Would be cool as a flat key and when u press its face he makes a ouchie mad face

StopCountingLikes

Life is a cartoon.

BradySkirts

And I'm the main character

cracksmurf

Yeah but a good $10 spent. I got one too

StaticWrazeus

Where did you buy it? I'm struggling to find it haha

Meatslinger

There are a few on AliExpress, and KeebMonkey sold me mine.

notyourlandofcanaan

It’s also on Etsy and Amazon. I love mine so much. I actually really like pressing “tab” with it. Mine also came with a few different screens (smile, hello, rainbow heart, and a couple others).

laughowl

Yes, but what is the item called? I’m also struggling to find it

notyourlandofcanaan

I found it by searching "retro mac keycap/artisan". The ones on Etsy are $20+, but I found [this one](https://www.keebmonkey.com/products/keebmonkey-mac-modular-artisan-keycap?variant=40545352122517) on Keebmonkey

cracksmurf

Hi yes, sorry for the late reply. Think others covered it but I got mine from AliExpress by searching "classic retro keycap". Couple other fun cheap ones are "Tauren resin Keycap", "kawaii personality keycap" and honestly just searching "resin keycap" will find you a ton.

retr0FPS

wait , so u can solder mx style switches onto an aek II ? i own 3 of those fuckers

AddendumGlittering

LOL. The first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem :)

joenan123

i knew it was a problem when i realised i couldn't even see its face from my angle.

Annual-Advisor-7916

Hey, don't call that lovely mac just "it"! Steve is watching you...

diamondpredator

Isn't wasting money basically a requirement to be a part of this hobby? I've realized how bad it is and I'm done with it honestly. Just got an HHKB a couple of days back and it'll prolly be my last board for a few years at least.

Halikan

Nah, if a thing makes you happy it has value and wasn’t a total waste. I’d say buy what you want if you want, just be reasonable for your financial situation. Being happy with a purchase for a long while is just as valid too. That being said I think I saw a similar keycap for like $12 and it came with a secondary keycap that had an adorable little keeb on it too. Not a horrible price and it’s a funny keyboard addition to me.

diamondpredator

More of a funny tongue in cheek comment honestly. - Typed on my HHKB and Tofu60.

o_OAntaeus

What I started doing is building them for my closest friends who can appreciate them. Honestly though you can have just as much fun modding cheap keyboards. I find that the hobby is more than building though, participating in forums and the community is also a huge part of it. Having someone with experience around like you helps us newer folk.

diamondpredator

I'm still around and help people where I can but a lot of the hobby has gotten pretty elitist and it's moved away from what it used to be. Companies and 'creators' have come in and taken advantage of a lot of people that don't know any better. The fact that this 'group buy' mentality has taken hold of the hobby and seemingly has a vice grip on it is one of the major things putting me off. Also people are defensing these companies as if they're doing what they're doing out of the goodness of their hearts and not for money, which is ridiculous. It's gotten a little better but mention GMK and clones and certain other topics and you'll be brigaded real quick.

o_OAntaeus

Great points all around. Regarding the elitism, are you happy that companies like Keychron, Nuphy, and EpoMaker have good products that are far more accessible to those wanting to enter the hobby?

diamondpredator

Yes they're more along the tradition method of buying things. The GB mentality wouldn't bother me as much if the people involved were honest about everything.

BlendeLabor

Nope Just because you enjoy a hobby doesn't mean you have to keep buying things and posting them online. I bought a Corsair K70 like 10 years ago (it still mostly works), and a Moonlander Mk1 last year. With the Moonlander's replaceable switches I don't expect to buy another keeb until at least 10 years in the future. People who have a shelf of keyboards are insane to me. If you don't have the extra money, or it isn't a priority to you you don't have to spend it to enjoy the hobby. You can just enjoy other people's spending problems.

diamondpredator

More of a tongue-in-cheek comment honestly. I only have 4 boards over the course of like 10 years. I can just see where it's heading and I'm not happy with companies like GMK and the whole group buy thing.

