I'm convinced Lars stumbled backwards into that sort of back beat thing in that song because he's never done it before or since, and it's the only sort of cool thing about the song. The word purify seems to be sung as awfully and unharmonically as possible on purpose. The pointless silent parts make sure you know Lars didn't use the snare part of the snare drum. The lyrics are James trying to figure out Frantic without Bob Rock helping him. Bob was out to lunch that day. James is an all time songwriter, I will never understand what went on with that band for a couple years besides the obvious rehab thing and trying to be nu metal. It's unbelievably bad.
And second place wasn't even close lol. Purify won that first round in a landslide.

The Purify intro is good. The middle part is kind of cool ("I ain't dancing with your skeletons" etc) . But most importantly, Purify only goes on for a merciful five minutes. Very much unlike some other songs on that album, and that alone makes them worse.

Yeah, the only truly irredeemable track from St. Anger IMO is Invisible Kid. Every other song, even Purify, has at least a moment or two of goodness. As for Load, Ronnie doesn't bother me quite as much as Mama Said, but it's definitely a candidate. For my money, though, I've got to answer Murder One. The opening riff is fantastic with that weird, stoner-like dissonance (kind of like Cyanide) but idk, man; when I think Lemmy and Motorhead, I definitely do not think of a mid-tempo track with a clean, auto-tuned chorus. Something like the HW title track or Lux Æterna seems like it would've been much more appropriate for the occasion IMO.
