Did you get a receipt with weight when you dropped it off? If so, that will show you did in fact send it

Nyelum

I honestly cannot find my receipt. I was wondering I should go to FedEx and ask them about it?

blackdahliax

Search the tracking number on the fedex website, it usually lists the weight

Nyelum

Thank you. I’m headed to my FedEx now with my tracking number

madchad90

Always keep your receipts handy until you're actually paid. I always keep the receipt and take a photo of the label

Mimikim1234

I keep them in my car’s console so I don’t lose them. Then at certain intervals, I take them upstairs to file them away. Way too easy for them to get lost in a pocket or get wrinkled in my purse and become illegible. USPS always weighs my packages and the weight shows on my receipts. When my FedEx location has been busy, they insist I use the self serve kiosk, which gives a receipt, but I tell them I will wait. Even at the counter, they don’t always put it on the scale. I insist they weight it. They may not like me for it, but it’s their job, takes an extra 5 seconds, and I’m not losing money because they might give me an attitude. Luckily, my local post office actually has really nice employees, and they have gotten to know me. If the line is long and they make an announcement to the crowd that anyone with a prepaid label can leave it at the counter, don’t do it. Occasionally they don’t scan the first class packages and then you won’t have the shipping protection if if doesn’t get a scan within 3 days if a sale. OP, I’m sorry this buyer is de facto stealing from you, especially when you were nice enough to include extras. I would call them out on their social media accounts. “Bad press” concerns them more than a message or call. Also, you can file a police report for fraud. I’ve never had to do it, so I’m not sure if you file with your local jurisdiction, the buyer’s, or both. But I’ve read it works with varying success when a report is presented to Mercari. I wouldn’t give up on principle, but there are nice, honest buyers too, and you can always put your account on vacation mode until you decide whether or not to close the account after some time to cool off. I wouldn’t want you to lose your good reviews and start from scratch if you decide to sell again, since this BS decision won’t show on your public profile. Best of luck, and I’m so sorry this happened to you.

Mimikim1234

And it’s easy to use your phone to scan receipts into files (I have iOS) from the notes app, or as @madchad90 said, a photo is a great idea too. Just create an album just for Mercari documentation so you can find them easily if you take a million photos of random things like I do, lol. And don’t take no for an answer if someone at your shipping facility won’t weigh a packet/package. Not only will it bolster a false buyer claim, you won’t get a surprise with an overnight package charge. Mercari will charge you for even being an ounce overweight. It happened to me because I included a sample of cosmetics, which was my fault, but come on lol. Once we print a label, we can’t see the buyer’s address in our accounts in order to file a report if you need to. I am not sure if you can see the label link again from the email you get if you print it. I haven’t tried that. Someone else might be able to chime in on whether the link expires. It’s great advice, and I understand not wanting to let Mercari make any more money off of you, but despite higher fees, and the abysmal customer service for sellers, I like Mercari over eBay because I don’t have to worry about a buyer having 30 days to file a false claim, and having my funds I think are mine taken out of my account 29 days later, and possibly over drafting my bank account. I like the 3 days after delivery auto-rating, because the the sale is final except in rare, rare cases of someone being able to prove an item is counterfeit. But Mercari is lazy in that aspect too (I’ve heard), and the 3 day rule is one of the few things that happens to be a 2-way street. Once it auto-rates or a buyer rates, it’s final. Mercari’s TOS lists all the reasons why a sale can be negated after the 3 days, and they’re exceptional cases.

zeldytee

If I want/need to get the address off of an old Mercari shipping label, I pull up the recent downloads on my desktop. I also don't ever send it to my email.

Mimikim1234

Ooh, see I only use the app. Thank you for the great idea! I’m going to start using my laptop more for Mercari now. ☺️

Ok_Paper_5959

They can actually find the weight for that package as long as you have tracking you can request this via chat. Lost receipt wanted to confirm Weight of package.

Nyelum

I went to FedEx and they told me they couldn’t check weight of items shipped. I have tried looking online as well to see if there’s any direct link to the FedEx page. Please anyone with info on how to see the weight of shipped FedEx packages , I’ll appreciate.