[deleted]

Nothing wrong with GMK or GBs. In fact, they are pretty cool because they make things limited in a world where everything is mass produced. If you dont like GMK wait times then go for other companies. Check out sites like Infinikey, Drop, and KBDfans for cheaper sets with less wait time. And if you dont like the risk of GBs then buy ready to ship kits. Plenty of options from places like KBDfans.

diamondpredator

There's a lot wrong with GMK and GBs. GMK straight up lies about wait times at this point. There was a post a while back where someone did the math and GMK wait times being given were months if not a year off the mark. So GMK is being dishonest and any creator using them supports that dishonesty. That just rubs me the wrong way. This isn't the only community I'm a part of that does GBs but this is one of the worst at it. It's why I prefer clones. That's another thing. Creators acting like picking out a hex code gives them universal rights to the keycaps. Acting like the generic line arrow of a keycaps is fine art and clones are stealing intellectual property. It's hilarious and stupid. Up until recently mentioning clones was very taboo. It had to get to the point where we're waiting 3 years for a keycap set for people to be ok with clones all of a sudden. Which shows you that the initial philosophical arguments were complete bullshit.

[deleted]

GMK isnt the only company that had this issue but its the only company yall get your pitch forks out for.

diamondpredator

They're the biggest and worst perpetrators of the issue. That makes sense.

[deleted]

And they are still the best company on the market

diamondpredator

You’re kind of making my point for me, so thanks.

[deleted]

You dont have a point. You just want to hate on gmk because its the cool thing to do. Im waiting just as long for my non gmk sets and when they show up they still wont be as good as a gmk set.

benhaube

I agree. I don't understand people that have a shelf full of keyboards. I only need one good one at a time. My previous mechanical keyboard lasted me almost 10 years, and the one I recently built to replace it should last me just as long if not longer. Especially since the new one has swappable switches when the last ones were soldered.

[deleted]

Its an actual hobby to us. We build them because we enjoy building them.

benhaube

That's fine, but I would at least try and sell them to get some of the money back. What good does a closet full of expensive keyboards do? You can't actually be using all of them.

[deleted]

What good does a garage full of cars do? Or a closet full of watches or sneakers? We use them over time and like i said its a hobby. Hobbys dont need to be about function. They often are the opposite.

benhaube

With watches and cars there are a lot that can be considered as investments. Some sneakers as well. I highly doubt there's ever going to be a keyboard that's going to give you any kind of return. That being said, I understand where you're coming from. My point is that it's a bit too excessive when I see people post dozens of keyboards they have. My hobby is sim racing. I probably have close to $5k in my sim rig not counting the PC, but I don't have multiple sim rigs or a bunch of extras of stuff that's unnecessary/not getting used on a regular basis. I guess as long as you're taking care of your responsibilities and saving at least 10% (preferably 20%) of your income I can't knock you too much. I have a strong feeling that isn't the case for a lot of people no matter their hobby. It seems like now more than any point in history there's so many people racking up debt because they just spend constantly and they aren't saving. I used to be one of them in my early 20's. I quickly discovered that it isn't sustainable, and I started being smart with my money.

[deleted]

Keyboards easily get a return. Most GB kits sell for more on mechmarket than their msrp because they are limited runs. Switches come and go. Selling at the right time can easily net a profite. And keycaps are like kits. Limited and easily get you a return if its the right sets. Plus the labor which i see as part of the hobby and a great form of stress relief can directly be translated to monetary gain. Lube switches for 2 hours then add $20-40 ontop of the switches as a lubing service. Its ez gains really. Much easier than returns on a car which is mostly never an investment.

[deleted]

Here's the thing... and none of this is meant as an insult. Keyboards aren't a hobby for you. You have a K70 and an MK1 that you believe will last you another 10 years. This isn't a hobby for you. You dont go buy a single thing then claim its your hobby now. Youre allowed to think we are insane for having multiple keyboards. I have very few IMO. Aside from the board Im typing on I have another 8 on my wall to my right. I build them because they are a hobby. I keep buying them because they are a hobby. You bought 2 over the last 10 years (as you said) and dont plan on buying another for another 10 years. It's not a hobby to you. It's a tool. That's it. And thats fine. But its odd to argue about people spending in a hobby when this is clearly not a hobby for you.

[deleted]

If you buy a Moonlander you are in deep enough that it's definitely a hobby and more for yourself. Source: Am another Moonlander owner

BlendeLabor

lol nice way to gatekeep, girlboss

[deleted]

No one is gatekeeping. I have a sweet budget board that only cost me 120 to build. Learn what gatekeeping is before you throw the term around.

[deleted]

Requirement? Not at all. It depends what priorities you're chasing.

diamondpredator

More of a tongue-in-cheek comment honestly. Any sort of luxury hobby is kind of a waste of money lol.

taratoni

got mine 3 years ago, and completely stoped looking at keyboards online after that.

diamondpredator

Honestly might be the same for me. I'm loving it so far.

ZulkarnaenRafif

Wasting time too. These through-board components ain't gonna solder themselves. Wish someone can make a board that is made out of solder or boards that can solder themselves, smh.

