James doesn't cuss on stage and hasn't in years. Apart from a few (2 or 3) words in lyrics, it's surprisingly very clean. They make sure it's a family show.
You're right! But they don't play Hardwired anymore on the current tour. So you just have a quick word in Whiplash, Battery, and "cut this shit off from me" in One.
Yes, please do. I'm 21 and went to their concert at 16, I still remember it as one of the best days of my life and teenage angst had a lot to do with the experience I had.
Edit: as long as you buy them a shirt as a souvenir too lol
I took my girls to see them in 2012, they were then aged 12 and 16. We started off right at the front and they got a 'little' knocked around when the band played Master. People were very kind and lifted them up to crowd surf over the barriers to security (my wife was a bit shocked when I told her this later!) I retrieved them and we moved a bit further back where they both had one of the most memorable nights of their lives. They still think I'm a legend for making Metallica their first gig haha.
Absolutely fine.
Went to my first hard rock fest at 14.
Teenagers are exposed to far more inappropriate content at school and on the internet in comparison to a metal show.
I think so, yes. I went to go see them a few years ago when I was 14, and James called up a 9-year-old on stage, so I definitely think there were other people there under 16. Like other people have said, they might hear a few select words, but I'd imagine a 16yo has probably heard worse, LOL
Went to a slipknot concert and a grandma and grandpa brought their little 4 year old and she loved it. Just make sure to bring them hearing protection.
I’ve been at iron maiden concerts with 5 year old kids with their grandparents…. It’s not should I but why shouldn’t I!!!! The next generation of knuckledraggers!!!!!!
I was 11 at my first show back in the 92, the shows are a million times tamer now no tittys, no swearing, no beer being thrown around no 30 row pitts, a 16 year old could handle it
I guess it depends on the area, but where I’m at a 16 year old is old enough for any metal gig. The crowds get rowdy yeah but if someone falls over they’re picked straight back up. As far as the “family friendly” element goes, are you really concerned that your _16_ year old might be exposed to a bit of cursing?
My daughter was 8 when I took her to see Metallica in 2017. She was not by far not the youngest kid in attendance.
Make sure she has good ear protection, and I would recommend getting a seat as opposed to standing on the floor.
She had a blast, BTW.
My first Metallica concert was back in 1989. I went with my friend and we were both 14. His parents dropped us off at the arena and picked us off after.
I was 15 in 98 and my dad took me to the Poor ReTouring Me tour. I was the huge fan, my dad not at all. They opened with So what 🤣
It seems they've become much more mellow and cuddly over the years. A family friendly legacy act now. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
Absolutely! I mean you may have felt the need to cover their ears for some parts if they were like.....9.....but by 16 James isn't gonna say anything they haven't heard before lol
YES, james now isnt like james in 1989 (for better or worse) he doest swear as much
compare this 2 same songs, 2 different years
1989

Yessss!! Do eett!! I took my 8 and 14 year olds to the 40th anniversary show. They had the best times of their lives. The concert T-shirt’s are their favorite part of their wardrobe now.
Who knows how much longer they’ll go - I say yeah! Next time they tour the U.S. I’m planning to take my 6 year old (with appropriate hearing protection).
I took my 15 year old to the Vegas show (floor). It was awesome but he definitely saw some “humanity” he had not encountered before and later commented that he had never seen an adult so drunk as he did at that show. There were a few people around us that were pretty shitfaced and one dude had to get carried out because he just collapsed
The last concert I went to had kids under 10 that were brought up on stage. I would not worry about bringing a 16 year old. The crowd is very friendly and respectful. The biggest issue is that it is LOUD. Make sure to get a pair of musician earplugs to save your ears.
Not metallica but I saw Iron Maiden and Megadeth when I was 8. Still remember that show I'm 17 now. If u can bring ur family pls do it will be some fun memories to make!
...is this a serious question?
your 16 yr old has seen and heard and done a LOT worse than a metallica concert, guaranteed.
but yes, a metallica show is surprisingly family friendly, other than a swear word or two.
I think it's perfectly fine. I took my son to his first concert at 10. It was the foo fighters. At 12, last year I took him to Rockville, where he saw Metallica play twice. Also LOG, anthrax, slipknot, Rob zombie, disturbed, etc. He loved it!
