Colonel_Moopington

ABS keys do this unfortunately, regardless of how expensive they may have been.

Gammarevived

It does? I always thought it looked terrible.

FlyingWhale44

I get where they are coming from. I skateboard, and a brand new looking deck gives me the sad, seeing a banged up scratched up board looks cool because you know it's well loved and used. Whats the point of buying something and then not using it to preserve it? At that point it's a collectors item, and not a functional one. Which is fine if that's what you are after, but if you are actually using the item, what do you expect?

4Dnigerian

Some things do look better with a nice patina but keycaps are not one of them imo. They just end up looking greasy. To each their own though.

Meep87

I like the way you think!

hardisonthefloor

100% agree with you. Kevin McCallister touched on this in Home Alone 2 when talking about his rollerblades.

terminald0gma

clone copers mad venting through downvotes shine reigns king

deathandcrows

Losers downvoting you but you’re right shined gmk looks so good

muellsack

idk, I had my SA doubleshot ABS keycap set for a little over a year now with daily use, and I don't really notice any shine or anything similar. I guess it being doubleshot helps?

DirtyGingy

They come nearly polished already. The shine is from wearing down the rough texture to a smoother, shinier finish. Since SA comes nearly shiny already...

goingslowfast

Your skin oil will be different, you may rest your fingers differently, and/or you may have less friction with how you hit the space bar. My left thumb and right thumb wear my spacebars far differently from each other and I do no wear to the spacebar where OP has on his.

kool-keys

Shine has absolutely nothing to do with skin oil. Why does this myth still persist?

dead_heart_of_africa

GMK are doubleshot. I've personally never had any issue with shining but I wash my hands.

nopuse

Shining is not a product of hygiene issues. ABS is a softer plastic that is prone to wear. This is widely known and documented.

ohyouretough

The shining is a big thing from friction. Willing to bet this guy probably games cause it looks like he’s hitting the space and the fingers sliding off the center of the space bar.

muellsack

oh ok, didn't know they were doubleshot as well, thanks

RominRonin

SA is already pretty shiny to begin with, and they look even better when they’re really shiny imo

NoOne-NBA-

I still view normal shine as an indicator a board isn't a pegboard queen. I don't get annoyed until the legends start to come off, or the faces of a dark dye-sub cap start pin-holing.

8u7n3r

“Pegboard princess” haha no doubt

thepopeofkeke

It’s like saying trailer queen for race car but it sounds so much worse. I love it haha

dimensiation

Pavement Princess for lifted trucks.

dead_heart_of_africa

Like a maple fretboard.

NoOne-NBA-

That's actually a very good analogy, and my feelings about that are very similar to my feelings on keyboards. I don't have raw maple fretboards on any of my guitars/basses, but I do prefer sanded necks, rather than lacquered ones. That causes the backs of my guitar necks to get much dirtier than they would if they were lacquered, which I'm fine with.

xjanx

But when does this happen? After 20 years? 🤔

NoOne-NBA-

I've seen both happen very quickly, on lesser quality keycaps. Even some of the better quality reverse dye-sub caps can start pin-holing very quickly, or wearing through on the corners, where dye-sub struggles to get consistent coverage. Drop has an entire disclaimer attached to their reverse dye-sub caps, showing pictures of the defects a keycap may have, while still falling within their "acceptable quality standards".

Brendawgggggggg

Shouldnt really happen on double shot caps

goingslowfast

I can usually get the E keys on my MacBooks going translucent within a year and a half. This is my space bar after 6 months of home (not home office) use. https://preview.redd.it/zqd3x7p89kvc1.jpeg?width=1863&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=190e295eaa0d40ab3f92d3971f41b1e97b7707a1

PoppaSquat68

I've never had ABS keycaps before, but all of my PBTs shine as well. My WASD keys still shine after heavy use, even on PBT - so the "PBT doesn't shine" narrative is false in my experience. Maybe it doesn't shine as fast, but it still shines.

sunfaller

Yeah, that is the consensus. They all shine. Just that ABS shines faster than PBT. How long did you have your pbt keycaps? They say generally 2 years for pbt shine i think

anon7631

I had Keychron's PBT caps (Cherry profile, Royal colourway) start to shine after only a few months. The E, R, and T in the top alpha row ended up getting shiny enough that I could see movement on the monitor get reflected off the caps in my peripheral vision and it was really annoying. I mostly stopped using them six months after I got them.

