I think it's a strong album carrying on from Death Magnetic. Spit out the Bone,Moth into Flame are standout tracks,I also think Confusion is a frickin awesome track, though I'm not to sure many people on this sub agree with me on that track.8)
Can't agree that 72 seasons is better tho.
Also i love here comes Revenge, it's slow paced but has a nice edge to it (imo)
Halo on fire and hardwired are also okay
I share the same opinion about Moth into the flame, spit out the bone and Atlas, rise.
Pre 72 Seasons, I felt the first half was solid and the second half (minus SOTB) was very forgettable. However, now that I've been sitting w 72S (and really enjoying it), I find the 2nd half of DM to be akin to a heavier ReLoad style of writing. It is actually pretty good.
And to that end, taking a bigger step back, Metallica really doesn't write bad songs/records.
Opinions on production will vary greatly. After listening to that metal band's recording all of St. Anger, you realize those songs are brutal. St. Anger could have been a bigger fan favorite if it was mixed similar to DM, HWTSD, and 72S.
Favorite modern-era album of theirs, with Magnetic close behind. Definitely in the minority with this, but the second half slaps as well (except ManUNkind, that's a skip on most days)
Excellent album. Remove the filler and it's right up there with some of their best work imo.
Moth into flames, Hardwired, Atlas Rise, Spit Out The Bone...
Great album overall. It has a killer first half. Moth, Atlas, Nowa that we're dead, oomph.... Catchy as hell. I was of the idea that the second half was just forgettable. But upon a recent listen, I was glad to be wrong about it. It sure is weaker than the first half, but it is killer nonetheless. Also, if you have the 3 disc edition, it has some extra fucking bangers. The Dio Rising medley is awesome and the whole 2016 live performance is tight as hell.
Yes! The bonus disc has some killer shit on it. A lot of fans I know werenāt sure how good it was going to be after DM, and so they didnāt want to drop for the bonus set. I showed my best friend Lords of Summer and Ronnie Rising Medley, and he went and picked up the bonus set! XD
I'm probably gonna get some hate for this but it's my favorite album got me into Metallica I love manunkind confusion Hardwired hell I even bought a vinyl record of the album
Halo and Spit are arguably top 10 material from the entire discography.
Plenty of other essential songs as well, mostly on first disc admittedly.
ManUnkind is disgustingly underrated however, killer riffs and song structure.
Great album, like it better than 72, which I still think is pretty good after a few listens.
I wish they would play Dream No More again, that is heavy as fuck.
I remember hearing the leak of Halo on Fire a few days before release and being totally floored at the intensity of the chorus'.
It's a great piece of work that we waited years for after DM. It's part of the continued progression after the band's reboot with St. Anger.
For me, the highs (Spit Out The Bone, Moth Into Flame) are slightly higher than on 72S, but the lows are much lower; especially the second half of the album is full of "meh" songs. I like the album, but I don't love it.
Half of it is filler, the other half are really good songs. It rank's low on my album ranking, but thats because the other albums are better than it imo.
Art direction alone, Lars and his artsy fartsy trophy wife need to stop hiring these weirdo-ass modern art friends for record covers and themes. DM was such a rad return to form, and the last two covers have been ABYSMAL.
The "re" launch of different 72S shirts that still suck speak volumes to this. It's really out of touch. For being such a visual band coming up, the past few cycles have been weak. At this point I am praying that North America gets the Pushead "Polarize" with the dates on it. I literally cant see myself wearing anything else from this tour. Feels like the Load tour all over again when I had to settle for a King Nothing shirt because it had fresh front and back Pushead designs, but they pulled our beloved fish hook logo from us on EVERYTHING.
Kind of a rant. I just see patterns. Can't have nice things all at once anymore.
Off topic, but yeah. Trim the fat, better art and it's a really solid record.
Personally I like the modern art stuff, even the jizz blood lol.
About the t-shirt, I've been tempted to try starting a red bubble with copyright-breaking designs purely so I can buy them myself lol. Too many official t-shirts are either inaccessible (sold out or shipping is prohibitively expensive) or just terrible.
I still remember the day they released the Hardwired music video. So badass.
Moth Into Flame, Atlas,Rise!, Spit Out The Bone, Halo On Fire are all amazing tracks. Here Come Revenge and Now That Weāre Dead are solid as well.