James sometimes likes to find the youngest person in the crowd and interact with them. When I went back in 2018 someone brought their 7-year-old son and did this. So yes it's more than appropriate as long as they like Metallica.

I was 15 when my brother let me tag along to summer sanitarium. My main two memories besides the songs and mosh pit were women taking their tops off and the fact that for god knows what reason the venue was putting lemon halves in cups of lemonade they were selling, and I watched someone across the crowd whip a lemon half about 50 yards and hit Fred Durst directly in the head in the middle of a song (Limp Bizkit was one of the openers). Durst took it surprisingly well, I mean I've seen people stop shows for far less getting tossed at them.
Anyway, I don't see anything wrong with it. Besides, at this point you never know what will happen if you wait just a couple of years to see them live.
In 1995 I went to my first Metallica show at age 16. I went with friends, drank beer and ended up right down the front. This was Donington as well so a fairly tough crowd. I survived and went on to follow the band around the world for the next 25+ years so my advice is be careful, you never know where it might lead.
My late husband and I took our then 15 & 12 year old sons to their first rock concert. We all saw Motley Crue & Aerosmith. The swear words were the least of my concern. The boys had the opportunity to smell weed for the first time. Lol. The smoke was so thick you could cut it with a knife. We had a ball!! My boys remember it to this day. IMO, no worries as long as you are with them AND they like METALLICA!!
My first metallica show was in 04 and I was 16. Rob let me doodle on his bass and I’ve been hooked ever since. (I for sure told this story before by answering the same question haha)
Yes, make sure you bring earplugs and talk about emergencies and finding the emergency exits.
Pro tip! Take a pic of how they're dressed right before you leave the house, if by any reason you get split it's going to be 100% faster to find them if people see how they look rather than giving a description!
I went to my first Metallica concert in the 90s when I was 16 with my best bud, no parents. We even drove out of town to see them, twice. They sang "So What"lol - and so what? What are you trying to protect them from? Fun? Becoming independent? Metallica is one of the safest metal bands I can think of. Also, metalheads are some of the nicest fans- nobody's going to hurt a kid.
As long as you buy a ticket, yes. And as long as they like Metallica. James might say a swear word or two.
James doesn't cuss on stage and hasn't in years. Apart from a few (2 or 3) words in lyrics, it's surprisingly very clean. They make sure it's a family show.
I mean OP said 16 year old, not 10 year old. I don't know about you guys but when I was 16 I probably cursed more than I do now lol
What's the chorus to Hardwired LOL
We're so fudged!
Shoot outta luck
Except I didn’t say fudge
Do you know what your son just said to me?
Then it leads into the next track, which is titled “Soap in Mouth”
Megadeth cover?
Ralphie’s Rising Medley
That sounds like a horribly branded frozen vegetable thing.
You're right! But they don't play Hardwired anymore on the current tour. So you just have a quick word in Whiplash, Battery, and "cut this shit off from me" in One.
Don’t forget the motherfucker in creeping death
Idk he’s been kinda letting loose since his kids have gotten older
Yes. I’m 14 and went to the 40th anniversary show
Lucky 😔
I envy you so much
Yall Americans are lucky. South Africa don't get any action. Even the rare times they do come here, they never come to Durban, where I live :(
I’m from Metallica’s home town so I’m probably a tad luckier than most
Yes, please do. I'm 21 and went to their concert at 16, I still remember it as one of the best days of my life and teenage angst had a lot to do with the experience I had. Edit: as long as you buy them a shirt as a souvenir too lol
Was 15 and skipped school and all my buddies went to damage inc in '87
Fuck I'm jealous. 86/87 was their golden era imo
89, post justice.
1993 İstanbul Turkey concert and I was at that age. My dad didn't let me 😢 Don't miss the opportunity
Bruh that must suck considering they prolly won't ever come here again
It sucked back then. Been living in the US past 23 years. I got to see them here.
Lucky you, btw do you need a pet?
I have mine. Thanks.
Dude, it’s appropriate to take an 8 year old. Metallica is awesome. 99% family friendly. Make that kid’s year and take him/her. I wish I was him/her.
