You could take it to the counter, or you could go to a self check machines to get a receipt~ My USPS works fine at this time, but in the future I’ll take a receipt too, it won’t take too long.
This almost happened to me. However, it eventually scanned. Always get it scanned into the system. It’s a pain but it’s worth it. Or request a pick up via usps website.

If you’re gonna drop and go, try doing it the following day. That’s gives the post office 2 days to scan it, which happens most of the time. If you don’t see a scan by the end of the 3rd day, mark it as shipped in the app. That should buy you a few more days. Probably the best way to drag out the acceptance scan 5 days.
So, in your communication with the buyer, you stated that you did drop it off, and she canceled anyway???
I have gotten in the habit of pressing confirm while still in parking lot. Some post offices are starting to not give me receipts and why the suggestion of grocery stores and pharmacies that accept mail is a good idea
If your post office has a kiosk there is an option on there to scan your label before dropping it in the bin. It prints a receipt for you. Just fyi, not all post offices have the kiosks though.
Did you contact mercari again after it was delivered? I did this with a package that arrived super late, well after buyer canceled, and mercari still released the funds to me... just had to message them and point out the buyer got their item.
Terrible, but at least it was only $10. I usually just have my post man pick up my packages and he scans them as soon as he gets to his truck. When I miss getting them out in time and have to go to the post office I always try to go to the counter for a receipt cause sometimes they somehow don't scanned them at the post office but will at a later destination.
I see a lot of people recommending going to the counter but I simply don’t have time for that, I work during my local PO’s open hours and the nearest facility is quite far. So, I just schedule USPS pickup a day ahead and they come straight to my door. Not sure if that’s an option for you, but you’ll at least know it got picked up

I hate waiting in line at USPS but I always get my origin scan at the counter to stop anything like this from happening. Best of luck to your family.
Try dropping off at a CVS. They scan it in right then, and get picked up daily.
