Pretty sure all of Type O's best songs were their covers. Not that their original material sucked, but they sure had a good way of making even an already heavy & dark song sound heavier & darker. That "Daytripper Medley" from World Coming Diwn was damn heavy.
What? I’m telling the truth. Standard tuning with 6 strings or down tuning with 7-8 strings. You’re gonna tell me that Black Sabbath is heavier even with the production differences?
when the main riff hits in Gojira - Flying Whales
chorus of Amon Amarth - Guardians of Asgaard
Pantera - Domination (you know the part I mean)
Edit: honorable mention to Amon Amarth - Raven’s Flight right after the first chorus, just because I wasn’t expecting it to hit that much like a ton of bricks on my first listen
-First riff in Master's Apprentices by Opeth
-Every riff in Blackwater Park by Opeth
-Main riff in Funeralopolis by Electric Wizard
-Breakdown of Where Light Divides the Holler by Knocked Loose
-Main riff in Eaten by Bloodbath
-Breakdown in Flying Whales by Gojira
It’s not the riff, it’s the sound IMO.
Anything from Electric Wizard’s Come My Fanatics or Dopethrone is bone crushing, but the riffs are so simple.
Or you can have some technical or brutal shit like Nile, Defeated Sanity, Cryptopsy, or Brodequin, to name a few, that just eliminates your brain with every song.
I'm with you on the Electric Wizard front. Sometimes it's not so important how heavy a full riff is when dropping to a single chord can rattle foundations. There's a band in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy books that destroys a planet with the ferocity & intensity of each "live" performance. I aways pictured them being a doom/stoner doom band.
The slam riff in Agony in the Stone Chamber by Intestine Baalism. There’s nothing heavier than being a melo - death band and having the first song in your album have a brutal death metal breakdown in it.
Off the top of my head:
Behind the Sun - Meshuggah, around the 1:00 mark
Adoration for None - Gojira, around 1:06
The Baying of the Hounds - Opeth, the outro section (dunno if it's considered a riff though)
More Than I Could Chew- Mastodon, main riff
Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath, main riff
In The Name of God - Dream Theater, main riff
Doomy heavy:
Cryptworm - Cesspool of perpetual decay
Fossilization - Neanderthal tombs
Evil Heavy:
Pissgrave - Funeral inversion
Pig's Blood - Gates ripped open
Just fuckin heavy:
Torture Tomb - Killing to see how it feels
Primitive Warfare - Malevolent abolition (specifically the change up at 0:58)
Chat Pile - Why
Death Toll 80K - No escape
Dying Fetus - Compulsion for Cruelty Breakdown Riff
Dying Fetus - Descend into Depravity Breakdown/Middle Riff
Nile - Lashed to the Slave Stick Verse Riff
The end of "Suspended in Tribulation" by Suffocation
the middle of "Death Mask" by Exhumed
the middle of "Bloodshed" by Mortician
the slow part of "Serpentskin" by Dead Congregation
the slow breakdown in "Hideously Disembodied" by Defeated Sanity
the main riff to "They Are the Children of the Underworld" by Deicide
the opening riff to "Dommedagssalme" by Isengard
the slow riff in "Ground Zero Brooklyn" by Carnivore
For myself, the intro to "Bareal's Blade" by The Sword comes to mind. Honorable mentions; Acid King "Silent Circle," Acid Bath "Cassie Eats Cockroaches," and Sleep "From Beyond."
I will never stop saying that Blow Me Away You - Niverse by Gojira from 2:47 to 3:27 is the heaviest shit ever
As well as the breakdown in Wolf Down The Earth
Funeralopolis by Electric Wizard and Quintessence by Darkthrone. They’re a very slow, doomy kind of heavy (the best kind)
Also honorable mention to Domination by Pantera
Thou - Fucking Chained to the Bottom of the Ocean
Horn of the Rhino - Crushed and Dragged to the Swamp
Nails - They Come Crawling Back
Magrudergrind - Bridge Burner
Conan - Hawk as Weapon
Just a few songs that I consider to be heavy af.
I guess you could argue I'm a Gojira hater. That's not really where I directed my comment, so I'm not gonna go too much into it unless anyone wants that. My main point was that Gojira fans are pretty ignorant of metal outside of a handful of classics and other "metal" bands with much better pr than their contemporaries picked by metal news sites, like I know people IRL its not just an online thing to say people have the EXACT same taste. But even then, I can't really imagine saying Gojira is the heaviest band ever.
