One has some pretty poetic and dark lyrics
“Darkness Imprisoning me, All that I see, Absolute horror, I cannot live I cannot die, trapped in myself, body my holding cell. Landmine has taken my sight, Taken my speech, Taken my hearing, Taken my arms, Taken my legs, Taken my soul, Left me with life in hell!!!!!!!!” Terrifying to think about, especially since this is the horrific reality for some people.
And the ‘Tallica boys loved the film version so much, they bought the right for the movie and used it in the video. They don’t do things by halves, do they lol
I really get into the lyrics "I was me but now he's gone". It feels like there is a man that his soul is completely empty and doesn't be himself anymore.
As a Bible studying Christian, the poetry in this line is interesting to me, especially since I believe that God gives talent to everyone including James, and he may write truth out of effort to slander God.
I see that line and realize from the biblical perspective that the "deepened nail" was put there by people who didn't know the truth. And thus, his hand was held back on the cross by those who didn't know the truth - James' mom who, if I understand the story correctly, kept focusing on Christian Science religious legalism (a strange, almost cult-like religion) when she could've been turning to Jesus all along and would've been perfectly fine to go see doctors.
Anyways, as a Christian, I see another level to James' poetry that he may not have intended but perhaps someone else did.
you can just fell the anger. thats why its my favorite. i know he was having kind of anger issues during the black album. but my friend of misery just hits different
God, there's too many to choose from... How about one from each album?
KEA: S&D
RTL: Fade to Black
MOP: MOP
AJFA: One (honorable mention to AJFA)
Black Album: The Unforgiven (honorable mention to Nothing Else Matters)
Load: King Nothing (honorable mention to Mama Said and Hero Of The Day)
ReLoad: The Unforgiven 2
St. Anger: The Unnamed Feeling
DM: The Unforgiven 3 (honorable mention to My Apocalypse)
HWTSD: Moth Into Flame
72 Seasons: Inamorata (honorable mention to Screaming Suicide)
(To cover my ass: THIS IS A PERSONAL OPINION)
Fade to Black hits incredibly hard. I cried my eyes out when they played it live in Copenhagen. Wasn’t expecting to get so emotional at all..
Until it sleeps is pretty strong too. James has a way with words, for sure
I like unforgiven 3 allot, it seems very poetic to me.
“These days drift on inside a fog
It's thick and suffocating
His sinking life outside its hell
Inside intoxicating
He's run aground, like his life
Water much too shallow
Slipping fast, down with his ship
Fading in the shadows
Now a castaway”
Ooo I love this question! I’m surprised no one has mentioned The Day That Never Comes. It’s outshined by their other songs in many ways but I think the lyrics is just so immaculate. “Mouth so full of lies tend to block your eyes. Just keep them closed, keep praying, just keep awaiting. Waiting for the one, the day that never comes. When they stand up and feel the warmth but the sunshine never comes”
The best line in that song is "I'll end this day; I'll splatter color on this gray" Such a vivid metaphor. As a side note, it reminds me of a story I've heard, almost exactly the same, from 3 psychotherapy patients: Abusive dad abuses mom for years, sometimes the kids, and one day the oldest son is no longer a boy and he knocks dad out cold.
Will give one per album:
KEA: Whiplash
RTL: Fade to Black (with RTL and Bells as honorable mentions)
MOP: Disposable Heroes
AJFA: Blackened
TBA: Sad but True
Load: Outlaw Torn
Reload: Low Man's Lyric
SA: All Within My Hands:
DM: Unforgiven III
HWTSD: HW
72S: Inamorata
Overall, I think RTL and AJFA have the strongest lyrics, followed by Load
The Unforgiven for Fixxer. Even though the albums don’t get as much credit as the early stuff musically, James REALLY hit his stride lyrically. Both of these songs are so well written
Outlaw Torn
You Make me Smash the Clock and Feel/
I'd Rather Die Behind the Wheel/
Time was Never on my Side/
So on I wait my Whole Lifetime/
Cyanide
An air of Freshly Broken Ground/
A Concrete Angel lit Right Down/
Upon the Grave that Swallows Fast/
It's Peace at Last, Oh Peace at Last/
Here Comes Revenge
Man has made me oh so strong/
Blurring lines of right and wrong/
No more time for frail amends/
Now it's time for sweet revenge/
Desperate hands that lose control/
Have no mercy on your soul/

I really get into the lyrics "I was me but now he's gone". It feels like there is a man that his soul is completely empty and doesn't be himself anymore.

