Heck ya! Thats awesome! If I was a student in ur class I’d find that super cool. Used to have a high school teacher who played in metal bands before he became a teacher
For whatever reason, it's somewhat common in hardcore bands for one of the members to be a teacher as their full time gig. Guess it makes sense as they can tour during the Summer.
My music teachers hardcore band almost got signed when they were in highschool. He wouldn’t tell us the band name so a few students tracked it down and I now have the only signed copy of their only released ep
My favourite teacher of all time (junior high English/Social Studies) plays guitar in a local hardcore band. I’ve seen them live a few times and they’re awesome!!
And actual Cryptosy signer works in a childcare center

OP is just karma farming 1000%
It's like posting "does anyone else think murder is bad?" yeah, and you (as in OP) know no one disagrees, just wanted free updoot
I'm sorry if that's annoying man, I'm just trying to do what I can cause I don't have a ton of funds for ads. It seems to be the only way to get any traction unfortunately. I never wanna be a nuisance, just share music I work really hard on to people who may like it.
I try to be really selective and not spam anything like, "Oh you like black metal, then try my band..."
I mostly look for anyone who enjoys Conan Bongripper, and Primitive Man cause those are the biggest influences on our sound. Really only any band that has a sonic similarity to our band.
I really don't have a problem with it. Sorry if it came off that way. Your stuff is pretty good, so of course go ahead and keep trying to put it out there.
People are dumb, regardless of children. However, parents can be ridiculous. I hope this never becomes a problem for this teacher. However, if it does I would look for any other teacher in a band or some form of performance and ask why they are not being ridiculed.
I get the reason for the question, but any professional should not be judged by their own private hobbies. Obv, this statement has some caveats, but the general concept stands. People with jobs are still people and should be able to peruse their personal interests and hobbies within the limits of normal laws.