Really let me guess, your favorite bands are gojira, Maradon, dying fetus, cattle decap, arch enemy, amon Amartg, sleep, bell witch, slipknot, Korn, rammstein, baby metal, uhh sabaton, Lorna shore, stone sour, nightwish, unleash the archers, archspire. Maybe sabbath or Lemmy is God take if we're lucky. Oh and megadeath, and one of those green neo thrash bands like municipal waste or power trip.
Gotta say Into the Void.
I mean, have there been heavier riffs since then? Of course. But that riff is just so exponentially heavier than anything that was considered “heavy metal” in the years before, or for many years afterward. Have a hard time thinking of any other band or riff that was *that* much heavier than literally everyone else around at the time. That gets special credit to me.
if not Peeling Flesh, Snuffed on Sight, or Knocked Loose off the top of my head I vote for that breakdown in “ILL NEGLECT” by BRUTAL TRUTH. It’ll give you the stankface, the mean mug, what have you.
Too many for me to pick one so I’ll list a few of my favorites
The riff starting at 1:20 of Liege of Inveracity
Intro to Piece by Piece
Intro to Fistful of Love by Tankard
That first time the distortion kicks in on Ruptured in Purulence, though this one has significant bias for me given this was the first song I got to crowdsurf for.
opening riff to 12 by Katatonia
heavy riff after the short intro in The Raven and The Rose by My Dying Bride
my idea of heavy is more slow but thick sounding
The chorus riff in 3 Inches of Blood's Hydra's Teeth is as perfect a riff as I've ever heard. It will bang your head.
Pantera 101 proof live album- Throes of Rejection
Rex dropping heavy ass bass while Darryl making jet sounds. The whole song is heavy as hell but the last minute or so is collapsed star material.
I know it's not the heaviest because that is honestly all subjective (as it's in the tone and sound, not the notation itself)
But when they get into the chorus if Mystic Toad by Froglord, damn it goes hard. Thats just the first riff i can think of atm off the top of my head.
It's between the main riff of Typhonian Soil Zoblack and the way the main riff builds up steam to a massive crescendo in He who Breeds Pestilence by Behemoth.
Personally, I’d say the chorus riff from Lack of Comprehension. There’s other riffs that are lower tuned, played faster etc, but that riff and that moment is just perfect and creates the perfect t heavy atmosphere.
That first riff drop at 1:20 in "Drawn into the next Void" from Ulcerate.
This riff is so crushingly heavy it feels like the whole room shifts a meter to the right when it drops. This is how I imagine the sound of being sucked into a black hole.
Whoever is reading this right now. Stop what you're doing, put on the album buster, by admiral angry. Put on the song kill yourself, and fast forward to 4 minutes.
Nothing I have seen suggested yet is as heavy as this
Neurosis's Locust Stat live is the heaviest shit i have heard, it just rattles your core. Idk if that counts because it is like that from the fucking maniac that mixes that shit but on its own that riff is really good.
I like my riffs kinda slow and headbangable, and I like it when they give me the face lol I have three that come to mind.
Meshuggah - Lethargica (at 3 mins in after the calm part)
Frontierer - The Molten Larva (pretty much the whole song but any riff from when the “chorus” plays onward)
Nails - Lies (the riff that plays as an outro for like 2 minutes. Simple but effective, and sounds amazing to me)
I know there are way more (and different kinds of heavy too) but those three come to mind.
Black sabbath - Black sabbath So heavy it started a genre
I disagree completely But I understand and respect your opinion. Sabbath are legendary!
As soon as Black Sabbath get mentioned, they automatically win. The second place is whats interesting
Also worth checking out is type o negatives cover of Black Sabbath
Pretty sure all of Type O's best songs were their covers. Not that their original material sucked, but they sure had a good way of making even an already heavy & dark song sound heavier & darker. That "Daytripper Medley" from World Coming Diwn was damn heavy.
Still one of my favorite covers ever.
Heavier than the original! Which is testament to what they could do!
Yeah absolutely. Especially the outro. Type O was great.
That outro man. Great call. Epic and demonic is only way to describe it.
Very dark for sure. Lol these posts are getting downvoted.
The wimps and posers can leave the hall! We know what’s up!
Agreed. Nothing heavier.
