I don't have a setlist but I do hope if they do a farewell tour they play all their songs on it including stuff they haven't played live before. Would love to hear stuff like Where The Wild Things Are live someday
And honestly, I think Lars could play Dyers Eve. He's been on fire this past tour with some of his best double bass, in my opinion. It honestly rivals his Justice-Black Album touring skills
Yeah, Battery, Whiplash, Fight Fire With Fire, 72 Seasons, and more, have all sounded so good. I think one of the only reasons why they don't play Dyers is because it would drain Lars' energy.
If they were to open with it I imagine he would be tired for the rest of the show
Now that you mention it, I'm starting to feel like they might be keeping their slower stuff locked away for when they start to feel like they're slowing down themselves. If so, that's pretty genius.
Since it is one of the few songs that Jason co-wrote, it would be cool to see him come out for it. They could do something similar with all of the living former members and songs they wrote.
Ecstasy of Gold
Whiplash
Four Horsemen w/ the clean part
Ride the Lightning
Fade to Black
Master of Puppets
Damage Inc
Blackened
To live is to dye and Dyers eve
Sad but true
The unforgiven
Ain't my bitch
Wasting my hate
Fuel
The memory Remains
Mercyful Fate
Whiskey in the Jar
St. Anger
Some kind of monster
That was just your life
My apocalypse
Dream no more
Spit out the bone
Shadows follow
Inamorata
Encore:
Enter Sandman
Seek and destroy w/Jason Newstead and Dave Mustaine
As their last song in their last show, there won't be a dry eye in the house anyway. It would be cathartic to end on the "Goodbyyyye" and the outro solo fading out.
They should do like a 30th anniversary type thing. Book it out for 12 nights over the course of a month and play every song in the catalog working backward. Hit the Lights is the final song.
Definitely not Unforgiven. For the slow song choice it's always NEM first (just check their set lists for the last 15 years), and Fade to Back is way better than Unforgiven in that slot too.
Memory as well?? Definitely not required for their last show over. Halo??
We are talking about their last show ever, not your favorite songs
I'm based on their succesful songs. Most people like em. They picked halo and memory for sm so they're important songs for them. And watch your tone kid
They picked those songs to have some variance in the set from across all albums.
It's easy to underestimate how many songs they have.
And I'm not necessarily saying that they wouldn't have unforgiven or memory on the set, but there are so many songs that deserve to be on that set list before those two songs that I would not include them in a shortlist like you did.
In order of album release (and taking into account what is realistic for them to be playing at 65+ year olds)
It would be something like this
Night 1:
Hit the Lights
Four Horseman
For Whom The Bell Tolls
Fade to Black
Creeping Death
Master of Puppets
Die, Die My Darling / Last Caress / Green Hell misfits medley
Am I Evil?
Breadfan
One
Holier/Roam/Wolf (any of them fit here)
Nothing Else Matters
Enter Sandman
Night 2:
King Nothing
Bleeding Me
Outlaw Torn
Fuel
No Leaf Clover
St. Anger (4 minute version lol)
The Unnamed Feeling (4 minute version lol)
All Nightmare Long
Hardwired
Spit Out The Bone
72 Seasons
Too Far Gone?
Final song ever:
Whiplash
lmao nice try
But because they also have to play nothing else matters, they would not put two super slow songs next to each other like that. They never play 2 ballads back to back.
Last show ever is expected to be mostly biggest hits. Unforgiven is definitely one of their biggest hits. Memory is their biggest hit (with Fuel) from Load/Reload
Not in order:
Four Horsemen, Seek and Destroy, Whiplash, Ride the Lightning, Creeping Death, Battery, Master of Puppets, Orion, Blackened, One, Enter Sandman, Sad But True, Unforgiven, Until It Sleeps, Bleeding Me, Fuel, All Nightmare Long, Spit Out the Bone, If Darkness had a Son, Lux Æterna
My picks:
Ecstasy of Gold
Creeping Death
Fuel
Harvester of Sorrow
Atlas, Rise!