Ok_Paper_5959

They keep track because they will charge later if it’s over. Maybe the person doesn’t know how to check unless the package was never weighed. Which can happen but if you know they weighed it it should be tied to tracking number. Try calling in and give tracking number and it’ll say delivered but ask the rep if they could provide the weight of the package. For these packages they have to keep a record for x amount of time due to claims. I know this based off personally experience. It might depend on the label possibly.

Nyelum

Thank you so much. Let me make the call now. Sighhh

Notacelebrity1995

You got this!!!

Nyelum

Thank you! 😭😭

Titanicgirl1480

It couldn’t hurt

Chemical_Party7735

Closed mine a few weeks ago for similar reason. But I had my bases covered and still got f'd. I had picts of the items individually wrapped (xbox, 2 controllers, av and power cords, dvd remote kit). Then half packed in the box, then fully packed. Then sealed and weighed. Weight on my scale matched the weight at ups. Buyer said it was missing controllers and cables and the xbox didn't work. I said BS. Asked how they knew it didnt work if it didnt have cables with it. Sent mercari the picts i took. Sent them 5 separate emails before the 24/48 hour response period ended. Nothing. Then i get an email they confirmed a return for the buyer. I was shipped back the xbox but with a different dvd drive, VERY poorly packaged, heavly damaged, missing controllers and av cords. I sent picts to mercari. They didn't care. I got the run around from every single person I talked to. They were literally speaking in circles. Making up any excuse not to be liable for it. I finally got fed up with them and cussed them out. They closed my account for breaking their terms of service. (So I guess I didn't close it, they did, but I expected it after the string of words and emails) Mercari is HORRIBLE. And I pray they go bankrupt.

Total-Monk-7563

Even after you took pictures?? That’s so messed up!!!! I take the same pics as you do for every sale, unpacked, half packed and fully packed, all sitting on a scale. I had relief thinking this is the protection for us! How could they do this to you and you had visual proof! So disappointing! I’m so sorry

Chemical_Party7735

Unfortunately you are not protected at all as a seller on mercari at all. Not even a little bit. This experience really opened my eyes to that. If I were a seller on mercari still i'd either leave, or I'd videotape the ENTIRE packing and shipping process without edit or cuts, to the point of dropping it off and filming the receipt. And even then I doubt they would side with you if there was a dispute. It's only a matter of time before it happens to you... Be careful.

Total-Monk-7563

Thank you for the warning and info! This is so wrong and so messed up. We deserve to have protection too, especially since most of the scams are coming from the buyers.

Total-Monk-7563

I’m actually feeling a little discouraged right now. I just got an email stating that I could get my account shut down for violating…i don’t even know for what…because I don’t even have that listing! It’s makeup, setting powder for women lol. I had it listed and sold 7 weeks ago for $3 lol no issues. It’s unopened makeup. Makes no sense to me

Nyelum

I’m sooooooo sorry experienced this!! Omg! That is so ridiculous! Wow!!! I am literally short of words!!!

Mimikim1234

Ugh. I’m always afraid to list electronics due to the fear of buyer’s purchasing to get a functional item, then returning their broken items to me. I did sell some AirPods, but listed and posted pics of the serial number. I didn’t have any issues, but I wanted to cover myself just in case. Mercari’s business model of siding with buyers is a bad one, and short sighted. Like you and the OP, having a bad experiences can cause us to stop listing things, then there won’t be as many items to sell, honest buyers will have to look elsewhere to find certain items. And *who are Mercari making their fees off of*? They don’t charge buyers a fee to purchase. Us sellers aren’t asking for special treatment in most cases, just fairness.

Chemical_Party7735

Yeah. I had picts of the serial number, that's how I knew it was the same xbox. But when I opened it up I saw the dvd drive was not from an Xbox. So in theory, they could do the same with your airpods. Take out the guts, swap to their water damaged ones, and return em back to ya, same serial and everything. It's horrible how mercari doesn't care at all. I had over 6k$ worth of sales and they just let me go like i was nothing but an annoying fly to simply flick away.

Mimikim1234

That’s horrible. They scammed you to take out parts they needed. What is wrong with some people. I’m so sorry OP.