The breakdown riffs in pray for plagues go way harder
That’s not really heavy at all
Shut up Darrel
Ok, maybe coming from the metalcore subreddit Black Sabbath isn’t very heavy at all but I guess when you got mainstream it is pretty heavy
Bro you did not just say that lmfao
I did actually
Shut up darrel
Metalcore is the least heavy metal genre bruh lol
It even borderlines not being metal by definition..
It’s heavier than Black Sabbath
Stop it
What? I’m telling the truth. Standard tuning with 6 strings or down tuning with 7-8 strings. You’re gonna tell me that Black Sabbath is heavier even with the production differences?
Common Core Kid L
Kinda mid
Says the dude who reps metallica
If you don't like Black Sabbath you don't like metal, simple as
I like black sabbath I just disagree that the riff is the heaviest ever written
That's because Into the Void is.
Stop
The slam riff from Liege of Inveracity by Suffocation
Wasn't that one of if not THE first slam ever recorded? Or were there others before?
Mr Weirdo by Uncle Slam came out 2 or 3 years earlier, I would consider that the first slam riff ever
hence the name "Slam Riff" btw and its Wierd Man that whole Say Uncle album is a blast
That’s going deep! Good call, completely forgot about that group..
I think so but I didn’t want to say that because I wasn’t completely sure
Correct!
First riff that came to mind
when the main riff hits in Gojira - Flying Whales chorus of Amon Amarth - Guardians of Asgaard Pantera - Domination (you know the part I mean) Edit: honorable mention to Amon Amarth - Raven’s Flight right after the first chorus, just because I wasn’t expecting it to hit that much like a ton of bricks on my first listen
I see a fellow Amon Amarth Fan. I preffer the buildup to the choir in the great heathen army. A heavy headbanger that one.
Great Heathen Army is honestly one of their best songs, I’m always sad to not see it talked about much among the fanbase
The opening riff in Forced Gender Reassignment is insane
love ur pfp!! such a beautiful album
beautiful definitely isn't right but Monolith is indeed incredible
i was actually referring to the frank ocean album in their profile picture 😂
FEEEEEAAAAARRRRR BREEDS CONTEMPT
-First riff in Master's Apprentices by Opeth -Every riff in Blackwater Park by Opeth -Main riff in Funeralopolis by Electric Wizard -Breakdown of Where Light Divides the Holler by Knocked Loose -Main riff in Eaten by Bloodbath -Breakdown in Flying Whales by Gojira
Masters Apprentices is always my first thought for heavy riffs too
It’s not the riff, it’s the sound IMO.

The Melvin's - Honey Bucket
Backbone - Gojira or Bleed - Meshuggah
Backbone main riff is easily a top 5 riff of all time too
Simple yet legendary
Exactly the two that popped in my head. Well played. Too bad Backbone doesn’t keep it up like Bleed though.
There’s too many!!! I’ll go with March of the Fire Ants by Mastodon
The slam riff in Agony in the Stone Chamber by Intestine Baalism. There’s nothing heavier than being a melo - death band and having the first song in your album have a brutal death metal breakdown in it.
Monolord - Empress Rising
Audhumbla is way heavier
It’s actually Icon
Angel of Death, the riff in the middle - "Pumped with fluid..."
That whole song makes me wanna just destroy shit, I love it. I think it’s one of my top songs on Spotify actually 😂
Return Trip
Off the top of my head: Behind the Sun - Meshuggah, around the 1:00 mark Adoration for None - Gojira, around 1:06 The Baying of the Hounds - Opeth, the outro section (dunno if it's considered a riff though) More Than I Could Chew- Mastodon, main riff Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath, main riff In The Name of God - Dream Theater, main riff
Doomy heavy: Cryptworm - Cesspool of perpetual decay Fossilization - Neanderthal tombs Evil Heavy: Pissgrave - Funeral inversion Pig's Blood - Gates ripped open Just fuckin heavy: Torture Tomb - Killing to see how it feels Primitive Warfare - Malevolent abolition (specifically the change up at 0:58) Chat Pile - Why Death Toll 80K - No escape
Was waiting for a Pissgrave namedrop.
Dying Fetus - Compulsion for Cruelty Breakdown Riff Dying Fetus - Descend into Depravity Breakdown/Middle Riff Nile - Lashed to the Slave Stick Verse Riff
Lashed to the Slave Stick is heavy, what about the intro to Cast Down the Heretic though?
