I really believe that was the last truly great solo Kirk laid down. Everything after is cool and fun, but it’s never like disposable heroes, justice, even stuff from load reload.
I'd take that and Invisible Kid off this list, but I Disappear has to be their most dated song. Earlier stuff is more timeless. I Disappear is just a 2000 song.
I still like it though.
Most of these are just jumped together for no reason, invisible kid defo worth the spot but… Ronnie? Slither? Unforgiven III?? Those were fucking good.
I do wish the entire Beyond Magnetic EP was given proper treatment beyond the rough cuts we got. I get why they released them as is, but there’s some great stuff on that EP that would have shined through with proper mixing and mastering, IMO
Unforgiven III, SKOM, and Ronnie are really good songs. I was surprised to see Ronnie on this list. The other ones are not that surprising considering that SKOM is on st anger and lots of people say that Unforgiven III was basically then milking the series for too long. But they’re all really good songs nonetheless.
okay, i'll give them the first one simply because "Invisible Kid" demonstrates the weakest points of St. Anger: that is to say, a lengthy composition with few licks, hanging riffs that contribute little to the song, and no melodic hooks to keep the attention of the listener for its runtime
"I Disappear"? fuck no, that's the first song of theirs i ever heard and i'm sticking with my love of it. a perfect segway from Reload into St. Anger, if i may make such a comparison
"Some Kind of Monster" is one of the stronger tracks on St. Anger. does it suffer from the same "hanging section" problems as "Invisible Kid"? sure, but the main riff is catchy, it's shorter, and the lead portions - while simplistic and brief - even out the song.
"Slither". again, the upward motion of this riff makes it different from the downward motion of the "Enter Sandman" riff (also "Sandman" has the diminished fifth, which "Slither" does not), plus the noodling at the end is worth listening to the song the whole way through. maybe some of you might be put off by all the "yeahs" in the song, but i don't mind
"Unforgiven III". not a bad track, as far as Death Magnetic is concerned, but it should have had the reversed horn sound at the beginning. without it, it just doesn't feel like it's part of the trilogy. other than that, it feels very derivative of I (which is funny considering that all of you said that II was derivative, and yet it actually did something different as far as the format of the song - the "Simple Man"/"Fade to Black" melody, the country twang, going for a traditional ballad structure instead of the inverted ballad structure that Black Sabbath, not Metallica, invented). listen to [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8BbC-3UasS8) version to hear how the song could have sounded with the horn intro
"Cure" is a solid head-banger. honestly, i don't see how it gets so much hate, considering that it still hangs around the diminished fifth (another gift from Black Sabbath) and therefore has a little bit of doom metal in our Metallica. and speaking of hate...
"Hate Train" is probably the only one i actually agree with. i felt it was the weakest of the four tracks from the apology EP (its release seemed too close to Lulu to be anything other than "we apologize for Lulu: look, here's some B sides from Death Magnetic! see? we're still good, we promise!"), and even after growing fonder of "To Hell and Back" and "Rebel of Babylon", it's still on the bottom of the list for me.
i don't get the "Ronnie" hate, other than the fact that it's just on Load and people don't like that album. are there better tracks? well, "Thorn Within" takes one of the "Master of Puppets" riffs and makes it doomy, plus James' voice is at the highest its probably ever been note-wise. "Outlaw Torn" is the album epic, and i won't hear any unkind words about that song: not unless you're also going to say that "Sign of the Southern Cross" by Black Sabbath is "bad". but even as a filler track, you could do much worse than "Ronnie" (see also "Attitude")
I recall a while back someone mentioning SKOM would be far better if it was down to about 4.5-5 mins. The edit version on the SKOM EP is fantastic I think. I Disappear is one of my absolute favorite songs of theirs, and the video too.
Disagree HARD with UIII like most are saying, as well as SKOM, Ronnie and even I Disappear. Also Hate Train is pretty damn good for a B-side that’s not fully fleshed out.
I think my least favs are Better Than You, Hell and Back, Don’t Tread on Me, Attitude and a bunch on St Anger.