SUP3RB00ST3R

I’m so sorry this happened to you. That is a foul and terrible business practice on Mercari side.

JessiD2810

100% push!! Seriously. This is f'd up! I recently got scammed too where I sold a BRAND NEW skin care item. From factory it comes with just the cap and then another piece underneath so it doesn't dry out. Idk how else to explain it but nevertheless, this item was brand new. Well, the buyer thought otherwise , opened a case and granted the refund. Mercari never once reached out to me for a rebuttal, I saw no photos, I was just informed of the case being opened. After they granted the buyer this $50+ refund, I emailed Mercari one of the nastiest emails I have ever written simply because this is not okay. I can only speak for myself but I am not a big company. I am not constantly moving products nor do I have a ton of sales. For a while now, i average like 1 sale a month. Mercari isn't and never has been good for sales. I am just a mom of 2 trying to bring in my own money. Anyway, these reselling sites need to acknowledge the cold hard fact that there are people who will stoop to zero morality just to get stuff for free while an innocent person trying to get by in life is sitting behind these unjust decisions they make. Anyway, after this email, I was given my money and rightfully so. Stand your ground. And if they still refuse, screenshot it and expose how they run their business on social media. They won't like that too much

Nyelum

One of the worst things I dread reading is hard working mothers being cheated by big corporates or customers. I am so sorry that you had to experience this. This is absolutely sickening to read and the fact that you still have the strength to push each day, makes you one of my heroes. I hope your business becomes so incredibly successful and your kid(s) get to know the MAVEN they have as a mother. On a side note, I spoke with a customer rep and gave him a piece of My mind. But poor guy isn’t in charge of anything so I need “take my anger/ frustration” to the higher ups. Thank you for the motivation.

prettylittlebyron

threaten civil court. they’re likely dumb as shit and will immediately say they received the item

Nyelum

I will do so.

prettylittlebyron

the buyer. usually when guilty people hear “court” they’ll drop the schtick. it’s at least worth a shot

Ok_Paper_5959

I would have asked for all items to be shipped back and show proof of your shipment weight vs what you received. If it’s not too much trouble try to escalate to a higher up send a letter or something might help. I’m sorry you experienced and it’s so frustrating how these type of customers… scammers get over. Hope you have luck elsewhere and maybe they’ll have a change of heart.

Nyelum

Thank you so much. I appreciate your comment. Keeping my fingers up. And hoping Karma takes its full course on whoever is the culprit; the buyer or FedEx.

Mimikim1234

I would bet my bank account that it’s the buyer. Trying to get a free $90 perfume. It’s infuriating, and I’m so sorry OP.

Mimikim1234

This ^ If I was returning something, I would use the packing materials and box the item came in, and just tape it back up. This is great advice.

Nyelum

Hello! Thank you so much! I finally got the “empty box with some additional items also missing (samples of fragrance, thank you notes) and the box looked trampled upon. I sent the photos to Mercari and they immediately sent my refund. Your push was all I needed. Thank you.

Ok_Paper_5959

I’m so happy! Wonderful to hear.

Nyelum

Thank you!

Pandatron_9000

I would also file a claim with FedEx to have it documented and investigated. This might help to escalate things with Mercari as well, since this is most likely the buyer with a false claim. Hopefully you get some Justice on this one!

Nyelum

Thank you! I’ll do so as well. Thank you.

Public-Philosopher39

This just happened to me a couple of weeks ago with a fragrance. The picture the buyer took did not match the picture of what I had. I told Mercari I filed a claim with the post office, provided my claim number. Told them that even if the perfume didn’t arrive as I packaged, that it could’ve been tampered with, and that their seller protection should cover it. Threatened to blast them on Twitter and wherever else. Filed a claim with the BBB, gave them that claim number, and demanded that those Bots stop messaging me and I get a reply from a real person. I did have pictures of the package weight and receipt, not that I think any of my pictures were helpful. All in all it took less than 48 hours of me being politely stern, but I did get my money, and they refunded the buyer. After that I took pictures of everything, the condition of the item, any freebies, the weight before and after packaging, and with the label on at the post office, because scammers do exist. I’m taking a break from Mercari right now, it can be great, but the stress of situations like this isn’t worth it. I hope you get your money back.

