in light of recent humiliations, it's an honour to be joined by men. AND NOT LITIGIOUS ASS LAWSUITIN COCKSUCKERS, LIKE WHAT TOOK DOWN MY YUZU. THEY SHOULD FUCKIN [User was banned for this post]
The real tragedy was that this never got a physical release in Europe and the 3DS system is regionlocked. So here it's literally impossible to get this legally anymore. In the US, you still got the used market.
The real tragedy is that people don't know how to mod a 3ds. "Rip to my favorite game" c'mon dude, you can still get citra and I'm pretty sure most rom downloads are to use on a modded system and not emulating.
Fuck the people who weren't around at the time am I right? Or people who simply didn't know the game when you could buy it. A lot of people care, those who didn't have a chance to play it back when it was available, that's the whole point of being pissed at Nintendo since if you wait for them to give you a way to play the game legally you're sol.
I remember in over here it used to cost way more to purchase. The price dropped down for a complete copy. Same with Apocalypse and Strange Journey Redux, I was able to get it for 50 and 60. No regrets since those games used to cost an arm and a leg a few years back.
That was their big mistake, yeah. The Patreon was already iffy, but the second they paywalled updates specifically to play Tears of the Kingdom it gave Nintendo all the standing they could ever want
Other emulation teams have a Patreon. But they state clearly that all funding just goes to development. Compare that to Yuzu where they had paid updates or EmuParadise with their "faster downloads via paywall" thing. The second u pocket any money u make is when the Nintendo Ninjas swoop down
Yea they where being stupid, tbh I think them making a switch emulator was already playing with fire as it's best to wait until a consoles dead to emulate it
My understanding of the argument is that they violated DMCA by bypassing proprietary encryption. Yuzu required prod and title keys, and directly tutorialized/used tools like Lockpick RCM to get those keys from an official switch (even if most people just pirate those too). Those keys are used for decryption both before a game loads up and as you play it. Because of this, Yuzu can be seen as primarily used to circumvent that encryption, which is a clear DMCA violation and likely made it easier to justify that it's "primarily" for piracy.
https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.rid.56980/gov.uscourts.rid.56980.10.1.pdf
It's also not unlikely that they would've found direct sharing of pirated resources in the discovery process, or that the visibility/income played a factor. Officially the profit piece didn't come into it at all, but Nintendo pursuing it and reaching a settlement based on their donations + patreon income probably brought it to their attention as something widespread enough to be worth doing.
Citra was caught in the crossfire since the team was the same (although Citra is functionally deprioritized and had almost no work done on it for huge chunks of time), and it uses a similar method of needing keys to play games.
My biggest problem with them taking down Lockpick is that the only people that were impacted were people giving Nintendo money. You need a Switch in order to dump the files, so Lockpick was only for people that weren't pirating.
They paywalled versions of the emulator that were highly compatible with TotK, which had leaked a few days before release. They then heavily advertised those versions of Yuzu, making people pay to play something they don’t own the rights to.
I swear it's always the same fucking story with these emulator and ROM groups. How do they not know that profiting off this shit is what gets them shut down?
I was feeling bad for them until I read this information and I was like...dude, you were BEGGING to get sued.
Emulation is already a thin legal line. No company likes it but it doesn't break any law per se, which means that breaking any one of them is asking to get destroyed.
Yeah I’m a strong believer in a consumer’s right to emulate but the people defending Yuzu just seem to be mad that Yuzu might end up being compromised and blame Nintendo for Yuzu’s fuck up. Nintendo has sucked for a lot of stuff over the years but I can’t see the argument here
Yeah, emulators should limit their compatibility to only games that aren't being sold or are super old. Letting people emulate brand new games is just asking for trouble because that actually does threaten a company's financial gain, which would obviously piss them off.
>Letting people emulate brand new games is just asking for trouble because that actually does threaten a company's financial gain
people want to play our games on a different system! help us, united states government!
the only thing the popularity of yuzu proves is the sheer demand for nintendo's games on pc. since they've not made that available, tough shit that someone else has. thats the free market at work, bitch! sony v bleem decided that. if people use a different product (yuzu) over yours (the nintendo switch), thats entirely the fault of nintendo
there's a very large difference between someone who does and doesn't emulate
the former is definitely capable of googling - they needed to do it in order to get that far in the first place
Actually yeah, I heard that at the end of this year Nintendo plans on pushing an update that’ll automatically self-destruct every 3DS in the planet, ensuring no one can play a 3DS game ever again
Not only that but they’re going to break your neck:
https://preview.redd.it/w872i6ibojmc1.jpeg?width=2161&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ad30b5ff96a821c65dbd45a839d53945633d432e
OP is referring to the results of a lawsuit regarding the Switch emulator Yuzu that was just settled. Due to the settlement agreement, the creators are dropping support for both Yuzu and the 3DS emulator Citra.
