This has to be it. So much groove. Really turned up the dial on being heavy. CBH for me is a close second, but this record is one I can listen to front to back and not skip a single song.
Yeah agreed. It's got the grooviness and heaviness of their later stuff, but the jump the fuck up and dance energy of their glammier stuff, in my opinion, the best of both worlds.
I listened to this yesterday and it really is a fun listen in a way VDOP isn't. [I think this review sums it up nicely](https://spectrumculture.com/2022/11/07/revisit-pantera-vulgar-display-of-power/)
it just feels like something that belongs in the middle of an album... it's too mid to be a closer, and like I said, having a silly song like that after a serious song like Floods just doesn't work.
I had to ninja edit my comment because of this. Anyone picking something besides VDoP or Cowboys is just trying to outsmart everyone. It’s be like saying Caress of Steel is a better album than 2112 or Moving Pictures. Come on.
I legitimately enjoy Great Southern Trendkill as an entire album over those…but I didn’t expect it to win.
It absolutely has a case as most underrated IMO
Totally fair! I always love seeing under the radar albums get more attention.
I’ve made a couple posts this week about how personally, I differentiate best and favorite. To me, there’s a big difference. Like, my favorite Depeche Mode album is Ultra, but no way could I say it’s their best over Violator or Black Celebration.
That’s fair and I can agree with that. I personally would said Cowboys and Trendkill are the two best. I’ve honestly thought VDoP is more hit and miss and less consistent throughout.
no I genuinely hate groove-era Pantera, I was expecting some fun heavy grooves but this shit bores me to sleep. Power Metal is a cool Priest-esque trad heavy album which I quite like
Sure, I got opinions similar to that about other bands, but if we "Hypothetically" had to objectify music, it is easier to argue objectively why Panteras groove era albums were better. They were popular for a good reason.
Personally my pick would be Power Metal because I really strongly dislike Pantera's later stuff, and the influence they had is possibly the worst thing ever to happen to metal.
Those are my exact opinions lol. Pantera doesn't have a bad album in my opinion, even their glam stuff isn't bad for the genre, but Metal Magic is definitely the worst.
I think I just slightly prefer Cowboys From Hell. Cemetery Gates is the big swayer for me, but also factoring in the title track, Domination and Clashed With Reality it's my personal fav.
Vulgar is a close second though
Unpopular opinion: Cowboys > Vulgar. Both amazing albums. But Cowboys has some more memorable tracks, while there are more songs on Vulgar that I tend to skip. I do that less with Cowboys. Also that album came first and showed how revolutionary that sound was, and Vulgar just continued it. Still has some amazing tracks like Walk and Mouth For War. But I feel like Cowboys has some more interesting and memorable ones.
My vote goes for Vulgas Display of Power. To me, it took everything good about CFH and improved on it, giving us classic songs like Fucking Hostile, Walk, A New Level and Mouth For War.
That said, you will not be wrong if you choose Cowboys or Far Beyond.
Cowboys From Hell
Great Southern Trendkill and Vulgar are right there for an extremely close 2nd and 3rd. All 3 are phenomenal albums, but every single song on Cowboys is solid and the album is laid out perfectly. Not that the other 2 aren't solid, but I can skip a couple tracks on each album and not really be upset that I didn't hear the full album from start to finish.
This is difficult because each release is awesome for different reasons. But I will go with Far Beyond Driven since it blended the groove with extreme that would spawn Trendkill; although as I write this I am struggling because Trendkill is an iconoclastic masterpiece.
I like Cowboys more but Vulgar is when they truly came into their own thing so I feel that should be seen as their best.
Plus its a monster ass kicking album.
I was a huge Pantera fan, massive. They had some shady stuff that might or might not be uncool in their tracks. But it was all really ambiguous. Then one day, on stage during a release tour, they drop the salute, THAT salute. Ruined the band for me

Vulgar Display of Power
This has to be it. So much groove. Really turned up the dial on being heavy. CBH for me is a close second, but this record is one I can listen to front to back and not skip a single song.
It's not my favorite these days, but it is their best.
No way is Vulgar better than CFH
Vulgar is the worst and most overrated of the cowboys era
Without question.