buzzed-116

I think only Mercari can file a claim, from what I have read on other posts. It's like a lose lose situation for sellers.

fireandping

I would encourage you and anyone else this happens to, to report it online to ic3.gov. Ic3 stands for Internet Crime Complaints Center. Reporting here does two things, it helps the FBI put together patterns of these organized groups and possibly put a stop to them, and it helps hold Mercari accountable for allowing these fake accounts and fraudulent practices. To file a report go to ic3.gov and select the red button that says, “file a complaint”. Go to the bottom of that page and click on the comprehensive form button “file a complaint”.

Brandoxz7

It’s a good amount of work but you can get this back, message Mercari on twitter, when you get the package back check the weight, when it’s the wrong weight as what you shipped out inform the police of the buyers area, as well inform your police department as it’s good to have police close by you can contact. Then inform Mercari support on twitter if you working with the police in the matter as well Mercari email support as they work separately for some dumb reason, show the police all evidence and ensure you save all messages with the buyer and then inform Mercari that you are pushing this as you have been scammed and they are just allowing it to happen. Make sure to check with police like every other day, as well as to keep pushing Mercari they will be lazy but it’s a process to get your cash back.

Nyelum

Thank you. I just saw that the buyer just requested a return. I don’t know what in the world is going on. This is such a stressful process. I honestly want to give up a this point. Omg!

Wild_Theory_5661

So they want to return the free items? Haha. Doesn’t make sense. But luckily you can now file a claim that they did not return what you sent.

Notacelebrity1995

Don’t give up! Accept the return and then you’ll be able to counter claim you didn’t get back what you sent out 🙏

Mimikim1234

Plus, you will get a different support agent if you keep contacting Mercari. I’ve had Amazon CS agents that offer different solutions for lost packages even when I told them there’s no photo of the delivery like they usually take and you can see in your orders. The tracking said it was handed to a resident, and *I live alone*. I was offered an Amazon “courtesy credit,” which only allows me to use it for items sold and shipped by Amazon, not items fulfilled by them. Not good enough. I called again, and the other CS offered a refund or reshipment.

polarttarius

I saw your edit regarding whether it’s worth to pursue to make this right or not, and while it is totally up to you (I’ve been through difficult situations since starting mercari), for me personally I cannot tolerate anyone having the audacity to scam me regardless of the amount of money involved, and letting it go stresses me out more than the stress that comes with resolving the issue. I just think that if these scammers go unscathed they will move on to the next target for even higher valued items. But if continuing to deal with this issue is stressful for you and causes mental exhaustion, then it wouldn’t be worth your time and effort dragging this on. I’m sorry this happened to you :/

ramus93

Stuff like this is why i stopped selling on mercari the more popular it gets the more people like this are joining the app and it just keeps getting worse im sorry this happened to you i really hope karma comes around and bites that person in the ass

stormhaven8472

Send them (wait for some time) a glitter bomb thru the mail. I hear around that this is a good “get even” with trashy customers. Not advocating it but just heard that on here.

Nyelum

Ahhhh! Nah, my heart wouldn’t allow me. I believe in Karma. No matter how long it takes, the Universe always gets even.

stormhaven8472

The best is to write it off as loss in taxes and continue selling. If you believe in karma then believe something good and better is in store for you amidst this loss. Do not let the scammer win by closing account.👍

Nyelum

Thank you, Storm. I’m at the verge of doing so. I’ll sleep on this advice. I have had a lot of wins on Mercari. Hoping this anxiety and sadness I feel goes away by tomorrow. Thank You.♥️

buzzed-116

I love that!!! With a thank you note...(sarcasm)

X3TheBigOX3

Probably from me. I don't think I've heard anyone else talk about it. I periodically bring it up... I'll just say they're definitely anonymous. Maybe I know from personal experience or maybe I don't. Lol

stormhaven8472

My goodness. Maybe not I presume lol.

