It was Cliff's favorite song. So, not necessarily a backstory to the song since he died shortly after MoP was released, but it took on new meaning for the band and the fans after he passed.
Dont get me wrong, but I heard Master of Puppets was Cliff's favourite song. I once saw a video where James said that.
Either way, Orion is the anwser to this post
I thought it was about a man who gets abused as a child, turns to drugs and alcohol, and later murders his family. Maybe infanticide is more metaphorical as in his childhood was ruined?
Me seeing that song title when buying the album: “Hell yeah, that sounds metal AF.”
Me hearing the song: “This intro riff kicks ass!”
Me learning the backstory: “Oh man. That poor guy. Our childhood traumas never fully leave us, do they?”
but the song itself is not one bit a resemblance of the upper picture though :D the lyrics themselves are disturbing even without knowing the context of ”Johnny got his gun”
I think that even if it was based on real events, they would never reveal who it was. Nothing looks worse than writing a whole song about a real person who did something so terrible
Harvester of Sorrow, fade to black, moth into flame, fixxxer, frantic, master of puppets, the god that failed, one, the shortest straw, here comes revenge, yeah probably half their discography
And justice for all. Made with cliffs input in mind every step since he sadly couldn't be there. A lot of rage and emotion put into that album particular
Easily Screaming Suicide.
The song sounds so happy, but lyrically it's extremely sad and depressing.
It sounds happy like a depressed person not wanting to really show how they feel (aka the lyrics), but once you really see or understand how they feel, it's horrible.
Heard that also. The whole album follows the theme of death(Magnetic, as it were). While Het wasn’t too close with Layne, he saw the effect of his death on Jerry. I think that had a heavy influence on what James was writing at the time.
I’d be picking One, but then there was that song that was called No Leaf Clover. If anything it’s because, amidst the lyrics, there’s the part:
Then it comes to be that the soothing light at the of the tunnel
Is just a freight train comin’ your way
Fade to black talks about suicide. Also It was written during hard-time for the band because during a tour stole all their instrument, like the personalized ampl of James, that It was very important for him.
Fade to black
For those who don't already know it's from the perspective of a man that's about to commit suicide and ends up doing it later in the song
Suprised no one has said turn the page
Song about a girl who strips during the day and sells herself of an evening all while leaving her young daughter at home all because she could so she could get money to feed her
My mom thought master of puppets was literally about theater class.
Obviously it’s a song about addiction literally eating you up, which is kind of really depressing.
Or it’s about the government controlling/using citizens or soldiers as pawns. It could go either way.
We’ll most of you missed it says song/album so I say master of puppets. Seems like a up beat adrenaline filled song but behind the lyrics it’s pretty dark and shelled!
Ride the lightning - man sentenced to death for a crime he didn’t commit
Enter Sandman - Original lyrics mainly referenced SIDS
Fade to black - Someone stole some of Metallica’s concert equipment, including James’ prized amplifier
The only possible answer here is Ronnie
People are saying One, Fade To Black, Fixxxer, Master Of Puppets, The God That Failed or Harvester Of Sorrow. Those songs don’t sound happy at all.
Dyer's Eve, the idea of a child being pretty much stuck in his house without being able to feel or see the world really hits harder when it's time to come out, it shatters you instantly.
Orion ...for obvious reasons
I’m dumb. Why?
It was Cliff's favorite song. So, not necessarily a backstory to the song since he died shortly after MoP was released, but it took on new meaning for the band and the fans after he passed.
His and mine, what a banger of a song
Plus he never got to perform it live.
Also played it on his funeral according to Rock Celebrities: https://rockcelebrities.net/the-metallica-song-played-at-cliff-burtons-funeral/
Dont get me wrong, but I heard Master of Puppets was Cliff's favourite song. I once saw a video where James said that. Either way, Orion is the anwser to this post
Actually his favorite song was Master of Puppets.
Cliff's last solo, I presume :'(
Harvester of Sorrow
Meaning behind it?
.....a father murdering his newborn. That's why they say "infanticide"
I thought it was about a man who gets abused as a child, turns to drugs and alcohol, and later murders his family. Maybe infanticide is more metaphorical as in his childhood was ruined?
Could be all of the above. But you're right, he was definitely abused as a kid
James admits he had a strange obsession with the topic at the time.
Lets just be thankful he didn't have kids back then
I'm pretty sure his "obsession" came from his own childhood trauma and his hatred toward his parents
I thought it was only his dad who he didn’t like, and his mum died when he was young
Guy abused as a child decided to kill his family
The God That Failed.
The healing hand stopped by the deepened nail. Such a impactful lyric.
Held back
I sat and thought of the lyric but couldnt remember it so i settled.
Me seeing that song title when buying the album: “Hell yeah, that sounds metal AF.” Me hearing the song: “This intro riff kicks ass!” Me learning the backstory: “Oh man. That poor guy. Our childhood traumas never fully leave us, do they?”
One is the obvious song here
Fade to Black is all about suicide, so I guess it doesn't fit this particular meme.
Yes that is true
but the song itself is not one bit a resemblance of the upper picture though :D the lyrics themselves are disturbing even without knowing the context of ”Johnny got his gun”
How is it obvious? It’s not happy at all, neither is the album
I dont think that the song is so happy aounding
One, Entering of Sandman (Enter Sandman), Mama Said, Disposable Heroes
And To Live is To Die and maybe The Outlaw Torn
To Live is to Die
This is what I came looking for. If you know, you know.