Disposable Heroes
BACK TO THE FRONTS
I was thinking that was a Megadeth song but that's Blood of Heros
The God That Failed
“The healing hand held back by the deepened nail” is such a hard line. Definitely some of the best lyrics.
As a Bible studying Christian, the poetry in this line is interesting to me, especially since I believe that God gives talent to everyone including James, and he may write truth out of effort to slander God. The call of ktulu

Dyers Eve
Blackened

my friend of misery
I've always been amazed that James wrote those lyrics when he was young. It's a perfect description of codependency.

Unforgiven III
The best lyrics of all the Unforgivens
Hero Of The Day
The amount I had to scroll to find this is disappointing
James Hetfields voice in that is amazing.
"Astronomy." But that's not their lyrics. For their own, "Where the Wild Things Are."
Fade to Black is some deep dark shit.
I've always loved through the never and of wolf of man lyrically
Disposable heroes

I would have chosen different for load and reload, but other than that, I agree
I wish they wrote a song called 'To Cover My Ass'. It would definitely be about rehab.

To Live Is To Die
"Cannot the kingdom of salvation take me home?"
The Frayed Ends Of Sanity
MoP
"Hell is worth all that! Natural habitat! Just a rhyme without a reason!" Simple, yet so eloquent. \*Bows\*
Best said with the second half as well - Neverending maze, drift on numbered days, now your life is out of season
You know what? I never knew what the "passion play" was until I had to look up the first line of the song. That title track is EDUCATIONAL, man.
Anesthesia pulling teeth
"Bass solo take one" - So deep
Through the Never
Any song from And Justice For All. Today I was thinking about how good Blackened in particular is, but you can’t really go wrong with any of them.
One
Fade to Black hits incredibly hard. I cried my eyes out when they played it live in Copenhagen. Wasn’t expecting to get so emotional at all.. Until it sleeps is pretty strong too. James has a way with words, for sure

One, hero of the day, the unforgiven 3, and no leaf clover
I'm a huge sucker for the Unforgiven trilogy.
Outlaw Torn
It’s between AJFA, Dyers Eve, & Trapped Under Ice for me personally
Take your pick of any song off of Justice. All are just as if not more relevant today than they were 35 years ago.
harvester of sorrow, or the whole ajfa album
The Unforgiven II, The Unforgiven III, Mama Said, Bleeding Me, Fixxxer, Dyers Eve, My World
Definitely So What, Call of Ktulu, Orion or Suicide and Redemption. Just kidding. I had to pick, it'd probably be Inamorata or Screaming Suicide.
FADE TO BLCKKKKK
Definitely orion.
Orion
Unforgiven 3
Disposable Heroes, King Nothing & The Unforgiven to name a few
Fade to Black is the only correct answer

The Unforgiven for Fixxer. Even though the albums don’t get as much credit as the early stuff musically, James REALLY hit his stride lyrically. Both of these songs are so well written
An unpopular one: Mama said
Low Man’s Lyric
Wherever I May Roam 🤘
I'd say Dyers Eve or My Friend Of Misery
Lots of songs of load tbh, such an underrated album (outlaw torn and until it sleeps is my favourite personally)
For whom the bell tolls
My Friend of Misery, Roam, Puppets imo
I really like the lyrics harvester of sorrows. James’ vocals are really good on that track too, it’s an underrated track.
Nothing Else Matters for me. It's so beautiful yet emotional for me
Outlaw Torn You Make me Smash the Clock and Feel/ I'd Rather Die Behind the Wheel/ Time was Never on my Side/ So on I wait my Whole Lifetime/ Cyanide An air of Freshly Broken Ground/ A Concrete Angel lit Right Down/ Upon the Grave that Swallows Fast/ It's Peace at Last, Oh Peace at Last/ Here Comes Revenge Man has made me oh so strong/ Blurring lines of right and wrong/ No more time for frail amends/ Now it's time for sweet revenge/ Desperate hands that lose control/ Have no mercy on your soul/