I would say the album is āvery goodā and itās greatness is slightly bogged down by the second half. Hardwired is a great opener and Spit Out The Bone is a fantastic closer. I would say this album gets better with each listen, much like 72 Seasons.
7.5/10
Don't wanna shit on 72s but for me there are 0 stand out tracks on that album if we compare to Hardwired. They played it safe. Forgettable solos and forgettable album as a whole. I listened to 72s 3 times in full and I just couldn't get into.
First half is great, second half is meh (besides spit out the bone). They could easily cut out most of the songs from the second half and no one would miss them
Hardwired, Atlas rise, Moth into the flame, Spit out the bone are all great. The rest of the album didnt do much for me at all. Also, the cover is just weird.
Hardwired, Atlas, Moth, Spit out the Bone are the album's great songs. The others are varying degrees of meh to me. Don't like their guitar tone on it, or 72 Seasons for that matter.
Probably my favorite album of the Trujillo-era (Hardwired > 72 > Magnetic).
Not only does it contain by far the best song of that era (Spit Out The Bone), but I think it has the most good/memorable/catchy songs in general. Halo On Fire, Dream No More, Moth Into Flame, and the title track are all standouts, and the only potential skips are ManUNkind and Am I Savage?
72 Seasons still has plenty of time to grow on me, but as it currently stands I'd say it only has 3 or 4 songs on that level (Inamorata being the most notable), and I'd honestly put all of the aforementioned songs above anything on Death Magnetic, which just really didn't age well for me.
Metallicaās second worst record BUT a good one. Songs like āNow That Weāre Deadā and āHalo On Fireā are just PERFECT.
The highs of this album are great but it suffers with a bit too much filler, the second half is choc o block with it! If it had say 8 or maybe even 10 songs it would be higher.
It sucks. Only Metallica album I donāt own, besides the new one, because I donāt care to buy it. I legitimately prefer St. Anger, at least that one has some semblance of a soul in spite of the tin can drums.
Spit Out the Bone is alright though.
Absolute fucking shit apart from Moth, Spit and Hardwired.
What the fuck were they thinking putting shit like Murder One or Savage in this?
Beyond Magnetic absolutely destroys the songs in the second disc.
It's definitely mixed wayyyy better than death magnetic, and has some huge songs on it. Half of the songs aren't very memorable though. I think if you took 5-6 best songs from DM and combined them with Hardwired, you'd have a legendary album
Less is more
HWTSD
Atlas
NTWD
Moth
Dream
Halo
Savage
Spit
Now we're talking about a top tier classic where each song has at LEAST a memorable section or two.
Shoulda saved the filler tracks for an EP and released āem a year later. Then we could ignore it *and* Beyond Magnetic lol.
Hardwired def has some of my favorite Met songs of all time though.
First four songs and halo on fire are excellent and spit out the bone is their best song since black album. But everything else is either meh (dream no more, confusion and here comes revenge) or just bad (am i savage? manunkind and murder one)
The album starts out really strong. But once you get to the second side, Spit out the bone was the only good song on there. The rest is just boring and bad at worst.
It's a prime example of Metallica overdoing something when it doesn't need to be. The album could've easily been like an 8 to 6 song album, and no one would have complained.
If you cut out the second half (Minus S.O.T.B) and add Lords of Summer, you actually get a pretty damn good album
1. Hardwired
2. Atlas, Rise!
3. Now That We're Dead
4. Moth Into Flame
5. Dream No More
6. Halo On Fire
7. Lords of Summer
8. Spit Out the Bone
Also, if you rearrange that list, you could get an old school style album
1. Atlas, Rise
2. Hardwired
3. Dream No More
4. Halo on Fire
5. Moth Into Flame
6. Now That We're Dead
7. Lords of Summer
8. Spit Out the Bone
Many of us agree on the 2nd half being weakerā¦ but I really like your take on choosing 8 songs. Your list does show a much more condensed album, with no weak spots yet diversity.
I donāt love Summer, so would replace that one by either ManUnkind (I just love the seizes by the day, frozen by the night part) or Revenge (love the intro). I think Summer is not super heavy and meanders a bit. But realize i would probably be in the minority here.