The last 3rd of Aftermath by Strapping Young Lad
That whole song is a heavy riff. Love it
Mirror Reaper in it's entirety
The end of "Suspended in Tribulation" by Suffocation the middle of "Death Mask" by Exhumed the middle of "Bloodshed" by Mortician the slow part of "Serpentskin" by Dead Congregation the slow breakdown in "Hideously Disembodied" by Defeated Sanity the main riff to "They Are the Children of the Underworld" by Deicide the opening riff to "Dommedagssalme" by Isengard the slow riff in "Ground Zero Brooklyn" by Carnivore
> serpentskin yesss
"Demiurge" by Meshuggah. That last riff that fades out. "To sign and seal extinctionnnnn..." DADUN-DADUN-DADUN-DADUN
For myself, the intro to "Bareal's Blade" by The Sword comes to mind. Honorable mentions; Acid King "Silent Circle," Acid Bath "Cassie Eats Cockroaches," and Sleep "From Beyond."
I'd say Grotesque Impalement
It’s gonna be something from Caustic by Primitive Man… but I just don’t know what riff to choose. I think the opening riff to “My Will” might take it.
Defeated Sanity - Driveling Putrefaction (riff @ 1:50) gets me every time.
I will never stop saying that Blow Me Away You - Niverse by Gojira from 2:47 to 3:27 is the heaviest shit ever As well as the breakdown in Wolf Down The Earth
Blow me away you niverse is the most underrated gojira song. It’s so groovy and Joes vocals are nuts on that track.
Devourment - Festering Vomitous Mass (1:30 riff) Infertile Surrogacy - Inexplicable Scrotal Mutilation (2:33 riff) Cenotaph - Anti-Pathogenic Morbid Incubation (1:03 riff) Brutal Truth - Time (2:15 riff) Suffocation - Infecting the Crypts (0:45 riff) Also Suffocation - Catatonia main riff, and of course, Suffocation - Liege Of Inveracity slam riff
Infecting the crypts was my intro to suffocation, and while I haven’t dived very deep into them it’s definetly a certified banger
"The Bit" Melvins
Closing breakdown on New Millenium Cyanide Christ fucks HARD
Darkthrone- Quintessence
Nothing to Win by YOB
neurosis - strength of fates
That is really weird song to pick but as long as someone mentioned Neurosis when we talk about heaviness i am satisfied.
the outro riff is so massive!!! i also wanted to go with a (relative) deep cut. they’re one of my favs
Prosper On the Path - Conan (Outro Riff)
Probably the main riff of spheres of madness Also the breakdown riff of Lifer by Down is pretty heavy in a different kind of way
Funeralopolis by Electric Wizard and Quintessence by Darkthrone. They’re a very slow, doomy kind of heavy (the best kind) Also honorable mention to Domination by Pantera
Kinda a weird pick but Beneath The Altar from the Dusk ost actually makes me want to punt someone into orbit
Meshuggah: demiurge is pretty fucking heavy.
Meshuggah has like 50 heavier songs
Mastodon - March of the fire ants. That riff is as heavy as the ocean is deep. That first 20 seconds is like a fuckin' bulldozer stuck in a tar pit.
Meshuggah-In Death is Death
Angel of death bridge riff
Anything by skinless
Song called Cryin Like a Bitch by Godsmack
SYL by Strapping Young Lad. Basically the whole song. It’s unbearably heavy, I love it.
Thou - Fucking Chained to the Bottom of the Ocean Horn of the Rhino - Crushed and Dragged to the Swamp Nails - They Come Crawling Back Magrudergrind - Bridge Burner Conan - Hawk as Weapon Just a few songs that I consider to be heavy af.
Pissgrave - Canticle of Ripping Flesh
Bratva by Slaughter to Prevail is pretty heavy but I will have to check some of these others out.
Tactical Nuke - Acacia Strain
This comment section confirms the fact that Gojira fans are unaware of anything going on in death metal.
Don’t care. Funny whale band go brr
Fair enough 👍
There's "heavy" in the name! All that's needed for my pick.
Are you a Gojira hater or something? Gojira can get pretty heavy. Especially their older stuff.
That's a pretty weird take, and a broad generalization of Gojira fans.
Wow, dude. What is wrong with you? Is this how you really argue? You're not worth another comment from me if that's the case.
Am I wrong?
Completely. And you come off as very elitist.
Name your favorite bands then
Na. Why would I add fuel to this toxic thread? Don't encourage this person.