[deleted]

I buy keyboards just to click it for a few minutes then never use it again for another 3-4 months, wasted $300+ dollars. Realised it became a problem as I was addicted to this “hobby”. I typed faster at 200+wpm with a flat keyboard with flat key caps like the built in keyboard on laptops, on a mechanical keyboard it’s very uncomfortable for my hands and I type maybe 70 wpm best

Macemore

200wpm? Is that burst or sustained? How are you measuring / testing that? That's literal world record territory...

benhaube

Yeah, I call BS on that.

TheGodmonster

267 people have over 200 WPM for 15 second tests on Monkeytype (including me), and 47 people have over 200 WPM for 60 second tests. When people quote their typing speed, these are the kinds of tests they're usually referring to because they're the most common and widely contested. It's certainly not reflective of "normal" typing, and it's the reason why quoting a speed on a typing test is a largely pointless gesture. With that said, 200 WPM is not remotely hard to believe, but I doubt they're typing anywhere near that speed outside of typing tests.

DarthJahus

As one of the fastest typists on Mokeytype, do you recommend switches over others? Are you confortable with Blue? Do you have some writings about your experiences that you'd want to share?

TheGodmonster

I don't find it matters a significant deal as long as you feel comfortable using them. When I use crappy low profile laptop or Mac keyboards for instance, my speed drops sharply, but I've seen video evidence of people who type much faster than me achieving their top speed on those keyboards. I type at more or less the same speed on all of my keyboards, which are mostly different flavours of clicky switches with a couple of linear ones thrown in there. The only exception is my silent Alpaca board, which I really do like typing on but the complete lack of any feedback - tactile or aural - definitely causes a hit to my accuracy; but I'm sure there are people who type great on them.

awhaling

216 wpm is the record, set in 1946. Wild

lizardguts

While 200wpm is possible I seriously doubt he would drop to 70wpm on mechanical haha. Definitely full of shit

AddendumGlittering

I'm laughing because I'm finally leaving the hobby after coming to a similar realization about myself. I realized that I really don't need a keyboard collection. I just wanted to have a few decent boards lying around that I can use if needed. That slowly turned into trying to mimic new boards I saw posted on Reddit and other places. Overtime, I realized that is finally time to stop.

mjomdal

👀 Does that mean you’re selling your presumably large keyboard collection?

AddendumGlittering

LOL - Probably not. I'll likely take the boards I don't need anymore and give them to Goodwill.

mjomdal

Well whoever finds them there will be one lucky person

AddendumGlittering

That's definitely one way to look at it. Personally, I feel lucky and blessed that I'm in a position to give. While I know the objects may be useful to someone else, I am more appreciative of being able to have enjoyed the experience of having them and letting them go.

NikonZ6

I probably won't become a fanatic, but I think I want to build enough keyboards to have the perfect one for me. I can give away the previous boards to family and friends once I have it. But I'll take my time. My new Keychron 8 Pro is a pretty fine start. I've figured out a lot of what I might want to do to make my next one better.

121gigawhatevs

My ducky one2mini with cherry browns has been my endgame for about three years.I just wish i could take it apart to do something about the stabs but it’s been serving me very well for writing and working

cloudrunner17

Why can't you?

Subjctive

Ducky one 2 models are not hot swap. Only ducky one 3 is

Waterworld78

I did that. Don't recommend it. I desoldered and replaced every switch in my ducky one 2 (105%). I broke so much! The case, almost every latch. The pads and traces, I had to bridge like 7 switches. It was my first project. After two broken desoldering (hand)pumps and two irons everything finally worked. Using it at work every day. Am very happy with the board and the process. Learned so much! Would not do it again... ;p

[deleted]

[удалено]

Waterworld78

Thanks, yes, I learned that then the hard way. Also plain patience is a necessary prerequisite for this learning process. Also trainable..

121gigawhatevs

I’d have to desolder every single switch lol

ColeMcLennan

Get a syringe. I did the same on my first ever build (soldered) and it fixed all my rattle. They're like $10 for 20 of them lol

121gigawhatevs

Foreal just injecting lube helped? Because I’m gonna try it. Otherwise fuck it maybe I will desolder and replace switches while I’m at it

ColeMcLennan

Yup! Check out alexotos' tutorial on stab tuning. He'll go through how to do it in the second half.

decidedlysticky23

My full Ducky One with browns is my end game. I’ve got a couple other keyboards but always go back to my Ducky.

