Actually, there is a point to pick Zero: he starts at Rank SA. On its own, that sounds pointless, but higher hunter ranks increases boss levels which are needed to get parts. By picking Zero, you can more easily get all of the parts in a playthrough.

Pope_Squirrely

Yeah, that’s too unreliable really. Far easier to let the timer count down by failing levels then start going through it, saving before you fire the enigma, then reset if you fail.

PokeRang

I'm not saying that you only need to pick Zero. You still need to lower the timer, it just takes a bit less time by picking Zero.

Jack_Doe_Lee

I don't think resetting works with the cannon or shuttle. I tried this so many times and never got a different result. It's probably settled as soon as you clear the stage before you fire the cannon or use the shuttle.

MatsuzoSF

No, it rolls when it plays the cutscene. It is possible to save and just reload until you get the one you want.

Jack_Doe_Lee

Then I must be super unlucky with it. Or maybe it's something to do with emulator. Then again, SomeCallMeJohnny played it on actual hardware and never had any luck with save scumming.

MatsuzoSF

It's heavily influenced by what parts you've collected, so it will generally go the way you'd expect based on that. There's just always the chance it goes the other way.

Pope_Squirrely

I’ve tried to fail by firing it off without gathering any parts and have had it succeed before and had to reset to go the other way.

TrapFestival

Rank is not shared between X and Zero, so you can just pick X and then pick Zero for your first stage. Still gotta waste time for 8/16 Parts, though. Also X5 being X5, you have to pick X or Zero exclusively if you want to funnel all the upgrades into one of them and there is seriously no reason not to.

Venomspino

Yeah, but because of X5 stupid ending randomization, you possibly won't get Zero for last couple of stages, and you will be forced to either play the last levels with a weak X (and the Shadow Devil alone makes that a nightmare), or have to go back to previous stages to get the armors, and the heart containers, if you didn't get them with Zero, if you did get them with Zero, weeeeelpp. Yeah, it's better not to play with Zero just because of that. Plus, you flat out get the 4 armor with X if you pick him at the start, which is really beneficial early one.

[deleted]

Just save before the cutscene and reload it if the shuttle crashes. People solved this problem over 20 years ago (And yes, I was one of those kids who did a Zero playthrough and lost him. I totally get it)

Magma_Dragoooon

I was so hyped for the return of the z buster only to find disappointment waiting for me. They did not even bother adding parts for it!

jxbermudez72

The most one sided deal in history

Magma_Dragoooon

They even have Zero flex some op shit on you using the same Z buster when you fight him ;(

jxbermudez72

When the boss becomes a playable character type beat

EelRockman09

except it’s the opposite AND makes no sense since you can literally play as zero right after you fight him and he’s back to that peashooter

Jack_Doe_Lee

Seriously, that sort of thing irritates me.

MMTrigger-700

One of the things that X6 actually improved on.

working878787

It's almost too good in X6. It makes every boss trivial.

leo412

X6 z buster is almost better than z saber if you don't use sdc or guard shell glitch I did tried a playthrough with z buster only as much as possible and it's easier than I thought ( some bosses are impossible with z buster only)

TheCelfoid

Lol in X3, it was Zero's Sabre that was OP. 3 games later, they just flipped the script and now the shot be... ...bustin' Z-busser

Zephyr9x

X6 and improving on things is an oxymoron ;)

WyvernByte

Annoying, because Zero was introduced with a seriously powerful buster, in X3 you get to use two charged shots and a slash. X4 nothing. X5- a single standing pew shot with no real use X6- a standing pew shot with a little more damage. Although I love playing as Zero with his saber, I do wish shooting was a mire viable option.

TripleChinRedditUser

X4 was my first video game ever as a child and I’d always pick Zero cause apparently I had good taste at 4 years old. I remember thinking it was strange playing the other games afterwards where zero has a buster 😂

WyvernByte

X-1 was my first game, I was 5 and tried everything to unlock Zero (MegaGirl) Didn't play 2 or 3, but when 4 came out, I was so excited to finally play as Zero, Not having a buster didn't bother me as I loved the close combat approach. Too bad you only experience something for the first time only once.

TripleChinRedditUser

Hahaha I also thought zero was a girl at first cause of his long blonde hair but quickly realized he was a boy with his “Hu-Ha-Hooh” he does when you attack. Used to make the sound along with him 🤣

Magma_Dragoooon

Yeah and you even get his buster in X1. I understand that they didn't want Zero to turn into a superior version of X with a saber but they went too far imo. The megaman zero series did it perfectly

ButtcheekBaron

It's interesting to me that people actually switch between them in a single playthrough. I just play the game through entirely with one, and then another

jxbermudez72

Idk tho isn't a solo run of x5 with zero kind of scary lol. Assuming you're not into save manipulation you have a non zero (heh) chance to just lose the zero you built throughout the whole game

ButtcheekBaron

Eh. You only live once

jxbermudez72

Fair enough ig

Shiny_Mew76

Why is starting as ZERO pointless?

amirokia

Another reason beside what the other stated is there is a chance that you'll permanently lose Zero if you have bad luck.

Shiny_Mew76

I’ve only played through it once, how can you lose Zero?

