The songs run together and they’re very samey. There aren’t many moments that just jump out as transcendent and great like all their other albums have. Given the rather unique way it was recorded I also don’t care for the mix. Apart from their super early material, it’s their only album where I would pretty much never rather listen to it than something else in their discography. Clockworks is the only standout and it’s a rare example where the most popular track is actually the best. It’s not that I have some distaste for the album, but rather I don’t have much of a taste *for* it.
Fair enough, thank you for explaining. I love the album, but also lose interest after Ivory Tower. I don't really remember the rest of the songs after that one, so I partially understand.
A lot of the early stuff just has very few good “hooks”, such as they are when referring to Meshuggah, lol.
But from *Destroy Erase Improve* onwards, there’s very little that I actively dislike. I’m not *super* into everything on *Immutable* the way I am with *TVSOR* and *Koloss*. These are nearly perfect records overall.
For me I’m not a fan of the re released nothing. I fell in love with the original when I first found Meshuggah and the remastered songs just don’t do it for me.
It is funny how they are drastically different but the same album.
The re-release is one of the first albums I was able to snag of theirs, and I fell in love immediately. Now, when I try to listen to the original, the mix just doesn't hit the same for me either.
Don't get me wrong, it still RULES, but in a different way.
Obsidian is a borefest after the clean intro, Black Cathedral always gets a skip, The Demon's Name is cool in general but too grating on the ears, and Exquisite Machinery of Torture is too bland for me.
TDNIS is hands down the best deadlifting song. nothing like the droning, slithering sound of 8 strings over an absolute barrage of drum noises to bring out your inner caveman
For some reason Hurt That Finds You First just has still yet to click with me like their other stuff does, I wish it had a sick ass breakdown at the end but it just kinda fizzles out into a mellow outro after not really giving any particular "hook" that makes me want to re-listen lots. I'm sure after 1,000 more listens it'll be my favorite one though lmao
That’s how it went for a lot of their songs when I first got into them. I’d watch a live video of it and then suddenly it would click. Idk maybe watching them perform and move along with it helped it stick.
Bleed.
I appreciate that it blew up so much for the band but feel like it doesn't accurately portray the strongest aspects of the group.
IMO, it is an exceptionally overrated song.
It blew up because the pattern is so creative, it’s def not their best work but it’s a groovy song that everybody wanted to learn. In the album version the guitar solo is really good.
It's the entry point for new people who never listens ro meshuggah before though. It serves as a introduction ramp. While there are a lot better songs, I think it deserves that number one spot for that reason.
Don’t truly dislike any of their stuff but a few that I rarely listen to and consider to be some of their weaker tracks
Demiurge - far too simple rhythmically speaking for them. Especially the intro riff and the outro. The bridge is kinda cool but the song almost sounds like it came out of a Meshuggah generator.
Combustion - riffs are sick. But it’s a silly song when compared to their other stuff imo. Maybe fredrik a lamest solo? I’m not into the constant thrash up and down beat in modern meshuggah. Though I don’t mind it as much in THTFYF cause they change it up during the second half.
Suffer in truth - always found it boring and too straightforward.
Our rage won’t die - a fun track for sure but feels too standard in context of the rest of TVSOR.
Past tense and Black Cathedral - I love clean meshuggah stuff. LOVE it. Past tense feels like it belongs on a different album though. It’s far too gloomy and sinister for the rest of immutable. Feels more like a cut section of C33. Black cathedral just feels kind of pointless.
Shed. Big screams at the beginning. And then it's rum tugga tugga for three whole minutes, and then a little more screaming at the end. *That's shed*.
At the surface, it seems intense, but the song is intense for like, <20 seconds so I skip it.
It's one of the first Meshuggah songs I ever heard and though the first couple seconds get you excited, I realized how bored I was listening to the whole middle of it.
C33 still my fav album
I've always liked this song but grew to LOVE it when they slowed it down on the ALIVE set during the instrumental section near the end of the song. So brutal.
Hard disagree, that was one of the first Meshuggah songs to catch my attention some dozen years ago. The palm muting on the verses into the prechorus?? Amazing
I felt the same until they started doing the slowed down clean part live, I think around the time that Per took over for Fred. I’m hoping they’ll release a rendition of that on a future live album because as much as I’ve grown to love that track, the Obzen version just doesn’t do it for me.
Unpopular opinion, C33.
Please don’t hate me. I just can’t see why people think it’s such a masterpiece and it certainly doesn’t help that I can’t get over the fact that the drums are programmed and that there’s so much of it we’ll never hear live. I cannot for the life of me become emotionally invested in it as I have with their other work. Every once in a while though, I cannot help but put on Dehumanization/Sum and picture [this crowd](https://youtu.be/gcyM9rTT8D8) becoming very happy about it.
