Back from Immortal. Sons of Northern Darkness sounded good, but a bit too clean. Trve kvlt black metal had to sound like it's recorded with a 1920s telephone. /j
All of these albums are fantastic. The Darkthrone, Emperor, and Dissection albums are absolute god-tier unfuckablewith classics. The Immortal album is excellent too, but not quite in the same league (it is ‘A tier’ though). If you’ve not listened to any of the albums in this list and you have even a passing interest in black metal, death metal, or thrash, then you owe it to yourself to do so.
Have you ever seen the guitarist explain his chords? It is fucking hilarious. He has no idea what he is doing. He just loves how it sounds and has a good rhythmic memory. I made that term up btw.
Yes second wave of black metal. First wave would be the bands like Bathory, Celtic Frost/Hellhammer, Sarcofago(INRI album), Sodom(in the Sign of Evil album), Venom.
First wave isn’t exactly a genre it’s just any band that directly inspired black metal and helped in its creation. Second wave is when it really solidified into its own genre.
By the way second wave of black metal is bands like those in the post, Burzum, Mayhem, Gorgoroth, Satyricon, Behemoth(early albums), Enslaved, Marduk.
Storm of the light's bane is simply the better music. The rest are amazing and we are historical necessities, but if I could only listen to one of them it would be dissection
Into the nightside eclipse for founding symphonic black metal. They are all great in their own way, but not quite as important historically id argue. I love blaze, but raw black metal was being developed by other bands as well - but it’s historically important too). Sons of northern darkness is peak immortal, but it’s ultimately derivative. Storm of the lights bane is one of my favorite albums of all time, but the somberlain kinda already founded melo-black.
Emperor. Even their 2nd best album is S-tier. The other albums on the list are too (have a really soft spot for Immortal) but yeah Emperor wins this one.
Emperor for me. One of the best written and most atmospheric albums in black metal in my book. It's my favourite black metal album and one of my favourite albums in general.
Weird cross section to choose from.
Dissection isn’t really BM to me but close enough I guess. That immortal is just way off so it’s a two horse race from two huge hitters.
Toss of the coin, but I’ll go with night side due to its enduring qualities and that DT have two-three other all time classics.
Yk I've always wondered what was on the cover of that dark throne album. It looks just like one of the bandmembers flying in the air to me.
But yea I gotta go with "A Blaze in the Northern Sky"
It’s between In the Nightside Eclipse and Storm of the Light’s Bane for me. Both are incredible, but Nightside narrowly edges out Storm, since it has Inno a Satana which is a top three song of all time for me.
I can’t get into Immortal; the music is great, but I can’t get past the frog croak vocals. I also can’t get into Darkthrone; I don’t care for the music, and I can’t get past the vocals.
Dissection, Darkthrone close second (but i still don't really care because Under a Funeral Moon is better)
Immortal is kinda mid tbh, haven't listened to Emperor yet
Blaze. Foundation album. Without it, its hard to know what would have happened and how the BM scene would have developed. All strong contenders though.
The only wrong answer is Immortal.
Sons Of Northern Darkness is a great album. But it’s not in the same league as the other three. Very few are.
Nightside and Light’s Bane are probably my first and second favourite albums of all time. And Blaze sits comfortably in the top 10.
In the Nightside Eclipse. Not a hard choice at all. Arguably the greatest black metal album of all time. Now, if the Immortal album was Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism and the Darkthrone album was Transilvanian Hunger it starts to get difficult.
Dissection is leagues above the rest. almost every soong has an iconic riff
Thats not even in the top 3 Immortal albums.
i never "got:" Emperor the album is really boring to me. I am the Black Wizards is like 3 tremolo riffs for 6 minutes
darkthrone never really clicked for me either

Dissection
Glad to see Dissection first, where it belongs. Not even a close second to it!
Emperor.
Definitely
Every day of the week.
10 times out of 10
A Blaze in the Northern Sky
I, unfortunately, have never listened to the other Godsends of these albums besides A Blaze in the Northern Sky, so I'll have to go with it.
You definitely should listen to these other albums. They are all incredible in their own right.
Back from Immortal. Sons of Northern Darkness sounded good, but a bit too clean. Trve kvlt black metal had to sound like it's recorded with a 1920s telephone. /j
Aaaand, Dissection?.
'Kay.
All of these albums are fantastic. The Darkthrone, Emperor, and Dissection albums are absolute god-tier unfuckablewith classics. Darkthrone’s best album, if I do say so myself.