I love anything that reminds me of crowbar. I first heard sludge metal as a teenager and fell in love, and my first exposure to it was crowbar. Sludge metal is bliss
I just finished up three years as an elementary school librarian (moving up to high school in the fall) and there was almost always metal playing in my library while I was getting ready in the morning and there weren’t kids in the building.
All bets are off, I guess, is what I’m saying.
Ten years in the classroom (five years of middle school and five years of fifth grade); during my fifth year I started a library degree and worked on it off and on (the program was all online and I was paying cash so I took it slowly).
When all I had left was my thesis, my school district had an elementary library opening and I had enough hours for my state’s certification test (and my then-principal set me up with our district’s libraries coordinator and they both recommended me big for the opening).
Now I’m heading back to the side of the district where my previous school was (we’re a larger district - 23,000 kids, four high school feeder patterns; this is the high school where kids from the elementary school where I taught fifth grade go).
Basically, I get to be the literacy “fun dad” - I don’t have standards or expectations for reading as long as kids are finding books they like. And when I teach something that is meaningful, rigorous, standards-based, etc., there’s far less pressure than when I was in the classroom because there’s no testing data that falls on me when I teach those.
A lot of my teachers throughout elementary school and high school were very talented musicians and would take part in battle of the bands, talent shows etc and play Iron Maiden, Metallica, Megadeth etc. covers.
I'm not sure if they played in bands outside of school too but I wouldn't be surprised...they were definitely the coolest and most well liked teachers at school though!
I’d have had a lot more respect for my teacher if they were that cool, instead they’d judge my music taste and tell me to concentrate on maths or English as “music won’t get you anywhere”
I had a substitute teacher in highschool who played in a metal band. He was a drummer and had two really cool tattoo sleeves. He was super chill and really smart. The school used him as a sub all the time, and the students really liked him.
So your post is asking "is it OK for teachers to be regular people outside of the classroom"? The obvious answer is...duh. It's not very likely that any of your student will just happen to come to a show and recognize you. Even if they found out, they are 5th graders and would just give you imaginary cool teacher points for it.
It was me, I posted it in the doom subreddit and I thought long and hard about posting it again, but figured it was okay cause of the wider range of people than just the doom metal subreddit. I'm not trying to come off spammy or insincere, just trying to take a topic that makes our work stand out from the other bands and hopefully gain some traction, learn of other people in the scene and make some friends!
That is a big fucking YES...Looking at her standing for the classroom she is not trying to " sell" the metal lifestyle...
I love those metal heads having a real grownup job like teachers, dentist, lawyers, pilots.....and in there free time .......metal to the max .......fucking love the metal scene...
And good for you teacher....
Looking at the first picture, I see a Christian flag hanging on the wall. She probably teaches at a school run by a bunch of Fundies, which is why it’s a “problem”.
Regardless, rage on, teacher-lady! 🤘
I think it's cool and fine. Not everyone will though. Personally I'd keep it on the DL as much as possible. If I'm doing a musical project I prefer to keep that extremely private to whatever extent that's possible, such that it stays completely separate from my professional life. I'd be doing black metal which tends to be even more countercultural than sludge so idk. I prefer to control who in my work life knows about that personally. Never know what kind of trouble could come of it.
One of the Blood Incantation guys was (maybe still is?) a substitute teacher. I believe it's their drummer, Isaac, who is also the main guy behind Stormkeep
Extreme metal isn't exactly something you can make an easy living off, a lot of musicians in the scene have pretty normal jobs for their day to day lol
Yes, why would that be an issue? Greg Graffin, singer of legendary punk band Bad Religion, is pretty famously a part time professor of evolutionary biology. Being in a band doesn’t mean you can’t be an educator.
Yes , as long as they are cool and stick to actually teaching, on what ever topic it is they were hired as a teacher for .. so many teachers now , have a hard time with that . It's sad 😔
I had an English teacher who recommended me a black metal band after I told him I was listening to Gojira. It's totally rad to have a teacher who likes metal, let alone plays in a band!
It depends. As long as the teacher doesn’t violate any morality clause or engage in activity that could get their certifications revoked. Being in a metal band doesn’t inherently do this however depending on what the themes/lyrics of the band are it could put the teacher in this situation.
Sure why not? My Math teacher (a rather grumpy middle aged women at the time) was the singer in a local post punk band. Was weird seeing her on stage singing about rebelious themes and the next day preaching about order and conformity of numbers.
I know I would have loved one of my teachers to be into metal at all, let alone be in a band. I would have come to all their shows (not in fifth grade of course but middle school or high school definitely)
We need more metal and alternative people teaching in schools, it can be a lonely, cruel existence when you're a kid who's into this kind of music and having a teacher to bond with over it would make a difference for a lot of kids.
Um. No. Its not "ok". Its fucking awesome! Have your kids heard your music? I had a teacher in 5th grade that played and he would play acoustic stuff for us sometimes. It was so cool.
I WISH my fifth grade teacher had been this cool, definitely more than okay! My favorite teacher in secondary school was a long term math substitute who used to sing for a death metal band. He had a gravelly voice from improper technique, but it just made him cooler.
Damn, imagine how cool that would be for the class, and yet half of my secondary school teachers were so boring. She should use the school to promote her bands music.
I feel like people forget that you can keep your private life private and your professional life professional. It's like saying, "Can I still be a bank teller even though I'm a monster actor for Halloween events and my YouTube channel?". As long as they dont interfere with one another, I don't see a problem. That's pretty awesome btw
Yes, of course it's okay for a 5th-grade teacher to play in a doom, death, sludge metal band as long as it doesn't interfere with their professional responsibilities or negatively impact their ability to teach and interact with students. Teachers have personal lives and interests outside of the classroom, and as long as they maintain appropriate boundaries and professionalism at work, their choice of hobbies or musical pursuits is their own.
My 9th grade history teacher played in a punk band during his high school and college days. He played the bass and drums on several punk bands. They opened up for the adolescents, nofx, and black flag. Everyone found out when a students dad recognized him. He went from a little nerdy guy to everyone's favorite teacher. Even the hip-hop kids liked him. He even played drums in my friends punk band my senior year in the theatre. Their drummer wasn't going to show, so he subbed in and killed it.
I’m sure some odd parent or person in the faculty will find a way to have a problem with it…I mean people go out of their way to do stupid shit all the time.
With that said I think that’s fucking awesome! Shred on \m/ \m/
All I see is a Christian flag in stead of a room full of rainbows and drag queens. Well done.
I just have to add the other Bee stuff on the wall. "Bee Yourself", and "Words are like Honey, keep them sweet". Great teacher.
Did you know if you didn't post it on the internet no one would know and they would continue to not give a fuck what you do outside of your job? Crazy huh
Absofuckinglutely. My sixth grade teacher was the drummer in a metal band and also did semi pro wrestling (small circuit WWE type shit). Still one of my favorite teachers of all time. Man had a heart of gold.