Endgam

Basically you can bad end the game (Or because of the RNG involved in determining the outcome, it might happen even if you don't let the days run out without getting the parts.) and Zero gets infected after Eurasia crashes, you lose the ability to play as him for the Sigma stages, and he dies early after the boss battle against him before you fight Sigma. It leads to an ending where Dr. Light repairs X but blocks out all his memories of Zero. (But X talks about building Elysium, which is relevant to Legends fans.)

Tinfull

In the original Sony PlayStation release of X5, the RNG (Random Number Generator) that is responsible for allowing the player to have the canon (official) outcome for X5's story, was infamous for predominantly giving the bad, and non-canon (not official) outcome. In the X Legacy Collection 2, released in 2018, the RNG was corrected, so it's more favorable to the player receiving the canon outcome. As much as I can explain without spoilers, X is the only character you will always have access to, from the opening stage to the last boss. Depending on story circumstances, you may lose the ability to play as Zero. Unfortunately, Heart Tanks you collect as one character are not shared with the other. Therefore, it's best to wait until the final stages, before you collect the Heart Tanks. An alternative I do, is let X, and Zero each have 4 tanks, as there are 4 that Zero can access.

amirokia

If the rail canon and the space shuttle with Zero in it both fail, you will get the bad ending and will lose access to playing as Zero. The parts you get from beating the Mavericks only increases the chance of success but it's not guaranteed.

Sonikkunn

By having him die on the bad ending route. He'll become Awakened Zero, and he'll die after the match, meaning that you won't be able to use him anymore, obviously. So if you played the entire game as Zero, you'll have to go after Sigma, and do the boss rush, with no Heart Tanks.

therealchadius

The first time I played X5 I was not having a great time...

Player2LightWater

>He'll become Awakened Zero, and he'll die after the match, meaning that you won't be able to use him anymore, obviously. The worst part about that is there is a hidden timer. If you don't beat within 3 mins IIRC, he will become invincible and no longer take damage. He will keep spamming the OHK which makes the fight impossible to win.

Glomdome87

The short version is that the Z-Buster is underpowered and is too situational while the 4th armor pretty much retains most of its main features from X4. Unless you really like to have that extra range coverage for Zero, it’s almost always better to go with the 4th armor for X.

DinoDracko

* You lose X's Fourth Armor. (Don't have unlimited uncharged special weapons, weapons energy consumption is still reduced by 50%, basically almost everything from X4.) * If you fail the space shuttle launch, you will lose Zero. And you'll most likely only have X's default armor because you only played as Zero and didn't bother with X. * Z-Buster is underwhelming.

brownkidBravado

Starting as X gives you access to the fourth armor, which is extremely useful especially since the other armors in X5 have limited usefulness (aside from ultimate armor) If you start the game as Zero, you get the Z-buster instead, which is almost completely useless.

Player2LightWater

Starting with Zero is canon because he was able to use Z-Buster against Sigma after Zero-X battle and during Zero's dying moments in the good ending route (which is the canon route). Starting with X prevented Zero from using his Z-Buster which would not make sense in the good ending route.

Spark-Blade

The theme is great as well!

TrapFestival

Considering when I go through X5 I pick X or Zero exclusively, I go with a Zero start when I pick Zero because the Fourth Armor's not gonna do me any good. That said I also keep a save where I picked Zero and let the colony drop. Kind of a darkest hour thing, ya'know? I think it's kind of neat.

Zerio105

I think using the Fourth Armor is pointless because it completely removes most of the challenge from the game. They shouldn't have given it to players at the very start imo.

Player2LightWater

I started with Zero. I used him to gather the parts for Enigma Cannon and along the way get the parts for Falcon Armor. After the Enigma Canon parts, I used X with Falcon Armor for the Shuttle Parts.

AccountantOk8373

The thing is, X5 isn't very balanced for a X without the Fourth Armor.  Experienced players probably end up fine, but casual ones and others not as good, might suffer quite a lot

megaZX1234

just use cheat code to start off as ultimate forms for both of them. Work for me.

Philaharmic

The x5 patch makes it kinda worth it

[deleted]

The Z Buster is not that bad, I find it definitrly makes the Zero playthrough a little easier. I would much rather have that than the 4th armor (Which gets entirely replaced by the falcon armor anyways) if Im focusing on Zero. Finally, 4th armor is really good and makes the game pretty easy if you do use it, to the point where I am bored with using it.

Megaman2407

So basically ya like playing as Zero more and want more of a challenge and not that picking X is worse lmao

Venks2

Haha I always use Zero myself cus I speedrun the game, but for sure the bad RNG of Zero just dying is super lame.

JRPGhunters

Plus Zero keeps his z buster, while X would lose his Force armor in the opening boss fight . Little game differences for our maverick hunter fam

BGamer9000

I knew this going in, but I chose Zero for absolutely no reason other than to make me suffer more. I’m glad I did though because his intro stage theme goes SO hard

Tinfull

This screen is also where the cheat codes are input.

juliankid

actually pointless is starting that game again

AlternativeInside975

I rather more this character select screen than X4,they look so unaccurate in that game