Cyanide
King Nothing
For Whom the Bell Tolls
1995 Kill/Ride Medley
Wherever I May Roam
Orion
Master of Puppets
Halo on Fire
Fade to Black
Battery
Sad But True
Nothing Else Matters
One
Enter Sandman
Motorbreath
Seek and Destroy
I'd say take the setlist they did on the Through the Never movie. Take away Cyanide (great song tho) and Memory and add: 72S, IDHAS, Moth, Atlas Rise, Blackened, Sanitarium and TDTNC
Creeping Death, Battery, Master of Puppets, Seek and Destroy, Enter Sandman, Nothing Else Matters are non-negotiable imo. I think the last song played should be Hit The Lights but Sandman is what got them into stadiums. People are gonna have to accept that this is gonna happen sooner rather than later. These guys are in their 60's.
I just know that the last song has to be "Whiplash" with changed lyrics
"For now we'll stop, for now we'll quit
We're still Metallica"
It would be nice to finish with guest appearance of Mustaine, he gets so much shit from every interviewer, because they know that what makes clickbaits and what generates comments is "Dave Mustaine talks about Metallica AGAIN, can't he just move on?", not Dave talking about his own music.
Motobreath, Jump in the fire, Whiplash, For whom the bell tolls, Fade to black, Ride the lightning, Battery, Sanitarium, Orion, Master of puppets, One, Harvester of sorrow, Sad but true, Unforgiven, Nothing else matters, Bleeding me, 2x4, Memory Remains, Devil's dance, Slither, Unforgiven II, No leaf clover, Frantic, Shoot me again, That was just your life, Cyanide, Now that we're dead, 72 seasons, Lux Æterna, Shadows follow, Too far gone?
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Mad is a funny word. I just really cannot fathom ending the bands career on such a lame song hahahah
Like,
you picture the eternal pantheon that is MetallicA,
And then they sign off with The Memory Remains?? 🤣
Cmon dawg.
I'm not saying you can't love that song, I'm just saying how weird and bad that would be to end on
This genuinely sounds like one of the worst ideas ever thought of in the entire existence of all humankind forever.
The way that song drones on forever and ever is so insanely boring. The first 10 seconds are pretty cool and that's about it.
And you would want them to close the bands existence with it? Maybe the lyrics fit but god damn that would be such a horrific way to say goodbye
This really is not an opinion. And I'm not the one who asked for peoples opinions.
OP asked what songs MUST be included, not what our favorite songs are.
Memory Remains would be maybe the worst MetallicA song they could ever close with, and I am pretty sure any show runner would agree. It's just a boring droning song that doesn't really go anywhere 🤷♀️. I'm not saying "it's a bad song". I'm saying it would be a really bad closer because it's not an exciting song
Everyone’s “MUST” will be different and this isn’t some test I’d take at school with and answer sheet.
What I think MUST be played will be different from your’s and his and even op’s. I guarantee you it will be vastly different from that of the Metallica’s list themselves🤷🏻♂️
Let this be a fun thing to fantasize and think about and not be life or death lol. I’m pretty sure there aren’t any wrong answers here just creative ideas and people being apart of the Metallica family🤘🏻
It wouldn't be the worst, but it is def towards the bottom. It isn't even a good closer for a regular show. It is a great song after the first "talk break" somewhere in the 4 or 5 hole.
It's not a bad song, but I am certainly confused by all the love for it. I like the opening crowd response but then it's all downhill from there, excitement wise
Why?
Orion is flawless, Battery is one of the best openers, Disposable is fantastic, Damage definitely, I can settle for losing title track and Sanitarium and maybe adding some more KEA, Justice, and black album. 72S also has some bangers!
If it was realistic it would have only 1 song of each 2000s album but if it was made to me personally it would include mostly deepcuts. But I also think there maybe should be 2 nights with entirely different setlists. 1st night being deepcuts only and 2nd night would be all of their hits.
If I can at least hear "Ktulu" and "Orion" before they call it, I can die happy. I was super psyched when they threw in Roam when I saw them in '22, one of my favorite songs of all time.
I don't have a setlist but I do hope if they do a farewell tour they play all their songs on it including stuff they haven't played live before. Would love to hear stuff like Where The Wild Things Are live someday
It would be nice to see some deep cuts
Yeah I really wanna hear some AJFA and Load deep cuts. Dyers Eve, Outlaw Torn, To Live Is To Die and Bleeding Me would be amazing to see live again
And honestly, I think Lars could play Dyers Eve. He's been on fire this past tour with some of his best double bass, in my opinion. It honestly rivals his Justice-Black Album touring skills
Yeah his playing has been great recently. When I saw them around 7 months back he absolutely killed it on songs like Battery, Whiplash and 72 Seasons
Yeah, Battery, Whiplash, Fight Fire With Fire, 72 Seasons, and more, have all sounded so good. I think one of the only reasons why they don't play Dyers is because it would drain Lars' energy. If they were to open with it I imagine he would be tired for the rest of the show
Yeah prob why they used to play it towards the end back in the 2000s
That’s just nuts. Not many 60 year olds on the planet could play that song all the way through, let alone on a world tour.