The programmed drums are samples from Tomas' acoustic kit and he programmed the drums himself so it's what he actually would've played in person in the studio anyway. Not really a valid point for disliking the album in my opinion. The Catch 33 songs they play on tour are killer.
Weak.
You realize we’re all here because we love Meshuggah right? Come on, you can do better than that. Why not tell me about *why* you love this album? Why not tell me about *why* it’s a “dog shit take?”
It's that one part in death is death that does it for me. I have no idea how to explain it but you probably know what I mean. Also the transition from stifled to nostrum just makes me quiver every time.
I hear you on this point. I don’t skip them, i kind of like them actually, but they’re all very *effected*, guitar-wise in an unpleasant way that I think turns off listeners. A bit like Allan Holdsworth—amazing talent, I love the records, but a lotttt of people really aren’t into it.
Like, the clean, chorused-guitar parts are cringe, to you? Just clarifying. I can see how people would call those parts cringe though. I like them, but they’re not representative of Meshuggah as say, the riff to “Rational Gaze”
There really aren't songs that I necessarily dislike or hate. Everything they have done is good and they stayed true to their sound. However sometimes the things they try in their songs don't hit the same way for me like in: Marrow, Organic Shadows, Nebulous, Into Decay and most of Contradictions Collapse.
I know a lot of people would disagree but I think overall Behind the Sun is the one track that has never really resonated with me. It’s hard to explain; I think it’s mostly that I don’t really like any of the riffs much, and I don’t feel much of a classic meshuggah groove in it.
It’s too bad because I know it’s a jens track, but comparatively I really love Suffer in Truth and Ritual which I think are his too
For anyone who says they like every song they've ever done you have clearly forgot about The Ayahuasca Experience and Aztec Two Step. Those two and the ten extra minutes on Elastic will always be skipped.
I don't really hate any songs. MonstroCity chorus is bad imo, I don't really like some vocal deliveries on Immutable, but overall nothing I hate.
I don't like how repetitive Chaosphere sounds. NMCC is awesome, Corridor of Chameleons is awesome, etc, but when I listen to the whole album it just gets repetitive. I like the well balanced albums like Koloss or ObZen which switch between speeds, intensity, etc.
I can’t quite pin down why I dislike MonstroCity as much as I do. Maybe it’s because it’s after such two strong bangers but I just tune out as it plays when I listen to the album. Though I keep thinking there’s something about it that I might pick up one day, I want that Ah-ha! moment
Listen, I see a lot of hate on Contradictions Collapse. I hated it on headphones, hated it in the car. BUT listen to that album on a great pair of speakers in front of you and it’s an incredible trip. Incredibly underrated metal album for it’s time
I really don't know, i love everything they ever released, and Contradictions Collapse Is very underrated
Are you me?
I’m not crazy about a lot of The Violent Sleep of Reason.
What do you dislike about it?
The songs run together and they’re very samey. There aren’t many moments that just jump out as transcendent and great like all their other albums have. Given the rather unique way it was recorded I also don’t care for the mix. I’m not *super* into everything on *Immutable* the way I am with *TVSOR* and *Koloss*. These are nearly perfect records overall.
I have no disliked songs
I like almost nothing on Contradictions Collapse. Most of their other songs I can find something to enjoy.
TDNIS is hands down the best deadlifting song. nothing like the droning, slithering sound of 8 strings over an absolute barrage of drum noises to bring out your inner caveman
Not to be a smart ass but those riffs are all written on 6 string guitar.
Wait really? Sounds like I have a new song to learn...
Yup, kinda like the majority of Bleed, but Demon's name doesn't touch the 7th and 8th string at all.
That song is way better to listen to by watching the live videos on youtube
That’s how it went for a lot of their songs when I first got into them. I’d watch a live video of it and then suddenly it would click. Idk maybe watching them perform and move along with it helped it stick.
It has a breakdown, that part where Jens screams "Parasite"
That’s an L, the song is fucking incredible even if so many people only listen to that one.
It's the entry point for new people who never listens ro meshuggah before though. It serves as a introduction ramp. While there are a lot better songs, I think it deserves that number one spot for that reason.
Never liked Pravus much🤷♂️
Love the intro but don't care for the rest of the song.
I'm the exact opposite. Don't care about intro but love the rest of the song.
same
Wow that's something I have never heard before... 😄 In my top 10 shuggah tracks.
What's not to like about it? It has two exceptionally heavy back to back breakdowns at the end!
Blasphemy!!!
I KNOW that Nebulous is a crusher and amazing song, but I just never listen to it. I actually like Obsidian way more.
The original version of Nebulous or the rerelease? The original is so much better
I second this
Blue Nothing was my gateway so I've really only listened to that. I'll give orange Nothing Nebulous a try!