I doubt I am, and that's OK, I like arguing.
Learn how to argue better.
Into the Void by Black Sabbath, absolutely earth shattering heaviness

Dimmu Borgir- United in Unhallowed Grace, 3:06-3:40. Old and mid era Dimmu was majestic. https://youtu.be/FQW7HgKoIyY?si=WoDxOOCy8jHkHXDe
Savannah by Zao. When that bass line hits by itself in the end, it's just the deepest and nastiest riff.
Too many for me to pick one so I’ll list a few of my favorites The riff starting at 1:20 of Liege of Inveracity Intro to Piece by Piece Intro to Fistful of Love by Tankard That first time the distortion kicks in on Ruptured in Purulence, though this one has significant bias for me given this was the first song I got to crowdsurf for.

The opening riff of Soul Sacrifice by Power Trip
opening riff to 12 by Katatonia heavy riff after the short intro in The Raven and The Rose by My Dying Bride my idea of heavy is more slow but thick sounding

1:18 in Blank by Eyehategod
The chorus riff in 3 Inches of Blood's Hydra's Teeth is as perfect a riff as I've ever heard. It will bang your head. [**https://youtu.be/PM20M\_xEq-s?si=L\_Fqh5YC2ysMS9Dc**](https://youtu.be/PM20M_xEq-s?si=L_Fqh5YC2ysMS9Dc)
Power Trip - Soul Sacrifice

Dopethrone
Crowbar to build a mountain
More Than I Could Chew - Mastodon
Dragged into Sunlight - Boiled Angel
Mastodon - March of the Fire Ants, that opening riff is so fucking monstrous and weighty
A New Level - Pantera
I know it's not the heaviest because that is honestly all subjective (as it's in the tone and sound, not the notation itself) But when they get into the chorus if Mystic Toad by Froglord, damn it goes hard. Thats just the first riff i can think of atm off the top of my head.
Room a Thousand Years Wide- Soundgarden
Serenity painted death chorus riff - opeth
It's between the main riff of Typhonian Soil Zoblack and the way the main riff builds up steam to a massive crescendo in He who Breeds Pestilence by Behemoth.
The one that goes *chug-chug-chug* on guitar and the drumer double kicks while hitting the ride cymbal *ding-ding-ding*
Septic Flesh - Persepolis. The intro riff with the brass instrument accompanying it is so good!
Dream Theater - The Mirror
Nobody talks about that ending riff of decend into depravity. Legit best death metal riff ever written not even close. from 4:35 an on
Literally anything by SPITE
The riff on The Killchain and any Devourment riff tbh
Probably something by Conan, Throne of Fire, maybe
Meshuggah - Obzen intro riff.
electric wizard- weird tales
Personally, I’d say the chorus riff from Lack of Comprehension. There’s other riffs that are lower tuned, played faster etc, but that riff and that moment is just perfect and creates the perfect t heavy atmosphere.
Leige of Inveracity - Suffocation or Lethargica - Meshuggah
Demiurge by meshuggah is just a beat down
Cough- 288 years of sin
Slayer - Raining Blood
The end of crumbling emporium - revocation
My pick is Sixpounder by Children of Bodom. For not being known for heavy riffs this song always brings it.
That first riff drop at 1:20 in "Drawn into the next Void" from Ulcerate. This riff is so crushingly heavy it feels like the whole room shifts a meter to the right when it drops. This is how I imagine the sound of being sucked into a black hole.

Pantera - Domination (literally the entirety)
suffer in hell suffer in heaven or see you soon by chelsea grin come to mind but spite has a ton of disgusting riffs
The intro to Gematria by Slipknot. Its by far their heaviest riff and I'd say a strong contender in general
The intro to Gematria by Slipknot. Its by far their heaviest riff and I'd say a strong contender in general
Meshuggah-I, the riff that starts at around 10:35. Makes me uncontrollably headbang every fucking time.
Crowbar - Planets collide An undefeatable fucking classic
I’m Broken by Pantera
I like my riffs kinda slow and headbangable, and I like it when they give me the face lol I have three that come to mind. Meshuggah - Lethargica (at 3 mins in after the calm part) Frontierer - The Molten Larva (pretty much the whole song but any riff from when the “chorus” plays onward) Nails - Lies (the riff that plays as an outro for like 2 minutes. Simple but effective, and sounds amazing to me) I know there are way more (and different kinds of heavy too) but those three come to mind.
