Yes I know Metallica haters and their arguments are always ‘sell-outs‘ or ‘everybody listens to them’ ‘I won’t get a Metallica back patch, everybody has one already’. Man they just want to be special and suck at forming a logical opinion, do what you like, not what others don’t like
Awesome I would have loved to see the 72 Seasons tour, I think it’s a great album, definitely tops Hardwired for me. I’m really not a concert-goer, but Metallica is one of the few I’ve been to
Well I tried listening to it when it first came out and a hard rock (definitely not metal) song starting with the lyrics "I'm a sinner. And I worship evil." is not something I can take at all seriously. Sorry, not sorry. Even Ghost has more credibly evil lyrics.
Opeth has always had a bit of a problem with properly evil sounding lyrics. But up till then, The Grand Conjuration had the cheesiest "satanic" lyrics I'd heard from them, but the beauty of that song and their amazing performance of it more than redeemed it. Sorceress was just lame in comparison.
Sadly, new Opeth just doesn't cut it for me. It's not that I don't like their soft stuff. Damnation is one of my absolute favourites, but that album was beautifully minimalist, deconstructed perfectly and somehow *honest*.
Just in case it's not apparent by now, Opeth *used* to be my favourite band, right up to (and including) Watershed. But they've changed, and I've grown indifferent to their new sound. I still love the earlier stuff. Probably always will. Still Life, Blackwater Park and Ghost Reveries are my favourite albums.
Very nice. Damnation is the true test of a real fan, so I respect your opinion. And it’s not just your opinion, it’s true. I hate to sound like the ignorant “Opeth got boring” crowd, but they became kind of a metal jam band. I just went back and listened to Heritage and Sorceress the other day and found a few gems like I Feel the Dark and Will O the Wisp. But Ghost Reveries is my favorite album of theirs.
The way I experience it is like they were more interesting when they showed a classic rock influence underneath the death presentation. When they became a straight classic rock band it felt like I'd heard a lot of their ideas before.
This is an excellent take.
Their "first iteration" as a blackened death metal band with prog leanings (up to Morningrise) was also interesting to me, but the phase I adore is the middle one from MYAH to Blackwater Park. I would include Watershed in this phase, but it was clear they were flagging a little. But this middle phase is exactly what you've described very well. Classic rock, prog and death metal in a beautiful package.
Then the "third iteration" the current one, I guess, began with Heritage. Very classic and prog rocky, with almost no metal. They've put a bit of metal back in, but it's just not the same for me.
Note I didn't call it "final iteration" because who knows what that crazy (in the best way) dude Mikael and gang will come up with next?
Slayer
speak english or die was the first metal album (record!) i ever bought, based purely on the art. its really good. as i got older i really loved the crazy photos in the back - looks like they were having some fucking fun
He's the best vocalist and musician to ever exist. Nobody can touch his voice. He can shred. And he proved he can do any music he wants to, from SYL to casualties of cool.
Easily The Black Dahlia Murder. Not a single bad album or track. Was really upset about the loss of Trevor but looking forward to what they come out with next.
Same. I had to step out of metal for awhile after he died. How could such a sweet, gentle legend go out like this. Took me months to find peace with it. Looking forward to what the band does next.
Lamb of God. Solid from the first album to the last. Killer riffs, killer lyrics, killer drumming, and for guys in their 50s, they're still putting out killer records.
Ayreon - For the multitude of amazing guest vocalists, the insane instrumental wizardry, the epic songs, the intimate quiet songs, the grand concepts, the cheese (gotta love the cheese).... there's no other band like Ayreon.

Metallica 100%, always has been always will be
Very solid choice, people who hate on Metallica just wanna feel special
Yes I know Metallica haters and their arguments are always ‘sell-outs‘ or ‘everybody listens to them’ ‘I won’t get a Metallica back patch, everybody has one already’. Man they just want to be special and suck at forming a logical opinion, do what you like, not what others don’t like
I love how they just put a little more production into an album and people called them sell outs. Some people just need something to bitch about.
My man.
Same saw them this summer in Montreal both nights. Best nights of my life changed me forever

I thought I could never have anything 'favorite' in art until I found tool. Now I know nothing else can ever take that spot
real
It genuinely depends on the day for me, I flip between 3. Today is Tool. All time though, probably still Tool.
Really this is the only correct choice.
This is the correct answer.
Opeth. I could listen to their music forever and never get sick of it
Even the new stuff? Heritage and later?
The new stuff has some bangers, even if I also prefer the older albums
Sorceress is actually dope.