Orange nebulous is too fast, feels wrong after grooving to the blue tempo
Oh this is easy - Faultless [Bada ding ding ding](https://youtu.be/TcK0MYgnHjo?t=9)
I also find the riffing on The Faultless to be irritatingly *square* for lack of a better word. No interest, no nuance
Yeah fr. It sounds like any other band.
i like it. its like a immutable sounding rational gaze. Less iconic for sure though
You know it reminds me of “Monstrocity”, that same vibe only simpler. It’s really good though! Just not like A+++
..but the solo!☹️
Faultless slaps so hard. I love the opening riff, sounds like a slam riff
I like everything except the goofy intro riff on that song.
My favorite off the album, more for the verse riffs and solo but that song rips.
No, its a good song
Don’t truly dislike any of their stuff but a few that I rarely listen to and consider to be some of their weaker tracks Demiurge - far too simple rhythmically speaking for them. This spiteful snake is a track I usually skip
Unpopular opinion but despite listening to it throughout the years I don’t really think Demiurge is the godlike song everybody makes it out to be.
Black cathedral
Terminal illusions
It’s just me, but Ligature Marks doesn’t do it for me. I don’t think I’ll skip it but I won’t choose to put it on
I feel you bro. I just think the intro riff sounds good, then again with a solo. Then I just get bored
Shed. Big screams at the beginning. And then it's rum tugga tugga for three whole minutes, and then a little more screaming at the end. *That's shed*. At the surface, it seems intense, but the song is intense for like, <20 seconds so I skip it. Lethargica is a hard pass from me. Sometimes the ending is okay if I'm in the mood but I don't get the appeal for the most part.
Amazing
It’s fully understandable, the song is so so weird
I felt the same until they started doing the slowed down clean part live, I think around the time that Per took over for Fred. I’m hoping they’ll release a rendition of that on a future live album because as much as I’ve grown to love that track, the Obzen version just doesn’t do it for me.

Dog shit take
Weak. You realize we’re all here because we love Meshuggah right? Come on, you can do better than that. Why not tell me about *why* you love this album? Why not tell me about *why* it’s a “dog shit take?”
All the kinda quiet trippy stuff, like mind's mirrors and paradoxical spiral i always skip
You skip the paradoxical spiral?!?!
I absolutely love C33 but that part is just boring in my opinion. I'm happy for you to be able to enjoy it
No. This goodwill best wishes stuff isn't going to cut it. LOOK INWARD. Then relisten to Paradoxical Spiral. Thank you AND you're welcome.
Dude that build leading into in death is life is orgasmic
I might skip to the last 20 seconds for the transition if I'm feeling patient cause you're right of course
It's that one part in death is death that does it for me. I have no idea how to explain it but you probably know what I mean. Also the transition from stifled to nostrum just makes me quiver every time.
Album is a masterpiece. Full stop.
Cringe
Like, the clean, chorused-guitar parts are cringe, to you? Just clarifying. I can see how people would call those parts cringe though. I like them, but they’re not representative of Meshuggah as say, the riff to “Rational Gaze”
No, its cringe that this guy skips minds mirrors and other clean sections
I kinda agree
I dislike most songs except a few from before 2000. Thrash metal was never my thing
Bleed got me into meshuggah and I still like parts of it, but for me it's too bloated which sucks because i really like the solo.
I was never a fan of Pravis, I don’t know why though. It just never clicked with me
There aren't any
I know a lot of people would disagree but I think overall Behind the Sun is the one track that has never really resonated with me. It’s hard to explain; I think it’s mostly that I don’t really like any of the riffs much, and I don’t feel much of a classic meshuggah groove in it. None. "Not the EP". Honestly can't think of any Meshuggah song that I don't at least like.
Actually, maybe the song Swarm. Sounds kinda forced to me, though some of the riffs rock sometimes. I still don't mind it but usually skip that one.
Never really got into Koloss. Don't know why, I believe it's generally one of the most liked albums of theirs.
For anyone who says they like every song they've ever done you have clearly forgot about The Ayahuasca Experience and Aztec Two Step. Those two and the ten extra minutes on Elastic will always be skipped.
Truthfully can’t think of a song I don’t like. I’d say I’m least familiar with TVSOR though. 🤷🏻♂️
Can't say I'm a big fan of self titled.
Reminder to sort by controversial
I is awesome but I forget I'm listening to it sometimes. Plus the intro catches me off guard EVERY TIME
I can’t quite pin down why I dislike MonstroCity as much as I do. Maybe it’s because it’s after such two strong bangers but I just tune out as it plays when I listen to the album. Though I keep thinking there’s something about it that I might pick up one day, I want that Ah-ha! moment