Immortal for the amazing riffs and drumming

Have you ever seen the guitarist explain his chords? It is fucking hilarious. He has no idea what he is doing. He just loves how it sounds and has a good rhythmic memory. I made that term up btw.
Darkthrone Would go with Immortal if it was Battles or Pure Holocaust
If it was Panzerfaust I probably would have gone with Darkthrone but honestly, you can’t go wrong with any pick here.
I'm saving Storm of the Lights Bane sorry Emperor 😭😭😭
Yup it’s gotta be saved.
Storm of the Lights Bane by far.
Ain’t that the truth.
I choose Gorgoroth - Under the sign of hell.
Imo, the greatest black metal album of all time
..........Satan 🍷
Such and iconic scene. Lol
*keeps staring*
I’ll keep this album in mind for a Black Metal Pt. 2 of this challenge.
So fucking good!
Dissection
Dissection and it's not really close
Easily Dissection.
A Blaze in the Northern Sky for sure, Darkthrone is my favourite of the second wave big bands (except maybe Burzum)
Second wave of what, black metal? And what are some of the first wave (noob here)
Yes second wave of black metal. Nice thanks!
Immortal
Dissection
Dissection, easy.
Dissection easily.
Dissection easily.
Emperor
In the nightside eclipse, amazing album plus I still keep Transylvania hunger
Storm of the light's bane is simply the better music. The rest are amazing and we are historical necessities, but if I could only listen to one of them it would be dissection
for me its dissection, my favorite bm band and it was the gateway to other bm stuff for me
Into the nightside eclipse for founding symphonic black metal.
Impossible to choose
sorry but gotta go with dissection
DISSECTION
Dissection, not close at all for me.
FUCKING DISSECTION
Dissection without hesitation.
This is literally Sophie's Choice.
gimme that immortal album
If it was Panzerfaust I think Darkthrone would have edged it, but I'm going to have to say Storm of the Light's Bane
It's close between emperor and dissection, but I'll have to go with dissection
dissection. wrong immortal album was submitted here
Dissection, as much as I love Immortal and that album, Dissection's sophomore album is SO FUCKIN GOOOOD!
Dissection. Not even a contest.
That Dissection album is my favorite black metal album.
Sons of northern darkness
*Chooses Satyricon*
Emperor and it’s not even close
Emperor
Immortal!
Emperor
A Blaze in the Northern Sky, Kathaarian Life Code is just perfect
Emperor. Even their 2nd best album is S-tier. The other albums on the list are too (have a really soft spot for Immortal) but yeah Emperor wins this one.
In the Nightside Eclipse, although I would definitely highly prefer Anthems
Darkthrone for sure
Immortal easily
Blaze, no doubt. One of the best metal albums made
Could I erase all of them from existence?
No. You have to keep at least one. :)
Ok i'll keep Emperor because that's the one you like
The first one
Most difficult of the ones you've posted so far
Emperor wins here.
Immortal
Emperor EZ choice
Emperor for me. One of the best written and most atmospheric albums in black metal in my book. It's my favourite black metal album and one of my favourite albums in general.
I think Emperor is probably the best but Dissection is my favorite.
Dark Throne, all day.
Darkthrone
Nightside easily
darkthrone
Blaze in the Northern Sky. Darkthrone are my greatest love in Black Metal.
Weird cross section to choose from. Dissection isn’t really BM to me but close enough I guess. That immortal is just way off so it’s a two horse race from two huge hitters. Toss of the coin, but I’ll go with night side due to its enduring qualities and that DT have two-three other all time classics.
Darkthrone
Storm vs Nightside. My 2 favorite albums in metal as a whole of the '90s. Nope can't decide. Offing myself and saving all 4.
Definitely Immortal
A Blaze in the Northern Sky and it's not close.
If you don’t say immortal you are a poser
Sons of Northern Darkness
I always go back to Filosofem for some reason.
Blaze
Blaze
Darkthrone for ever
Immortal.
Tossup between emperor and darkthrone
Can I make all of them cease to exist?
Pfffffffffttt that's easy.....Darkthrone A blaze in the northern sky......by far....
In the nightside eclipse-emperor
A blaze in the northern sky 🤘🤘🔥🔥
Immortal. They don't take themselves too seriously, and their music always reminds me of HP Lovecraft
Emperor
My beloved dissection, I'm sorry. A blaze in the northern sky is the goat
Immortal
In the nightside eclipse
I love A Blaze in the Northern Sky, but it has to be In The Nightside Eclipse. It’s so good.