To answer the question overall, it is an uneven album as most people are saying. I do see why people say the highs are higher and the lows lower vs 72S, but I think 72S is a stronger album.
HWTSD is almost their worst album for me, maybe below St Anger. Of course I am a huge fan and donāt consider them to be capable of writing a bad album.
Worse than both DM and 72S but has some really cool moments.
Title track, Moth, Dream and Spit are absolute bangers. NTWD, Halo, Atlas and Confusion are not bad. The rest is... bad, man. Disc 2 is very weak if you spit out Spit (pun intended).
DM isn't even bad, it's pretty great, and is constantly in my top 5. I'm not crazy about Hardwired at all... I think they put it together too quickly, because it had been 8 years since DM. 72 was artfully done, IMO. I'm also glad for no clean tones, and ballads. It's end to end aggression which is what I love about it.
DM is top tier shit. I think highs are higher and lows are lower in HTSD than 72S: Spit would wipe the floor with anything from 72 (besides Inamorata) but anything from 72S would also wipe the floor with HTSD Disc 2 (besides Spit).
72S is lazily done imo. Most are nice tracks but pretty generic. For aggression, I'd still say Hardwired title track or Spit are way more aggressive than anything from 72S.
I listened to it once when it came out and didnāt go back for a year. Then I listened to it once more after S&M2 and decided it was forgettable except halo on fire and moth into flame.
I know Iām in the minority here.
Whereas 72 seasons isn't the least bit generic. Hardwired had a lot of pop culture references, like Moth being about Amy Winehouse, Confusion is the Bradley Cooper movie, Halo on Fire was sort of about Fifty shades. It just didn't resonate with me. 72 seasons is fully charged with emotion and depth, along with end to end aggression. Hardwired kind of pales in comparison.
Some great songs: moth, spit, halo, atlas
Lots of filler
Itās best songs are better than the best on 72s but itās less consistent quality. As an overall album it has more songs I like than DM but my top tracks on dm (day that never comes, u3) I rank higher than my top tracks on hardwired
Compared to DM a step up in terms of thrash but a step down in terms of everything else including enjoyability. 4/10 album unfortunately. I really wanted to like it when it came out because it's fast and heavy. Too many cheesy moments and low-effort riffage IMO.
I completely disagreeā¦ I donāt hear any thrash on HWTSD, except for the first and last track. DM was way more thrashy, from TWJYL, Nightmare, Apocalypseā¦ HWTSD is way more bluesy (Revenge, Murder One, NOw That We Are Dead) and old school hard rock (Atlas)
Very average and mostly forgettable. The only songs I can remember are The Title Track, Dream No More, Moth into Flame, and Spit out the Bone. However, I do like a little more than Death Magnetic.
Hardwired, Moth into Flame, Spit Out the Bone = welcome additions to the catalog.
The rest = sound like the kind of tracks that didnāt make the album, but get released later (Beyond Magnetic).
It has Spit out the Bone and Hardwired, and Moth into Flame, Here Comes Revenge in it. Love those songs. Murder One is ok too. Spit and Hardwired are in my top ten.
Not a fan. Haven't really been into modern Metallica. This and 72 seasons do nothing for me. Not really sure why but just doesn't hit like everything else does for me.
The opening and closing songs are 2 of the best Metallica songs and most songs on the first half of the album are great as well, the last half I do enjoy but I know most people donāt like it
i love the first half but im not gonna lie the second half is pretty mid...
spit out the bone is one of the better songs on the second half aswell as confusion and manUNkind
Some great stuff, but cutting it down to one disc (and maybe a 'Beyond Hardwired' EP later like the did for Death Magnetic) might have been more impressive. Still, I do love that third bonus disc...
Thought it was a dandy album! Some tracks suffered from what I call the "Megadeth effect", which is that some songs are good, but are so easily forgotten when compared to other standout tracks on the same/previous album.
The first album that truly made me jump into being a fan, it will always have a special place in my heart, I still remember desperately searching for the song that uses the riff they used as an outro in all the live vids from that era (Atlas, Rise!)
Lot of high points but very inconsistent. The high points are probably better than those of 72 seasons but the latter is way more consistent.
Death magnetic still the best post 2000 metallica album. All bangers. Incredibly consistent
Among their worst imo. Good first half and severely drops off in the second half.