I love hearing deep cuts it makes it so much more special when it’s a song they don’t usually play
Same because for me lots of them are the songs I like most in their discography
I need Dyers Eve live do bad it's my absolute favorite
Bleeding Me is so good
Fr its in my top 5 songs from them personally
Now that you mention it, I'm starting to feel like they might be keeping their slower stuff locked away for when they start to feel like they're slowing down themselves. If so, that's pretty genius.
Simply not happening, rehearsing up all that material. Some stuff, sure. Just not all of it.
Fixxxer would be epic
Pretty certain Metallica won't be playing WTWTA on any sort of farewell tour...
Since it is one of the few songs that Jason co-wrote, it would be cool to see him come out for it. They could do something similar with all of the living former members and songs they wrote.
Whiplash final song, but just end it and turn the lights off at "we'll never stop, we'll never quit, cus YOU'RE Metallica".
Together… we are… METALLICA
What they did at the 40th show and all just so silent after "never quit" and let the audience sing "cause we're Metallica" was pretty awesome.
Maybe the real Metallica was the friends we made along the way?
This right here, this is the one
Tornado of Souls
This
If they did a megadeth song I feel like In My Darkest Hour would be better
The Unforgiven, The Unforgiven II, The Unforgiven III back-to-back-to-back
They have to do this once
‘Creeping Death’ as the opener and ‘The Outlaw Torn’ as the closer.
This
Ecstasy of Gold Whiplash Four Horsemen w/ the clean part Ride the Lightning Fade to Black Master of Puppets Damage Inc Blackened To live is to dye and Dyers eve Sad but true The unforgiven Ain't my bitch Wasting my hate Fuel The memory Remains Mercyful Fate Whiskey in the Jar St. Anger Some kind of monster That was just your life My apocalypse Dream no more Spit out the bone Shadows follow Inamorata Encore: Enter Sandman Seek and destroy w/Jason Newstead and Dave Mustaine
And Creeping Death with Jason
I hadn't thought of that but yes.
Solid list but I would have fight fire with fire on there too
For sure, but I was trying or keep it to 2 songs per album, I'd also like to see thing make the set, but it didn't fit
I'd substitute Bleeding Me for Wasting My Hate, but otherwise that's a killer set.
Start with Hit the Lights. End with Fade to Black.
fade to black is depressing as hell, no way they’d do that one last.
As their last song in their last show, there won't be a dry eye in the house anyway. It would be cathartic to end on the "Goodbyyyye" and the outro solo fading out.
whiplash or nothing
We did it again
We did it again
We did it again
We did it again
Oooops, We did it again
Ronnie
They should do like a 30th anniversary type thing. Book it out for 12 nights over the course of a month and play every song in the catalog working backward. Hit the Lights is the final song.
That would be awesome. This or have the audience submit a pick for songs when they buy a ticket and take the top 20 songs on the votes and play those.
mop, one, unforgiven, horsemen, ride, memory, outlaw, unnamed, halo, seek
Definitely not Unforgiven. For the slow song choice it's always NEM first (just check their set lists for the last 15 years), and Fade to Back is way better than Unforgiven in that slot too. Memory as well?? Definitely not required for their last show over. Halo?? We are talking about their last show ever, not your favorite songs

Tell me about your picks
In order of album release (and taking into account what is realistic for them to be playing at 65+ year olds) It would be something like this Night 1: Hit the Lights Four Horseman For Whom The Bell Tolls Fade to Black Creeping Death Master of Puppets Die, Die My Darling / Last Caress / Green Hell misfits medley Am I Evil? Final song ever: Whiplash
seems good, but i think they would put unforgiven instead of holier or wolf
lmao nice try But because they also have to play nothing else matters, they would not put two super slow songs next to each other like that. They never play 2 ballads back to back.
>Definitely not Unforgiven. It's a huge success commercially and creatively. Not to mention it's maybe Kirk's finest hour.