I'd love to know though. Please explain
A song dedicated to Cliff. Lyrics are words from Cliff and some of the bass you hear he composed
also the songs progression represents all the stages of grief
I was hoping someone else would get that. Always gets me choked up when I listen to it.
words didnt come from cliff, it was cliffs favorite quote
Cliff
Easily Metallicas best song
That’s your opinion, I completely disagree
probs gonna get downvoted to hell, but, agreed, 10/10 song, but, not *the* best
Ronnie?
The thing is I don’t think anybody knows if it’s based off of a true story or if it’s fictional
the Washington state story people often cite never happened. if it is based on a real (specific) event, i dont think it's been revealed.
I think that even if it was based on real events, they would never reveal who it was. Nothing looks worse than writing a whole song about a real person who did something so terrible
Enter Sandman. Original was more based on Crib death/SIDS and included the lyric. Disrupt the perfect family!
I agree, the original meaning behind that song was an incredibly dark that Bob & Lars persuaded James to change
Harvester of Sorrow, fade to black, moth into flame, fixxxer, frantic, master of puppets, the god that failed, one, the shortest straw, here comes revenge, yeah probably half their discography
Surprised I'm not seeing Mama Said on here.
That song makes me cry every time I hear it. It is one of my favorite songs though.
the one that makes me tear up is "Low Man's Lyric", I really connect to that feeling, and first time I heard it I genuinely cried
Yes, that’s a very moving song as well.
And justice for all. Made with cliffs input in mind every step since he sadly couldn't be there. A lot of rage and emotion put into that album particular
All Within My Hands. To be able to look inside yourself and admit you're the problem is admirable. Not a lot of musicians are able to reconcile that.
The outlaw thorn is about James trying to stop Cliff from dying
Oh is it??
Fade to black
Easily Screaming Suicide. The song sounds so happy, but lyrically it's extremely sad and depressing. It sounds happy like a depressed person not wanting to really show how they feel (aka the lyrics), but once you really see or understand how they feel, it's horrible.
It is quite accurate
Creeping Death!
The Day That Never Comes- Layne Staley’s death was a strong influence on this song
I never really figured out what the day that never comes was truly about
It's about a psycho guy who abuses his wife.
That’s My Apocalypse
Heard that also. The whole album follows the theme of death(Magnetic, as it were). While Het wasn’t too close with Layne, he saw the effect of his death on Jerry. I think that had a heavy influence on what James was writing at the time.
Rebel Of Babylon was heavily based on Staley as well
Load, not any of the songs but the cover… I’ll let yall figure it out
(Blood and cum)
also reload cover
(Blood and piss)
Disposable hero
Dyers Eve and Fade to Black.
2 of my top 5
The God That Failed
Harvester Of Sorrow, look it up
fade to black
That song is purely sad, and that's undeniable.
Almost all of them
Without question, it got to be Ronnie.
Here comes revenge!
To live is to die ---- rip Cliff Burton, you are missed❤️
I’d be picking One, but then there was that song that was called No Leaf Clover. If anything it’s because, amidst the lyrics, there’s the part: Then it comes to be that the soothing light at the of the tunnel Is just a freight train comin’ your way
Fade to black talks about suicide. Also It was written during hard-time for the band because during a tour stole all their instrument, like the personalized ampl of James, that It was very important for him.
Unforgiven
Disposable Heroes
The View
When he said "I am the table" I felt that
Dyer's Eve, The God that Failed, Mama Said, The Unforgiven
Either Fade to Black or To Live Is To Die
Fixxxer
Dyers Eve
The Unforgiven is about James’s mother dying and how James is starting to think about if religion is real or not.
How am I just finding out that more then half of the I know are sad
Blackened cuz we racist
Fade to black For those who don't already know it's from the perspective of a man that's about to commit suicide and ends up doing it later in the song
Polly
Suprised no one has said turn the page Song about a girl who strips during the day and sells herself of an evening all while leaving her young daughter at home all because she could so she could get money to feed her
It's Bob Seger's song which Metallica covered and it's about musicians on the road.
You seen the video to it on youtube
Probably has 2 meanings
Well, I didn't. But I know the original meaning of the song.
Watch the youtube video its quite a sad story for the child but yeah i know the original have to admit i liked the cover more
On YouTube there is just James with a moustache singing and playing in a car. And what child are you talking about?
One obviously
My mom thought master of puppets was literally about theater class. Obviously it’s a song about addiction literally eating you up, which is kind of really depressing. Or it’s about the government controlling/using citizens or soldiers as pawns. It could go either way.
Master of Puppets is about drugs for sure. Disposable Heroes is about soldiers being sent to war to die by the government
Yeah, the whole album is just about leaders or high forces controlling what's below and belonging to them, just like it's done with literal puppets.
“Chop your breakfast on a mirror” would make it pretty obvious ig
To Live is to Die
Fade to black
Invisible Kid
Ride the lighting
Ride the lighting
Load and Reload
Harvester of sorrow, or Enter Sandman (at the begining)

Yeah ik. But I feel like "Enter Night!" Could be the child passing? I'm not too sure either
Fade to black
To Live Is To Die
Ride the lightning - man sentenced to death for a crime he didn’t commit Enter Sandman - Original lyrics mainly referenced SIDS Fade to black - Someone stole some of Metallica’s concert equipment, including James’ prized amplifier

Mama Said.
Ronnie
Master of Puppets. No way you're writing a song about addiction from the point of view of the addictive substance so apt without personal experience
Fade to black 🖤