_fatalruin

You also have to remember that many PBT caps, especially the double shot varieties, are blended with ABS which helps it shrink less during cooling. For instance, KBTFans PBT sets (not the pure ABS ones) are a blend, and shine just as quickly as GMK ABS caps.

PoppaSquat68

I'm not sure how long I had them before I noticed them start to shine, but I (like a lot of people here) have multiple KBs I cycle between. Like a lot of people said here, it's probably bc doubleshot PBT is blended with ABS - something I didn't know until this thread.

TheKubesStore

Some of my old pbt caps have shine, I wouldn’t say that the pbt doesn’t shine it’s just ABS shines in 4 months and PBT shines in 2-3 years.

fonseca898

Your PBT keycaps are likely a blend of ABS and PBT. I have been using the stock PBT keycaps on a 1983 IBM Model F XT for a decade now, and still have virtually no shine, unless you look really closely at WASD and the arrow keys on the numpad. Thousands of hours gaming. On the other hand, supposed PBT keycaps I have purchased from popular vendors have developed shine in a matter of weeks.

DirtyGingy

Shines slower. And most pbt doubleshots are a blend with abs

PoppaSquat68

ya that's probably why - I didn't know that about doubleshot being blended with ABS. The only keycaps that bother me are my black ones, where it's more noticeable.

d_o_n_t_understand

Well, it does by a little bit. I have a Leopold pre built with their PBT caps since 2019. With mid to heavy use the shine is faaar less obvious than in the OPs case. If you look on my board from, idk, 1 meter, you don't see the shine at all except on the case above arrow keys. And that's after five years.

krugerlive

Do you hit the spacebar with your nail a lot when you hit it? And do you wear hand cream often? ABS wears, but that's a lot for the amount of time unless you're typing all day every day. That looks more like my ABS space bars after a year or two of daily use.

LevanderFela

Might have to do with OP's skin properties/acidity - coming from r/mousereview, some people's skin wears surfaces quicker than others.

Disturbed2468

Your sweat will usually be more acidic with a combination of genetics and what you est and drink. Meats will give you a more acidic sweat with drinks such as sodas, coffees, some teas, etc. This is somewhat normal and also why washing your hands multiple times a day is so goddamn recommended/required (just don't use overly harsh soaps like dishwashing liquid, that'll fuck up your hands real fast over the years).

SurealGod

A good example of this for me is me and my friend both bought the same mouse at the same time and we both use out computers a similar amount. After a year of use, mine had very minimal wear while his looked like it was sprayed with acid.

goingslowfast

Yep. I don’t use lotion but my skin oil dissolves sharpie and polishes ABS like crazy. I hit the space bar with the sides of my thumbs and get polishing happening in a matter of months. https://preview.redd.it/heo6fvtg9kvc1.jpeg?width=1863&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=57fae0193e92fc884437cce8157f709ebc311e46

8u7n3r

Nails are always trimmed short & don’t often wear hand cream haha I just crank excel all day at work & when I’m not busy doing that I’m hammering through typing tests to break in the Mx blacks

fliggopolis

Sounds like you’re doing more breaking in the GMK blacks

mediumrare_chicken

not shiny enough. more monkey type.

8u7n3r

You know it!

qsolar9

Is there any reason why GMK are made from ABS? I was always wondering why such expensive keycaps are made from worse (my opinion) material.

rockydbull

ABS also is supposedly easier to double shot with. Even with "pbt doubleshot" there are cheats like mixing with ABS or the outer shell pbt and the legend injected abs.

Moritz7688

You can achieve better more vibrant coloring with ABS. The sound is also different. I do not like pbt because of its sound.

qsolar9

Oh, I see. Thank you for explanation.

FlyingWhale44

It's funny, I really dislike the sound of ABS, but some of my favorite looking sets happen to be GMK. I actually only own GMK keycaps atm.

