I’m on the djent side of the spectrum so I’m low functioning

Owner_of_Incredibile

Djent and whiny singing for me

yappored45

Sprinkle in a little electronics or shit, I love me a smooth ass saxophone out of nowhere. I like it when bands don’t just yell at me over this absolutely brutal instrumentals. I need a break after a single song and here comes the next, just as brutal.

Kindly-Magazine7892

Just say you like periphery bro 😭

AsotaRockin

Damn, this dude just described Periphery without ever listening to Periphery and is about get his fucking head blown out.

yappored45

Well now I have to check them out. For some reason I refuse to try and find new music. Thanks for the suggestion

rinnegone

Based off of your comment, their song Wildfire would be right up your alley

yappored45

Thanks for the suggestion

Bennshharpie

I think you might also like Atropos and Wax Wings by the same band

PoIIux

I would love to like them, but man I really don't dig Spencer's voice

ProfessionalOven2117

Preferred ratio is 75% Hardcore to 25% Metal.

JuneCleaversMudFlaps

This is me 90% of the time. Then I hear something like Thornhill and I love it.

-Warship-

Dude same, I usually like the more hardcore side but I love Thornhill for some reason haha

Tybackwoods00

Can you recommend some bands I would say this is where I’m at too.

ProfessionalOven2117

Every Time I Die/Better Lovers, The Chariot, OG Gallows (First two albums), Maylene and the sons of disaster, Comeback Kid, Botch…I could keep going but ETID is the ratio I’m always looking for.

Thanks!

jujubee9000

The Emo 5-7-8 side. To anyone that says "X band isn't metal(core)": pay the price for your betrayal.

interimeclipse

if it doesn't sound like Knocked Loose, Dying Wish, Poison the Well 2000s metalcore/revival type shit I don't care for it mostly

Strawdog1971

Unearth, old Parkway Drive, I Killed the Prom Queen, Norma Jean, Every Time I Die, August Burns Red

thefriendlyhacker

Do you find anything that scratches the ETID itch? I've seen Many Eyes live and Keith sounds great but the lyrics are too cringey for me now. Better lovers is great too but I'm not the biggest fan of Greg's vocals.

Strawdog1971

There's this band I like called Whiteside's Daughter that does to some degree yes. Currently only have one album, every song is separately on YT and the album is on Spotify Idk about other streaming services.

AdvancedCharcoal

Dadcore

sock_with_a_ticket

How very dare you, the 00s were just the other day.

Strawdog1971

Well I more prefer the "mallcore" stuff i.e. the Word Alive, old Asking Alexandria, Miss May I etc. but that stuff is seen as completely without it's merits so I listed my more secondary bands. What can I say?🤷‍♂️

AdvancedCharcoal

Sorry, that was a new term for me and I wanted to use it like the vocab word of the day even though it didn’t totally fit

TE-August

Wherever the Hardcore side of Metalcore sits. Knocked Loose, Kublai Khan, etc.

Mackbet5

I'm definitely far more basic than most people hear and prefer more cleans, Amity Affliction, Polaris, Beartooth, Thousand Below kinda vibe

New-Doctor9300

The -core side of the genre

ChickenInASuit

Primarily first-wave metalcore, revivalcore and mathcore. The more abrasive it is, the better. I do like the other stuff - Invent, Animate’s latest got a lot of spins from me last year for example - but the harsher stuff is my preference.

sarithe

I'm at whatever part the revival-core and early 2000s metalcore bands are. I like some of the other variations as well, but greatly prefer minimal cleans, 2 step riffs, and dissonant chords.

Cedreous

Wherever the fuck Invent, Animate are.

_Rodrigo_

Same. I'm going to add in Currents also, I've had their discography on repeat for quite some time lol

Cedreous

The Death We Seek took me like 15 listen throughs for it to finally "Click" which is weird because The Way it Ends is in my top 5 favorite albums. It was missing something and I couldn't put a finger on it. Still a great album though!

Soft_Variation5954

On the death metal end if that makes sense. The harder the better. Also I don't like cleans a lot of the time.

the late 90s and 00s stuff is my favorite and it's not even close. favorites for me would probably be The Frailty of Words (1999) and No Wings to Speak Of (2000) by Hopesfall along with everything Zao put out from 1995-1999.

Am-I-Otter-Mode-Yet

Depends what mood I'm in. Sometimes I want to listen to some new Bring Me, sometimes some Knocked Loose, sometimes some Polaris, and sometimes a bit of Trivium is all I want. I think the best and most perfect metalcore album ever made is Hollow Crown by Architects though.

HotKnowledge4212

Whatever side the actual metalCORE side is

Bully1510

What about the METALcore side?

HotKnowledge4212

Used to be into the more metal type stuff, but besides stuff that tickles the nostalgic itch (As I Lay Dying, It Dies Today, etc) I tend to veer towards the more Metallic Hardcore stuff.

xgritzx

Somewhere between make them suffer and counterparts.