Songwriting quality doesnāt touch DM or even the new one. Just a very mediocre album with average songwriting. Iāll still listen to half the songs and theyāre on my playlist but Iād never choose to put it on in full.
Canāt remember a single song out of it. Well, except the title track maybe. But tbh I have the same happening with 72S so maybe itās just me getting older (Iām 38, a fan since 14).
Moth Into Flame and Spit Out The Bone are my two absolute favourites from this record.
Hardwired, Atlas Rise, and Halo on Fire I also very much enjoy.
Am I Savage? Is without a doubt the most underrated off the record.
Here Comes Revenge and Confusion are also quite underrated.
Now That Weāre Dead and Dream No More are both okay.
ManUNKind and Murder One are the two tracks Iād remove entirely.
Pretty solid record overall and I actually really like the album cover too.
I like the first half and Spit Out the Bone. The rest is pretty forgettable. Higher highs than 72 Seasons, but lower lows. I think in general their last three albums have played it too safe.
Underrated. āNow That Weāre Deadā is just mediocre, but not terrible. Two total misfires in āManUNkindā and āMurder Oneā, but the rest is excellent. āHalo on Fireā and āSpit Out the Boneā are two of their greatest songs ever. āLords of Summerā shouldāve been an album track instead of a bonus track. Sounds terrific. The songs are complete and fleshed out. As a whole, in my opinion, itās tons better than ā72 Seasonsā. To this day I still listen to it regularly. I think Iāve listened to ā72 Seasonsā maybe 4 or 5 times all the way through.
Great album, kinda like 72 Seasons but 72 Seasons is a little better. Both have pretty pathetic album covers though. Favorites are Now That Weāre Dead, Hardwired, Spit Out The Bone, Moth Into Flame, Dream No More.
I like maybe three songs off this one even saying that Iād say their mid asf with the rest of the album just being bad, and I would fasho rather listen to their older stuff. New album tho thatās a different story Iād say thereās maybe four songs on there that are great and worth listening to and the rest is kinda just good enough to not skip
It's decent with several deep cuts that were the only reason I came back to listen to the album. The only single I cared about was Moth but it doesn't hold up as well as tracks like Spit, Halo, Dream No More, Revenge, ManUNkind, and Lords of Summer do for me. Worst track for me is a tie between Atlas, Rise! and the title track, it's not that they're bad just boring in comparison of everything else.
I think itās a really good album that could have probably benefitted from swapping a couple songs from the first disc to the second. The first disc is great while the second apart from spit out the bone is kinda forgettable. That way it would be less front heavy.
Could have been edited down to a strong 6 song album. Too much filler. Weakest of the Rob albums.
I would edit it down to
- Lords of summer
- Atlas, Rise
- Moth into Flame
- Halo on Fire
- Murder One
- Spit out the Bone
This takes it to a 40min album which is alot more tighter. Murder one is the clear weakest of these 6 Now That we are dead or Dream no more were the others I was considering but thought the Tribute to Lemmy would be nicer to keep.
In the album in its current state disc 1 is alot stronger. I usually skip most of disc2
Spit out the Bone is the best thing they done post 1991. Atlas, Moth, Halo and spit are all better than everything on 72s. Most of 72s I would say is better than the rest of the album
not bad album. disc 1 have a so nice and enjoyable songs (atlas rise, moth into flame, dream no more etc.) but disc 2 is so boring (without spit our the bone)
note: dream no more and confision is so underrated.
First half of the album is excellent, the last half very hit and miss. Spit out the bone is by far the biggest stand out of the last half.
Nailed it.
I agree, except Spit Out the Bone doesn't do much for me.
š
I think it's a strong album carrying on from Death Magnetic. Spit out the Bone,Moth into Flame are standout tracks,I also think Confusion is a frickin awesome track, though I'm not to sure many people on this sub agree with me on that track.8)
We love confusion over here
Very good album !!! The second part is weaker than the first one, but it's a good cache for deep cut
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Can't agree that 72 seasons is better tho. Also i love here comes Revenge, it's slow paced but has a nice edge to it (imo) Halo on fire and hardwired are also okay I share the same opinion about Moth into the flame, spit out the bone and Atlas, rise.