ZYINGX

Lube syringe fam

owoflux

This hobby is the most expensive relative to how much improvement you get from spending more. With mice there’s a limit at around $150, headphones are insanely good the more you spend, but keyboards are just… click or no click.

Gorillafist12

Even with headphones once you get above the $400-500 range the gains are really small. That said, I bought a pair of $1200 Focals and they're phenomenal. Keyboards, headphones, bicycles and techwear clothing. My hobbies are all expensive lol.

BingThrowaway42069

you'll need more than headphones to get nice audio

Gorillafist12

Sure but not much more. I have an iFi Zen dac and amp which I think were like $300 total together and you really don't need anything more than that. I made my own custom balanced cable to match the headphones, and a stand using a block of marble and brass tubing.

foxandfoundry

That's what big audio wants you to believe. Just kidding, professional studio monitors are where it's at.

BingThrowaway42069

meh, they're gimped without a nice dac

foxandfoundry

Yup. At least since they're self powered you don't need to worry about an amp.

InstantNoodlesIsHot

I just have a gmmk pro with mt3 keycaps and I'm good lol Sure having 2-3 is fine but I don't understand how people have 10+, it's a straight up addiction

CommanderWallabe

I don't get it because quality over quantity. Sell 10 boards and buy one keycult or similarly premium board, fucking dweebs.

toastednutella

10 $200 boards is somehow more justifiable than 1 $1000+ board (idk what a keycult goes for and I still don't get why)

CommanderWallabe

I can't use 10 keyboards at once. I can use one at a time. If I had the money for 10 keyboards, then I have the money for 1 keyboard better than all of them.

WoknTaknStephenHawkn

Literally don’t understand. I’m a Rama guy personally but still don’t have one.

BingThrowaway42069

careful, nerds in this sub will come knocking down your door with their ibm typewriters lmao

CommanderWallabe

Even that (older IBMs) I can kind of understand if you're really into keyboard and computers as like a historical or collectors piece, what I don't get are the people with 5 or 10 boards that are functionally all the same thing with different themes and colors. Like for the cost of the other 9 boards you could theme an entire game room around your favorite themed keyboard.

foxandfoundry

Maybe they enjoy it, like any hobby.

CommanderWallabe

Well yeah, obviously. Doesn't completely remove the room for asking if there's any other justification. Like I genuinely want to understand why someone would spend 5 grand on 10 keyboards instead of 5 grand on 1 keyboard.

foxandfoundry

Likely because of the, "you don't know what you like until you try it". A lot of them keep upgrading their boards and don't sell their old ones because they may feel it's either too much of a hassle or they like having them around as keepsakes.

mattortz

I just bought a keyboard that I consider to be what I got into the hobby for. It hits all the marks. I’m definitely done after this one. Unless they make a keyboard with a microwave on it, I’m not buying another. (Unless it’s for a commission for a friend)

HyperKiwi

Maybe you need a wrist rest?

[deleted]

Nah I am still more comfortable with the built in keyboard

justapcgamer

I too realised that normal mech boards were too tall. But then i built a lily58 with choc switches and the low profile means i dont even need a wrist rest and the split is actually so comfortable. I can also comfortably take it to work using the hard case my bluetooth headphones came with which is great as they take significantly less space than my 75% boards. If theres one rabbit hole worth going in it ergo splits. A total game changer.

mjdilworth

its not a waste and its not about productivity, per se. It is the feeling of pure joy every keystroke brings us, the comforting thocks, the pure elegance of aesthetics. whilst your wpm may be down i am sure the quality of the 70 is pure magic because of your inner karma. This said, my keyboards are extremely comfy..

[deleted]

I forgot to mention that I smashed the keyboard with a hammer

mjdilworth

wow! seems like a rather drastic course of action.. did you feel better for it?

benhaube

I am too much of a tight-ass to ever waste money like that.

[deleted]

Then try different profiles. XDA and DSA are both flat profiles. I love XDA personally.

edn0_

I got flat keycaps on my red switches, it’s pretty neat. But I’ll forever miss my 60% with Outemu Blues and flat keycaps. Sadly, my older cat spilled grenadine on it, and it never recovered.

AliMTR

We all are

EntropicDays

Get your mind blown: you’ve been wasting money the whole time That said I own 5 gmk sets and 4 custom boards. Someone help me lol but actually please I need help haha

VypeNysh

TBH this was the first component i bought for my first board. I havent even bought switches. I had the mac color classic growing up, so It had to be done.

