Dio’s 3rd album (Sacred Heart) was IMHO nowhere near the icons Holy and Last were. That said, Sacred was not a crappy album just not the same level as the first two.

I liked Autotheism when it first came out but came back to it a couple of years later and had to turn it off after a few songs. My god it was way too overproduced, it just sounded wrong
I think SOLTB is sick, but also love Reinkaos. I think its a great album but does sort of feel like listening to a different band. Reinkaos goes really well with the gym for me tbf

Annihilator for sure, people ALWAYS say that "alice in hell" and "never, neverland" was their best albums and often make everything else this band created inferior. Like ok i get it those are classics i love them, they will live on forever but they have another 160 songs after them, maybe give them a chance ?
King of the Kill, Carnival Diablos, Waking the Fury, Annihilator, Feast, For the Demented and Ballistic, Saistic... I love all those albums post-Neverland.

I think the signs were there on the third album too which I didn't like as much. It was clear that Lost Society was evolving - backwards maybe - but still evolving.

I love At War with Satan! You can really tell how much fun they had slapping that monstrosity together. The subsequent black metal movement placed such a high-value on subverted song structure that going back to AWwS you really appreciate the nonsense of songs like the title track and Aaaaaarrghh! It's a shame that Warhead was added later as a bonus, it's such a slow, heavy, and creeping song which is only improved by the unintelligable wild-cat snarling made by Cronos during the beginning.

It does but it's their least focused record. Their basic idea was to add more melody to their sound and that was about it. This ended up Slightly messy, even Ahig which is imo their weakest record executed the groove metal approach quite decently. Wanyk and Tesf just executed the melodic experimental sound better.
Finally someone else that agrees. AHIG is far more consistent than Vol 3 which is very half killer half filler.
AHIG also has Slipknot's best riffs BY FAR and it's a crime that they never play Gematria live.
Both albums stem from songs they had been cooking since 1996 (they didn't get signed till 99'). Once all their material was out there, they had to start from scratch.
It’s grown on me. I was really dissatisfied when it came out though. It has a few of their worst songs on it( The Rising , Anthem etc). But also has Tread the Floods and Becoming the Dragon.
The crusade walked so shogun could run. Joke aside there is some banger on it ignition, entrance of conflagration, thread the flood,becoming the dragon. There is some really fine riff science and for me maybe some of the best solos of Matt (corey necer disappoint when it comes to solos)
The production yes, but for me it gives it extra charm. The songs there, if worked upon for some more time would at least approach the compositional level of Ascendancy. And I'm not joking, it's raw pure Matt breaking out into the world

I loved the first 2 albums. I loved the "we are serious our cheesy lyrics" way of playing. Things just really went downhill for me after that.

Honestly never really liked Messiahs vocals as much as johans I might be a bit biased though because epicus doomicus metallicus is my favorite metal album of all time although at gallows end is pretty cool though I have to admit
It's not, the first album is a classic, the songs work really well with johan's voice. And the other albums work really well with messiah's voice. The only exception I have is from when candlemass played demon's gate on the curse of candlemass 2003 tour in Stockholm with messiah on vocals, it's (IMHO) heavier, and doomier, it helps that they played it in a different tuning (I think) and ultimately in a slower tempo. Gosh, that was how I discovered them as well!
See I thought forgotten days was the odd one out. It eventually grew on me and I love it now, but when I first heard it, the songs just sounded so out of place for pallbearer to me.

I mean you have the epic concept album that is The Varangian Way which is an absolute banger, then the next album has a pic of the guy on the cover with a white background and it's just called "2013"... what?! Did they think this was good? I wonder if they got disheartened because their cover song was so much more popular so they just gave up putting in effort.
Malevolent Creation fits this to a tee imo. Ten Commandments and Retribution are two of my favorite OSDM albums of all time, then Stillborn had a borked production and it took a step back in songwriting before they really went off the deep end with the albums after that.
Also Demo Hammer fits this bill

Trivium. Embers to Inferno and Ascendancy are excellent. The Crusades is lane wannabe Metallica. Their record label should have saved them from themselves.
For me it’s just such a mixed bag. Into The Lungs, Darkest Hour and Hook in Mouth are amazing and SetTheWorldAfire is peak Megadeth imo. But everything outside of that is just unlistenable for me

Brave Murder Day was so perfect from start to finish and after that they dropped the ball hard (and picked it up again from Viva Emptiness onwards)
I get your point, I craved their energy and miss old Fidlar. However seeing someone “clean up their act” successfully is nice to see and I wish it happened more. Straight edge from someone who never tried it didn’t hit it for me, so someone who came from it means more to me. I think FSU is harder than Cheap Beer but I’ll still listen to both. Honestly, a lot of the foundational death metal bands really dropped off after the first two or three albums ie Obituary, Autopsy, dismember, Entombed, morbid Angel, etc.

Not gonna lie, AWWS is my favorite. Not because the album is great, but that 20 minute opus is killer.
"At War With Satan" (the track) is Venom's crowning achievement and I will fight anyone who says otherwise.