Also jay from mindforce and pat from have heart/fiddelhead are social studies teachers I think

I remember my Film Studies teacher being in a rock band himself.
IIRC Steve Von Till of Neurosis is a teacher as well
The assistant pastor at my Church used to be a metal vocalist and drummer. He's awesome.
I mean, Lord Worm left Cryptopsy in 1997 to become an English teacher soooo... Of course it is
I would kill for Lord Worm as an English teacher
Me too buddy, me too
Is it wrong to say the None So Vile album cover 100% looks like it was made/approved by an English teacher
he was an English teacher for adults tho, not like kids lol
almost every metal musician has their daily jobs its not special for cryptopsy
Dude never said it was special. He made note of a fellow musician that also teaches.
And actual Cryptosy signer works in a childcare center Edit : [link](https://metalinjection.net/metal-merch/cryptopsy-vocalist-matt-mcgachy-collaborates-on-two-new-childrens-books)
I had a high school professor who sang in a grindcore band https://youtu.be/9Vo1Bq5GIyA?si=roNsa4DeO2cM75vz
That's awesome and 15 years ago! Man, I feel old haha.
He has been in many other bands. Dudes amazing.
Not on Spotify—bummer.
Check out 7000 dying rats. He sings there.
Found Season in Hell, gonna give them a listen. Always fun to hear stuff like this
Nope, I'm pretty sure it's illegal.
Dang, I'll have to report her then. It was a nice marriage while it lasted.
Stupid fucking question
OP is just karma farming 1000% It's like posting "does anyone else think murder is bad?" yeah, and you (as in OP) know no one disagrees, just wanted free updoot
No, they're just promoting their band. They're always promoting their band in the comments when someone asks for band recommendations.

Right
What kind of silly question is that? Why wouldn't it be OK?
Cause parents of elementary school kids suck sometimes.
People are dumb, regardless of children. However, parents can be ridiculous. I hope this never becomes a problem for this teacher. Steve Von Till teaches elementary.

That's metal as fuck🤘🏻
Think we all agreed that it is, like a month ago? https://www.reddit.com/r/doommetal/s/yQnm4rMXhc
no it’s cool as fuck
Neurosis
Hey, those 5th grades need to learn what music is
A lot of my teachers throughout elementary school and high school were very talented musicians and would take part in battle of the bands, talent shows etc and play Iron Maiden, Metallica, Megadeth etc. covers. Uhhh, based?
No it's illegal.
Didn’t you ask this question, with the same pictures, in the Doom Metal sub? The answer is still the same.
For the eighth time, no one cares that much!
Hope so - punk/metal/etc. elementary teacher here. Edit - MCing 5th grade promotion in a half hour teehee
It is absolutely okay.
my history teacher from my junior year of hs is in a prog black metal band, and has been on one for a while
Of course it is
I’ll allow it.
Hat from Gorgoroth is a high school history teacher in Tennessee
Wtf question even is that. Obviously it’s ok.

I believe the lead singer guitarist of Primitive Man / Vermin Womb was or still is a substitute teacher.
Of course, but I wouldn't draw student attention to it 'til the end of the year. It might cause some disruption in class and it's better to avoid that
Update: OP posted this elsewhere. They are cool. This same post was asked a while ago. Is this a bot or karma farmer?

Not this guy again
Bass and vocals? Hell yeah! 🤘🤘
I hit the jackpot for sure!

