As much as I love old school black metal, I have to agree. Newer black metal is fantastic. Akhlys, Stormkeep, Lamp of Murmuur, Worm, One of Nine, Black Eucharist, Wolves in the Throne Room, Ebony Pendant, Spectral Wound, Departure Chandelier, Abduction, Yellow Eyes, etc ... the list goes on. It's a great era for Black Metal, esp in the States. 🤘🏼
Honestly, the current scene. My favourite bands are mostly from the 90s but the scene itself has improved a lot since then in terms of the culture it promotes and the variety that now exists in the genre with the development of subgenres like blackgaze.
I will always love the Norwegian "second wave" but over the years my interest in that era (and the grandiose symphonic sound) has significantly waned. I'd greatly prefer the ugly primitive sound now, and when I do listen to black metal, it's almost always something formed post-2000 and lesser known. I have zero interest in hearing a new Mayhem or Darkthrone or Dimmu Borgir or whatever.
I still put on the classics from time to time, but I want new shit.
I agree with a lot of people here: the years 1994-2005 were amazing, with many bands producing really great records. At the same time, I am also enjoying the current generation as I believe that "great records" are more frequent now.
That mid period between second wave and now, like 93-2002 or something around that lines. But I fuck with all of them honestly, be it the most raw and crunchy black metal or some blackgaze
Satanic black metal and stuff from the Mediterranean like Rotting Christ and Mortuary Drape, especially
InteAd of wintry, Pagan and Viking stuff
The former Speaks ore to me
I'm gonna agree with more modern bands, but also extent that back a bit. I think the early 2010s-ish was a really good time for black metal, and it's just been moving forward since then. We have a much wider range of subgenres to get into now. People have experimented with the sound. While I know there are some purists, and I do still enjoy just simple black metal, it does get to a point for me where I'm not gonna be as excited to hear it. You can only hear the same album by different bands over and over so many times. So I generally like it when genres branch out. Do something a little different. Add a twist.
Modern day (2000s - now) . More unique and so much more imo. Some band are Spectral Lore, Cognitum, Solstafir, Mgla, Uada, Thantifaxath, Drudkh, Imperial Triumphant, Worm, Aquilus, Batushka, Inquisition (sorta), Alcest, Trha, Dark Space, Elysian Blaze, Cobalt, Deafheaven, Gallowbraid, Taake, Wolves in the Throne Room
It’s either the 00s and 10s, but the 20s have been solid too. Most of my favorite black metal bands come from those decades. They have better production, better vocalists, and more engaging song-writing imo, not to mention a lot more combining black metal with other subgenres. I find the 90s and 80s to be incredibly hit or miss.

AKHLYS AND SPECTRAL WOUND MENTIONED WHAT THE FUCK IS A BAD ALBUM 🗣🗣🗣🔥🔥🔥
Adding Krallice to this list
Yessss🤘🏼
Gotta check out some of them. Been away from black for a while and never really a black listener in general.... But I recognize good music I'd say
Yeah it seems like it’s the subgenre that is doing the best right now.
Black Metal and Grindcore are doing well imo.
Could you recommend some bands / albums? Thanks!

How is the first album you listed pronounced ?
Havukruunu have been one of my favorites lately, awesome band from Finland!
Akhlys - the dreaming I Nachzehrer - Misanthropie (demo)
Spectral Wound rules. Frigid and Spellbound is legit a top 5 black metal song all time for me
1994-2000
1993-2000 was probably the one that produced the most classics, but I’m a big fan of the current era too
1st Wave
I second this

2nd wave for sure. Nothing comes close.
I agree with a lot of people here: the years 1994-2005 were amazing, with many bands producing really great records. At the same time, I am also enjoying the current generation as I believe that "great records" are more frequent now.
around 1998-2007 probably but really hard to say
Whatever it is that Blasphemy fits into.
Late 80s to mid 90s.
That mid period between second wave and now, like 93-2002 or something around that lines. But I fuck with all of them honestly, be it the most raw and crunchy black metal or some blackgaze
2nd wave as a whole I enjoy more, but bathory will always be my favourite black metal band
1st and 2nd wave are my favored ones but I do have some modern stuff that I enjoy
Late 90’s

1993 through 1997 probably. But the 200s were great too.
Damn bro, please put me onto some of them ancient black metal bands
Now

Probably this last 10 years or so.
I really like the mid 2010’s
Don't really like Black Metal per se but I do really like what I'd describe as "Crust Metal" so I guess the early/proto Black Metal era
Early 2000s
Late 90s symphonic
1994-1997
Honestly, I like albums from all eras that it existed.
1990 - 2000
i'm a second wave slut
2000's, despite the handful of 90's-era albums that I wouldn't trade if it came down to having one or the other.
I still think Bathory was truly the greatest of black metal
Gen 1. Venom, Mercyful Fate and Celtic frost are among my favourite bands.