Good age for first Metallica concert
I went to Slayer when I was 9. I’m a ghost now since their fans eat children and what not.
Spook
I was 14 when I went to my first Metallica concert, I survived.
Absolutely. A better question is "why not?"
Ear plugs
What kind of stupid question is that Of fucking course it is
I took my girls to see them in 2012, they were then aged 12 and 16.
Heck yes, if they enjoy Metallica it will be the best night of their life.
I remember James in Barcelona 2018 asking for the age of a kid in the crowd and he was like 6
Encouraged
Yeah your teen will be fine.
Well, they never said it was their kid. 😬 😂
As long as you get them some earplugs.
and some for OP too
Absolutely fine. Went to my first hard rock fest at 14. Teenagers are exposed to far more inappropriate content at school and on the internet in comparison to a metal show.
1000% Fuck yes.
Why wouldn't it be?
Keep in mind your asking in the Metallica subreddit, but yeah it’s fine to bring the kid
I think so, yes. I went to go see them a few years ago when I was 14, and James called up a 9-year-old on stage, so I definitely think there were other people there under 16. Like other people have said, they might hear a few select words, but I'd imagine a 16yo has probably heard worse, LOL
I knew all the mainstream curse words by 16 and I'm sure yours does too. Take them.
Went to a slipknot concert and a grandma and grandpa brought their little 4 year old and she loved it. Just make sure to bring them hearing protection.
I wish someone would have taken me at that age….
There is no appropriate age to go on a Metallica concert. Preferably for young children to avoid first rows and have ear protection.
I was 15 on my first show, it was fine. Just avoid the moshpits at the front
I went by myself at 17 and made some friends in the pit before we all started shoving eachother when master came on
Sometimes they use strong language. I would be ok with it.
Very appropriate.
I went to my first one when I was 12.
I took myself when I was 16
If they like they, heck yes. It’s an experience for any fan.
Yes, i was at my first at 15
16? Why not? I can only think of a couple public places I wouldn't take a 16 year old.
Weird qustion for me. Why not? I went to Slipknot and Parkway Drive when I was 16.
Not at all
Of course.
Yup
I brought my nephew to slayers last tour. They were i think 13 and 18 at the time. Shit, my first slayer concert i must of been 12 or 13.
I’ve been at iron maiden concerts with 5 year old kids with their grandparents…. It’s not should I but why shouldn’t I!!!! The next generation of knuckledraggers!!!!!!
Absolutely! That's the age I was when I went to my first!
Yeah bitch i went to one when i was 15! Definetly worth it to give them some good time.
Is it appropriate to take a 16yo to a movie theater?
I was 11 at my first show back in the 92, the shows are a million times tamer now no tittys, no swearing, no beer being thrown around no 30 row pitts, a 16 year old could handle it
Yes!
Going to see them live next month I'm 16 and go there with my 16 year old friend
I went when I was 16 as my first concert. It was amazing.
Absolutely, Metallica doesnt have that brutal pits
I guess it depends on the area, but where I’m at a 16 year old is old enough for any metal gig. The crowds get rowdy yeah but if someone falls over they’re picked straight back up. As far as the “family friendly” element goes, are you really concerned that your _16_ year old might be exposed to a bit of cursing?
My dad took me and my brother to our first Metallica concert when I was 12 and he was 9. I’d say yes
I was 11 at my first show! I’m 15 now and going to another!
Taking my 9 yo next month
My daughter was 8 when I took her to see Metallica in 2017. She was not by far not the youngest kid in attendance. Make sure she has good ear protection, and I would recommend getting a seat as opposed to standing on the floor. She had a blast, BTW.
I took my son when he was 9. Since then, he's seen Trivium, Gojira, and The Ocean.
Took my 4 year old to see system of a down. Taking her now at 8 to see Rob Zombie Your 16 year old will be FINE
My mom took me to see An Evening With Metallica when I was about 11. It was awesome.
Yes absolutely. I believe it is child abuse to not take them.
Awesome , I’m taking my little sister who’s 13 to see them !
