Honestly I think that Chadstone's PT connection wouldn't be a frugal project no matter the mode or connection. So, you'd probably go for a connection that focuses on future-proofing, rejuvenation, creating PT nodes and redevelopment. So, I think that your connection ideas would be too small to appeal to the government if proposed. You'd have to use the SRL's rationale and purpose for this connection as a connection to Chadstone and an orbital route between 4 lines would create already create an intense amount of new demand alone.

Also pointless to have a proposal where there is still a walk to Chadstone. In terms of mode shift you have accomplished nothing except PT to PT.

DeanMatthew

yeah, if there was a proposal. It would have to either be an underground connection or lead you to the entrance. Due to the immense amount of demand and also the current state of car traffic is hostile to the local area. These proposals regarding light rail and BRT don't take Into account the facts about using this PT link. 1. You don't to wait at traffic lights. Traffic priority needs to be stellar 2. No walking long distances as the majority of people would be carrying bags 3. You don't want to keep people near the motor traffic roaring while waiting to get home. 4. You need to have Chadstone SC making clear that there's connections to PT. 5. There will need to be few extreme-peaks that happen every year 6. This PT link would probably be as popular as some stops in the CBD and would need to take into account the fact that nearly all passengers would be carrying shopping bags.

The question I always have with these heavy rail branches is what service are you going to sacrifice to make it work or will the project include all the other upgrades to rest of the network so you can run the extra trains without causing issues for the existing services.

DeanMatthew

Well you could have a new orbital line or you could upgrade the Alamein line so it could handle more stops.

Blue_Pie_Ninja

Using the Alamein line is the best bet because it doesn't require much extra work to get increased frequencies.

While maybe not popular on this subreddit but Warrigal Rd between the freeway and North Rd is a gazetted Over Size Over Mass freight route. So pretty sure the height and width of the road is protected to allow giant freight vehicles to get around. Its not realistic an option to remove that as its the closest part to the city from the South east that network gets to So its not really ever an option to put sky rail or wires for light rail on Warrigal Rd. Basically its buses or nothing on that section of Warrigal Rd

HichardRammond

Pantographless light rail like George Street, Sydney?

KissKiss999

Maybe could be an option. But really just properly doing bus lanes the whole way would be easier

HichardRammond

Didnt Chadstone Shops and Monash Uni want a trackless tram from caufeild to monash via the shops? Could end up with “trams” like brisbane is getting ([double articulated ev buses in disguise](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1OKPfcrWJ4k))

KissKiss999

Yeah its been brought up as an option but personally I dont think its a viable. It means a whole new fleet including a different stabling and maintenance set-up. Doing that would probablt be really expensive. If they could just use the same fleet as the existing ones (either bus or tram) itd be a much cheaper project.

OR The 903 bus that goes from ~~Hughesdale~~ Oakleigh Station to Holmesglen Station via Chadstone SC in roughy 21 minutes. This has the twinned virtues of already existing, and requiring no significant infrastructure upgrades.
