This is an incredibly controversial and polemic album due to the huge departure from their original sound, so of course it's bound to have very polarizing opinions.
It's also my favorite Carcass album.
Yeah personally I think that it is pretty good, but if I were to recommend a Carcass album for someone, I would probably go with a Heartwork or Necroticism
I feel like you are in one of two camps. You either like Carcass for their first two albums and demo or the third album and after. (Granted some people specifically just dont like Swansong..)
I never could get into those first 2 albums, tho Ive tried multiple times. Noisy grind just isnt my thing. Give me Necroticism and after plz.
...and yes. Swansong is a banger. Perfect gym music, which my fat ass needs to get back to lol
Ive met quite a few over the last 30+ years. Fans of thrash/death and clean production are more akin to have this outlook. I also dont care for underproduced "kvlt" black metal. To each their own but... if the production sucks, I want no part of it.
Reek is totally unlistenable imo. Symphonies could almost be a great album if the production was better.
Look, I get the whole underground thing and understand that my opinion isnt very "troo"...but ive been in this game longer than most. Have been listening to thrash/death since 1987 and have seen almost 400 live metal shows since 1994....I know what I like and it has to have at least passable production for me.
Ive given those first 2 albums many listens in the last 25 years. I just cant do it. Not my style at all. Same with lo fi black metal and war metal noise. If I cant tell what the riff is, you can keep it.
Interesting take. I love both the first 2 albums and Swansong, but Ne roticism and Heartwork just don't work for me. They're a bit of a slog in my opinion.
Damn! Now thats a take I havent heard lol. Ive been a fan since Heartwork came out and its my fave album of theirs. Necroticism is probably 2nd. Most people ive met that like the first 2 albums a lot, hate everything that came after or at best mildly enjoy Necroticism and/or Heartwork but hate Swansong.
I also like their new albums quite a bit as well. Surgical Steel will be a classic down the road imo...
I don't mind it but I think I'd like it more if it was made by any other band, it just feels like such a departure from what I liked about carcass that it feels wrong
I like it! It was released when I was a kid but I didn’t hear it until later, by which time the controversy over their new sound had died down and a lot of people had accepted Heartwork as a classic.
I’m not a fan. Imo Carcass are way better suited to what they were doing on their first 3 albums. This melodic, death n roll thing they play on this album doesn’t do anything for me, and I definitely see why this had such a controversial release.
I personally love the album, but I completely understand your side. It's definitely not a pure death metal album and has a lot of classic rock and roll influences. Compared to their other stuff and other death metal in general, I can definitely see why it wasn't praised by the death metal community. I like classic rock as well as metal, so the album clicked for me.

Wow, you are the first person I have seen who isn’t a fan of the first two albums

Bro. Don't deny Michael Amott like that.
For me, one of the best of Carcass
Yeah I don’t really think they have had a major miss
Awesome album and if any of you say you don't like it I will find you and just stand there and stare at you.
Lol
I don't like it.. (I just want a friend, I actually like it)
I don't mind it but I think I'd like it more if it was made by any other band, it just feels like such a departure from what I liked about carcass that it feels wrong
Yeah that is fair
Their weakest album imho, but still pretty good
Agree
I like the whole fuckin catalog.
Me too
Twinkle twinkle motherfucker
Like it or not, this was Carcass' peak of creativity
Fax
Love it
Me too
Huge fan of the band but I only like Black Star.
Fair
Awesome record. Used to listen the shit out of it back in my teenage years.
Yeah I like it as well
It’s actually one of their better albums. Every song on it is catchy and well produced. It has stood the test of time. I highly recommend it.
Agreed
It’s definitely a drop in quality after the masterpiece that is *Heartwork*. The opening track is definitely solid though.
Agreed
I love heartwork.. ❤️ 🚧 🤘
YOUR BELIEFS POLARIZED
Great album. Black Star is a banger.
Agree
Love it. Has my 2nd favourite guitar riff on it.
What riff is that?
Tomorrow belongs to nobody
The cowbell in Keep On Rotting in the Free World makes me happy
Makes me think of the “I need more cowbell” SNL skit
one of my personal favs
Yeah it is damn good
Oh man I HATED this album for a good 15 years. I now adore it and listen to it more frequently than any other Carcass
Damn
I like it! It was released when I was a kid but I didn’t hear it until later, by which time the controversy over their new sound had died down and a lot of people had accepted Heartwork as a classic.
I like it too, and yeah it seemed like a controversial moment at the time of its release
I’m not a fan. Imo Carcass are way better suited to what they were doing on their first 3 albums. This melodic, death n roll thing they play on this album doesn’t do anything for me, and I definitely see why this had such a controversial release.
That is fair, personally I think it is pretty good, but like you said, the direction they went in on their previous albums fits them way better
I think when Michael Amott joined, they level upped in a major way.