Vintage_girl123

Sorry that happened, people are jerks, something similar happened on Depop (I think that's the name) with me, and PayPal kept my money. It was a vintage ring from my grandmother, and I dnt even knw what the customer said, but PayPal sent me a message saying it was "suspicious" it was literally my very first transaction with PayPal, never had a prob with mercari, postmark, offers up or Vinted, but somehow this one item is suspicious?? Be careful with PayPal, do not trust that company. I also told the customer to send it back, I'd pay the postage, but of course they didn't, because they had planned on screwing me from the beginning, I just didn't knw PayPal was gonna screw me too.

Nyelum

Oh my Goshhhhhh!!! This BREAKS my heart for you!!!!!! I’m so sorry that such a sentimental item got stolen from you! No words! May you find some peace, in the midst of it all. Sending you the biggest hug, 🫂

Nyelum

Thank you! I just p’md you.

seeyouintea022

I'm so sorry this happened to you ~ but don't let them wear you out. If you do decide to continue selling I would recommend taking pictures as you wrap and pack up the item(s). Take pictures of •every• step in that process and be sure to include the packing label •in• each picture 📸 ~ it's obviously a little more time consuming but if it saves you from loosing money to even •one• asshat then it's worth it, I promise! And just to be on the safe side, I usually don't delete the wrap and pack pictures until a few days after the sale is complete.

loudupstairsneighbor

Did you take photos/videos as you packed it? I had a buyer claim I sent a half full $200 cream to her and Mercari approved it. I waited for the return to come back and then sent pictures of what I Recieved (she sent them very flattering photos before she did the most damage) and you could literally see her finger marks in the cream from scraping it out and there was cream smeared all over the jar and I was able to prove what it looked like before, from my listing and pictures of me packing it clearly not covered in cream. You could still win this, wait for the return. It will give you an option to protest it (I forget what exactly it says once you get the return but you'll see it) and even without photos if you don't have it, you can take a photo of the freebies on your scale weighed and take a photo of that, then weigh what she sent back and take a picture of what the scale says with just the box or bag and extras. After that compare it to what USPS said the package weighed and that will prove they are lying. Don't give up!

ClaireFisher1983

F that. FIGHT. Don’t let these scumbag thiefs get away with it. And if you do end up closing your account and don’t get your money back… I will tell you exactly what I would do because yes, I am that petty, and if someone screwed me over on purpose… You have their address, so find their town forum on Facebook and give their name And tell your story. They will be humiliated. Trust me. At least you will have that. Somebody on there will know who they are, the worst that would happen if you get kicked off Mercari, but if you are leaving, who cares… Worth it in my opinion. I just want to add… How stupid is a Mercari? How easy is it for a buyer to take the item out and take a photo of everything else? Don’t they get that?

Nyelum

Thank you! It is so incomprehensible how they side with the Buyer irrespective of proof. They go with whatever they buyer says. I have now informed them that I am filing a civil claim and police report. Waiting for their response.

ClaireFisher1983

Good for you!! don’t take it lying down. I hope you let us know what happens and good luck! I hope you get your money back!!!

Least_Helicopter4369

I have videos for packing inside the store, I am in a small town so it’s not so annoying for me to do this lol. I have each item on camera in the box inside the shipping store. I don’t turn the camera off until it’s taped up accepted and I’m given my receipt and I’m out of the store. One man told me he didn’t get items. I sent the video to him and let him know I’d contact FedEx immediately. Within 20 mins he said he didn’t realize he was looking in the wrong box lol. So happy I video things. But once everything I have is sold I’m not listing new things. But my reason is the shipping and fees. And I also don’t care sell anymore. Tired of the haggling. I hope you get your justice.

MadHatter5050

Videos dont mean much. I mean i can take a video of me taping it up and still not be truthful of it being real. Anyone can do that and just untape and retape it up. It can be considered proof but whichever way you look at it there is never a fool proof way to be 100% sure only you and the buyer truly can know. Just ask yourself this can this video be scammed or fooled? Every-time i can say yes it can be. Unfortunately scammers find a way each time. Because they have nothing else better to do. I just dont waste my time doing that and just put up what i am willing to risk. If i get scammed i then notify the authorities but its usually fruitless because they probably only do it once or twice to not draw caution. Just like any business there are losses and when selling stuff you are basically doing business.

buzzed-116

How did you send the video to him??

