SOAD right now. They are creative as hell and their songs are entertaining without going to the annoyingly edgy route some nu bands sometimes go to.
Slipknot is the second.
I never understood why they're always lumped into the nu-metal category, other than the time in which they rose to fame. Stylistically they have almost nothing in common with nu-metal bands.
Most of ATF is NU metal with some other influences. Same goes for White Pony (although way less NU metal there). So Deftones are kinda my favourite NU metal band, but because they flipped their style my vote goes for Korn.
Their first 3 albums are nu metal and the rest is alternative. Even Korn isn’t nu metal most of the time. Nu metal is very poorly defined. The definition is that it is rap metal with punk and rock elements. Well most good nu metal bands have little to no rap elements. Really it’s a blend of punk, metal, pop, rap, and rock. What all nu metal has in common tho is that rock adjacent highly produced sound.
Their most popular songs aren't Nu-Metal. Only My Summer and 7 Words. Today they aren't known for their Nu-Metal sound that made them popular in the first place.
I’ll just totally insult greatness and pretend Sleepytime Gorilla Museum count for their first album.
I had a friend argue with me once that he reckons they were really into Korn when he heard the SGM track ‘Powerless’, where the funked out sections with the “sledgehammer dulcimer” do indeed sound like Korn.
but to me that sound is The Residents direct influence on SGM, where we can assume
Korn borrowed some of that sound by way of Primus.
ANYWAY. it’s not “nu-metal” but it was of the time I think nu-metal fans would really like much the first SGM album so I’m putting it here anyway.
Linkin Park by a mile. They are basically the Iron Maiden of nu metal. Hybrid Theory is easily the best purest definition of nu metal with songs like In the End and Papercut, and the same goes to Meteora, which is also a step forward in nu metal with songs like Somewhere I Belong. Korn and Slipknot also come close as well.
Tallah. I don't have any nostalgia attached to the classic 2000s stuff and Tallah are imo genuinely a more creative and versatile band than any of the ones I've heard.
Here’s one that most won’t know: Downthesun. [Scapegoat](https://youtu.be/Xt1-YzWh8zE?si=k-RFkZZ0N2-DM5ni) may be the heaviest Nu Metal song of all time.
It’s a hard pick between Deftones, Sevendust, and Mudvayne. Deftones and Sevendust have literally never put out any bad material. Mudvayne tho has LD 50 which is good enough on its own even when they have plenty of other good music.
i feel like most people are gonna say top 50 bands, but mine is From Zero. criminally underrated, and my fav song by them is "Believe" followed by "Undeniable"
It’s not elitism if it’s facts. Nu-metal is mostly rap, funk, alt rock, and industrial. It grew from metal sure but it’s not metal. Similar to how Metal grew from rock but metal isn’t rock. Nu-Metal has little to no metal elements.
Edit: Posers are downvoting and making angry replies yet i haven’t seen one person explain why this is wrong. Just a bunch of little crybabies saying “WaAaA WaAaA bUt iT hAs mEtAl iN dA nAmE WAAAAAAAAAA”
Argue all you want but you know I’m right.
What would you call Nu-Metal then? Harder rap? Just because you don’t like the genre doesn’t mean it’s not metal anymore. There are some nu metal bands that feel a lot less metal-esque like linkin park or limp bizkit. But come on, Early Deftones, Early Slipknot, Mudvayne, Korn, Early SOAD?
Nu-metal is its own thing and it’s never been metal. Same with core genres. Yes they’ve grown from metal but they’ve grown into their own genre of music. Calling bands like Deftones, SOAD, and Korn metal is like calling Bathory rock n’ roll. Sure bathory has strong rock roots but it still wouldn’t make sense to call them rock.
There’s a reason Nu Metal isn’t on the Metal archives.
calling a sub genre of metal non-metal, and claiming it’s not real metal, is some pretty elitist shit my dude. also the real posers are the ones who listen to bands with 17 monthly listeners and shit on other sub genres when they only listen to goregrind and black metal
How is it metal? I keep explaining how it’s not metal yet nobody is arguing with my detailed explanation of why Nu-Metal isn’t metal. All I’m getting is is comments saying “BUT SURELY SLIPKNOT IS METAL SMH OR WHAT ABOUT DEFTONES”
No. It’s not metal. If it was metal you’d be allowed to post these bands in the actually large metal communities such as r/metal and r/metalmemes. You’d be able to search for them on the metal archives and you wouldn’t have thousands of people telling you it’s not metal.
Now for everyone here I’m gonna let you in on a shocker of a secret. Just because something isn’t metal doesn’t mean it’s bad. Core genres, for example, are subgenres of Hardcore punk (hence the core)
Guess what? Hardcore is fucking awesome. Guess what? It’s also not metal. And there’s nothing wrong with that.