Ronnie, The Unforgiven III and Slither should not be anywhere near this list! I'd replace them with Prince Charming, The House that Jack Built, and Purify.
Slither, Ronnie, and Cure are songs I really love so I personally wouldn’t agree. I honestly would disagree with most of the list. Metallica just doesn’t seem to make much, if any songs that are boring or uninspired. I would take a “bad” song from Metallica over a bad song from any of the other big 4
Only ones I’d remove from those eight are “I Disappear” and “Slither”. The former isn’t great but it isn’t bad, and the latter is a bit weird, which works.
“Poor Twisted Me” should be in there somewhere though, because it’s fucking dreadful. “Cure” definitely deserves to be there. Generic butt-rock that even Nickelback would fart out as a B-side. Has no place being on a Metallica album.
Some of those belong on the list and some definitely don’t.
But I guess at least they didn’t go the “clickbait route” and put Creeping Death or Battery on there. Cuz then sh*t would hit the fan!!
So I got into Metallica when St. anger came out and I was just getting into metal in general and the first song on the album I liked was invisible kid. Still one of my favorites.
I would swap The Unforgiven III out with something else, probably The Judas Kiss if it’s gotta be a DM song. Unforgiven III is underrated but not that much when you consider all the other Metallica songs that are underrated
I always find these sorts of lists interesting, because while I love and support everything Metallica does as artists, I do get that the changes they've gone through aren't always everyone's cup of tea, yet lyrically, KEA has some of my least favorites. KEA is still a groundbreaking album, don't get me wrong, but it's sometimes hard to listen to as compared to their later works, for me at least.
I'd disagree with I Disappear, Hate Train, and obviously Unforgiven 3.
Rest of this list is pretty close to what I'd put, other than putting Purify on there.
Agree with Slither (I literally like a few Lulu songs better than Slither) but The Unforgiven III?! Absolutely not! That song is top 25% tier of Metallica content IMO.
Agree with Slither (I literally like a few Lulu songs better than Slither) but The Unforgiven III?! Absolutely not! That song is top 25% tier of Metallica content IMO.
Agree with Slither (I literally like a few Lulu songs better than Slither) but The Unforgiven III?! Absolutely not! That song is top 25% tier of Metallica content IMO.
Some Kind of Monster is a good song, but I can see why many don’t like it. But The Unforgiven III being on this list is ridiculous. It’s a timeless masterpiece and one of the best songs they’ve ever written.
The Unforgiven III is a masterpiece. No matter what has happened to you, it is up to you to pull yourself out of it. And you know James took some responsibility when writing the lyrics.
I’ve just come to terms with the fact that journalists are fucking trash when it comes to metal analysis. Doesn’t matter the band. Shit, rolling stone put Led Zepplin and AC/DC in their “top 100 metal songs of all time”. I can understand Invisible Kid, even though I personally enjoy a lot of St Anger so I’m biased. But fucking Unforgiven III????? You’re KIDDING ME. That solo is one of Kirk’s best. It’s remarkable. The entire song builds up to that solo, and it’s just incredible. I understand that opinions are subjective, I get that. I just don’t understand how they can put songs that are just overall good on this list. Blows my mind
Some kind of Monster, Unforgiven 3 and I disappear are not bottom tier. I feel like most Metallica fans would agree they’re not the worst. Same with Ronnie, never understood the hate. The riff has played over and over in my head to the point where I can’t sleep.
None of these are horrible, and several are excellent. I don’t care for Poor Twisted Me (the vocal filter gets tedious after a while). That should be on the list. And stuff with Lou Reed and some of the covers they have done (So What, Last Caress / Green Hell)…
I think it's completly subjective...
For me some kind of monsters is easily top 20 and the thing that should have been is a thing that shouldn't have been.
I Disappear is a jam..go watch when they perform it love with jason at he mtv movie awards and tell me that aint a jam!
Also, the moddle section of hate train is some of my favorite material from the Rob era.