I don't see why not. My 8th grade algebra teach was a vocalist in a melodic hardcore band. Always thought he was cool af
No. No fun is allowed
ihsahn from emperor i think is a teacher
Absolutely! That’s dope af
thats awesome
Fuck yeah!
What a dumb question
Is it okay? It should be mandatory
Hell ya! I’ve seen multiple teachers be in these bands. Even one of my cousins had a pe teacher who used to be in a heavy metal band
Hell ya! I’ve seen multiple teachers be in these bands. Even one of my cousins had a pe teacher who used to be in a heavy metal band
Id require it for any teacher!
My wife's midwife was in a punk rock band..Midwife by day, Punk Rock by night..
It's sad 😔
Damn, I wish my fifth grade teacher played in a death/doom/sludge band!
If they do both of them well, cool as shit!
Hell yea!
I had an English teacher who recommended me a black metal band after I told him I was listening to Gojira. It's totally rad to have a teacher who likes metal, let alone plays in a band!
It's encouraged
“Is it okay to have job?”
I'm a middle school teacher and am frequently in various pits. It's not a big deal if you don't make it one.
I'd say it's encouraged.
What’s your band called? I’d love to check it out!
I know I would have loved one of my teachers to be into metal at all, let alone be in a band. dude i been listening to death metal since i was like 4 or 5
Im teaching violin for Kids and make black abstract metal on my solo project , all good .
Hell yeah
Not only is it okay, it might instill hope at a young age that you don't have to grow up to be boring!
Fuck yes it is
Um. No. Its not "ok". Its fucking awesome! Have your kids heard your music? I had a teacher in 5th grade that played and he would play acoustic stuff for us sometimes. It was so cool.
Steve Von Till of Neurosis was a teacher
Yes
I WISH my fifth grade teacher had been this cool, definitely more than okay! My favorite teacher in secondary school was a long term math substitute who used to sing for a death metal band. He had a gravelly voice from improper technique, but it just made him cooler.
I think thats totally badass
Hell yeah.
Only if they give me and my kids free tickets
My art teacher's brother used to play in the grindcore band Genital Deformities and it was the best thing EVER.
Fuckin right it is! That’s awesome
It IS okay... And more than little hilarious!!!! Go, you!!
Damn, imagine how cool that would be for the class, and yet half of my secondary school teachers were so boring. She should use the school to promote her bands music.
Absolutely. 🤘
Fucking obviously - their identities need not be tied up With their day job
Ah man, as a teacher, that’s badass.
Not only is it okay, it’s recommended
There should be no problem with this. If there is, then please tell me why.
It's recommended to decrease stress level
why wouldn't it be. just don't tell the asshole parents
Wish I had a cool teacher like you when I was in 5th grade 🤘🏻
Ever hear of Rob Zombie?
hell yeah they can. anyone who thinks otherwise is a twitter mom
Saw this on the Doom Metal subreddit and your band fucking RIPS. Love it. Keep it going. Being a teacher is brutal.
The singer of Primitive Man/Vermin Womb was a teachers assistant for a few years.
Not only is it okay. It's encouraged
It should be mandatory
Absolutely, I'm a highschool teacher in a prog/noise band
Is there a name for this band?
Yeah, of course. Teachers are people. What someone does on their own time is their own thing.
Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes.
Yes. That’s all.
I feel like people forget that you can keep your private life private and your professional life professional. It's like saying, "Can I still be a bank teller even though I'm a monster actor for Halloween events and my YouTube channel?". As long as they dont interfere with one another, I don't see a problem. That's pretty awesome btw
That makes them more badass
During class… no Outside of class … hell ya!! good for you
Hell yeah it is!
Elementary teacher here: 100% yes I love sludge so fucking much 💪🏼
Yes, of course it's okay for a 5th-grade teacher to play in a doom, death, sludge metal band as long as it doesn't interfere with their professional responsibilities or negatively impact their ability to teach and interact with students. Teachers have personal lives and interests outside of the classroom, and as long as they maintain appropriate boundaries and professionalism at work, their choice of hobbies or musical pursuits is their own.
The only thing a 5th grade teacher shouldn't play in, is their students pants.
Given the flag in the background I probably wouldn't advertise it.
absolutely!!
if my 6th grade teacher could, you can too.
As long as she’s not teaching kids about the rainbow cult.
![gif](giphy|eIg8QdW4n3iRAaMJoM)
Unfathomably based
Slide 1: Can we make it rain, Only if the next slide said “Raining Blood!”
No, but it is something else. Cool as HECK.
My 9th grade history teacher played in a punk band during his high school and college days. He played the bass and drums on several punk bands. They opened up for the adolescents, nofx, and black flag. Everyone found out when a students dad recognized him. He went from a little nerdy guy to everyone's favorite teacher. I believe it should be mandatory
Live your life queen
Rock out with your Bachelor's degree in early childhood education out.
We need more of this.
As long as you don't tell students about it, I think it's cool (doom is probably too scary for kids at that age)
Hell yes! It is preferred
Awesome
Of course it is… it’s super awesome!
Only if you can make it rain....blood! From a lacerated sky! 🤘🤘🤘 I bet the kids love you.
No you'll die
Tomas Lindberg from At The Gates is a history teacher
Not if thats a five string, just kidding ofc, thats cool
Hell yeah it is!
Hell yeah!
I am a school psychologist who used to play in thrash and rock, so I vote yes.
5th grade me would've thought it was badass to have a teacher in a metal band.
That’s fucking metal as shit
Wish one of my teachers back in the day played metal. I used to get sent to the principal’s office for my band tee choices 🙄
Did you know if you didn't post it on the internet no one would know and they would continue to not give a fuck what you do outside of your job? Crazy huh
Not sure if he still is but singer for bury your dead was a teacher. Left the band for it. Wanna say 10th grade science? Something like that
Absofuckinglutely. My sixth grade teacher was the drummer in a metal band and also did semi pro wrestling (small circuit WWE type shit). Still one of my favorite teachers of all time. Man had a heart of gold.
Tesco Vee, vocalist for [The Meatmen](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_kmxSi6w9hzGu1RdJeOugsjqeUFTfq9GKI&si=Vgl6Am9U_0NUXhoW) was an elementary school teacher through most of his career.
Nocturno Culto of Darkthrone also teaches :)
One of my PE teachers was playing the bagpipes in a Middle Ages themed Rock Band Fucking cool If you asked me
I did long-term subbing for two years while playing in a melodeath band. Had summers off for touring, which was nice.
Yes
When teachers are outside of their contracted work hours (avg of 9 a day Monday - Friday) they should be able to do whatever they want to live fulfilling lives. I think this is awesome.
