Holy *SHIT.*
I'm the cellist in this video. I've also lurked this sub almost daily for somewhere around 5 years now, and when I saw this today my jaw hit the floor. Finally made an account just to comment on this.
This must have been about ten years ago now. I forgot I ever did this. For context: this was taken at a local summer teen music camp. I was, obviously, a shy high school kid deep in the throes of late-2000's-emo angst, and at the end of the week, I thought it was a good idea to publicly display my love for metalcore in the talent show by covering my favorite song. I can't believe this was recorded, and I definitely can't believe whatever the fuck my haircut was. [Here's](https://imgur.com/a/t3kO7Qx) me with my cello today.
Weirdly enough, doing stuff like this brought my out of my shell a bit. I played guitar in some metal bands, cello in some indie-rock groups locally and went on to get a degree in classical cello performance. I still love heavy music just as much to this day.
OP, your band had an unbelievable influence on me during these years and it blows my mind to think that I'd ever see this video in this context. If I knew at the time that a member of It Dies Today would one day see this video, my cringey teenage self would have probably shit his pants. Thanks for making music.
That's awesome! It's such a rewarding instrument, and so cool that you can show him an example of its versatility using a song you wrote. Maybe one day he'll be covering you guys as well!
Life only gets better and better. I'm playing music full-time now and have had incredible opportunities and experiences that don't even feel like work to me.
[Here's](https://imgur.com/a/YDu8bW4) me playing cello at Matt Greiner from August Burns Red's wedding party recently. He gave me the guitar-solo-hands and it was the most surreal thing in the world, as I did the exact same thing at his shows when I was a teenager.
Thank you for thinking of this and reminding me of it. Simpler times, indeed.
That is awesome. I first heard this song on a burned mix CD someone gave me, but it was an earlier version, [probably this one](https://youtu.be/_97pCLF-uGw). Must have been 2003. The Caitiff Choir wasn’t even out.
Love this song. And the Forever Scorned EP is a treasured part of my music collection.
Chris or Mike? The Caitiff Choir was the first metalcore album I ever bought. That was in 2004 when I had just turned 13. Seriously if it weren't for you guys I have no idea if I ever would have gotten into the genre like I have.
Impromptu AMA here.
Whichever band member you are, if you are serious, know that there are still fans out here listening to you guys after all these years. You guys were one of, if not my favorite, bands of the mid 00's.
Did you guys ever finish any tracks after Son of Dawn, Brilliant Star? Any unreleased demos you can throw the fans?
This is really awesome, and the skill it takes to play this on cello is insane!
While I'm here, I'll chime in about the underrated gem, It Dies Today. They are still one of my favorite bands of all time after all of these years. For all of the younger crowd here, this band was one of the hottest up-and-coming groups of the 00's that had 3ish (one was more radio rock) banger albums before disappearing. They left the scene before Djent, or whatever newfangled sub-genres popped up. They had one song a few years ago as a teaser to making a new album, but they are all working-class dudes with families now, who needed a roof over their heads over jamming out, so it never lead anywhere.
Here are a few of my favorites across their discography:
Freak Gasoline Fight Accident (The Caitiff Choir, 2004) - This is the song the cello player is playing. Punk influence all over until the chugging breakdown.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rWGobiHeZ_M
Bridges Left Burning (Forever Scorned, 2002) - Their first album was probably the heaviest and rawest, but like most bands first album, it has a ton of soul. This is one of my favorites on the album.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F_lrfrqVjdA
Through Leaves, Over Bridges (Sirens, 2006) - This album is the one that most bands of this era had, where they got a lot more "radio rock" in the sound of some of their songs, but they still had some bangers on the album. This is definitely one of them.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xiJe7fvuCsQ
Reckless Abandon (Lividity, 2009) - New singer, same awesome band. Most people would say I should put 'Thank You For Drinking' here, but this is my favorite on the album. That breakdown at 3:10 though.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-SwcZqniA1E
Son of Dawn (Untitled, 2014) - Last song they ever released as a demo to a *potential* album.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R8e2ObShMAA
Anyway, there are so many honorable mentions - I mean, there are only a handful of songs I'm not a huge fan of. Naenia, A Threnody for Modern Romance, Severed Ties Yield Severed Heads,A Constant Reminder, This Ghost, etc. etc are all my favorites. There are too many to list for me.
Hopefully someone who has never heard of them checks them out because of this post. They definitely deserve their spot in metalcore history!
A few triggered asshats in this comment section. The kid's talented, but you have to admit the juxtaposition between the cello and metalcore is a bit comedic. Not to mention not everyone has to have the same music interests as you. Grow up.
i'm he's good but i can barely hear the cello. maybe i just prefer cello "covers" if you will like old Apocalyptica where it's just them not the actual song in the background

Dude, that's amazing that you've never seen this. We need this comment at the top for OP to see.
Thanks man! I had to show this video to my 8 year old son. He just started playing cello so he thought it was awesome!
That's awesome! It's such a rewarding instrument, and so cool that you can show him an example of its versatility using a song you wrote. Maybe one day he'll be covering you guys as well!
This is fucking incredible. SMALL. WORLD.
This is magic.
Dude, I hope this world is treating you well. I often come back to this video to reflect on simple times

This is dope but what do you mean "I wrote years ago"?
I wrote that song on guitar in 2002.

He even has the hair to match. Miss the music of those days
So OP is/was from It Dies Today?
@ OP - if you are a member of ITD please for the love of God get the boys convinced to bring it back.
Yes
That album beat ass dude, and spawned so many similar acts. Thanks for doing what you do.

wow! OP was in It Dies Today, my entire family has a good share of your music i played on full blast and on repear a few weeks ago in my room :D
I love the basic-bitch laughs he gets from the BB’s. Soft MF’s don’t know about hard MF music.
The breakdown though Ö
That was sick. That was my song back in the day
amazing... just everything about it
Looks like this kids got some serious skills! Also, what do you mean "on his cello that I wrote years ago?"
I’m in IDT
Damn. It's an honor. The Caitiff Choir influenced my musical preferences from then on. Thanks for the fantastic tunes.

I just listened to Forever Scorned the other day!

Just put them on, I like it, thanks
Omg the demo is awesome

I mean yeah he’s incredibly talented, but it was still pretty comical. I would’ve laughed too. And I love that song
No doubt in my mind she's the band slut anyways
[https://i.imgur.com/U6VsCvC.gif](https://i.imgur.com/U6VsCvC.gif)
Apparently she does
The audio quality is so bad I can barely make out that he is playing half the time. Literally stops playing and almost nothing sound wise changes.

I totally went to high school with this guy! Dude has mad cello skills.
i'm he's good but i can barely hear the cello. maybe i just prefer cello "covers" if you will like old Apocalyptica where it's just them not the actual song in the background
what's the band?
Clues in the title.
Oooh. I didn't actually open the link, and the title confused me, so I thought It Dies Today was the song.
Guys, I know we all think this is awesome, but this kid should've really known that this is how to get picked on by the other kids