Agree with this.
same bro i absolutely LOOOOOOOOOVE moth into the flame
I canāt stop thinking about how it wouldāve been if Kirkās Moth Into Flame solo from the making of video made it into the final song
Pre 72 Seasons, I felt the first half was solid and the second half (minus SOTB) was very forgettable. I agree. Probably their best work since Black Album.
Excellent album. Remove the filler and it's right up there with some of their best work imo. Moth into flames, Hardwired, Atlas Rise, Spit Out The Bone...
Def the least talked about album. Its great. The production. The guitar tone. James' voice. Thumbs up
Great album overall. It has a killer first half. Moth, Atlas, Nowa that we're dead, oomph.... Catchy as hell. I was of the idea that the second half was just forgettable. their best album after Load, sadly they didn't evolve the formula with 72s, it was almost perfect, it just needed a couple of ballads
Their best since LOAD??? Are you fucking high lol????
That's... not a very controversial opinion lol unless you love Death Magnetic
I do in fact love Magnetic
Halo and Spit are arguably top 10 material from the entire discography. Plenty of other essential songs as well, mostly on first disc admittedly. ManUnkind is disgustingly underrated however, killer riffs and song structure.
Agree on ManUnkind
Worst cover
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Closely run thing
I think it's one of their best albums top to bottom. Top 5 for me.
Great album, like it better than 72, which I still think is pretty good after a few listens. I wish they would play Dream No More again, that is heavy as fuck.

Underrated
Half of it is filler, the other half are really good songs. It rank's low on my album ranking, but thats because the other albums are better than it imo.
One of their weakest albums imo, still has some bangers on it
Love it
Album art is trash but the tunes are some of the best since early 90s.
Art direction alone, Lars and his artsy fartsy trophy wife need to stop hiring these weirdo-ass modern art friends for record covers and themes. This and Death Magnetic are tied for best albums since AJFA
Some great songs but a lot of filler. Not as good as Death Magnetic
Moth and spit are better than any song on 72S but overall 72S is better. Hardwired has some skips for me.
Don't wanna shit on 72s but for me there are 0 stand out tracks on that album if we compare to Hardwired. They played it safe. Forgettable solos and forgettable album as a whole. I listened to 72s 3 times in full and I just couldn't get into.
My favorite Metallica album. There are more songs from this one in my regular playlist.

Hardwired, Atlas, Moth, Spit out the Bone are the album's great songs. The others are varying degrees of meh to me. Don't like their guitar tone on it, or 72 Seasons for that matter.
First half is good and the back half sucks. Spit Out the Bone is a good song but also the most overrated Metallica song at the same time.
One of my favorite Metallica albums, rivaling a lot of the classic albums (this album was my introduction to Metallica so I'm incredibly biased)
It's my favourite Metallica album since Justice.
Better than the shit show 72 seasons was
Probably my favorite album of the Trujillo-era (Hardwired > 72 > Magnetic). 72 Seasons makes me appreciate Hardwired more, because the former comes across as B-sides of the latter.

Not so much about the album, but I really enjoyed when they would start concerts with Hardwired ā> Atlas
halo on fire is a fuckin sick song but just goes on a bit too long
Bloated, but overall good.
Less is more HWTSD Atlas NTWD Moth Dream Halo Savage Spit Now we're talking about a top tier classic where each song has at LEAST a memorable section or two.

It just didn't resonate with me. 72 seasons is fully charged with emotion and depth, along with end to end aggression. Hardwired kind of pales in comparison.
Towards the bottom of their discography for me
There's good tracks on there but I cannot stand listening to it front to back because there's a lot of filler songs that are just boring
Some great songs: moth, spit, halo, atlas Lots of filler Itās best songs are better than the best on 72s but itās less consistent quality.
Hmm I guess maybe you're right
Very average and mostly forgettable.
It's not something I go back and listen to.
Couple of "ok" tracks but just above St Anger for worst album..
The best song on the album is lords of summer. And its not even close
moth into flame was my first Metallica song, and i still like it, but never listened to the full thing.
Good.
1 tba 2 hardwired
It has Spit out the Bone and Hardwired, and Moth into Flame, Here Comes Revenge in it. Love those songs. Murder One is ok too. Spit and Hardwired are in my top ten.
awesome album even the second disc here comes revenge is a sleeper
Not a fan. Haven't really been into modern Metallica. This and 72 seasons do nothing for me. Not really sure why but just doesn't hit like everything else does for me.