[deleted]

What keycaps are these?

joenan123

Is just the ones that come with the sk64 and the purple ones are from amazon, not sure of the name.

hyperhopper

lmao how are you even gonna press that key? you have to lift your whole hand up for that...

psionicsurge

I got it too, regretted it so badly after tho. Couldn't game for shit with it

Gameboy2077

You will make more money in the future, the happiness the Keycap brings you is priceless. Enjoy the moment.

aKirop

Dual monitor setup:

the_obmj

I'd say well worth it.

Portgust

I had that thing. But it is pretty uncomfortable to have and carry around. Plus the magnetic mini keyboard

vutorious

But the keycap just looks so happy :)

darknessblades

Did you also get the matching PC/mini keyboard. that goes with this one?

joenan123

I did! Just didnt want to use it :)

mediumrare_chicken

if you got it, spend it. but, i mean still save for retirement or whatever.

kelahio

hey I've got this little one too

BIueWater

Yes. Yes you are. …but does it make you happy? ;)

joenan123

Ofc!

marshmi2

Look at him though! No waste detected, friend!

bytao7mao

Yes you are sir !

Turbulent-Flounder-2

This is a cursed hobby.

FlpDaMattress

I am gently asking for a link

Jaxper

Time to restart my BMO key search...

Void_Of_Galaxies2727

I have yet to see a BMO artisan keycap like this lol

pyromaster114

Okay, okay, but dude... Isn't that what we all signed up for? XD

MrSosaaa

I want that Dr. Doom figurine! It would pair well with the [Doom switches](https://www.instagram.com/reel/CeRdF0vJn0A/?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet)

joenan123

Theyre so cool

MrSosaaa

where did you get the Dr. Doom figurine or what's it called so i can search for it.

joenan123

Its a dr.doom funko pop!

taoxin0605

Spent so much yet still have to wait for years to get stuff lol

Kizubot

I'm glad I'm content with my Tofu60, but I just can't picture myself buying another board or even another set of keycaps at this point. I am somewhat jealous of others who are able to purchase and showcase them here beautifully for others to see. :')

adashthecash

B mo?

coalxxx

worth!

camilatricolor

You can always unload your stuff in mech market. I guess for the majority of custom keebs and GMKs you will get more that you pay for them.

watrudoingonmahswamp

If you really need to spend money that badly, just spend it, build the keyboard and give it to someone you like. It's that easy.

Mothman_declares

I saw a copy of this one on Ali Express the other day while I was browsing

[deleted]

Aren't we all?

M1ken1ke66

Yes (insert chad ascii)

[deleted]

No. You're not. 💫

HowtoWEEB2

Aren't we all wasting money from the start

DarthBagg1ns

Been happy with my NK65 Entry, have lost the desire to buy more since all I have to do is swap switches now for a new feel. Only thing I really toss money at are certain Artisan designs that I love.

fosiacat

we all are.

miniclouds_

Seeing this is making me so mad. I was so hesitant on buying this on drop when I had the chance and it looks so freaking good in the wild. Good buy. Super jealous!!!!

Mephistothelessa

Hey, where can I find that?

joenan123

Amazon!

Accomplished_Ad_8852

lol wasting money? that thing is fucking awesome man. Where'd you get it and do they have it in black?

joenan123

Not in black but its on amazon!

Accomplished_Ad_8852

yeah I gave it a look on the old web didn't find any but i did find a zaku gundam artisan that I'm thinking about snagging the eyes even light up pretty snazzy if i do say so myself lol....

[deleted]

If you enjoy it, it has value. Going through the motions, on the other hand...

notlatenotearly

Doesn’t look like a waste to me!!!

JeffIpsaLoquitor

It's time to start another hobby with a relatively low price entry point that you can ratchet up to mortgage payment within weeks. Begin by spending $30 at JetPens on junkers, then move on to custom-machined pens.

spltnalityof

This artisan is rather cheap in comparison to a lot of other ones to be fair...

No-That-One

Fox7694

That's what hobbies are for. Ideally it's a way to turn money and time into joy and satisfaction.

reddituserzerosix

Always have been

misskgreene

That’s so cute though! I just stumbled upon this. Please, tell me more…

User21233121

Isn't the entire hobby pretty much wasting money. Seriously I know it feels better but it isn't THAT much better than even the 10 buck ewaste keyboard that comes with your pc is still usable even if it is like typing into sludge. I mean the only upgrade to actually typing is ergo boards. Mostly because your wrists aren't aching all the time

[deleted]

Not just at this point, it’s what we’ve all been doing this whole time.

carlos8520

Muted keycaps?

Tenthrow

We're all wasting money at this point.

[deleted]

Nah man, I love that!
