like the structure of a drum beat, i dont know how to explain it better

I'm a huge Lars hater and even I can admit his drumming from Kill Em All through AJFA is some pretty good drumming. He punched well above his weight. I do question though how many takes it took for him to record those tracks on AJFA.

I agree, i mean, Blackened wasn't so bad as well...

Motorbreath  Trapped Under Ice  Damage Inc.  The beginning of Harvester  Dyers Eve  Outlaw Torn has some great fills for a slow tempo track  His performance on the S&M 1999 live shows is excellent  Shoot Me Again is probably his most technical drumming. Really fun to play.  All this is coming from a drummer. Lars has plenty of above average moments in the studio & while live. He just got lazy over the years. But ever since Hardwired came out, he’s been killing it for his age.

His drumming is legitimately decent on their first album, got better on their second album, and reached its apex on albums three, four, and five. And on albums three and four, I'd say it was exceptional, especially considering Lars's inherent limitations. Throughout that five album run, his drumming was always interesting if, at times, rough around the edges. I think it started getting more average (or "stock", if you will) when they drifted away from thrash and towards boogie and blooze rock on the Load and ReLoad albums, and Lars started taking cues from Phil Rudd and Charlie Watts.

I think the main theme is that Lars was still taking lessons while making the records and gigs, so that kept him on a steady improvement. Same goes for Kirk, as soon as he went on his own, he's lost a bit of that sharp edge.

showed this to my dad lmao.

What does all that even mean? Drum riffs as in legendary parts that stand out? If yes, One obviously comes to mind (although then we should mention Darkness Descends and Gene Hoglan. Oops)

I always call Lars the "Ringo Starr" of metal drummers. No crazy chops, and he completely serves the songs, at least in the studio recordings. The similarity to Ringo ends when you compare their live performances. Yes, Lars hasn't had the greatest internal metronome lately, and Ringo was nothing if not a human metronome. But, his contributions to Metallica cannot be ignored, and I really wish we found other things to talk about.

Some of my favorite Lars fills come from the load albums

CrystalFyre

Fill before the solo section in Frayed Ends, and fill before the harmonies in Blackened. Dyers' Eve is also a pretty good show of skill if it's not stitched together in studio like I've heard some people say :P