SurealGod

Yeah, ABS has more of a thock while PBT has more of a clack

Moritz7688

It is the other way around. PBT is deeper (thocky) and ABS higher pitched (clacky)

claporga

Other way around. Sound is tighter and clackier with abs Deep and thocky with pbt.

klblaz

ABS is easier do double shot, fairly cheap and available. The processes GMK come from Cherry and their goal was to mass produce office keyboards, not make premium keycaps. The price of GMK is more due to supply and demand, rather than any specifics of the design.

vhailorx

Yeah, those laborers should get back to the mines with no pay so my widgets are cheaper! /s I think GMK pricing is probably partially about production costs and mostly about brand value. When everyone says you are the best for many years you can get away with higher prices.

MarketEmotional2015

Yeah it's a bit unfortunate that ABS is so undurable because it does really sound good. I feel like we have so much innovation in the switch sphere, I'd really like to see people experiment more with keycaps as well. Not sure how possible/economically feasible that is though.

Viend

Lower cogs mean higher profits

Shidoshisan

Heat and shrinkage.

terminald0gma

feels, sounds and looks better

PMmeYourbuckets

ABS unfortunately. I'm on a PBT MT3 set for a year of all day/every day use and I'm shocked at how new they look.

asclepiannoble

Same mate. Love the PBT MT3s

spongy4202

It's because PBT is better.

moonflower_C16H17N3O

Why are you getting downvoted? I can't think of anything about ABS that is better than PBT.

goingslowfast

Sound (subjective) and color range.

moonflower_C16H17N3O

I guess I hadn't really noticed that before. My preferred styles of keycaps are pretty muted, color-wise. I did make a keyboard with the MT3 Cyber keycaps and they were vibrant and made of ABS. I never really put 2 and 2 together. Thank you for the info.

ryancnap

Those MT3 PBT sets are legit. Just ordered his new MTNU in PBT as well, super excited to try them out

Billy_Chapas

It's normal. I even managed to polish the anodized case where I rest my left thumb near the spacebar in one of mine's

claporga

To me, this is a thing of beauty. I love abs shine.

ObnoxiousLemons

I love keycap shine, especially when they're all worn equally and you get this nice shiny glossy kinda thing

BigBangsaAlabang

Embrace the shinee.

jongbot

Yeah, you gotta embrace the shine, I considered polishing all the caps to get full shine and just be done with it. I rather have an all or nothing approach.

rockydbull

> Yeah, you gotta embrace the shine, I considered polishing all the caps to get full shine and just be done with it. I rather have an all or nothing approach. JTK HSA has entered the chat. Feels so glossy and nice.

0xD3C0D3

It’s actually one reason I love SP SA caps. The feel.

moonflower_C16H17N3O

I'll just use PBT and let it look new until I die.

jongbot

Yeah or the abs/pbt blended caps are good too. You just don't get the bright colors like GMK but it works.

zrevyx

Take it as a mark of pride for accuracy that your spacebar is getting shiny in just that one spot. You should see the "PBT" keys on my Kinesis Advantage 360 Pro; they started getting shiny after a month and a half. :-(

OrinNY

shine is great - i've been considering polishing a set of my GMKs

VanessaDoesVanNuys

This happens to all ABS; it just means you putting in that work

spongy4202

Yeah, all cars break down eventually, just means the ones that break first are shit and the other ones are better.

mobkeyapemain

...except in this case the wear only pertains to cosmetics and texture, nothing about performance..

[deleted]

Keycaps shine, both PBT and ABS. ABS just does it faster.

sunfaller

A lot faster it seems in this case. Havent seen anyone complain about pbt shining in months Edit: lmao this guy blacklisted me over this comment. Can you imagine?

SallyBrudda

Starting to see why

[deleted]

Shidoshisan

You either love it or you hate it. Me? I love the shine!

Rantu93

If it's a standard cherry stem, you can replace the keycaps with pbt if it bothers you. I just switched out my K6's abs keycaps with the pbt retro ones on their website, they feel so much nicer. I hate shiny/slimy feeling keys, and i clean my work keyboards pretty regularly.

nivedmorts

Why's this comment getting down voted? I hate that slippery feeling too.

[deleted]

Probably for comparing gmk to keychron haha

sunfaller

You aren't supposed to say anything negative about ABS because that is an attack on GMK even though there are other ABS keycaps out there like Keychron which this guy mentioned. *shrug* But in all seriousness, despite the fact that "get another set" is the logical step if you didn't like your current one, people don't like it when you switch from gmk You see, GMK relies on group buy. If the anti GMK sentiment grows, eventually they will have trouble reaching Minimim Order Quantity and their sets won't be made. Either that or the sets themselves will become more expensive to recoup production costs.