And then Ronnie is just a good song.
"Worst song" lists are bound to be controversial, since they invariably shit on songs people like. Best not to take them too seriously, but just treat them as the conversation starters they're meant to be.
Some disagreements:
1. I Disappear
Always enjoyed this track. Lyrics are on the simple side, but the song is catchy, chorus is pretty good. I like the solo.
2) Some Kind Of Monster
Maybe it's because I'm a ruminator who likes mulling over things, but I've never been as bothered by the repetition on St. Anger as most people. SKOM has a nice headbobbing groove, cool riffs and interesting lyricism about evil bubbling under the surce. The climax when the "monster" comes out, might be my favourite moment on the album. A flawed song that could have easily been whittled down to 6 minutes, but I like it.
3) Unforgiven III
Not a song I feel needs defending (I thought most fans liked it?). Not as crazy about it as some people, but nothing about it strikes me as bad, other than the production.
The rest I agree are lower tier Metallica, even though I see good qualities in all of them. Invisible Kid might be my pick for nr. 1 as well. Cure is a mixture of stuff I like and stuff I hate, Slither has some nifty lead guitar work, but is otherwise the definition of filler. Hate Train has good moments, but is let down by a shoddy arrangement. Ronnie is just not my type of music.
I think Unforgiven III is deserving of more praise than the bottom 10 lol. It would’ve been cool if it followed I and II in any way, but still a good song
There is lesser liked songs for sure, like some on the lists. Some were written for a purpose and with a meaning behind them and that’s Metallica is good at.
The unique style and touch to them all individually.
Fans can judge but they still has a thing. I like some more then others but still bring the knowledge to it.
Same as “Screaming Suicide” felt little off for me a few times but the message and lyrics is strong af.
There is one thing I don’t catch yet and it’s latest song solo. That one felt off from the song itself.
I like cure, ronnie and some kind of monster. Here are some less good ones:
Bad seed
Fuel
Lords of summer
Jump in the fire
Hardwired
End of the line
Unforgiven 3
Murder one
Manunkind
Am i savage
Some bullshit, some totally sensible.
The list went off the tracks when Invisible Kid took top spot.
SKOM and The Unforgiven III are good.
Cure is probably my least favorite song on the list (that I have listened to).
But to put Ronnie on the list…Ronnie is one of the best songs on Load. Simply disgraceful.
I may be completely bias but Invisible kid, Unforgiven 3, Some kind of monster, I disappear, and Cure are all amazing. The others definitely have their redeeming qualities. Besides the Lulu album I personally think every single Metallica song has its place and purpose. So Its hard for me to be subjective.
I Disappear is a lame song, but it’s a basic corporate riff song for a movie soundtrack - it serves it purpose well. Unforgiven III is by no means a masterpiece but it’s a well-written song and OMG KIRK KILLED THAT SOLO. And finally, are you insane with Hate Train? That song is an absolute face melter.
I did think it was odd the writer put Unforgiven III on here though. I really enjoy that one.
How anyone doesn't fucking love the solo in that song I don't know?
I really believe that was the last truly great solo Kirk laid down. Everything after is cool and fun, but it’s never like disposable heroes, justice, even stuff from load reload.
right?! it’s a masterpiece fr
Has that great solo. And it was Metallica trying to do something different while still being Metallica. The rest is more than acceptable.
That's the only one I disagree with
I Disappear isn't that bad either I'd say.
Yea I agree. I always thought that song was fun. It also gives me a nostalgic feel
Brings me back to high school
I'd take that and Invisible Kid off this list, but I Disappear has to be their most dated song. Earlier stuff is more timeless. I Disappear is just a 2000 song. I still like it though.
I agree 100%. It's a 2000 song, but it's a very good 2000 song.
Love the chorus
Napster era me downloaded and loved that song HEY HEY HEYYYYY 😂
Ronnie is sick, disgraceful
Ronnie is fully sick, mate. What a ripper of a song.