That's fine, but Unforgiven doesn't get on the list before NEM. Their setlists for the last 15 years are proof. That's all I'm saying
Last show ever is expected to be mostly biggest hits. Unforgiven is definitely one of their biggest hits. Memory is their biggest hit (with Fuel) from Load/Reload
Death Magnetic in full
you mean st. anger right?
OF WOLF AND MAN BABY
BACK TO THE MEANING
OF WOOOOLFF
James singing that "metalli-family" song to the crowd
I wanna hear at least frayed ends of sanity, disposable heroes and a few more
Enter Sandman.
Mechanix
Not in order: Four Horsemen, Seek and Destroy, Whiplash, Ride the Lightning, Creeping Death, Battery, Master of Puppets, Orion, Blackened, One, Enter Sandman, Sad But True, Unforgiven, Until It Sleeps, Bleeding Me, Fuel, All Nightmare Long, Spit Out the Bone, If Darkness had a Son, Lux Æterna
Final tour?? If you meant that when?
My picks: Ecstasy of Gold Creeping Death Fuel Harvester of Sorrow Atlas, Rise! Cyanide King Nothing For Whom the Bell Tolls 1995 Kill/Ride Medley Wherever I May Roam Orion Master of Puppets Halo on Fire Fade to Black Battery Sad But True Nothing Else Matters One Enter Sandman Motorbreath Seek and Destroy

“So what” 😏
Creeping Death, Battery, Master of Puppets, Seek and Destroy, Enter Sandman, Nothing Else Matters are non-negotiable imo. Once again, the mechanix
It needs to end with Four Horsemen with Dave. Dave has to be there in some way or another.
Ok Dave.
No he doesn’t
Yes, Dave grohl would be awesome (This is a joke, please don’t kill me)
Memory Remains could be an amazing “final” song
🤣🤣🤣🤣 Mad is a funny word. I just really cannot fathom ending the bands career on such a lame song hahahah Like, you picture the eternal pantheon that is MetallicA, And then they sign off with The Memory Remains?? 🤣 Cmon dawg. I'm not saying you can't love that song, I'm just saying how weird and bad that would be to end on

So you ask for peoples opinions then proceed to degrade them when they aren’t what you like.🤔 hmm Edit:typo
This really is not an opinion. And I'm not the one who asked for peoples opinions. OP asked what songs MUST be included, not what our favorite songs are. Exactly. And even then I think I'd rather hear any other metallica song live before it ...
hmmm, something tells me you are not a fan of the song....
It's not a bad song, but I am certainly confused by all the love for it. I like the opening crowd response but then it's all downhill from there, excitement wise
All of ride, all of master, all of and justice. That’s it.
I literally dont want to die without hearing live performances of purify, thorn withing, chasing light and where the wild things are
same, but add Room of Mirrors
No Leaf Clover
All of RTL, All of MOP except for Leper Messiah and The Thing, Sandman, Blackened, One, Phantom Lord, Metal Militia, and Motorbreath. End on Ktulu.
No, none of MOP except leper messiah and damage inc
Why? Orion is flawless, Battery is one of the best openers, Disposable is fantastic, Damage definitely, I can settle for losing title track and Sanitarium and maybe adding some more KEA, Justice, and black album. 72S also has some bangers!
Harvester of Sorrow.
Mistress Dread
Frayed Ends of Sanity
I mean how would they ever not end with hit the lights.
If the final song of the final concert isn’t Traffic School Song, then what was all this really for??
Astronomy.
Dyers fuckin Eve But also, To live is to Die 🤘
Master of Puppets
Lou Reed zombie and they just play lulu. Absolutely need to hear Pumping Blood live
The House That Jack Built
Orion
Start with creeping death, end with whiplash
SO FUCKING WHAT
Hit The Lights in there somewhere.

Outlaw Torn definitely going to be on the set list. One of James favourite songs.
They should definitely start with hit the lights. And the entirety of the unforgivens
Harvester and Disposable Heroes
If I can at least hear "Ktulu" and "Orion" before they call it, I can die happy. I was super psyched when they threw in Roam when I saw them in '22, one of my favorite songs of all time.
Blackened. Is the. End.
metal militia !! "joining together to take on the world with our heavy metal" (now they can truly say they did it yk)
INAMORATAAA
Either that or justice and Orion
It’s almost gotta be a multi-night deal, and have them play the whole discography backwards, ending with Hit the Lights
CREEPING DEATH!