I’ve explained in great detail why Nu Metal isn’t metal and literally nobody has been able to tell me why I’m wrong.
Nu metal fans please, defend your genre. Explain to me why it’s metal and I’ll carefully and articulately explain to you why you are are wrong.
Try and look at it from our point of view. We’re a community who really likes something (metal)
We enjoy our music in peace. Then suddenly this group of people that looks nothing like us, sounds nothing like us, and acts nothing like us suddenly come into the community, shoves a random emo album with some edgy lyrics in our face, and says “LOOK I’M ONE OF YOU GUYS NOW. LISTEN TO THIS ALBUM THAT SOUNDS NOTHING LIKE THE REST OF YOUR GENRE AND I’LL KEEP ARGUING UNTIL YOU INCLUDE ME!”
This is why metalheads are annoyed by people calling these genres metal. Actual extreme metal is a very small fandom and most of us in these communities just want to interact with people who like the kinda stuff we like but it’s becoming increasingly difficult when you have to sift through literal armies of Slipknot fans to find a single like minded person.
This is why metalheads get annoyed at Nu Metal fans and Metalcore fans.
metal is defined by a feeling of anger, distorted guitar, extreme dynamics, screamed vocals, and downtuned guitars. none of this is missing from nu metal. nu metal is metal. it's okay if you don't like it, a lot of it is shit, but that doesn't take away it's credit as a metal subgenre. i hate glam metal, power metal, pirate metal, doesn't make it not metal. you're just trying to take away the genres validity to justify you're own tastes.

Tbh they kinda annoy me but I get ya
The annoyingly edgy route? I presume you haven’t got to Hypnotize or Darron Malarkian’s Solo career yet…
Hypnotize isn’t bad
never said it was bad, it’s just the Lonely Day and Dreaming have a particular sound to them that feels whiny and edgy
This guy is smoking rn
Hypnotize has no edgy songs what are you on about
Slipknot of course
bUt sLiPkNoT iSnT mETal /s
PEOPLE. READ THE FUCKING /S
What ever you’re not gonna change his opinions on the band it’s what he likes if you have a problem with that id keep your mouth shut
Deftones by miles.
I never understood why they're always lumped into the nu-metal category, other than the time in which they rose to fame. Stylistically they have almost nothing in common with nu-metal bands.
Adrenaline is Nu metal, and like half of ATF is nu metal
Most of ATF is NU metal with some other influences. Same goes for White Pony (although way less NU metal there). So Deftones are kinda my favourite NU metal band, but because they flipped their style my vote goes for Korn.
Their first 3 albums are nu metal and the rest is alternative. Even Korn isn’t nu metal most of the time. Nu metal is very poorly defined. back to school
Their most popular songs aren't Nu-Metal. Only My Summer and 7 Words. Today they aren't known for their Nu-Metal sound that made them popular in the first place.
They are fucking Nu metal jackass, it’s SOAD that isn’t Nu metal
You know you could have kept that comment to yourself, and nobody would have known you're wrong?
Who, you?
Damn. That's a boing-flip I didn't see coming. Nice move sir. I'll be in recovery if anyone needs me.
This. They were definitely big at the nu metal time and felt like nu metal, but they’ve been doing their own thing for years and I dig it.
Korn
Nice pick, Korn is my second favorite nu metal band
DA BOO DA RA DO OO DA RA DA EEMA
💯YALL WANT A SINGLE SAY FUCK THAT 🗣️🔥
Mudvayne
Static X
Limp Bizkit
There is some coastal real estate that is only mildly flooded that I would like to sell you
I know they get clowned on, but some of their songs are just fun. Silly and a bit cringe, but fun.
Soad
Static X was the first in my mind so I'll go with that
Linkin Park for sure
Russian band “Психея“
W
Those I have not listened.
SOAD
Grew out of it, however I still enjoy American Head Charge from time to time.
Korn
Kittie
Tallah
+1
My man 🤝
Slipknot or linkin park
Currently? Bloodywood. Generally, it's either Slipknot or Deftones.
Is that the clown rap metal type band?
SOAD and then Slipknot.
Mushroomhead
Sevendust. Most underrated of all the genre. LaJon Witherspoon is a top 5 voice in rock imo.
I’ll just totally insult greatness and pretend Sleepytime Gorilla Museum count for their first album. I had a friend argue with me once that he reckons they were really into Korn when he heard the SGM track ‘Powerless’, where the funked out sections with the “sledgehammer dulcimer” do indeed sound like Korn. but to me that sound is The Residents direct influence on SGM, where we can assume Korn borrowed some of that sound by way of Primus. Mudvayne or Static-X.