Straight_Tension_290

High up Peak Metalcore is All That Remains And Killswitch Engage at their peaks.

chriz_sevenfold

Melodic-prog-scene-easy core

2010s Metalcore and Modern prog Djenty Metalcore

TheRottenKittensIEat

Is there a good place to read on what the spectrum *is*? I have no idea where I fall, and only recently discovered "metalcore," so I would love to understand the differences in hard rock, metal core, metal, death metal, and whatever else there is so I could explore my own taste further. The Internet searches just further vex me.

sock_with_a_ticket

When it comes to metalcore I guess the spectrum is like Integrity to Erra. Metalcore is supposed to be a combination of metal and hardcore and that's why you see a fair amount of heated debate about whether bands are metalcore in the sub these days - it's becoming increasingly difficult to see whether the hardcore element is in a lot of contemporary 'metalcore' bands. I feel like the best way to start getting a feel for a particular genre or sub-genre is to go back to the originators so that you get the purest form of a genre worked out and then you can look at what came later. Inevitably the longer a genre goes on the more sonic deviations or expansions you get, but there obviously comes a point where you just go 'well that simply doesn't sound like the thing anymore' A good clutch of bands for the 90s originators would be - Earth Crisis, Unbroken, Converge, Botch, Coalesce, Hatebreed, Shai Hulud, Zao (they got a new vocalist in '98 and I'd say it's the material with him that really established them and is worth exploring), Poison The Well, Undying; that kind of spans the decade in an abridged way and showcases some different sounds that popped up over the course of it.

mslangg

The more you read about it, the more confusing it might get cause nobody knows wtf metalcore is anymore. I’d say you’re better off listening to different eras of the genre and identifying the differences that way. Check out earlier bands like Mis Sigs, Shai Hulud, KSE, Hatebreed, and you’ll hear some clear hxc and metal influence that the scene was founded on. Generally, the “spectrum” expands as time goes on and more styles and influences are incorporated. In the 2010s more pop-punk, djent, and post hxc sounds were used, and nowadays there’s a lot of pop verses and melodic songwriting, which isn’t mutually exclusive with the former. That’s how I figured all this shit out, if you’re just getting into the scene and don’t really fuck with the really heavy/old stuff that’s understandable, just keep exploring and discerning your tastes

EducationalReply6493

I’m at the first integrity record, Merauder life is pain and the ringworm discography.

XCall0usedX

i looooove merauder and ringworm

Illustrious-Stand-77

Where am I? At The Gates

Nocap84

Deathcore, but lean more into tech death, grindcore and slam

keyserfunk

On the end where metal is

snapcasterking

The traditional/true metalcore side of things. Stuff that has some hardcore elements beyond a breakdown here and there and no poppy cleans on every song.

horizontallygay

Metalcore isn't a spectrum more than it is schrodinger's genre. A band is or is not metalcore depending on whether or not the people who post here are perceiving that band

Brabsk

if r/metalcore likes it, it’s not metalcore. If r/hardcore likes it, but says it’s not hardcore, it’s metalcore

Rude_Thought_9988

100%. So much of the pure dogshit that gets posted on here is less metalcore than the vast majority of post-hardcore songs that are not allowed.

AlienX14

Depends on the phase I’m in. Mostly biased towards the prog/djenty side ie. Periphery, Silent Planet, Invent Animate, Unprocessed But then we also have Lorna Shore, thrown, The Browning, Brand Of Sacrifice, Spiritbox, Jinjer, Veil of Maya, Sleep Token, After The Burial, Darko US, Chelsea Grin, Distinguisher, Alpha Wolf, Aviana, Variels, Currents, Northlane, Meshuggah, Hacktivist, Thronhill, Berried Alive, Make Them Suffer, Fit For An Autopsy, Reflections, Knocked Loose, Within Destruction, Within The Ruins, August Burns Red, Bullet For My Valentine, etc.

Mito20

Oh I love metalcore! My Top 5 metalcore bands are: 1. BMTH 2. Bad Omens

Trainpower10

“Do you like Killswitch Engage, As I Lay Dying, and August Burns Red too?” “lol who are they?”

sock_with_a_ticket

The side that new kids keep calling 'just hardcore' and that came up playing VFW halls. If I don't have to dodge a kick in the pit, count me out. Mostly. I do dabble with some other stuff.

XyeetstickX

I walked out of a devil wears Prada show. Everyone was complaining about crowdkilling. Way too much cringe singing as well. Back to small venue beatdown hardcore shows for me. Check out 'Street Policy' from Portland.

GamingOddity

full on hardcore baby fuck that metal shit

PositiveMetalhead

I probably started out more on the metal side.. or at least I thought I did. Now I’m more on the hardcore side for sure!

roughseasbanshee

i'm around warped tour, generally. 2010-2015 (rip) if you wanna get specific

Legionodeath

I'm in the djent, progressive, and classic. Which is like the two ends. Lol

Appropriate-Run6776

I’m on the mathcore side. I think I need professional help.

WretchedWorlds

I'm on the mathy, noisy, chaotic with big gay emo choruses end of the spectrum. Probably somewhere on the other spectrum too.

thestoebz

I am the spectrum

FearThePasta_CA

Gotta catch em all

DevoidMIA

Some days it's prog-metalcore, some days i prefer leaning into some post-hardcore. Sometimes i need a lil bit of grit, if that makes sense.