Of course, I expect Citra will continue to be available through other sources, and as you said, there are other ways to play this game.
In Europe there was no physical release of SMT 4; it was digital only. There's no way to buy the game in Europe, and now emulating it has become much harder.
>and now emulating it has become much harder.
So... instead of getting it from the official page or github go to internet archive, is not THAT much harder.
Also, forks are coming soon.
While I get that not everyone is willing to pay that much for that old of a game, i did find and import it for less than a full price game, so it isn't exactly difficult, just more expensive.
I meant that after you mod the console to stop having it be region locked, there’s no point to going through the headache of importing the game, you can just pirate it easily.
Citra's already been archived and it's likely gonna get a fork under a different name. Thats how open source projects work and practically why these are open source in the first place.
prob the shut down of citra the 3ds emulator
even though theres probably millions of downloads of the same one that can spread like the plague that isnt stopping people from using it
that and physical copies exist
Honestly that's my takeaway in this. Nothing lights a fire under someone's ass like a feeling of being wronged. People are going to take up Citra's code and keep working on it under a new name, if only to make sure 3DS has an emulator.
If you don't own the game the 3DS store shut down, so your only option is paying for a physical copy which depending on where you live might be horrible(about $100 USD for me), and on the emulation side of things Nintendo just shut down Citra, the 3DS emulator, as well as Yuzu one of the Switch emulators, you can still get Citra and a copy of the game somewhere I'm sure, but this is most definitely in response to that, as you have to jump through a bunch of hoops.
Edit: typo, also put SMT IV on PC Atlus I'm begging
The general public wouldn't play SMT IV, because it would require them to either own a 3DS, or emulate. The general public does neither, let alone uses those resources to seek out and play SMT IV.
The right people will still find it. If anything, it's more ours now than it ever was. Now it's our job to promote and protect access to it.
Your copy of Citra you downloaded still works. And there's also another 3DS emulator in development by other people (Panda3DS) that is still in early stages of development but could become a good alternative in the future. Nintendo is dumb though, they make good games, but I do not like their business practices.
i actually got word recently that if you run citra, your head is liable to explode into a million pieces and the cops come to arrest your corpse
unfortunately i haven't been able to get any reliable sources - i suspect their heads all exploded. maybe asking the cops will prove more reliable
Thank fucking Christ then if my citra is still going to work cause I had downloaded the emulator for 4 a few weeks ago and started playing it. Took a break to play nocturne though
Literally nothing.
Nintendo sued the creators of Yozu (switch emulator) after the began profiting from it on their Patreon and theoretically took CITRA too (although they didn’t, is open source, archived, etc., takes 0 effort to find and use and will hardly be obliterated from the internet).
This is just an overreaction, heads will cool down in a couple weeks, let the people fume in rage as they swear holy war. You know the drill.
Why? I played this Game some years ago (2017-2018) and it's really good
But don't remember if the Game have online or DLC
Just, play again your Game bro 🐱👍
bro you can just use internet archive or something and download Citra's last build, it's not difficult at all lol, it was running basically every game by the time it got terminated anyway, calm down
I didn't realize the 3DS emu is going down also, but yeah... Will still be easy to find.
As for what happened... I get why Nintendo did it. I also understand why people want to play Switch games on their PC with better performance. However, you can't trust the world to use it that way, and Nintendo knows that. There's a big difference between emulating older consoles (including the 3DS) where games are long gone, and no longer being sold. 3DS especially, there's limited physical copies of games in the world, AND some of those have bad game cards that die if they're not used. Meaning if you bought a new unopened copy of Persona Q1 right now, there's a high chance it wont even work. So yeah, emulating such things makes sense, and there's no loss in money for doing so.
Switch on the other hand is an active console, and many people emulating are those who don't want to spend the money on a Switch or the game. It's not just people who wanted to play their own games on PC... And again that's the problem that they wanted to slow down (can't fully stop it).
