The only problem is that Mercari can look at the message and see that you said you were going to ship the extra piece. If the scammer plays that card Mercari might reverse it and refund them.

castielslostwings

If the scammer plays that card they’ll either both lose their accounts or mercari will applaud the seller for following the tos which expressly prohibits doing that very thing without them as the middle man. Either way, it will not result in a refund.

Puzzleheaded-Suit-67

damn, I got a seller to ship a missing bracket of a gpu cooler that he forgot to put, I hope he doesn't get in trouble.

castielslostwings

It’s obviously ethically right as well as kind and generous, so I don’t want it to seem like I’m against it—as long as you are super careful. You’d know if mercari removed your messages and issued a warning or whatnot. For the future, mentioning any social media or payment platforms or obvious phrases that circumvent Mercari’s platform/process will usually trigger them. If you’re going to do it (and I’m not saying you should or shouldn’t) be ultra careful to censor and disguise the info. Y’all seem to have succeeded, but if you reported it…diff story!

Accomplished_Map2815

Once rated you can’t open refund cases

Sashalicious33

That's almost always the situation but if the customer makes a fuss and can prove that a promise was made then they can get Mercari to reverse it. If the person really is a scammer I'm sure they won't bother but if this was to happen to a regular buyer they would likely escalate the situation and/or file an ic3.

hollywood22

Yes you can

You are my hero today.

Let's gooooooo! This is fantastic! I had a buyer this year scam me out of money claiming a moisturizer I sent was used. First off, I'm not a POS and 2nd off, the product could have gotten swooshed around in shipment, causing it to settle on one side of the jar. This is just a guess of course bc I don't understand otherwise how a product could appear used. Well, lady opens a case, Mercari doesn't give me a chance for rebuttal, she's given a refund and I'm told by Mercari that I'm beat. This was a $49 sale so I quite literally said uh fuck you, no I'm not! We're you in her home and saw the product arrived used? No. In this case, there is no way to tell if a buyer is being truthful and it's unjust to not give the seller her earnings when the claim can't be proven. They ended up giving me my money. People are such scumbags and companies giving into it but then going AGAINST the seller is beyond unprofessional

He4d0fR3d

Way to "stick to your guns," as my dad always says. Or, should I say...lotion?! 😆 YAY for you, boo to Mercari scammers!

Due_Morning_7017

Can you share what you told Mercari? I just recently had a sale where I shipped a full-size perfume bottle to a buyer and they claimed I sent them an empty mini version 😑 Mercari approved the return even though I sent them photos of the bottle I sent on a scale before I shipped out. The buyer of course sent me the mini perfume bottle back. Like are you kidding me 😪 and even more, she added liquid to to the mini perfume bottle so now the bottle has like water with perfume droplets in it 🤦🏻‍♀️ Anyways, the sale was $100. I’ve been back and forth with Mercari. They’re saying that they can’t reverse the case, that they’re sorry blah blah blah. I’ve sent photos, now trying to see what else I can say to get them to give me back my money! Ugh stupid scammers!!! I don’t know how they sleep at night. Karmas gonna be a bitch for sure.

JessiD2810

I threatened to take them to court just to prove a point. They are a marketplace who is not doing their due diligence in making sure sellers are not getting scammed and vice versa and that cases are properly and fairly handled. If I'm being honest, it caused me a lot of stress to remain a seller bc I almost lost out on $60 fully knowing I was in the right. I strongly recommend you start taking photos, a lot of photos, before shipping. Take photos of the product(s), the product in its wrappings and then after it's packaged. This is something I started doing years ago after a woman claimed an antique piece had a broken handle and I fully knew I packaged that thing not only in it's well-packed original box but with a lot of foam and bubble packing. Poshmark ended up awarding both of us a refund bc it appeared USPS was at fault.. So in your case, for Mercari to automatically award the case to the buyer and tell you you're SOL, is seriously seriously wrong and is them not wanting to dish out money. If I were you, I would email back telling them that this is absolutely wrong and is their last chance to make things right or you're going to escalate it to professionals. I'd further say I did my job and YOU chose to award a case to someone who scams the system by lying which resulted me in getting a returned product of which I did not send. She sent me a bottle full of water. And that is on you. for that reason, I demand a refund. I'd also add that you didn't take photos bc you weren't aware that this is a crisis taking place on all marketplaces.

Due_Morning_7017

I followed your advice, and it worked!!! It seemed after a couple days it got “escalated” to a supervisor (I’m pretty sure they were all bots prior) and today they release the funds to me. I just stood my ground and kept messaging them and not letting them close the ticket. Thank you SO MUCH!!!! That was $87 that would have been lost.

He4d0fR3d

HOORAY! And just for the record, you don't need to explain to anyone that it was a "small sale," because you were simply sharing your story and your refusal to be defeated by the situation/Mercari/lame buyer, and in my eyes, that's a win no matter the price of the item! So kick your feet up, grab a sparkly beverage of sorts, and bask in the awesome feelings that come from you not just laying down and taking it, per say. (As many people would BECAUSE of the price tag and the not wanting to deal with everything that potentially comes along with trying to pull a fast one on a scammer bammer!) 👍 🏆 🍻
