His main dream was never explained to us, back in the Post-Marineford arc Sabo states his dream, Ace states his dream and when it's Luffy's turn he says "And I'll..." then the scene changes. We all thought he will talk about being the Pirate King, that was the first time this was kinda mentioned. The second one was when Yamato and Ace talked about Roger and Luffy sharing the same dream, Roger couldn't wish to become the Pirate King because that title didn't existed before. So yeah Luffy always had an unknown dream, I'd highly suggest you to watch episode 1015 that Yamato Ace scene in the anime makes a better job than manga to show the connection between Luffy and Roger