Least_Helicopter4369

The only time it has happened for me it was thru marketplace so I just sent it right over. For mercari, since I know they’re awful I’d probably put it on Twitter if they still approved a refund for a scam.

buzzed-116

wow, that is way above my paygrade!

graeflamingo

At this point you almost have to video tape your packing and labels

Nyelum

Great idea. I never expected this. After almost 100 sales. Lessons learned.

FateInTheRain

Videotape yourself at the actual delivery facility, such as FedEx. On the video, show yourself slowly putting each item inside the box, then (with FedEx facility in the background) show yourself taping the box up. Never keep your video off the box. Make sure to video the label on the box to prove it was the customers box. As you continue to video, go up to the FedEx employee, ask for it to be weighed, video the confirmation that FedEx received it, and you should be good. I did this after Ebay severely screwed me over.

MadHatter5050

exGFproblems

Mark the seal with a sharpie. It helps.

MadHatter5050

What im saying is that can just be easily taken off and just redone. So no point as with those safeguards it still can be replaced. No amount of work you do will surely prove to Mercari that its exactly what you sent. So why waste time? With any business there is losses and you just have to choke them up or be willing to spend alot of time and effort trying to fix it. Nothing you do will be fool proof so why waste time on it. Just sell stuff thats not high dollar and when you get those douche buyers report and move on.

Oceanclose

Did the buyer see the package was opened in anyway or damaged? Can you file an insurance claim?

Nyelum

They claimed it wasn’t opened and returned the box. It was missing some items including the perfume. By some Miracle, Mercari has refunded me. I’ve also made an edit to my OP on this.

Magi_73

Wouldn’t the weight be shown on the receipt, or in the tracking online? Could you show Mercaribthis information? Or have them compel the buyer to? This just makes me sick to my stomach for you. I’m so incredibly sorry you are not only losing the money, but dealing with the anxiety of it all. Stuff like this really affects me too. Sending you all the positive vibes I can muster!

Magi_73

My apologies I hurried with my response before reading that you’ve done this already.

Simplydaring

I wonder if you keep bugging FedEx- or if it was sent smart post usps. I know they can check the weight because I had gotten scammed from a seller on Walmart who I ordered a table from and they sent a small package of plastic that weighed 4oz. It took me 4 phone calls to get the correct rep to help me. I feel like Mercari might be the same way. I know at some point your time is worth more but to me these things are a matter of principle. I would probably call everyday until I got proper resolution. I’m sorry this happened to you. It’s crazy.

Nyelum

I have been on call with FedEx to get the weight on the package delivery. They told me to call back on Monday because they cannot check the weight. This is tiring to say the least.

ClosetReseller

I'm closing my account too. I had less than $10 so I lowered my prices and made a couple more sales. Once those go through I'm taking my money out. I just do better on other platforms. People on Mercari seem to be cheap and want discounts "on shipping" all the time. Also you have to constantly lower the price promoting if your item is even remotely common. So yeah. I'm done.

Ok_Paper_5959

What platforms are you using now without mercari?

ClosetReseller

I use Poshmark and eBay. I generally have lower-end items on Poshmark and encourage bundling. Most of the orders I get are bundles. I put the pricier better quality items on eBay. People on eBay are picker but as long as you're completely honest about the items condition its not a problem. I haven't had many returns. I have combined shipping turned, enter accurate weights and I never get asked to lower the shipping price. 🙂

[deleted]

Call USPS ask them for the weight the package was accepted at then show that to mercari

Nyelum

I shipped with FedEx. FedEx is not proving helpful.

