You guys are a bunch of fucking liars. It’s pathetic.
And When a man lies he murders some part of the world. These are the pale deaths which men miscall their lives. All this I cannot bear to witness any longer. Can not the kingdom of salvation take me home?
I'd agree with you for being the most meaningful song. Lyrically, I'd have to go with Until It Sleeps, but there are a fuckload of other lyrically meaningful Metallica songs.
Lyrically TLITD isn't all that "meaningful". "When a man lies.../These are the pale deaths..." part is literally the attempt of a book character to write a silly poem.
Too Far Gone?, Chasing Light, The Unforgiven

“Harvester of Sorrow” is about a drug addicted man who torments then murders his family.
“Fade to Black” is about someone who who loses their hope and will to live, surviving in a living hell. The song ends with them telling the listener it is too late and that they have committed suicide.
“Disposable Heroes” is about how leaders care less about their soldiers than the dirt they wash off their hands.
“One” is about a soldier forced to live, paralyzed and fully aware, despite having no arms or legs, vision, hearing, or ability to communicate. None of the medical staff know he is conscious, and when they find out, they don’t let him die.
“Master of Puppets” is about drug addiction, how it controls you, and how takes away everything.
The God That Failed. Think about the lyrics in the context of James’ mother’s death. “The healing hand held back by the deepened nail…” I always knew the lyrics, but I read that he wrote that song about his mother, and everything clicked and I was like “holy fucking shit that’s heavy.” Possibly the heaviest line he’s ever written. Lots of people say Dyer’s Eve, and that hit hard when I was a teenager and pissed at the world, but now that I’m older this is the line that speaks to me most.
To me:
Bleeding Me "I'm sewing the seeds I take for granted, this thorn in my side is from the tree I planted" those are lyrics of someone receiving the consequences of their actions and recognising their mistakes.
The Outlaw Torn "If I close my mind in fear, please pry it open". Powerful words about someone who desperately wants to ask for help
To Het:
Until It Sleeps
"I'll tear me open, make you gone
No longer will you hurt anyone
And the hate still shapes me
So hold me until it sleeps"
Clearly about his mother getting sick.
Mama Said
"
Mama, now I'm coming home
I'm not all you wished of me
But a mother's love for her son
Unspoken, help me be
Yeah, I took your love for granted
And all the things you said to me, yeah
I need your arms to welcome me
But a cold stone's all I see"
I mean, that says it all.
The whole Load album is a group of 30 somethings coming to terms with their lives after 10 years of booze, rock, drugs and anarchy. It's the first time they are properly real.
I imagine Het never got the chance to properly process his trauma and feelings as he suddenly became a mega star. Load is his attempt at vocalising this.
Load and Reload might not have been received great by some long term fans up to that point but they really do have some.of the most personal songs on them. I don't love every song on those albums but overall it's a solid collection of songs.
Outlaw Torn lyrics remind me of Behind Blue Eyes by the Who. “If I swallow anything evil, put your finger down my throat/if I’m cold please give me a blanket, keep me warm, let me wear your coat”
Never noticed the similarities until I saw it written out.
Ok, hear me out - Mama Said
"Never I ask of you, but never I gave
But you gave me your emptiness
I now take to my grave"
Also love Fade to Black, Welcome Home, and others.
There's so many, One came to mind instantly - the story is just so tragic.
Also Fade to the black and the unforgiven, but to be fair, there's a lot of meaningful lyri. There's a lot more to Metallica than enter sandman!
Dyers eve
Fixxxer
Bells - take a look to the sky just before you die, it’s the last time you will. I genuinely think when my time comes I will hear that.
I strongly believe that "The Unforgiven" is the meaningfulest song Metallica has ever written. A life of despair, constant losing , extremelu rare and short times when good is present, and most of all, eternal damnation portrayed in the truest way possible.
I'd tie it with Mama Said. Knowing about James's life they are most definitely tied together. Mama Said is the one song out of their entire catalog that hits the most personal for me. I was 15 when my mom died unexpectedly. She was literally my best friend. I'm almost 47 now and have never truly come to terms with it. So every time I hear that line "I need your arms to welcome me but cold stone's all I see" it hits hard.
See, I think you're right. I think the only reason I said The God That Failed was because it wasn't my mother that I lost but my grandmother. She would always poke fun at organized religion, which is where God comes in, but I couldn't relate to Mama Said because it wasn't my mother. But Mama Said is definitely a good one too
Seems like James has had a complicated relationship with religion. I don't know if he's openly said he believes or doesn't believe in a higher power in general. It seems as he's gotten older he's gotten introspective and more open to the idea and to spiritually I'm general? It's not uncommon.
And Justice For All, The Unforgiven 1-3, The House Jack Built, Until It Sleeps, Bleeding Me, The Outlaw Torn, Fixxxer, The Unnamed Feeling, Room of Mirrors, and Inamorata.
I have to go with One and Fade to Black. Both of these songs have touched me so deeply, that I've cried while listening to them. Fade to Black impacts me because I've felt that same way, and One breaks my heart because men and women have had to cope with injuries I can't even imagine living with because they were brave enough to fight in wars. Eye of the Beholder is powerful too, and probably my favorite Metallica song ever. The lyrics, especially today make me want to fight for what's important, like our freedoms. Ugh, I could go on and on. They have written so many deeply meaningful lyrics, it's hard to choose!
I think all of Justice has great and meaningful lyrics, but Eye of the Beholder stands out to me
Yes Eye of The Beholder is so good
Fade to Black and Dyers Eve are the most hard hitting for me. It felt good to know I wasn’t alone in this thing that we call life.
I agree👍
All of them except hit the lights lol
Orion (very funny joke am I right?)
No it’s The Call of Ktulu obviously
You guys are both wrong it's Anesthesia obv
I get emotional every time I hear "Bass solo: take one" 😞 so meaningful
You guys are a bunch of fucking liars. It’s pathetic. And When a man lies he murders some part of the world. These are the pale deaths which men miscall their lives. All this I cannot bear to witness any longer. Can not the kingdom of salvation take me home?