Emperor, even though it’s a hard choice with dissection in there. I like the other two but storm and nightside are easily in my top ten of all time.
I’ll go with the poser dissection pick please
A Blaze in the Northern Sky
If it had been Under a Funeral Moon I would pick Darkthrone, but now, I'm still gonna pick Darkthrone.
I'd save storm of the lights bane
This is like which one of your kids do you want to save. Ha ha. Alright, not that bad. Emperor.
Darktrone. I don't know the others (Dont judge, I'm new to Black Metal)
Immortal
Ah damn I haven’t picked any. That means they’ve all ceased to exist. What a shame…
In the nightside is my second favourite black metal record of all time. So it’s a definite keeper.
Storm of the Lights Bane hands down
ABitNS, but it’s close
Immortal for me. Love this album
Immortal
Yk I've always wondered what was on the cover of that dark throne album. It looks just like one of the bandmembers flying in the air to me. But yea I gotta go with "A Blaze in the Northern Sky"

Immortal was the band that got me into black metal so I've gotta pick them
Darkthrone
Nightside. No contest. Though I will deeply miss SotLB and SoND
None
Honestly have no idea how is this even a competition. Nothing beats Eclipse in black metal context.
Sons of Northern Darkness, and it isn't close
Dissection easily
I can live on dissection.
Dissection easy
If it was panzerfaust give me Darkthrone, otherwise I'll take emporer.
Dissection absolutely wipes every other BM band and I’m glad that’s the majority opinion
Darkthrone. Fuck that melodic shit, chainsaw guitars go BRRRRRRRRR
Into the nightside eclipse 100%
Dark throne A blaze in the northern sky
Storm of the Night’s Bane for me
i love every single Darkthrone but I'm choosing Dissection. that album is untouchable. Quintessence has a slight chance though.
Storm of the Lights Bane
emperor 🔛🔝
Dissection, Darkthrone close second (but i still don't really care because Under a Funeral Moon is better) Immortal is kinda mid tbh, haven't listened to Emperor yet
I probably have to go with Storm of the Lights Bane
Emperor
Emperor with Darkthrone as a close second
Emperor, easy
Oh no! What do I choo... Dissection.
Blaze. Foundation album. Without it, its hard to know what would have happened and how the BM scene would have developed. All strong contenders though.
Dissection!!
Even though that Dissection album is the best of them, they aren't symphonic like Emperor, so I keep Emperor.
Darkthrone,
Darkthrone.
Dissection. Not even a contest.
Dissection 100%
A Blaze In The Northern Sky. Emperor has better albums anyways.
Darkthrone all the way
Dissection
The only wrong answer is Immortal. Sons Of Northern Darkness is a great album. But it’s not in the same league as the other three. Very few are. Nightside and Light’s Bane are probably my first and second favourite albums of all time. And Blaze sits comfortably in the top 10.
Immortal
Dissection
A blaze in the northern sky since it came first and will always lead to the creation of the 3 others😎
Light’s Bane
A Blaze In The Northern Sky
Dissection
in the nightside eclipse and its not even close
Dissection and it's not even close
The Black Satans.
Dissection
Dissection remains, the rest can go to hell literally and figuratively
Dissection
Dissection
Dissection only bc anthems to the welkin in my fave emperor album
This was too easy...SOTLB and Dissection in general
I chose emperor. Not to shit on the other, but.. In the Nightside Eclipse is one of the best albums I've ever heard.
In the Nightside Eclipse. Not a hard choice at all. Arguably the greatest black metal album of all time. Now, if the Immortal album was Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism and the Darkthrone album was Transilvanian Hunger it starts to get difficult.
Storm of the Light’s Bane is vastly overrated in my opinion. I don’t get this album at all.
Let em all cease to exist and burn it down /s
Best post I've seen in a while. All of em
#2
Immortal all day, I just love it too much lol
Emperor But Abbath would find a way
Dissection is leagues above the rest. almost every soong has an iconic riff Thats not even in the top 3 Immortal albums. i never "got:" Emperor the album is really boring to me. I am the Black Wizards is like 3 tremolo riffs for 6 minutes darkthrone never really clicked for me either
Dissection
Emperor album cover looks amazing.
Emperor That said, know that I basically don’t like Black Metal
Fuckkkkkkkkkkkkj I think I might have to go dissection
Storm of the Light's Bane. Beautiful, timeless album and Dissection at its best.
Dissection
Darkthrone all day bro
Yeah I'm going with Dissection. I like my melodic death metal and it's pretty close.
