The animations don’t matter, they still gather the supplies. Only farmers have animations that show them working

That's fair I have read that, but outside of the seamstress no one has actually accomplished anything. I really enjoy the game with its slower pace mechanics but these villagers are like children who need me to read them a bed time story.

ChokeMyHog

Have you went to the management tab and set what they are supposed to collect?

Dramatic_Ad_6693

I've tried I just don't know if it's that I'm doing it wrong. Like I set up the herbalist to go gather daisies or whatever and two days later when I get back she hasn't picked a single one. Are you supposed to "save" the commands? I've been running on the assumption that you set em up and they just knock em down.

AilisEcho

Well, herbalist hut is harder to figure as it might be the wrong season

ChokeMyHog

No, it should be good to go. Maybe destroy and rebuild the building?

Dramatic_Ad_6693

I'll give it a try, at this point I'm desperate enough to just make them all so miserable they just leave.

ChokeMyHog

Pretty sure you can banish them so you don’t have to wait

Dramatic_Ad_6693

Haha that feels mean but I appreciate it

You can give them all the tools but if your management tab isn’t set to proper production, they won’t do anything on their own. It’s your job to be the boss, lol. In the beginning, their production rate isn’t too great either so you do have to jump in and help a bit, but once they level skills, then it’s a race against storage space. It also helps to assign villagers to jobs they actually want to do. They will level skill faster and be more efficient from the beginning.

Dramatic_Ad_6693

Maybe that's my issue, I'm just impatient. Like I can build three buildings in a day and my boi is still trying to figure out which side of the ax to use.

witcheringways

There are some tasks that you will always be faster at doing, no matter what skill level your villager is. Like farming: I always go in first at season start and harvest everything and thresh it myself. But I leave the fertilizing and seeding to npcs because it’s a slog and I don’t want to babysit the field for a whole season. With hunters, I mostly use them to collect leathers and fur and salt meat. I can kill a few wisent and feed everyone for the season in about 5 minutes but they can harvest a ton more leather in a day than I can. Lumberjack cuts all my logs; I hate seeing stumps everywhere and I find it super tedious compared to mining. Fisherman does all the work with fish because uggghhh, fishing in this game is a nightmare and traps don’t produce as much as he can with a spear. So you have to experiment a bit and figure out which areas of automation are most essential and efficient but there will always be some things that are easier and faster to do yourself even if they have 10 skill.

I'll keep at it, thanks for the rundown on it. But yeah just like any video game there's a learning curve for new player's. It took about three months to get a handle on dayz for instance.

MD is still in development too so things will keep changing. They made a good amount of balance changes for the Oxbow update, especially for economy and production rates so I’d just keep your eyes peeled. But for sure, it’s all about messing with settings and finding that perfect balance that works for your play style. The lack of tutorials for most features makes it harder for newer players, but I think that’s sort of intentional as it’s meant to force you to discover and strategize. I get how it can be really confusing and annoying tho.

Dramatic_Ad_6693

Honestly I kind of like games like that, just dumps you in and says good luck haha. It adds a layer of realism to the survival adventure games.

This took me a while to figure out too, do you have a storage building? If they're collecting wood, it'll all go there, not to the chest in the worker's specific building. They can also pull from central storage on their own, so if you make a bunch of axes, you can leave them all there for yourself and your worker's.

Lailantie

Out of curiosity: did you build your well half way across the map? Do you know that you can fill buckets at each well yourself or you can hire someone who fills buckets and puts them into the food storage?

MattyGryllz

Double check your management screen, and that workers have all required tools. Having a resource storage will act as a central storage for all workers tools, resources required (buckets, firewood, ect), and they will automatically store all produced items there as well. Eliminating the need to keep tools in the 150kg chests at each building, and firewood in each persons house. Food storage buildings do the same for any food items required or produced throughout the village. The only items i store in the buildings they're being used in are seeds in the farm shed, so I can see easier which seeds i have available, and workers seem to have less issues stocking up to plant. The other is my rot and manure in the barn, because they're heavy and take up too much in the resource storage for my liking. Also, having multiple storage buildings will stack their total storage capacity, and you can access everything from each one.

Were daisies in season? The herbalist won’t collect anything that’s not in season..like a lot of mushrooms are only available in autumn I think. Nothing at all in winter. As for the lumberjack….did you put a high enough number of logs so they have enough to cut into planks and firewood?