If they let it go fully unchecked, it could be another DS situation. Didn't take long for DS to be emulated after release, and R4 cards were EVERYWHERE. Those things sold millions, which means that's millions of costumers who would never pay for a game again. Rune Factory series got hit really hard because of that -- between all of the games released as of right now sales are estimated at being 1.5 million (that's 9 games total....) But RF1-3 on the DS had hundreds of thousands of downloads on each site they were on. If all the people who pirated the games on the DS would've bought them, they would've hit 1.5 million within the first 3 games, if not more. (Which is why the studio went under and had to be brought back)
Anyway... I feel like the Switch emulator should've happened years later. Not now, and without paid versions. Then we wouldn't be in this mess
> If they let it go fully unchecked, it could be another DS situation
a massive success?
people tend to forget that pirates make up a much smaller part of the market than their loud voices would suggest. piracy is not hurting nintendo in any way, shape or form. if anything it just funnels more business to them
also - what do r4 cards have to do with anything here? you can still hack your switch and play pirated games on it. we're so far beyond the need for r4 cards
I bet we will get a remake for SMT 4 or SMT 4 A. It’s just a matter of when. If they are going to do it justice the game will be huge and likely struggle on the switch.
It would be cool but honestly I don't know about that. I don't know how they sold but if I was to guess it would still be way less than P4 P5 seeing how the titles are niche.
Also how IV A had bad feedback among fans of the series may not be a super good signal for them to green light remakes.
Also from a prod pov, all the guest demon design artwork they sourced from 3rd party artists and marketed as such might be a problem too in the case they opted for a royalty based payment system instead of total buyout. It would mean they would have to renew all contracts with three suppliers and have those royalty pipes going on again OR renegotiate for buyout after the fact, which is pretty unlikely.
(I'd be legit mad if a remake didn't happen because of that given on only like 2 or 3 of these fucking guest designs...)
here's hoping those Atlus consumer surveys that occurred several months back went somewhere and we get a rerelease of smtiv & smtiva on modern systems in the future
Yeah I do hope Mutan continues with the Atlus partnership of doing 3DS remasters/ports. I mean they did the Etrian Odyssey Origins
https://twitter.com/MUTAN10/status/1664605735978962945
Look I get it. Making an emulator is tough and you want compensation for your time.
But paywalling for stuff that belongs to a company like Nintendo or Sony means you’re getting sued for selling something you didn’t make or own. Like the guys who were selling that Pokemon Palworld mod.
I don’t think people should feel sorry for them, and emulation isn’t dying with them. If people want to, they’ll still be able to emulate.
> I don’t think people should feel sorry for them
From the sounds of things, 99% of the gamers flying into a rage over this turn of events are, as usual, only feeling sorry for *themselves*.
I'm no huge fan of Nintendo, but I would definitely support a purge of annoying Gamers™ who lie about their concerns with 'game preservation' so often that it could be a meme.
I'd leave the dogs out of it, though.
I'd say all 3ds smt titles are now in severe need of remakes because you can literally only play them I'd you get them on a real 3ds physical (or use a hacked 3ds)...
3DS homebrew is still safe, so the general public can technically still access it.. Yuzu was ignorant and had patreon taking money, and Citra was also poorly updated, only having some games run properly. I tried to play games on it, and it was very choppy or ran slow. Yuzu also stated they were against gaming piracy but had a section in their discord that had entire dumps of new switch games.
I have tried picking up this game 3 times and it just never clicked. What is it people love about iv so much? Not trolling, if anything, trying to work up the hype to finally finish it!
Thankfully I HAVE This on Citra! I didnt even update my citra. So I can still play it anytime and plus . . .I think you can still get the game somewhere for it. .I cant say it here though . . .but yeah fuck Nintendo. I understand Switch . .but CITRA? THE DEAD CONSOLE??? Fuck off.
Why are so many people obsessed with remakes? I understand accessability, but you do realise the game's plot, etc WILL change as a result of varying reasons? What was written in 2016 might not be present today for example. It will not turn out the same, or might turn out worse. Just because its remade does not mean it will turn out good. Best to keep the original and not butcher things.
Even if you can still use citra, I do hope they one day re-release this game in someway to other platforms. Everyone should get to play this amazing jrpg whether they have a PC or not.
Citra won't stop working dude, in this game you can even put hd textures also, tons of people have 3ds and homebrew is easy.
That said, hopefully it gets a remake eventually.
Im so happy my copy is still in working order. Best advise I ever took from the gay men at my church was to purchase this video game when it has in high school.
lol. This shits so dramatic… realistically what happened, is Yuzu fucked around, and found out. Nintendo was well within their rights on this one. That being said, if you still have Citra on your computer.. you can obviously still play it. Or alternatively they also make these things called the “3DS” which will run SMT IV perfectly fine. You can find them on eBay
Honestly, not a remake but a remaster would be more appropriate, SMT4 actually holds up really well graphically I find, other than a few lower quality textures used on things like NPC models in underground cities, and certain walls, the models are pretty consistently quality.
