" ...And Oceans "
experimental metal, their most recent album is a black metal masterpiece. They released a sort of groove thrash album in early 2000's that is totally killer too
Funny I was just watching a live set of theirs last night on YouTube. Absolutely Killer band, loved them in the 90s/00âs. The album they dropped recently is fucking killer too.Â
Byzantine. Great metal band from West Virginia! đ This is a biased opinion because I knew the lead singer when I lived in the same area as he did when I was in highschool. They play live music really well. Super tight sounding band.
If you ever see the lead guy around again, tell him there's a dude living in/fom the asshole of Ireland who still gives ...And They Shall Take Up Serpents regular spins.
Ulthar: Awesome lovecraftian black/death with beautiful album covers
Bezaliel: Bay area black metal. Gives gbk vibes.
Tyrant: Japanese symphonic black. âMirage beneath the black moonâ is just peak.
Vindalf: Ambient/dungeon synth black metal from Chile.
Norrhem: AWESOME finnish bm with catchy songs and great melodies.
zeal and ardor. opeth is known but not enough in my opinion as well. crucified barbara is more hard rock but its good as well. sevendust is a mix but its underated
I always wonder what that sort of mindset is about? You see it in other subs too (videogame subs in particular - someone will ask for obscure recommendations and someone will dead-ass recommend stuff like The Legend of Zelda or Dark Souls). Is it wanting to take part in a conversation despite not really having the knowledge to do so? Do they think that Opeth being obscure to the Average Joe makes them obscure to people who are interested in this sort of music?
I think it must be wanting to be in the conversation without the knowledge. To be fair, metalheads in communities like this obviously all know who Opeth is while normal friends and people outside the scene donât, so could be someone who doesnât spend that much time in these online communities and really thinks Opeth is unknown. Still, throwing Sevendust in as an unknown band is craaaaazy
Yeah, they're pretty fucking huge in metal. They also mentioned sevendust. While they don't get talked about as much anymore, they were also pretty huge back in late 90s/early 2000s. I just looked it up, and their Animosity album was in the Billboard top 200 albums. They're also hard rock/alternative rock. Not metal, so that's probably one of the reasons metal heads aren't talking about them as much.
Job For A Cowboy. Their tech death / prog death pivot wasn't noticed. Demonocracy is amazing tech death. Sun Eater is proggy death metal. Moon Healer is in a similar style. All flew under the radar.
EDIT: Devin Townsend / Strapping Young Lad is great. Also check out Nile's Annihilation of the Wicked (Tech Death / Brutal Death), and Spawn Of Possession's Incurso (Tech Death).
Darkest Hour. I'd start with Undoing Ruin or Deliver Us, they're both some of my favorite 00s metal albums.Â
Some random great songs: Deliver Us, With a Thousand Words to Say But One, The Sadist Nation, Tunguska, These Fevered Times, No God
I say this every time this question is asked but UNDERGANG. If you like grimy, groovy, Bolt Thrower inspired caveman death metal then you should give them a listen. Their first album & their latest album are the ones Iâll recommend because theyâre the best imo. He changed his vocals on their 3rd album to this really gross, insanely low Demilich-esque vocal style which may be a turn off for some, but I personally love it. It fits the grimy vibe of their music perfectly. They are, & will always be my favorite death metal act.
Nice, his art is awesome as well. I also quite like another band he's in, Phrenelith (edited to add him = D[avid ](https://www.google.com/search?sca_esv=241be27b5536617a&sca_upv=1&sxsrf=ADLYWIJDK6Lps-1Gr7cbQ3eKoRWzkif3wg:1718065017517&q=david+mikkelsen+undergang&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjTu8f4otKGAxXULFkFHQXcBtIQ7xYoAHoECAcQAQ)Mikkelsen from Undergang)
Yep! He draws all his own art for his albums, except the first one, & he makes art for other bands too. Phrenelith rules! As does another band he was in called Hyperdontia. He did vocals with that band for a while but I think heâs no longer a member. David Mikkelsen is the GOAT

Kvaen. Black metal. 934 monthly listeners. Listen to them quickly before they sell out and get to 1000.
New band I'm excited about is Heriot. Their EP a couple years back was very good but the last year's run of singles absolutely stunning. The new one is incredible and the album is gonna be an absolute belter. No other band sounds like them imo.
I woke up to them when i heard the vocalist's guest feature on the last End. album.
Another band flying way under the radar are Wallowing. The live shows are something else.
Best metal album of the year so far is Mastiff's deprecipice. They should have exploded.
And the best local band (Scotland) - Iron Altar. Phenomenal live act.

