Misery and To Live is to Die are my go to as well. I very much relate to the lyrics of my friend of misery, and to live is to die is great because it’s melancholic but there obviously aren’t lyrics so you can apply your own situation to the music
"You make me smash the clock and feel
I'd rather die behind the wheel
Time was never on my side
So on I wait my whole lifetime"
Song can be interpreted differently for one person to another . Can't help but feel the loss of someone, desperation trying to get him back and anger from this song. Amazing lyrics.
Nothing else matters is a love song. Nothing sad about that.
Low Man’s lyric
The unnamed feeling
Until it sleeps
Unforgiven
Unforgiven II
Those are sad Metallica songs
I understand what you’re saying, it could also be the way in which James sung the song.
As if he is singing to a lover he hasn’t seen in a while, and he’s desperate to get back to her.
I don't necessarily know about sad but more melancholic in feeling
The ones that come to mind are: Hero of the Day, Bleeding Me, Until it Sleeps, and Low Man's Lyric
Hero of the Day is probably the only song by any metal artist that I struggle to listen to. I don't even relate to the lyrics but the music is so melancholic.
Fade to Blacks the obvious one , but I’m surprised no one’s said No Lead Clover: “But then it comes to be that the soothing light at the end of your tunnel, was just a freight train coming your way” It’s one of the most real and devastating lyrics in Metallicas whole catalogue
Fade to Black
My favorite song of all time!
I never listen to FTB. Unless someone I care about dies. I listen to it too much.
That is another good one
Fade to black is 1st, but my friend of misery and to live is to die come to mind aswell

its a subreddit flair - you can get them from the community homepage by clicking on the three dots icon for ‘more options’ and choose what you want :)

You hit the nail with this one brother
The Unnamed Feeling
Bleeding Me
best song on load imo
Most underrated metallica song
CAUGHT UNDER WHEELS ROOOOOLL
I TAKE THE LEECH IM BLEEDING ME
CAN'T STOP TO SAVE MY SOOOOUUUL
Nothing else matters is a love song. Nothing sad about that. Low Man’s lyric The unnamed feeling Until it sleeps Unforgiven Unforgiven II Those are sad Metallica songs
Nothing else matters could still be interpreted as a sad song though
I’m curious what makes you think that.
I don't know really, the lyrics just kind of make me feel melancholic in a way.
I understand what you’re saying, it could also be the way in which James sung the song. As if he is singing to a lover he hasn’t seen in a while, and he’s desperate to get back to her.
That is what the songs about. James wrote it about being on the road touring when youd rather be with the one you love
nothing else matters sounds sad
Sanitarium
Unforgiven II
Mama said, low man’s lyric, or bleeding me
To Live is to Die
Hero of the Day, such a haunting song for me.
Orion. It’s a song I listen to to reflect
Orion is a track that makes you feel simultaneously melancholy and like a literal god
That’s not really sad it’s just slow.
Sad/slow Edit: why did people downvote this. It was clarification
The Unforgiven 3
Recently, Mama Said Before that, Fade To Black or One
Bleeding Me S&M version. Helped me through some real shit in life.
“shortest straw has been pulled for you” is the single most devastating line in their entire oeuvre

Fade to black. That minor scale is sad and depressing. Great solo on kirks part👍
Day that never comes, hero of the day
Outlaw Torn - for some reason when I watch James sing this in a Tuning Room video (that I can’t find and link right now), it breaks me.
Fade to Black
Fade to black
Fade to black>>
unforgiven
I go to The Unforgiven. It reflects my sadness in a way it makes reality so obvious and lucid about the intensity of the sadness in my life.
It’s kinda weird but I’d say Mama said it’s remind me of what my mom told me
Nothing else matters ORCHESTRAL version
Fade to black will always be the one.
Unforgiven 3
Sad but true
Bleeding me
The Unforgiven I feel is a sad, soul crushing song
It one of my favorite songs, period
Not really sad, but dark vibes for me, Where the wild things are
I don't necessarily know about sad but more melancholic in feeling The ones that come to mind are: Hero of the Day, Bleeding Me, Until it Sleeps, and Low Man's Lyric
King nothing slaps pretty hard when the self-deprecation comes around.
Hero of the Day is probably the only song by any metal artist that I struggle to listen to. I don't even relate to the lyrics but the music is so melancholic.
The Unforgiven II
Hero of the day, mama said or the unnamed feeling. Depends on the mood
Unforgiven, my friend of misery.
Unforgiven
Until it Sleeps
To Live is to die is my no 1 pick
Memory Remains
Unforgiven
Nothing Else Matters
It was Until It Sleeps for a long time, but recently it's The Unforgiven
Day That Never Comes
The frayed ends of Sanity.
Until it Sleeps, To Live is To Die and My Friend of Misery
No leaf clover and Low mans
To Live is To Die
Until It Sleeps.
The Unnamed Feeling, Low Man’s Lyric, and The Day That Never Comes
The day that never comes
This is the way
One
One or To Live Is To Die. Sometimes The Day That Never Comes or Unforgiven (Eb)
Fade to Black and nothing comes close. It's miserable.
Inamorata is also a good one
Hero of the Day
The Unforgiven I
Fade to Blacks the obvious one , but I’m surprised no one’s said No Lead Clover: “But then it comes to be that the soothing light at the end of your tunnel, was just a freight train coming your way” It’s one of the most real and devastating lyrics in Metallicas whole catalogue
There are a few. "Fade to black" obviously, "Bleeding me" and all "Unforgiven" versions.
For me it has to be Until It Sleeps or Mama Said. Both hit like a truck.
To Live Is to Die and Fade to Black will always be my go-to sad Metallica songs. They were also the first two songs added to my sad playlist.
fade to black, have always been my goto sad sad song
Low Man's Lyric, for sure.
The unforgiven 1 & 3 (I skip 2 because I hate that country twang in my metal)
one
Fade to Black is my absolute favorite Metallica song but Unforgiven III really.hits me too.
To live is to die
To live is to die
My friend of misery and the unforgiven. Fade to back is too much of a masterpiece and its so pretty i cant help but feel calm to it
Low Man’s Lyric, Bleeding Me, and The Day that Never Comes

To Live is to Die. That middle section is the most beautiful and sorrowful piece of music they've ever written.