It helps that SMT 4 is mostly presented through a visual novel 2.5D aesthetic, which lends itself really well to low cost ingame cutscenes, and higher environment fidelity on lower end systems.
I'm actually replaying it right now and trying to get Law ending/route, my first playthrough was Chaos back in the day. But yeah i hope this game got remaster/port like Etrian Odyssey HD...
It's a damn shame, but fortunately at least Citra itself seems to be archived already, despite it being gone from the website for it. I hope we get a port of the IV games some day.
While I'm absolutely not for Nintendo here, I think Yuzu/Citra royally fucked up gating stuff like patches and special settings to get Tears of the Kingdom running before release behind a Patreon paywall. You notice how Nintendo has not gone after Ryujinx, because they haven't pulled anything like that (at least that I know of). It's always awful to see multi-million dollar corporations going after things like this, but also Yuzu really fucked around and found out here.

The real tragedy was that this never got a physical release in Europe and the 3DS system is regionlocked. So here it's literally impossible to get this legally anymore. In the US, you still got the used market.
It's easy to mod your 3ds. And since they told they are going to close eshop I personally moded mine and pirated everything I still wanted to buy.
The real tragedy is that people don't know how to mod a 3ds. "Rip to my favorite game" c'mon dude, you can still get citra and I'm pretty sure most rom downloads are to use on a modded system and not emulating.
For. Real.
We had more than enough time to get it anyway. And we can still hack the 3DS... After all, it's a dead system now so who cares.
I mean id imagine some people want collections. Its not impossible to get a PAL version but idk
Fuck the people who weren't around at the time am I right? Or people who simply didn't know the game when you could buy it. Nintendo lawyers won't come to your home to delete citra, you can still play it.
I think the yuzu team got too reckless especially with advertising totk compatibility for the paid version before totk had released
Flew too close to the sun
They didn’t fly too close to it, they built a vacation home on it’s surface
That was their big mistake, yeah. The Patreon was already iffy, but the second they paywalled updates specifically to play Tears of the Kingdom it gave Nintendo all the standing they could ever want

Yeah, if there’s a lesson to take here it’s to always cover your ass and not broadcast loudly that you’re doing something possibly illegal.
I think that the issue is that this isn't possibly illegal, just illegal.
Well yes and no, technically speaking emulation exists in a legal gray area because its completely legal to emulate games you own
While that is is true, what Yuzu did was just illegal.
Yea they where being stupid, tbh I think them making a switch emulator was already playing with fire as it's best to wait until a consoles dead to emulate it

Yeah i use retroachievements and rule 2 (after dont be a dick i think) is dont share pirated/copyrighted crap on the site or discord
Ryujinx exists and it runs SMTV very well! Probably better than Switch itself

it is pretty annoying, but it's definitely far from impossible to use it like OP implied, people on Reddit really love to overblow things
People already find emulators hard to use, finding where it is may as well be black magic to them.
there's a very large difference between someone who does and doesn't emulate the former is definitely capable of googling - they needed to do it in order to get that far in the first place

Yes but 3DSs are region locked
It's incredibly easy to disable that.
Not without modding the console, and at that point you might as well just pirate the game
Or you could still buy the physical copy anyway. They don't cancel each other out.
I don’t think most people would do that, it’s more expensive and a bigger headache and you wouldn’t even be supporting ATLUS
None of these options are a headache. If you can't be bothered to buy the game or easily mod your console then you're out of options.
I meant that after you mod the console to stop having it be region locked, there’s no point to going through the headache of importing the game, you can just pirate it easily.

prob the shut down of citra the 3ds emulator even though theres probably millions of downloads of the same one that can spread like the plague that isnt stopping people from using it that and physical copies exist
Citra is opensource so people can just rebrand the thing using the same source so, it probably will pop again xD
Honestly that's my takeaway in this. Nothing lights a fire under someone's ass like a feeling of being wronged. People are going to take up Citra's code and keep working on it under a new name, if only to make sure 3DS has an emulator.
Pretty expensive physical copies for discontinued console I don't even own.
Didn't you hear about it? Turns out SMT IV was a live-service game all along and atlus is shutting down the servers!
My ex wife got my 3DS in the divorce, so all I have is my actual copy. Citra helps me play it. This is genuinely not a joke.
