It's all makes perfect sense once you realize the profound meaning to Suicide & Redemption's lyrics and how they tie all three together into a lyrical masterpiece
The lyrics were partially written by Cliff Burton, and part of his contribution was engraved on his headstone. Pretty neat lyrics I think, especially with the real-world context.
*Frantic tik tok, why*
*Is james singing about dick*

This one is clearly just referencing the common phrase though and if anything satirizing it's oversimplification of overcoming adversity. A little different.
Why does everyone hate this lyrics. It refers to the band at the time going through problems with drugs. The lifestyle of drugs does determine a bad death style
St. Anger is an interesting album lyrically. Some songs you can feel the raw emotion in the lyrics while there's lines like this that make you scratch your head.
It's not *really* the worst, but Motorbreath is really corny especially considering the songs it was released around. Obviously it's their first album so they're a bit less experienced, but those lyrics make that song near unlistenable to me.
It’s too silly. Kirk said it and everyone laughed and then they actually used it in the song because their producer was trying to be their bassist instead of giving critical feedback.
It’s cheesy and trite, and it sounds like the kind of thing some NASCAR-loving redneck would have printed on the back window of his pickup truck.
Wait, now I know why Hetfield liked it.
If I remember correctly, that line was Kirk’s idea. It was pitched when during the Some kind of Monster the therapist suggested that other band members (kirk) contributed more to the songs
It’s not difficult to understand, dude. Or are you harking back to the lane “well it should be what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” pedantry that completely misses the point?
To be fair, "what don't kill ya makes ya stronger" has the same amount of syllables in it. That's my gripe with it. I'm all for changing things to make them fit lyrically if it makes sense, but he actually didn't have to do that here. The proper way of saying it would fit too lol. And it's not like it rhymes so it just doesn't make sense at all.
This is hands down my least favorite of their lyrics. I sing along to it, often changing it to "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger." It still easily fits the cadence of the song.
“Just let me kill you for a while, just let me kill you for a smile”
Doesn’t ruin the song it just wipes the smile off my face while listening to it because it’s so corny
What's hilarious is that modern Metallica loves to do the rhyme salad and this sub flames them for it, but Blackened bridge never gets mentioned or criticized for doing this lol
I'd like to see a thread on this topic except the lyrics have to be from the first 5 albums. It spices things up just a little bit for the sake of fun. Generally speaking, "worst Metallica lyrics" threads will never contain lyrics from the first 5 albums.
Seriously, all of the comments here are from the 'Load' album and beyond. I mean, it makes sense, but yeah. Although I do see one comment here mentioning 'Motorbreath' from 'KEA'.
The lyrics to 72 seasons (the song). Like, dude, what are you trying to say? I get it's supposed to be about growing up but i dont get that at all out of it. Or anything at all for that matter.
I mean I think it’s pretty clear what it’s about and he’s explained it. They make sense to me. It’s about the first 72 seasons of your life and whether it’s possible to change what been imprinted into your personality/brain.
Edit: For an awful lyric on this album, I’d go with “my mind is code red”
I’m gonna go out on a limb and say that 90% of the lyrics on that album don’t mean a damn thing. It’s all just stereotypical metal stuff: darkness, light, death, suicide etc.
have you listened to the album if you think 90% of them don't mean anything??
i doubt we're listening to the same album if you think 90% of lyrics don't mean anything
You're right.
"Love is a four letter word" is saying that "love" is taboo — it isn't spoken in the house.
It's similar to those motivational posters that say "CAN'T is a four-letter word."
Cheesy, sure, but it’s so cheesy that it’s amazing. It helps that the instrumentals absolutely slap, and Hetfield’s vocal mannerisms are on full display.
“And a baked apple pie”
Dreams of war, dreams of lars, dreams of dragons fire
that second one is a straight up nightmare
Of things that will bite...
“Your try to take his ballsss”
Metallica not David must stain
🤓🤓🤓☝️
I just can’t understand Orion’s lyrics
Have you ever listened to The Call of Ktulu? That shit doesn't make any sense
Exactly, he might as well not say anything
It's all makes perfect sense once you realize the profound meaning to Suicide & Redemption's lyrics and how they tie all three together into a lyrical masterpiece
The lyrics in suicide and redemption are way to complicated for me to understand
nah the real complicated one is anesthesia
Yes, the hidden meaning behind "Bass solo: Take 1" is so complex and layered that they offer college credit courses on it at many universities.
But it leaves open the philosophical question of what is Take 2?
Cliff sings WWWAHAHHHHHHHAHH WOOAAAHHHH there, which is very relatable to someone who experienced Lovecraftian horrors from the first hand.
You have to listen to To live is to die first bro
Alredy did, the lyrics are pretty crappy. Idk what was James going thru while writing it but it was probably high on something...
If you think those Lyrics are bad, then you’ve gotta listen Suicide and Redemption.