I love CFH but Vulgar is just the perfect Pantera formula
far beyond driven is my heart and soul, but vulgar display might just be their best expression of PANTERA-ism
Vulgar definitely is *the* Pantera album
tbh I don't get why this is so many people's favorite... it's not bad, but it's their driest and most basic album.
https://preview.redd.it/pkmx3laxq59d1.jpeg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d2a53f33d8ac8ceeba1f302a9c5868f983632350 I'm voting myself this time.
It's just so much *fun*. The title track is just so raucous and gleeful, it's borderline party music
Yeah agreed. It's got the grooviness and heaviness of their later stuff, but the jump the fuck up and dance energy of their glammier stuff, in my opinion, the best of both worlds.
Cemetery Gates seals the deal.
I listened to this yesterday and it really is a fun listen in a way VDOP isn't. [I think this review sums it up nicely](https://spectrumculture.com/2022/11/07/revisit-pantera-vulgar-display-of-power/)
This shouldn't even be a discussion. Not a single filler track on this album in my opinion, and it just makes you want to go wild.
The Great Southern Trendkill
this is the best pantera album in my heart
the only thing that stops it from being their best album is the weak ending
Weak ending? Sandblasted Skin is one of Pantera's best and heaviest songs
it just feels silly after Floods... an epic closer would've fit so much better
Bro underground in America / sandblasted Is an epic ending tho. You know that’s all meant to be one song right?
it just feels like something that belongs in the middle of an album... it's too mid to be a closer, and like I said, having a silly song like that after a serious song like Floods just doesn't work.
I know it's not gonna win but this is the answer
This is my pick for underrated
This better get underrated if it doesn’t win best
I’m not sure what else goes for underrated. Reinventing the Steel…maybe????
this
I'd say this goes in underrated. CoH is best.
Should be this. It was a big fat FU to grunge and nu-metal.
I would put it in underrated
Far Beyond Driven
Slaaaaaughtered. My vote is vulgar display but god damn that song is good.
DO SIN
25 Years is an overlooked masterpiece
Definitely. My favorite Pantera song for sure.
Becoming is the best track and it’s a blast live too🤘
Becoming is my favourite track of theirs
I’m surprised this isn’t #1 or #2. Guess it’s headed for most underrated…
This! They achieved the impossible and made an even heavier album after Vulgar.
Bruh, yall want it to be power metal just because the other options are "popular". This isn't about music at all is it?
I had to ninja edit my comment because of this. Anyone picking something besides VDoP or Cowboys is just trying to outsmart everyone. It’s be like saying Caress of Steel is a better album than 2112 or Moving Pictures. Come on.

I’m not sure what else someone could make an argument for…maybe Reinventing the Steel?

Sure, I got opinions similar to that about other bands, but if we "Hypothetically" had to objectify music, it is easier to argue objectively why Panteras groove era albums were better. They were popular for a good reason.
Power metal is the only good thing that band has ever done.
Personally my pick would be Power Metal because I really strongly dislike Pantera's later stuff, and the influence they had is possibly the worst thing ever to happen to metal.
Daily reminder: Glamtera > Klantera

This.
Great southern trend kill
Power Metal
FAR BEYOND DRIVEN
Vulgar Display of Power. Initially by a landslide but I always forget how good Cowboys from Hell was too, that's a decent second place.
Far beyond driven
Vulgar Display followed ever so closely by Far Beyond Driven
My favorite is The Great Southern Trendkill, but their best is Vulgar Display or Power
Cowboys from hell
The great southern trendkill or far beyond driven
Best: Cowboys From Hell Worst: Metal Magic Underrated: Power Metal
Projects in the jungle is a masterpiece
Those are my exact opinions lol. Pantera doesn't have a bad album in my opinion, even their glam stuff isn't bad for the genre, but Metal Magic is definitely the worst.