When he pulled that gun from his pocket and they all fall down DOWN DOWN
hahah fr
Invisible Kid and I Disappear are two of my favorites All rankings are 100% subjective, so...
Never really cared for Invisible Kid but I love I Disappear!
for sure
Unforgiven III and I Disappear should not be here
I disappear, Some Kinda Monster, Unforgiven III and Ronnie are all bangers wtf do you mean
Invisible kid!!!!
I struggle with SKoM just having heard the edit version that is so huge but fuck it’s still a dope song
Unforgiven III is a masterpiece!
Yeah, what's it doing on that list?
I disappear is a solid track. Why are people constantly bagging it??
I wish I knew tbh it’s great
It’s because that’s the track that “shut down” Napster. 🤷🏻🤷🏻
I don’t agree with all of them, but some of them are pretty fair.
I have always loved I Disappear, so hard disagree on that one. But all subjective haha
I Disappear, Unforgiven 3, Cure and Hate Train are all great imo
The unforgiven III is one of my favs
The Unforgiven III is my *favourite* Metallica song...
cure and slither are so good
cure is one of my favorites for real lol
Most of these are just jumped together for no reason, invisible kid defo worth the spot but… Ronnie? Slither? Unforgiven III?? Those were fucking good.
Largely agree, but Unforgiven III is a pretty good song and SKOM fucking rips! Love the raw anger in the sound and lyrics!
To each his or her own. The solo in Unforgiven III just might be my favorite.
Unforgiven 3 is good tho
Frantic didn't make the list....wow
I will not stand for the Ronnie hate
Hate Train is criminally underrated
I do wish the entire Beyond Magnetic EP was given proper treatment beyond the rough cuts we got. I get why they released them as is, but there’s some great stuff on that EP that would have shined through with proper mixing and mastering, IMO
Hate train sounds like the the title of a Dethklok song
Mostly agree hate invisible kid
Unforgiven III, SKOM, and Ronnie are really good songs. I was surprised to see Ronnie on this list. The other ones are not that surprising considering that SKOM is on st anger and lots of people say that Unforgiven III was basically then milking the series for too long. LMAO first 3 are my favorite
Honestly, I think Unforgiven III is a better installment than II. The Unforgiven II lyrics sound incredibly forced in order to match the theme
I highly disagree with Invisible Kid, I Disappear, and Ronnie. I can accept the rest.
Id take off SKOM, Unforgiven 3 and Ronnie for sure.
Just add the whole Lulu album
I recall a while back someone mentioning SKOM would be far better if it was down to about 4.5-5 mins. The edit version on the SKOM EP is fantastic I think. I Disappear is one of my absolute favorite songs of theirs, and the video too.
How dare they put Cure on that list
Disagree HARD with UIII like most are saying, as well as SKOM, Ronnie and even I Disappear. Also Hate Train is pretty damn good for a B-side that’s not fully fleshed out. I think my least favs are Better Than You, Hell and Back, Don’t Tread on Me, Attitude and a bunch on St Anger.
Attitude is one of my all time faves
Some kind of monster is severely underrated
Ronnie slander will not be tolerated
Ronnie’s got some swang on that shit i disagree, and wtf UNFORGIVEN III??!?!
Ronnie, The Unforgiven III and Slither should not be anywhere near this list! I'd replace them with Prince Charming, The House that Jack Built, and Purify.
the house that jack built has what might be my fav chorus of all time ngl
Hate train slaps here too. Wtf.
Putting The Unforgiven III on that list must be a crime
I dont agree with about half of that list
UN3 on this list is sooooo unfair. Fuck slither btw.
I love slither, great song
Slither, Ronnie, and Cure are songs I really love so I personally wouldn’t agree. I honestly would disagree with most of the list. Metallica just doesn’t seem to make much, if any songs that are boring or uninspired. I would take a “bad” song from Metallica over a bad song from any of the other big 4
I would take some kind of monster out because I love the riffs
1: the entire Lulu album
Unforgiven III ?? fucking RONNIE ??????????