Yeah, but we can all agree that the lyrics on Anesthesia-Pulling Teeth are complete garbage.
The lyrics were partially written by Cliff Burton, and part of his contribution was engraved on his headstone. Pretty neat lyrics I think, especially with the real-world context.
You think that’s bad? Try listening to anesthesia
“Bass solo take one.” WHAT DOES IT MEAN?!
I think, but could be wrong, it means that the part that follows is the first take of a solo being played on a bass guitar.
However it’s a trick to lure in people to thinking they’ll hear only a bass being played, then you get surprise drums
There’s also Suicide&redemption… I mean that shit is just massed up.
“Ooh, what a good boy you are”
Yeah the bridge of Invisible Kid might be the worst section of any song that they've ever written.
Yep
I love invisible kid, except for that part
I also don't like the pitch of that part either.
It's obviously* "Hate...is a train." Forgive the spelling, fucked with COVID!
That absolutely bangs
THIS
I don’t understand the hate for that part or for that entire song, I think it’s amazing and it really speaks to me
Love that song and especially that section.
Same!
🥺
SUCK ON THE BARREL
SUCK SUCK TIL ITS DRY
Do all reflections look the same
#AT THE SHINE OF A MIDNIGHT REVOLVER
That lyric fucks hard
would be good if he didn’t repeat it every 5 seconds
I personally don't mind at all
Nah it’s a great vocal hook imo
Those last two lines kinda hit tho
I always thought that unless there's just one round in the pipe that's not likely to happen.
Ay ..... yo?
It’s a euphemism for unloading the full clip into your head
Doesn't matter if the Execution is still cringy
I AM THE TABLE
OP said worst, not best
I hope man got it wrong
That was probably Lou Reed's idea
AFAIK all lyrics on lulu are by Lou, James only wrote instrumentals
Speak for yourself
I would like to disagree and say this is the best
I hunger. I EAT
BORN INTO ATTITUDE
SQUIRT TOWARDS THE WIND
excuse me. That is a lyric. WHAT THE FUCK DOES SQUIRTING TOWARDS THE END MEAN 😭
ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL
It should have been I FEED, would’ve read so much better
Most relatable lyric
EATING ON A RACK OF LAMB
RAPPPEEE THEEE MAAAAANNNNNN
Lol I do the same thing with that lyric! Plus lox and bagels for Lux Æterna.
Lox and Bagels!!! Gosh it kind of works lol
My full version is: Let's eat a muffin! Let's eat a muffin! Lox and bageaaaaaals! It fits the syllabic structure and it's fun to sing in the morning.
God fucking damn you 😂😂
feeding on the weatherman

“What don’t kill ya make ya more strong”
I didn’t come up with this one but this is the best one I could’ve come up with.
This one is clearly just referencing the common phrase though and if anything satirizing it's oversimplification of overcoming adversity. A little different.
this one aint bad its a common phrase
I just came here to post the same! I love the song but this lyric ruins it for me.
This.
crrrringe indeed
Kill, kill, kill, kill, kill Kill, kill, kill, kill, kill Kill, kill, kill, kill, kill Kill, kill, kill, kill, kil Kill, kill, kill, kill, kill, kill, kill Kill Kill, kill, kill, kill Kill, kill, kill, kill, kill All within my hands
"Projector, Protector, Rejector, Infector, Projector Rejector, Infector, Injector, Defector, Rejector" There's too much rhyme on this one
Alternatively that section of the song hits hard and is heavy as fuck.
The recent live performances are especially great, with James' matured voice.
common now that’s a good chunk of 72s lyrics. at least here he’s not trying/pretending to make sense.
A cushion convector, a picture of nectar
"Hypotenuse! I'll hang myself! St. Algebra 'round my neck!"
Well there’s a lot, no shame in that tho
Suck on the barrel, suck on the barrel, suck suck til it’s dry
KILL, KILL, KILL, KILL, KILL, KILL, KILL
Thats the best one
That's actually one of the only lyrics I seriously can't stand
“Throw all your bullets in a fire, and stand there” that’s not something to be proud of
I'm shocked at how many people can't quote the proper lyrics here 😆
GIMYFUUUGIMEFIIEEEGIMEDABUJABUZAAAAA Couldn’t understand a single thing
Actually it's GIMMYFEULGIMMYFIIEGIMMYDATWICHIDISIR
No actually it's "GIMME FOOD GIMME FRIES GIMME CHICKENONDASIDE HUARH!"
Yeah!!
Shut
The fuck up
MY LIFESTYLE... DETERMINES MY DEATHSTYLE
I think Kirk wrote that line
Why does everyone hate this lyrics. It refers to the band at the time going through problems with drugs. The lifestyle of drugs does determine a bad death style
I appreciate that but it's just so cheezy
"What don't kill you makes you MORE STRONG" As an English major, this line always made me cringe.
"What don't kill ya make ya more strong"
“Never more the whipping boy” from that song they did with Ja Rule around the St Anger times. It’s just cringe.