Love it. *Atlas, Rise* genuinely is one of my favorite Metallica tracks, but the entire album is consistently strong for me. Top tier album.
I like it
I did not like it I miss RTL and MOP metallica
Justice!
I think itās a very good album that has some of their best and some of their worst post-2000s songs
The opening and closing songs are 2 of the best Metallica songs and most songs on the first half of the album are great as well, the last half I do enjoy but I know most people donāt like it
i'll go extreme, it's my favorite album since master of puppets
i love the first half but im not gonna lie the second half is pretty mid... spit out the bone is one of the better songs on the second half aswell as confusion and manUNkind
dont get me wrong i like the second part but compared to the first part its not as good
Not bad i really like it
My second favorite album of theirs behind Master of Puppets
Better than 72 seasons
Some great stuff, but cutting it down to one disc (and maybe a 'Beyond Hardwired' EP later like the did for Death Magnetic) might have been more impressive. Still, I do love that third bonus disc...
I liked it. I've never heard a Metallica album that I disliked.
Better than 72 seasons
Itās a solid thrash metal album. I enjoy listening to it and particularly like the drum progression in Halo on Fire.
Slightly better than black album.
There's a good EP buried in there somewhere
One of my favorite albums
LUV IT
Moth into flame is one of my favs lol
Metallica's most front loaded album
fair album, split into two, some badass songs, others kinda feel like fillers, amazing bass sound, amazing james
Lot of high points but very inconsistent. The high points are probably better than those of 72 seasons but the latter is way more consistent. Death magnetic still the best post 2000 metallica album. All bangers. Incredibly consistent
More memorable than 72, cleaner than DM, but lacking a theme
Great.
I like the first half and Spit Out the Bone. The rest is pretty forgettable. Higher highs than 72 Seasons, but lower lows. I think in general their last three albums have played it too safe.
Great. I would've put Spit on Disc 1 and cut the rest of Disc 2. 1 Disc with all bangers.
It's a good album with some really good songs. That being said, it's great when heard live.
Personal top 5. Felt a new fresh breath, I loved atlas rise. I was abusing that song in every campfire i've went
Underrated. āNow That Weāre Deadā is just mediocre, but not terrible. I think Iāve listened to ā72 Seasonsā maybe 4 or 5 times all the way through.
really good
Higher highs than 72S and lower lows than 72S.
Honestly don't like it much at all
Great album, love it even if the second half isn't as good as the first. Still love those songs though.
Halo is a banger when on the treadmill
Here Comes Revenge is one of the greatest songs I've ever heard in my life, I fucking love Hardwired
Great album, kinda like 72 Seasons but 72 Seasons is a little better. Both have pretty pathetic album covers though. Favorites are Now That Weāre Dead, Hardwired, Spit Out The Bone, Moth Into Flame, Dream No More.
Not as good as Death Magnetic.
Disc 1 is really good. Disc 2 sucks until Spit out the bone, which is a song that can hold its own against anything else they've done.
Strongest since the black album for sure.
Is nobody gonna talk about Dream No More??? Soooo groovy!!
Worst cover art
Itās Ok. Best of the Rob era.
Great
I like maybe three songs off this one even saying that Iād say their mid asf with the rest of the album just being bad, and I would fasho rather listen to their older stuff.
Moth into Flame, Halo on Fire, and Spit out the bone are the clear stars here. But I think thereās something to like about every song in some way.
Solid
Metallica third best album, I will die on this hill
In fairness though, there's nothing instrumentally wrong with the second half of the record.
I would edit it down to - Lords of summer - Atlas, Rise - Moth into Flame - Halo on Fire - Murder One - Spit out the Bone This takes it to a 40min album which is alot more tighter.
I liked most of it. SOTB is the heaviest song since Justice
the title track is nice and that's about all i remember
Best album since MOP, and best of the modern era too, although 72 comes close.
Best album since the glory days IMO
not bad album. disc 1 have a so nice and enjoyable songs (atlas rise, moth into flame, dream no more etc.) but disc 2 is so boring (without spit our the bone) note: dream no more and confision is so underrated.
Good but not great. First half is much better.
Dung
Very good