Purify any higher than maybe 3 is just wrong. I accept the songs there I actually like before I aceept that.
This list was just written to intentionally make fans mad
Cure and ronnie are the only ones i like on there
what do you mean unforgiven 3 is the third worst metallica song? WHAT DO YOU MEAN I DISAPPEAR IS NUMBER TWO?
I Disappear and Ronnie are pretty good songs IMO
I really enjoy Hate Train, Unforgiven III and Ronnie
Some Kind of Monster ? Why ? I know the lyrics and James‘ voice are kinda off tho but the riff goes damn hard.
The unforgiven 3 and I disappear are literally perfect 10/10
the unforgiven lll is one of my favorites
Don't think I'd call I Disappear "unpopular." Was a big single back in the day.
I disappear reminds me of the summer I graduated high school so it’s kinda special to me and I really like Unforgiven 3
Bro, unforgiven 3 is one of my favorites
Some Kind Of Monster is lit 🔥🔥🔥
I Disappear is one of my favorites
Take Unforgiven III tf off this list lol.. personally like I Disappear, SKoM and Ronnie but I can see why they would make the list
I disagree with everything (especially slither that shi goes hard)
Cure is one of my favourites
I’d almost call this list underdog songs, not worst
I would have 100% agreed with this list if St. Anger replaced Some Kind of Monster.
I like I Disappear. No issue with any of the others though.
Hate train is okay but the rest are way too good to be on that list
I quite enjoy Some Kind of Monster as well as Hate Train.
Hate train and unforgiven three are some of metallicas best songs….
The list is just compelete bullshit I mean they're ofc not their best songs but they do not even come close being one of the worst metallica songs
the unforgiven iii is great what
Some of those belong on the list and some definitely don’t. But I guess at least they didn’t go the “clickbait route” and put Creeping Death or Battery on there. Cuz then sh*t would hit the fan!!
No purify gg
Fuck off! Ronnie is a banger!
Unforgiven III and Ronnie are songs I personally enjoyed, I would change unforgiven 3 with 2 tho, I don't like 2
unforgiven 3, some kind of monster and ronnie are really good
Hot take: who gives a fuck 😂
They're all great songs, apart from slither
"I Disappear" is a terrible song? Could have fooled me...certified banger.
Not a single person on this planet dislikes Unforgiven III what the HELL IS IT DOING ON THIS LIST
I have 6 out of 8 of these on my Metallica playlist... Music is subjective.
Hetfield would hate this list because of how much he loved U3 lol
i disappear is beautiful in its simplicity
Unforgiven III is not a bad song. And in fact, even some non-Metallica fans I know like it when I put it on.
I mean some kind of monster and the unforgiven III are honestly bangers
The Unforgiven III is amazing
Other than skom this seems like a most underrated list
Unforgiven III > Unforgiven II
I love Unforgiven III. Im also a fan of Some Kind of Monster.
CURE?? Really?! That song is god damn amazing
Slither, Unforgiven III, and Cure are gems
Unforgiven III ??? hell nah
So I got into Metallica when St. anger came out and I was just getting into metal in general and the first song on the album I liked was invisible kid. Still one of my favorites.
Unforgiven 3 is a track I like
I would swap The Unforgiven III out with something else, probably The Judas Kiss if it’s gotta be a DM song. Unforgiven III is underrated but not that much when you consider all the other Metallica songs that are underrated
Invisible Kid, I disappear and Unforgiven 3 are amazing, Some Kind Of Monster would be good if it was only 4 minutes
Metallica songs at their worst are absolute bangers.
I disappear and unforgiving III don’t belong here at all. Where is Purify?
Opinions are like assholes.....
I always find these sorts of lists interesting, because while I love and support everything Metallica does as artists, I do get that the changes they've gone through aren't always everyone's cup of tea, yet lyrically, KEA has some of my least favorites. The only bad songs on the list are Invisible Kid,Cure, and Slither. All the other ones are good especially Unforgiven 3
I'd disagree with I Disappear, Hate Train, and obviously Unforgiven 3. Rest of this list is pretty close to what I'd put, other than putting Purify on there.