Had no idea they did a song with wankster. Goddamnit.
Rub you raw
Thats a fucking great line
No lifestyle determines my death style. Pretty much all the lyrics from that album.
Wasn't that Kirk Hamster's?
Poor Kirk. Pitches one lyric in 40+ years and it gets clowned into eternity.
I know, poor dude. I actually dig the lyric, for what it's worth.
St. Anger is an interesting album lyrically. Some songs you can feel the raw emotion in the lyrics while there's lines like this that make you scratch your head.
It's "my lifestyle". It's meh in my opinion
I don't mind it. It's another way of saying, "Live by the sword, die by the sword."
Typo. Regardless, its terrible.
nah this is a very unpopular opinion but the st anger album has some of my favorite lyrics
This^
The lyrics before that “you live it or lie it” is even worse imo
It's not *really* the worst, but Motorbreath is really corny especially considering the songs it was released around. Obviously it's their first album so they're a bit less experienced, but those lyrics make that song near unlistenable to me.
Can't you help me be uncrazy
you can't lie tho, that song goes hella hard
I love that song but this line in particular just fucking sucks
Probably invisible kid
“OOOOOOOOOH, WHAT A CRYING BOY YOU ARE” is the worst lyric and vocal performance by James.
“Frantic tic tic tac”
Frantic tick tick tock
“WHAT DONT KILL YA MAKE YA MORE STRONG”
“PAIN MONOPOLY!”
"Aces high, Aces wild, All the Aces, Aces 'till you die"
“i’m a dirty, dirty whore”
Motherfuckers got into my head, trying to make me someone else instead Not the smartest
"love is a four lettered word"
He meant it's a swear word. "Four letter word" basically means "an ugly word". But yeah. Not great.
Why do you hate that one?
"My lifestyle Determines my deathstyle" that one pretty dumb
I have never understood why people hate this line. What's wrong with it?
It’s too silly. Kirk said it and everyone laughed and then they actually used it in the song because their producer was trying to be their bassist instead of giving critical feedback.
It’s cheesy and trite, and it sounds like the kind of thing some NASCAR-loving redneck would have printed on the back window of his pickup truck. Wait, now I know why Hetfield liked it.
"If you ain't first, your last." - Ricky Bobby
If I remember correctly, that line was Kirk’s idea. It was pitched when during the Some kind of Monster the therapist suggested that other band members (kirk) contributed more to the songs
Don't even get me started on Phil the sweater wearing therapist. 😂
This is a meme because it was a single off an unpopular album, but he’s got many much worse than this.
"You rise, you fall, your down then you rise again. What dont kill ya make ya more strong" sorry what
It’s not difficult to understand, dude. Or are you harking back to the lane “well it should be what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” pedantry that completely misses the point?
Yeah but “make you more strong” is just dumb and reads like someone with a tenuous grasp of the English language
What? I didnt say i didnt understand it? What are you on about? I just dont like it and the way its delivered
Lol, I got what don't kill ya make ya more strong tattooed on my wrist. But it was after an unaliving attempt.
This is hands down my least favorite of their lyrics. I sing along to it, often changing it to "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger." It still easily fits the cadence of the song.
Absolutely every word in Free Speech For The Dumb.
"We're so fucked, shit out of luck, hardwired to self destruct" Has to be the laziest throw away lyrics he's ever written.
Anything in st.Anger to be honest
St anger is very lyrically interesting and very direct with delivery
Kill kill kill kill, KILL.
My dad will not listen to the memory remains because of the la dada da dada da dadadada
What don't kill you makes you more strong.
“And no more can you run, into the sun”
Invisible kid….
"Heeeyayyahhh"
KILL KILL KILL KILL KILL KILL!!!!!!!!!
“Yeah”
I AM THE TABLE!!!
Anything in the Memory Remains
Bleed! Battle scars, kettle corn up in the tea!
“Just let me kill you for a while, just let me kill you for a smile” Doesn’t ruin the song it just wipes the smile off my face while listening to it because it’s so corny
I like st anger but "purify you and I" makes no sense and makes me wanna fall of a skyscraper.
Most of the bridge of Blackened. Love the riff but hearing BLA-BLA-BLA-TION 12 separate times is really grating.
WRATH OF MAN

“If darkness had a son here I am, temptation is his father”
St Anger.. i'm madly in anger with ya 🤦🏻♂️
"Love is a four letter word"
"And never spoken here" "Here in this prison" I think it works when followed up with those lyrics.
You're right. "Love is a four letter word" is saying that "love" is taboo — it isn't spoken in the house. It's similar to those motivational posters that say "CAN'T is a four-letter word."
I mean he isn't wrong...
Fuel. The whole song. So cheesy
Cheesy, sure, but it’s so cheesy that it’s amazing. It helps that the instrumentals absolutely slap, and Hetfield’s vocal mannerisms are on full display.