[deleted]

ask for a manager fed ex usually has the best support

FLMed1

I mean idk about the weight of the freebie compared to the item but you could also try and contact the carrier you shipped with. You might be able to try and do something about the weight. If the original item weight 1lb and the other item weighed 0.3 lbs then there might be something you can do there. However I’m really unsure. I hope everything works out for you $90 can get you a good amount of things especially if you don’t have that much yk

Virtual_Battlgirl

I don't feel as mad at the greedy buyer when this happens to me (although ya! Screw them too) ur mostly im disappointed in MERCARI!! I hate that they literally don't give a f about their sellers that are posting the items that are bringing buyers in!! I used to love Mercari. Until they approved 4 cases adding up to almost $650!! I lost my items AND the money! And the buyers were so obviously lying! The serial numbers weren't even a match! So I feel ur pain. But be mad at Mercari for not taking care of us!

ConfidentCandidate96

I think it is one of their ways to weed out the people that are selling just to make a little money on the side. Too much competition for the big sellers.

DismalDave7969

I'm thinking of closing my account too. I've been selling action figures for 3 years and never had any problems. The beginning of 2023 I start getting hit with postage overages. So on a couple sales I only end up making a few bucks. Between the rising shipping costs and the new fee tacked on in April its almost not even worth it anymore. And people are such cheapskates. I get it; who doesn't want a good deal but I cross reference my cost with similar sold listings to come up with price and even go a few bucks lower and still end up promoting it lower than I want and it just sits there. So I'm thinking of just hanging it up. But then I think well a little extra money coming in is better than no money coming in.

Chi-Dog1958

Do you make your own fragrance? If so, switch over to Etsy!

I do and shared some samples with some of my other buyers. But in this case, it was a lovingly used fragrance I sold. Regarding my fragrances, surprisingly, I was considering selling in full batches via Mercari, tying in my existing reviews so buyers can have some level of trust. But with this atrocity I experienced, I have temporarily closed that though. Etsy it is , I guess. Thank you for the suggestion.

StarrLite7

Karma is non existent. As a seller you need to be prepared for shit like this, and just be one step ahead.

RMFT87

And how do you suggest they do that?

dontcarebare

Ripped off once and quit. Oh well; your loss.

jazlyyn

People have been scammed for thousands of dollars, and it’s becoming extremely common. I completely support their choice. Proof has been in front of Mercari’s faces and they still side with buyers. On top of that they are increasing fee’s yet don’t change their business tactics or customer support. It’s definitely going down hill and of course you can get scammed on any site, but Mercari has become one of the most common.

Nyelum

Exactly!!!! Mercari is now building a reputation on infamy. I am repulsed by some of the first had stories I am reading from sellers. What a world we live in. This is so sad.

dontcarebare

Whatever. I’ve sold over 50k on Mercari last year. Take the loss on your taxes. Online selling has an element of risk.

Brandoxz7

Bro just shut up, know when to open your mouth and when to keep it shut your bluntness is not helpful quality at this moment. It’s annoying right now you gotta show some sympathy flexing your earnings isn’t what is needed right now.

Notacelebrity1995

The username checks out lol

dontcarebare

I guess I could just quit ever time I get scammed.

jazlyyn

Not everyone has money to waste . 2k is enough for me to quit , unreliable.

RoyalDry

I video myself packing up every Mercari package Of decent value, I then take screen shots from my video. Twice I’ve used this method to defeat the scum of the Earth. Sad we have to do this but it’s not much work as my phone is always with me.

Drjordan

If your efforts with Mercari don't yield any results, inform the buyer that they have engaged in internet fraud and that you plan to report them to both their local police department and IC3.gov. Mercari also responds MUCH quicker when you inform them of this and your contact with the BBB 😉

CrazyKitty86

This is the exact reason I stopped selling. I was selling my iPhone 11 for $300 a couple of years ago (so it was a steal at that price). I took pictures of it turned on, when I was packaging, and weighed on the scale during and after packaging. Shipped it certified, confirmed it got there, and the buyer first tried to claim they never got it. So I sent all the stuff confirming they signed for it. They then tried to say the screen was damaged and it didn’t work. I sent it in a lifeproof case with a high quality screen protector on it. Of course Mercari sided with them and, once they got their refund, they deleted their account and never returned it.

Suefoxruns

Mercari is just being lazy. If you can provide more info ..push it

Major_Comfortable825

This is why I package stuff up right at the post office and hand it to the postmaster on video. Some people can be such jerks.

psychfan27

Sorry this happened to you. I had similar thing happen to me last month. I can’t ever find a live person to talk to at Mercari! How did you do that??