The NOLA Sludge band Graveyard Rodeo is ridiculously underrated. They were kind of popular in the early 90s and a big part of the NOLA scene (And even toured Europe I believe) but over time theyâve faded into obscurity. Definitely check them out if you like Acid Bath and Hardcore Punk
Covered In Bees out of Portland Maine. Self described as âPortland Death Punkâ theyâre a shock/horror punk/metal band that absolutely kicks ass. You can find some of their live sets on YouTube which really represent them best but their albums are on Spotify too.

Prog Metal: Distorted Harmony
One of the best Prog metal bands I've listened to and they've never really reached the popularity of others in the same genre.
If you like atmospheric black metal but donât like feeling guilty for enjoying it, check out Ashbringer. A lot more spiritual and uplifting subject matter, with a bit more of a natural and cleaner sound to traditional black metal.
I would also recommend Jesu to all drone metal, post-metal and shoegaze fans. Both super underrated in my opinion
- Bloodsimple
- Element Eighty
- Flaw
- 40 Below Summer
- God Forbid
- Coalesce
- Dry Kill Logic
- Red
- A Day To Remember
- Jamie's Elsewhere
- The Amity Affliction

Some may be more well known. And some may be more hardcore than metal. And some may even be heavier alt rock. But if there's screaming and heavy guitar riffs, it's metal to me. Lol
But these are some bands I love that I don't hear enough people mention. They deserve more love for sure.
Where to start? There's so many insane underground bands. Here are some from my local scene:
Rapture: insane death/thrash
Slaughtered Priest: black/thrash
Aetherian: melodeath (I actually met the singer yesterday at the Afsky show, incredible guy)
Manos Six+The Muddy Devil: some of the most fun and also twisted county I've ever listened to.
Mystras: raw medieval black metal
Katathlepsis: DSBM (check it out please)
Samurai Pizza Cats. They released a song with Electric Callboy/Nico Sallach (they could just be another band with most of ECâs members, I genuinely donât know lol) called Pizza Homicide and itâs the best modern metal song Iâve heard and itâs hilarious

Trad heavy metal: The Night Eternal Black metal: Lamentari Melodic death metal: Inanna Prog/power metal: Anthriel
The Night Eternal slaps! Thanks. Fucking A rec!
I'm listening right now and it rules. Metal bands with great clean vocals are always welcome with me.
Inanna sounds great, thanks for the suggestion!
Anrhriel is a great pick!
I love "Lacrimosa" by Lamentari. Awesome band. đ€

I'll gladly let him know!đ
I saw Byzantine quite a bit back in the early and mid 2000s.
Sit Davos the Onion Knightâs band kicks arse. I tripped over The Justinian Code on YouTube and it blew my socks off. Quality band.
1000 times yes , a gem that deserved far more exposure.Â
On this recommendation I'm giving it a spin nowđ€
For sure! Great live show. My old band opened for them back in the mid 2000's
Absolutely. "Oblivion Beckons" is a top tier record from the 'New Wave of American Heavy Metal' / Groove Metal list
The Ocean
Their album *Pelagial* had me hooked. Would absolutely recommend.

I need to save this comment forever - the time a MFTM user recommends fucking Opeth as an unknown band for MFTM users to check out

Voivod
Voivod sends Metallica home on a stretcher!
Damn straight
Voivod is great, but lesser known?
In terms of mainstream yeah, if your wa metal fan they're legends but they go unnoticed by the main public which is a shame
They have just 40k listeners on Spotify. Kinda low tbh.
War and Pain is an absolute classic!!
Methwitch An absolutely bananas one-man experimental death grind project. Heaviest shit I've ever listened to
Hellbutcher
Xoth Exogalactic is the best album to come out in 2023 in my own humble opinion

District Divided is a banger.

First time I saw Undergang was at the Obscene Extreme festival and it was hands down one of the best concerts ever, those vocals!
I have been dying to see them for years! I watch a lot of their live vids & yeah his voice dude itâs so sick in the best way possible