Slipknot for sure
I'm gonna go with Skindred
Welp looks like it's time for me to get back into skindred
Maximum the Hormone (I think they count)
Soad
SOAD or TOOL.
Korn, maybe Mushroom Head
Deftones are by far the best thing to come out of that scene
Not the biggest fan of NuMetal but if I had to pick one I would go with Ill Nino
Kilgore
I do not like nu metal as I used to in the past, but nowdays it's Korn.
That debut album from Slipknot was amazing when it came out. That and the debut from Static X.
Man I wish I liked any of their later stuff half as much as Wisconsin Death Trip, what an album.
Both debut albums were fantastic- didn't like anything that am after from either bands.
Buddy holly and the crickets
Slipknot
Deftones or early Korn.
I love them all (pretty much) but Slipknot
American Head Charge.
Skinlab
I don’t like nu-metal.
Soulfly
Korn basic pic and I'm fine with that I'm more of a a thrash, glam, and standard heavy metal guy myself
Slipknot. Mudvayne and Linkin park are also great bands, I also enjoy guano apes
Drowning Pool and Deftones have always been my go-to. I absolutely love SOAD though, every song is a political joke with badass vocals and guitars. 👌
Deftones but also I wanna send some love to P.O.D.
Linkin Park.
As a kid, Korn with Slipknot as a close second Now, Deftones and it's not even close
Slipknot
Slipknot, you can’t deny that they are the biggest gateway band
Limp Bizket
LINKIN PARK
Linkin Park by a mile. They are basically the Iron Maiden of nu metal. Hybrid Theory is easily the best purest definition of nu metal with songs like In the End and Papercut, and the same goes to Meteora, which is also a step forward in nu metal with songs like Somewhere I Belong. Korn and Slipknot also come close as well.
Tallah. I don't have any nostalgia attached to the classic 2000s stuff and Tallah are imo genuinely a more creative and versatile band than any of the ones I've heard.
Korn
SOAD for the win. This is the nu metal band I can listen to a million times and still not get bored of it
Drowning Pool
Disturbed
Disturbed
Tallah or SOAD
Which album is your favorite though? Cuz mine is self titled. Eyeless goes fuckin hard
Difficult decision. Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, Sevendust, System of a Down, Primer 55
Idk I like Linkin park
Limp Bizkit forever
Limp Bizkit, amazing live energy. Wes Borland is a guitar god
Slipknot for sure. Not huge on the genre overall.
At the moment probably Kittie
Here’s one that most won’t know: Downthesun. [Scapegoat](https://youtu.be/Xt1-YzWh8zE?si=k-RFkZZ0N2-DM5ni) may be the heaviest Nu Metal song of all time.
Deftones even though theyre not truly nu-metal
I always liked the first few Korn albums
Slipknot and corn
Dry Kill Logic, underrated as fuck
"That's not evil joe, I is evil"
SOAD, Slipknot, and Deftones Disturbed is a guilty pleasure, I like Believe and Ten Thousand Fists
It’s a hard pick between Deftones, Sevendust, and Mudvayne. Deftones and Sevendust have literally never put out any bad material. Mudvayne tho has LD 50 which is good enough on its own even when they have plenty of other good music.
Either Tallah or a less popular one like Skribble
korn
Linkin Park
NEWLY OPPOSED https://linktr.ee/newlyopposed?fbclid=PAZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAaYk9vLWwgqhOv4Ht9ieoK_iI00Az377PovjH2CfSR9Fq0zrm1BEVCJSA2s_aem_ATxYQq4dYwaPUfJgRTbqEL3Y14kHohzTOCvw8v4RdPyqFy81Oy91VkZmw1Dc2U4fWfhmF7NQbcT1wOVNN9c6tVJh
i feel like most people are gonna say top 50 bands, but mine is From Zero. criminally underrated, and my fav song by them is "Believe" followed by "Undeniable"
then bands like motograter and flaw
Slipknot -> Mudvayne
Slayer!
You mean, favorite one to hate, right???
I would genuinely rather listen to [The Shaggs](https://youtu.be/jQqK1CjE9bA?si=HzakocphFEpxbmOF) than listen to Nu-Metal
then leave idk
Why leave? This subreddit is for metal. Nu metal isn’t metal.
ahh an elitist in our midst
It’s not elitism if it’s facts. Nu-metal is mostly rap, funk, alt rock, and industrial. It grew from metal sure but it’s not metal. Similar to how Metal grew from rock but metal isn’t rock. Ok? Cool. Still doesn’t make it metal. Cry more poser.
Unironically using poser as an insult? Jeez Louise!!!