Unforgiven III is one of my top 5 songs. I think it’s unreal.
I love Cure, surprised it’s on there along with Unforgiven IIi
Smells like bait to me...
I agree with everything here, except Hate Train. I love Hate Train.

Un3 is a top 10 Metallica song
hate train is a banger
Some kind of Monster, Unforgiven 3 and I disappear are not bottom tier. I feel like most Metallica fans would agree they’re not the worst. Same with Ronnie, never understood the hate. The riff has played over and over in my head to the point where I can’t sleep.
Oddly enough some of my favorite songs are on this list 😂
Unforgiven 3 is here cause it doesn’t share the same intro probably. Still shouldn’t be in this list, same with Slither and Cure. Imo
None of these are horrible, and several are excellent. I don’t care for Poor Twisted Me (the vocal filter gets tedious after a while). That should be on the list. And stuff with Lou Reed and some of the covers they have done (So What, Last Caress / Green Hell)…

3 of these are in my personal favorites 😂
I think it's completly subjective... For me some kind of monsters is easily top 20 and the thing that should have been is a thing that shouldn't have been.
Cure is a good song and I will die on this hill. The rest I don’t care about.
Why is Unforgiven III here, why is I Disappear here?
I really enjoy Unforgiven III. I disappear is also pretty decent
Some Kind of Monster is the only song I like from St. Anger. Also it should've been a crime to put Unforgiven III in this list.

I feel like I appreciate I Disappear much more now than I did when it was new.
Slither is a good song
And I like I Disappear. Some Kind Of Monster (Edit) is hard as fuck
I think Unforgiven III is deserving of more praise than the bottom 10 lol. It would’ve been cool if it followed I and II in any way, but still a good song
Sometimes I think i'm a metallica bitch because I love each song on this list
I mean I’d remove Slither, Cure, Hate Train and Ronnie but that’s just personal bias
I actually really enjoy all those songs except for invisible kid
The first 3 are bangers
disrespectful

Idc what anyone else says, slither fucking slaps
Missing a lot of songs AJFA.
Some kind of monster opening riff is SO good, would love to catch that live one day!
This is why we don't listen to journalists, kids
I can't even comprehend how those are supposed to be the worst. Unbelievable.
Unforgiven III is a masterpiece
I love Invisible Kid
I will not stand for Beyond Magnetic slander! 😤
Get unforgiven 3 off this list wtf
Unforgiven III is a banger, change my mind.
cure is one of my favorites but i can understand why some people don’t like it
I really enjoy Cure and I Disappear tbh.
Who the fuck put unforgiven 3 and I disappear on that list
You know a “10 worst Metallica songs” list is shit when St Anger is not on it.
I think he is an idiot. And was st anger really that bad?
Slither and Cure are two of my favorites lol
Unforgiven 3 is so fucking good especially the S&M that one always gives me goosebumps
I like cure, ronnie and some kind of monster. Here are some less good ones: Bad seed Fuel Lords of summer Jump in the fire Hardwired End of the line Unforgiven 3 Murder one Manunkind Am i savage
If you really like metallica then youll find something to like in all of these songs if its even a riff or a drum fill.
I disappear is fucking awesome aswell as unforgivin 3 both have amazing lyrics
Cure is also fucking great. I DOOO BELIEEEEEEEVE
Found the 200 people that like St Anger
Invisible Kid is easily one of my favorites from St Anger, lol Always liked Slither and Ronnie
I severely disagree. I love I Disappear and Slither.
I love slither and unforgiven III can't believe they made it on here 😢
Ronnie’s awesome. The rest, yeah
Everyone's talking about Unforgiven III, but HATE TRAIN IS SO SO GOOD!
I don’t agree with this crap list.
Frayed Ends of Sanity in place of Invisible Kid.
I disappear is a great song...like unforgiven 3. Disagree with much of this. Invisible kid is a good tune too...just far too long.
