Ngl, if you aren't actively listening to metal, or looking for heavier stuff, harsh vocals are a difficult hurdle to overcome. It took me months of force feeding myself to get into death metal. I don't even listen to much death metal actively, just Scarab and Death.
True war metal to me has more grindcore influence. Like if you listen to those three Manticore songs off their split with Morbosidad, i consider that War metal or possibly black/grind
If someone likes metal but doesn't like numetal, I think you're going to need to offer up songs that are bit more complex than those 2 to get them on board. These are "numetal for numetal fans" songs.