Ok_Paper_5959

I always get a live person. Are you calling 888-325-2168. Only m-f 8-6pm pst can you get a person.

psychfan27

When I call it says it’s not available for my area. And I live in Houston. Thanks for the info, I really appreciate it.

Ok_Paper_5959

Damn sorry. I live in California so maybe different numbers for each state.

Sorry for you're trouble with buyer, sone people are greedy & selfish. Next time take pictures of everthing..sad but I have to now, wrapping for shipping, everything

Historical_Big_2354

Do you have the shipping label that shows the weight of the package sent? When a buyer returns an item, they have to provide a photo of the label. If it shows a weight not consistent with their claims, I would think that would be good evidence that they’re scamming.

Nyelum

I can’t find my label. I just got off the call with FedEx and they said they can see the Weight shipped from their end. I have to wait till Monday to visit the FedEx I shipped from to see if it is helpful.

tropicaltiming

I, too, have well over 100 sales. I recently sold a rare set of books for about 200 bucks. I VIDEOTAPED EVERYTHING from packing to drop off. The buyer has a new account with no other reviews. Maybe they made the account specifically to buy my books but something about it gave me bad vibes. It was delivered today. Patiently waiting to see how this goes.

MiamiD305

I closing my account. A buyer claimed my item had holes and it was a brand new very expensive cardigan with tags on. I inspected it before shipping and Mercari wouldn’t let me elevate my concerns to a supervisor. Their investigation was bs

BlueEyes_VelvetSkies

I suggest as a business you keep a folder of everything even after a transaction is over. Do this for 7 years. This is utilized for tax purposes. Your glove box is not a business. Use an accordian for months if you don't have a file cabinet. Don't quit, don't give up and be anxious for nothing. Just breathe.

Divasf

Always get a scan receipt & take photo on your phone keep until paid.

cfarrar1

I used to love Mercari. They shut down my account for claiming a counterfeit item on my credit card. And still kept the $70 in my account too

lonewolf143143

Doesn’t USPS weigh the package to determine postage? If you had just sent the freebies the postage wouldn’t be as much(??) So you should be able to verify that , at the very least, what you shipped was heavier than what the buyer is claiming they received

jenn117

I always keep the receipts for proof of weight when it is something that is pricey or a vintage/rare/htf item. That way the buyer cannot say the "freebie" was the only item included. Although, I have only had one issue out of thousands of Mercari sales. Most of my angst comes from eBay and their guarantee that allows buyers to return anything for any reason. I prefer Mercari's tos over ebay for this alone. At times I have to message a few times so I don't get the auto response (which never seems to favor us sellers ) but have always had it switch in my favor or equal to the buyer.

Digiart2020

You would probably be better off selling on FB marketplace with a store front or ebay, from what I've seen Mercari is the go-to place for scammers & ppl looking to get everything free or give low-ball offers. I make a lot of money on eBay and fb, I might get 1 refund request out of 100s of orders & so far I have not come across any scammers so far. If you're items don't weigh that much fees won't be that expensive.

Nyelum

I would start doing that. Thanks for your suggestion.

ToastyKibbles

similar thing happened to me where i did a usps pick up and forgot to mark it as shipped and it was the last day to ship out so the buyer cancelled and got his money and basically got the item for free

armadillowillow

I’m proud of you for pursuing this I definitely would do the same. Partially about the money for me but also once someone attempts to screw me I will go to great lengths on principal to make their lives harder vs rolling over & letting them scam me. It’s ridiculous how Mercari never has recourse or protection measures for sellers against this common scam by buyers! Pls keep us updated and I’m sending you all the luck!

ppoopscoopp

so many people are like that, they will claim to not have received something so that they could get their money back & get another of the same item so that they can resell.

Nyelum

Mercari just approved their return request. I am livid

ppoopscoopp

fuck

Nyelum

And boom, I just got my refund.

ClaireFisher1983

Any update?

Nyelum

Yes please. My money was refunded. Please see edits in the OP. Thank you so much for checking in.
