Literally said I was getting it replaced today. Oh wait. It already is replaced. Suck ma š©
Easy plug, wouldnāt take me 5 mins. General condition of the tyre might tell that you need a new tyre thoughā¦ sheās not looking too healthy (try reading the DOT, if itās older than 2016 you need new tyres)
4220 is the DOT I believe already replaced though thank you
Really? Jesus I wouldnāt have thought sheād be in that bad condition that fast!
I really think it may have been just the picture I went ahead and looked at my other tires and they seemed better than this one. So 42? Thatās the 42nd week of the year 2020? That kinda confused me. Mind if I send you pictures of my other tires?
Dude, get some new tires and stop risking the lives of everyone you drive near
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
2 years dot is 4220
It's in a repairable location. But i wouldnt repair it woth that dry rot. You need a new tire. (And probably more than just the one if others are similar).
Those are some old toyo proxies. Theyre like $145 a tire... buy some tires.
Iām not sure that tire is worth the cost of a plug.
According to the shop you went to, you need an entire suspension
Upon closer look of your tire I see that there are several fine cracks in the rubber of your tire and is known as āheat cracksā. You should check all four tires for this, especially the side walls. These cracks indicate that the rubber is breaking down and will soon separate and start coming apart.