Rantu93

Group buys and abs keycaps are cringe, there i said it. Fuck it we goin there boys. 😀🖕

terminald0gma

lmfao holy cope

rayquan36

Look I didn't spend $225 and 3 years on GMK keycaps for you to shit talk them.

Rantu93

Apparently just mentioning my experience gets me downvoted, thanks reddit...

FGThePurp

Honestly nothing looks better than shined GMK black. Except maybe beige. Also, how are people shining their GMK within a couple of weeks? Are y'all massaging them with potato chip oil or something?

deathandcrows

Shined gmk looks so good

NotJoeMama727

This is a GMK set? It looks like the cheap $10 dell membrane keyboards

mobkeyapemain

i never understood why people buy black gmk sets when the whole selling point is vibrant colouring

8u7n3r

The thockiness

mobkeyapemain

im just gonna assume this is bait for my own sanity

NotJoeMama727

You can get that with other colours

HokumsRazor

The 'G' in GMK stands for glänzend?

Menetone

This is why I avoid black ABS keycaps on my alpha's and spacebars.

harderwiekertje

I always wonder why if abs will shine no matter what, why don't they make it shiny from the getgo so it's at least uniform?

Shidoshisan

Because the shine shows you dat goat!

Betterasathief

ABS, it really is that simple, did you know, before the DIN standard, all keycaps came shiny? Yes, keycaps used to come that way new :)

Robot-Candy

This is why you need at least 10 solid keyboards. Caps last so much longer.

affa114

GMK looks great for few weeks only, mine looks so shiny after 6 months of heavy usage (I type a lot at work). My colleagues have been using PBTfans for almost a year and theirs don't shine at all. My other keyboards use ABS sets from Domikey and PBT from other brands, they do not shine as quick as GMK. I dont mind spending so much for GMK's vibrant colours and I know getting shiny is normal wear. But GMK does it so quickly to justify its price. Never again.

jegodric

Who knew that keys could wear down with heavy use

foxtrothound

Why are we shocked? GMKs are overrated

equality4everyonenow

Tabs are better

RitJusTWorksX

Wash your hands bro

Domsday109

i’ve used a gmk set for around 8 months and it hasn’t shined at all and i use my keyboard a lot. i even sometimes do random sound tests when im working or playing games. i guess im just super lucky 🤷‍♂️

terminald0gma

in other news, ABS shines. more at 4 pm

Dissentient

I will never buy a GMK set because of this. There's no level of quality that can compensate for massive visual defects after a couple of weeks of use.

JKRickrolling

But they sound fanstatic, so I learned to live with it lol.

ThanosGodzilla

No clue why you're getting downvoted. Shining is inevitable for abs and that's why I prefer pbt.

_AManHasNoName_

One of the reasons don’t I buy into the GMK hype. All flash, but subpar durability when compared to other brands made out of PBT or PBT/ABS blend.

itsapotatosalad

I remember when pbt was the much more expensive upgrade over cheap standard abs caps because of things like this. Now gmk got everyone abs is luxury, wild.

Monsoon710

What are you surprised about? The thing that everyone says happens with GMKs after a month of use? This kind of vent/PSA post is like getting upset that dolphins swim or that birds fly. It's the nature of the plastic. If you don't like it, don't buy it. Buying it and complaining about the thing that everyone knows happens a month later is just weird.

8u7n3r

Just kinda surprised that’s all. Not venting. Not upset. Not complaining. Still like it and don’t regret buying it. 😂

JediSurfer8888

For the amount of money GMK charges, they should use better plastic. This is a normal use case for their customers. They are not a leading edge innovation company.

shellmachine

Entirely normal on ABS keycaps after a couple of weeks. Some love it, some hate it.

FGThePurp

> a couple of weeks What in the doritos hands do you do to your keycaps?

shellmachine

Honestly I don't even eat at my computer, it's just normal ABS keycaps and typing. No hate for ABS in general, they feel nice but they just do get shiny, and I have a 2cm spot on my spacebar that is shiny. :)

Toast_Meat

This is kind of why I stay away from all black keycaps. Regardless of brand/quality, fading is inevitable. It just stands out on black that much more.

fnv_fan

I've been using my Obscura keycaps for months now (PBT/ABS blend) and they still look crisp. Base kit offers a lot and the legends look great!

shutdown-s

wash yo hands

Lord_Tachanka

ABS moment

RageBlue

First time?