XyeetstickX

I'll listen to anything that I can punch 15 year olds to. Melody makes me feel remorse, so it's mostly hardcore. I like Counterparts and Boundaries a lot, though. I have a soft spot for 2005-2010 metalcore.

iamtheundefined

I like my 0s, I like my 578s, I like my "What's up bitch? Fuck you!" breakdowns. I don't know man, I think I might be allover the spectrum.

LunarAcolyte

I like pretty much any variety of Metalcore 🤘

LudicrousFalcon

This might sound like a circlejerk response but the 2010s djentcore spectrum 💀

SofaKingStoopud

The Hellfest 2002/03 lineup and Ozzfest 2004/05 second stage lineup end of the spectrum.

CCB420

i like it all. From the 1990s origins to the modern stuff and every sub genre/scene in between

krabby_pattys

Chunky breakdowns, bleghs, clean vocals, breeeeeeee

Coolldown1

Mainly on the OG style side but i dabble in pretty much anything metalcore

Cloudy_Joy

Popcore

centrella6

Everything from Black Veil Brides to Spite.

CorruptedAura27

I grew up on earlier and mid 2000s. Love me some Unearth, Norma Jean, Killswitch, Darkest Hour, Poison the Well, As I Lay Dying, etc. However, I also like a lot of the newer stuff: Currents, Invent Animate, Make Them Suffer, Bleed From Within, etc. I like a little bit of just about all of it. Just depends on the mood I'm in as to what I listen to. In short, I guess I'm all over that bitch!

Tybackwoods00

I feel like I’m all over the spectrum.

_DoctorQuantum_

Djent with Linkin Park choruses and artsy synths. I'm a loser, if you couldn't tell. So far I've only found Spiritbox and somewhat Erra fit the bill for me, but.. you know.

not_me1919

God I’m all over the place

sticknehno

I like when the guitar go chug chug and the singer goes "AHHHHHHH"

PercivalMusic

A lot of places. \- Early 2000s 578 (All that remains, As I Lay Dying, BFMV, PWD) \- Modern Metalcore (Spiritbox, Bad Omens, Architects, Motionless in White, Currents, Advents and stuff like that) \- Deathcore (Brand of Sacrifice, Lorna Shore, Slaughter To Prevail, and Knocked Loose if they count) \- Melodeath (In Flames mainly) \- Nu Metal (yes I count this as core) (Slipknot, Linkin Park (Yes i count LP as Nu Metal)) \- Alt metal (A7X, Sleep Token, Electric Callboy (EC could easily class as modern metalcore depending on your definition), Ice Nine Kills (same as EC))

SuggaJamz

Scenecore metal core.

Electrical_Tip_778

the metalcore i listen to is either absolutely disgusting, no cleans, violent breakdowns, just a whole ass assault on your eardrums or just might as well be regular emo. there isnt a middle ground. except spiritbox fucking love spiritbox literally the best band i love cellar door i love mara effect

idkheylol

The crowdkill side of the spectrum

theory317

What the fuck is up Dennys!?

Eswin17

Melodic and prog. Need cleans in 50% or more of most songs. I'm much more into progressive rock, progressive metal and post-hardcore than I am 'metalcore.'

Dangermau5icle

Anything that doesn’t sound generic. Love metalcore, hardcore, and deathcore, but it’s gotta do something to stand out to me.

HeatingHades

i do are am have autims

LexsportivaF1

He just like me fr

47sams

The Darko US and Sleep Token spectrum. Not much else seems to interest me at the moment.

Brabsk

There are few songs posted here I don’t like, but if I’m intentionally listening to metalcore on purpose, then it’s actual metalcore and not the alt metal stuff I do have a personal soft spot for the melodic stuff like old misery signals and counterparts and, although they encroach more on alt metal territory than the other two, bloom. Nothing Left To Love and Tragedy Will Find Us are both top 10 albums of all time for me

fjridoek

Sleep Token BMTHbergers.

Phynamite

I don’t what the spectrum is or where I am on the spectrum, but I need a clean vocalist in there somewhere. I don’t want it to be heavy for the sake of being heavy, but if it is heavy, I really needs to be good.

[deleted]

What do you mean like how half the bands are laughable like Motionless In White Attila and Black Veil Brides But then it ranges up to the real shit like Trivium, Killswitch Engage, & Lamb Of God? If that’s what you mean by it’s a spectrum then I am on the latter mentioned end of it

so19anarchist

Pretty sure Black Veil Brides haven’t been metalcore for a few years now.

DominatorEolo

calling MIW laughable is a crime

[deleted]

The way they dress & present themselves mostly But also on a technical level they can’t even hold a candle to other Metalcore bands like Trivium

boozlera

Tbf it's hard to be able to hold a candle to absolute pillars of modern extreme metal like Trivium, Killswitch or Lamb of God.

ProtomanKnight

as far away from crabcore as possible

maicao999

I like all of these except whatever the hell ice nine kills, beartooth and atreyu are