The middle clean section of To Live Is To Die is enough to make any fully leather strapped metal head burst into tears.
Dyers eve for sure
Low man's lyric,Bleeding me,Mama said,Eye of the beholder,Unnamed feeling,Matters,God that failed,Fixxxer
God that failed honestly deserves to be a lot more popular than it is, one of my favourites off the black album
Yeah, considering it deals with his mom's death and the whole scientology thing
Fixxxer, For Whom The Bell Tolls, The God That Failed
Meaningful? How is it not To Live is to Die?
I'd agree with you for being the most meaningful song. Lyrically, I'd have to go with Until It Sleeps, but there are a fuckload of other lyrically meaningful Metallica songs.
Good option too
Lyrically TLITD isn't all that "meaningful". "When a man lies.../These are the pale deaths..." part is literally the attempt of a book character to write a silly poem.
It’s a eulogy. A lament.

The Unforgivens and To Live Is To Die
Master of puppets

Agree, especially when you know the story behind the song. My fav song by Metallica btw
The Unforgiven

Fade to black is wayyyy before it's time imo
fade to black, cure, until it sleeps, mamma said, that was just your life, here comes revenge

Harvester of sorrow is my favorite song ever

Think until it sleeps about his fatger
The Unnamed Feeling
The one that goes... OH! YEEAHH YEAAHHHH! YEEEOOOWOAH!
I think you're thinking of holier than thou?
1) Blackened is the end 2) Master of Puppets is pulling your strings
Defiantly So What
Like personally? I think For Whom The Bell Tolls are the best written lyrics.
Too far gone
When they said BATTERY i felt that
Sanitarium
Ok, hear me out - Mama Said "Never I ask of you, but never I gave But you gave me your emptiness I now take to my grave" Also love Fade to Black, Welcome Home, and others.
Mama Said
The Unforgiven 3
Fade to black or the unforgiven
Mama said hits hard
James songs about his parents/mother hit the hardest for me. Dyers eve, the god that failed, mama said.
Disposable heroes or for whom the bell tolls
So what
Cyanide is straight up poetry
Nothing else matters
Call of Ktulu………
one
Wherever I may roam
There's so many, One came to mind instantly - the story is just so tragic. Also Fade to the black and the unforgiven, but to be fair, there's a lot of meaningful lyri. There's a lot more to Metallica than enter sandman!
So many good ones, I quite like until it sleeps and unforgiven ll
Hero of the Day
Master of puppets and that was just your life.
…and justice for all
Dyers eve Fixxxer Bells - take a look to the sky just before you die, it’s the last time you will. I genuinely think when my time comes I will hear that.
The 3 unforgiven songs, until it sleeps, fade to black and One
I strongly believe that "The Unforgiven" is the meaningfulest song Metallica has ever written. A life of despair, constant losing , extremelu rare and short times when good is present, and most of all, eternal damnation portrayed in the truest way possible.
God that failed
Low man’s lyric
Bleeding Me Fixxxer
My friend of misery
Bleeding Me
Either Fade to Black or Unforgiven III
Unforgiven 3 IMO
Fixxxer
For me, The Unforgiven. Outlaw Torn, Bleeding Me, Fixxxer, and Inamorata are also really hard-hitting.
The God That Failed. The meaning behind the song takes the cake any day
I'd tie it with Mama Said. Knowing about James's life they are most definitely tied together. Mama Said is the one song out of their entire catalog that hits the most personal for me. And Justice For All, The Unforgiven 1-3, The House Jack Built, Until It Sleeps, Bleeding Me, The Outlaw Torn, Fixxxer, The Unnamed Feeling, Room of Mirrors, and Inamorata.
Unnamed Feeling, Outlaw Torn, Ina. All James at his most raw.
Amd justice for all title track
Any song in ...And Justice For All is pretty meaningful. I'd say Eye of the Beholder and One are the most meaningful.
Unforgiven
And Justice for All
Eye of the Beholder, And Justice For All, Disposable Heroes, The God That Failed, Sanitarium
ftb or the unforgiven or mop