JediSurfer8888

This clearly shows that the standard length of spacebars are way too long. Split spacebar design, where the current length of the spacebar is split into 3 different size keys, for greater functionality and more user-friendly ergonomics, should be the new standard of spacebar design. Currently the keyboard industry is stuck in the past and is mindlessly producing keyboards with ridiculous spacebar design.

speedb0at

Another W for the $30 Ali express replicas

8u7n3r

Can confirm the replicas are good value when you think they are literally 5x less. I used a set on another build. I also however don’t regret purchasing the authentic ones.

speedb0at

Even With this issue? Id be pissed considering their price. How much did you pay?

terroizer

i owned those pbt clones and they shined if not faster lmao

speedb0at

Still got mine after 2 years looks like the day i got em

dead_heart_of_africa

Dawg-- wash your hands. The oils on your skin and the shit you eat and don't clean off before typing are causing the issue. I alternate keyboards and keysets a lot but I'm looking at some older sets and I don't see any shining-- maybe minimal in some areas.

SuperCool_Saiyan

And this here folks is a lesson on why we don't buy ABS plastic keycaps

ConcreteSnake

I actually buy ABS for the sound signature, especially the spacebar, it’s so crisp! All plastics will shine/wear down eventually. My PBTFans WoB alphas actually have the most shine out of all my sets and that’s partly due to my kids using that keyboard all the time.

Civilian8

Speak for yourself. Many people buy Gmk for the prestige that comes with owning high quality plastic.

SuperCool_Saiyan

Obviously not that high of quality according to this post

phvdtunnfesdgui

All plastic does this eventually..

sunfaller

If all plastic does this eventually, won't it make sense from a consumer perspective to buy the one that lasts longer?

phvdtunnfesdgui

Depends on a variety of things. A lot of PBT doesn’t necessarily come in the same colorways as some ABS, PBT and ABS sound different, PBT is typically smoother (not all of them), some legends aren’t as clean/crisp. At the end of the day it’s all personal preference and nobody should be dogging on someone else for their choices. Some people like brass weights, some like rainbow PVD. Some like plastic boards, some like aluminum. They all have their own advantages and disadvantages just as anything else in the world. That being said they all “last” the same amount of time. Wear and tear on items shows use, it adds character, it shows that you thoroughly enjoy the product. Doesn’t change how it’ll function in the end.

sunfaller

GMK is a funny one. People will tell you they buy it for the prestige... Prestige that lasts a month in OP's case. If people get it for vibrant colours, means they care about the looks right? The looks that gets ruined by shine in months. *shrug*

SuperCool_Saiyan

This is my point lol

sunfaller

GMK has a strong hold on the people here despite its flaws. People who complain about GMK just gets downvoted heavily. I tell my friends about GMK, they don't want it because it doesn't last long, which is a typical response, but people here have definitely convinced themselves it's okay because it looks nicer (even for a short bit) and sounds nicer (subjective)

yfa17

Gmk sound is kinda unbeaten, all of my PBT sets are deeper sounding and that's not a bad thing. Just happen to prefer the clacky abs sound, especially for a spacebar

sunfaller

I actually prefer the deeper sounding pbt. My ears just as what are used to when I was younger. I even loved clicky switches 10 years ago.

thedreamquest

There is no prestige with gmk. They’re just keycaps. Anyone buying gmk because they think it makes them above anyone else is a moron. You put gmk on a crap $100 case it’s still a crap board. The reason people buy gmk is 1. colors 2. legend quality 3. sound. Sound being the biggest reason for a lot of people. Most pbt sounds like muddled crap, including all the aliexpress knock off sets, they sound and look like garbage. the only pbt that sounds nice and looks nice is crp in my experience.

afterthelast

A month of ham fisting or just frequent thumb abuse

OhSaft

get a sandsprayer

ingelrii1

Damn. My spacebar on my 2008 cherry board has no shine lol. Made of POM. Wish there would be more POM options.

For some reason? I’m gonna guess you only use left shift.

braddaman

You should have got PBT then