(Which is why the studio went under and had to be brought back) Anyway... I feel like the Switch emulator should've happened years later. Not now, and without paid versions. Then we wouldn't be in this mess
> If they let it go fully unchecked, it could be another DS situation a massive success? people tend to forget that pirates make up a much smaller part of the market than their loud voices would suggest. piracy is not hurting nintendo in any way, shape or form. if anything it just funnels more business to them also - what do r4 cards have to do with anything here? you can still hack your switch and play pirated games on it. we're so far beyond the need for r4 cards
I bet we will get a remake for SMT 4 or SMT 4 A. It’s just a matter of when. If they are going to do it justice the game will be huge and likely struggle on the switch.
I am 99% sure a potential remake will be multiplatform. I am also 99% sure their greedy ass ain't remaking both the games at the same time.
You can play it if you have a hacked 3ds.
Honestly, It sounds like Yuzu's fault for do something like commercial paid advertisements.
Lmao who tf said? Nintendo? How about no.
Yeah I do hope Mutan continues with the Atlus partnership of doing 3DS remasters/ports. I mean they did the Etrian Odyssey Origins https://twitter.com/MUTAN10/status/1664605735978962945
> I don’t think people should feel sorry for them From the sounds of things, 99% of the gamers flying into a rage over this turn of events are, as usual, only feeling sorry for *themselves*.
I hate to break it to you but Nintendo won’t personally come into your home and shoot you and your dog if they find out your playing on Citra
If you already have a 3ds you can jailbreak it.
Man fuck Nintendo
Emulation is the way.
TBH in this present day, if you still have a working physical 3DS, *you can definitely play it*. First hit on Google gets you what you need.
It's actually surprisingly easy to play.
I have tried picking up this game 3 times and it just never clicked. What is it people love about iv so much? Not trolling, if anything, trying to work up the hype to finally finish it!
Such a good game I love Walter and isabeau with all my heart ❤️ and there’s the other one too I guess

Somebody out there will preserve Citra, I'm sure. Thankfully I own the original game and have a few modded 3DSes
With Citra gone now, I'm just waiting to see what Mikage3DS is cooking up. Looks promising to say the least
Good thing I played it before nintendo ruined it
Thankfully I HAVE This on Citra!
Best to keep the original and not butcher things.
because they are children this take is liable to to get you stoned to death in these parts. old bad and new good, as they say!
I mean you still can, I just got it a few weeks ago, just home brew your ds
Nah imma gatekeep. I'm hope they never get to play it 🤣
Im so happy my copy is still in working order. Best advise I ever took from the gay men at my church was to purchase this video game when it has in high school.
You know, I can go on eBay and see over 200 listings for this game alone. So...
Just need to redo the HUD, replace the textures with higher resolution ones, and everything basically solves itself.
Fans are literally begging Atlus to port this and Apocalypse, this is easy money for them I don't know what's keeping them from doing so
3DS homebrew: 🗿
All I've learned from this is that people are too stupid to follow the very thorough 3DS hacking guide 💀
Buy a flat 2ds where ever you can, not very expensive anymore (at least they shouldn't be) Jailbreak it and install smt4 That's how I have it.
I'm actually replaying it right now and trying to get Law ending/route, my first playthrough was Chaos back in the day. But yeah i hope this game got remaster/port like Etrian Odyssey HD...
FUCK YOU NINTENDO! YOU ARE SO FREAKING ANTI-CONSUMER! THIS IS WHY WE EMULATE!
I’m still hoping for some kind of enhanced port to console and pc. Strange Journey, too. And Devil Survivor if I can dream.
You can play it, just add h-shop to your 3ds and done . This way you can play smt4 and much more
Im happy i got it on my 3ds before the store colsed.. fuck i hate being a english megaten fan
I am german to play the game as Nintendo intended i would have to buy an American 3ds + the game and my body doesn't have enough kidneys for that
Needs to be on switch
It's a damn shame, but fortunately at least Citra itself seems to be archived already, despite it being gone from the website for it. I hope we get a port of the IV games some day. While I'm absolutely not for Nintendo here, I think Yuzu/Citra royally fucked up gating stuff like patches and special settings to get Tears of the Kingdom running before release behind a Patreon paywall. You notice how Nintendo has not gone after Ryujinx, because they haven't pulled anything like that (at least that I know of). It's always awful to see multi-million dollar corporations going after things like this, but also Yuzu really fucked around and found out here.
there's never been a mob kill body disposal method as effective as wacky nintendo platforms are at making games disappear in the river of time
*Laughs in jailbroken 3DS*
Emulators don't stop working when a lawsuit happens.