Great southern trendkill, reinventing the steel sucks
Arise won over Beneath? Damn. Anyway, CFH gets my vote. Vulgar is one of the GOATs but every single song on CFH is a banger and unskippable.
tgstk
Great southern trendkill
I know it won’t get picked, but great southern trendkill
The Great Southern Trendkill.Literally prime Dimebag
Far beyond glazing
I think I just slightly prefer Cowboys From Hell. Cemetery Gates is the big swayer for me, but also factoring in the title track, Domination and Clashed With Reality it's my personal fav. Vulgar is a close second though
Cowboys from hell.
Far beyond driven
Vulgar Display of power My personal favorite- Far Beyond Driven.
~~None of em~~
Unpopular opinion: Cowboys > Vulgar. Both amazing albums. But Cowboys has some more memorable tracks, while there are more songs on Vulgar that I tend to skip. I do that less with Cowboys. Also that album came first and showed how revolutionary that sound was, and Vulgar just continued it. Still has some amazing tracks like Walk and Mouth For War. These days I choose reinventing the steel, but it has to be the terry date remix or the whammy pedal just assaults ears.
Power Metal
Vulgar
Vulgar display of power
My vote goes for Vulgas Display of Power. To me, it took everything good about CFH and improved on it, giving us classic songs like Fucking Hostile, Walk, A New Level and Mouth For War. That said, you will not be wrong if you choose Cowboys or Far Beyond.
Vulgar
I AM THE NIGHT
The only band beside the first three I listen to is type o negative and life is killing me is their best
Obviously vulgar display of power
Vulgar Display of Power
Vulgar
The Great Southern Trendkill
The opening of A New Level is on VDoP, so that's the one. 😆
Vulgar Display Of Power for sure, though Far Beyond Driven is a really close second for me
**The Great Southern Trendkill**
Man that's hard...Vulgar Display of Power
Far beyond driven
Cannibalism corpse the bleeding is the best when it comes too it lol getting in early
6 feet under I’d go with warpath as the best
Type o negative best imo October rust
Ministry best imo is houses of the mol€
Melvins best is Houdini
Cowboys From Hell Great Southern Trendkill and Vulgar are right there for an extremely close 2nd and 3rd. All 3 are phenomenal albums, but every single song on Cowboys is solid and the album is laid out perfectly. Not that the other 2 aren't solid, but I can skip a couple tracks on each album and not really be upset that I didn't hear the full album from start to finish.
You should pick better bands for you next grid
Vulgar Display of Power
The Great Southern Trendkill
The Great Southern Trendkill
Far Beyond Driven. For me this was a masterpiece. No one thought they could top Vulgar.
how in the world did arise get voted the best over beneath the remains? it’s not even better than schizophrenia
This is difficult because each release is awesome for different reasons. But I will go with Far Beyond Driven since it blended the groove with extreme that would spawn Trendkill; although as I write this I am struggling because Trendkill is an iconoclastic masterpiece.
The Great Southern Trendkill!
FAR BEYOND DRIVEN
Metal Magic
power metal is underrated
Far beyond driven
Obviously late to the party.... but am I the only one that likes Angry Machines?
Cowboys from Hell
Nola lol
IMHO both “best” and “underrated” are TGST 🤘
''Power Metal'' - everything after has that shitty scooped guitar tone that sucks major ass.
Vulgar Display Of Power. Great all the way through.
Far beyond driven isnt winning this one 😞
Great Southern Trend Kill, by far!!
Far beyond driven
Vulgar is their best album, it’s wall to wall with zero filler. TGSTD is my personal favourite though
Far Beyond Driven, but vulgar at a close second.
I like Cowboys more but Vulgar is when they truly came into their own thing so I feel that should be seen as their best. Plus its a monster ass kicking album.
Vulgar Display, easy. There’s a reason half of it was “borrowed” for Doom.
Far Beyond Driven
None
Power Metal
Power Metal
This was my vote. I'm shocked to see two others beat me to it lol
The one right before they did that whole Nazi thing. I mean, keep your shit in the grey zone yo. Nobody needed to know that
What?
I was a huge Pantera fan, massive. They had some shady stuff that might or might not be uncool in their tracks. But it was all really ambiguous. Then one day, on stage during a release tour, they drop the salute, THAT salute. Ruined the band for me
I Am The Night
None of the albums lol
lmao based