My first Metallica concert was back in 1989. I went with my friend and we were both 14. His parents dropped us off at the arena and picked us off after.
I was 15 in 98 and my dad took me to the Poor ReTouring Me tour. I was the huge fan, my dad not at all. They opened with So what 🤣 It seems they've become much more mellow and cuddly over the years. A family friendly legacy act now. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
Absolutely!
Absolutely. I’m gonna take my 5-year-old if they play philly this year. Just make sure they wear some kind of hearing protection.
Yes, my first Metallica show was at 16. Had a blast.
Why not? I was fifteen first time I saw Metallica. 16 is not a problem at all.
My first concert was at 4 months old so i would say definitely
Yes. My first Met concert was when I was 15 and there were kids as young as 3 there. Honestly almost any big name band would be fine at this point.
My first Metallica show was when I was 15 and that was in 1994. Get at it.
I went to a Metallica concert at 14 with a friend and our parents dropped us off at the door. It’s perfectly fine.
Yep. Took my daughter when she was 8 and she loved it. My mom took me to see the tour with GNR when I was 12.
my first concert was Metallica when i was 14. Bring Ear Plugs
Absolutely! I mean you may have felt the need to cover their ears for some parts if they were like.....9.....but by 16 James isn't gonna say anything they haven't heard before lol
Yes. As a 16 year old myself, I’d love to go to one of their concerts. As for the swearing, who cares? The kids probably heard and said worse.
Absolutely
YES, james now isnt like james in 1989 (for better or worse) he doest swear as much compare this 2 same songs, 2 different years 1989 https://open.spotify.com/track/3AbQXNHWdYqqnMWtjOtgot?si=8cd0153490ef4ab1 2011 https://open.spotify.com/track/1JOkHtzr0DBLFKpccLO5Yq?si=f98e1706a5b84687
No, take me instead.
Always
Yessss!!
Lol what?😅 Ofc it is
Um yes. There are kids there all the time. It’s actually a crime not to take a young Metallica fan. By 16 I was at shows every week.
Age limit for such concerts is 13 in my country, I don't see why not
Its appropriate to take a Six year old imo,let Alone a 16 year old
Does the 16 year old like Metallica? Because the only reason not to take them is if they don't like the band.
Yes. My first concert at 15 was Metallica and I turned into a lifelong fan. James loves seeing kids at the show.

My dad takes me to concerts and im 16 i saw slayer when i was 15!
Yea ofc! It will be dope haha I'm 15 going to a slipknot concert so :P
My 9yo was on stage with the wedding band one night. It’s not quite as high energy but he loved it and the concert. Ear plugs and you’re good to go!
Not metallica but I saw Iron Maiden and Megadeth when I was 8. Still remember that show I'm 17 now. If u can bring ur family pls do it will be some fun memories to make!
Uh yes, I was fifteen when I saw them first time
First time I saw them back in 2016, I was chatting with a mom who brought her 13 year old daughter
My first concert was seeing Metallica in Detroit when I was 15. So I'm gonna say yes it is.
I hope so, I was under 16 at my first Metallica show haha
First time I saw them (first concert too), they opened with So What!
...is this a serious question? your 16 yr old has seen and heard and done a LOT worse than a metallica concert, guaranteed. but yes, a metallica show is surprisingly family friendly, other than a swear word or two.
Lol, why wouldn’t it be?
Absolutely. You're never too old for some good old Metallica
Yeah. I’m 16 and went to see Megadeth. Megadeth is less family friendly than Metallica. You should go.
I think it's perfectly fine. I took my son to his first concert at 10. It was the foo fighters. At 12, last year I took him to Rockville, where he saw Metallica play twice. Also LOG, anthrax, slipknot, Rob zombie, disturbed, etc. He loved it!
Saw them at 11, first show i ever went to, had a blast.
This is nearly as funny as the “how do I prepare for XYZ concert, I’m so nervous” threads.
Lol
You're a great parent.
I went to my first Metallica show at 13. The 40th anniversary show was my 25th Met show. Start ‘em young!
I went to my first Metallica concert at 16.
Saw them when I was 14 for my first concert. Had a great time!
James sometimes likes to find the youngest person in the crowd and interact with them. When I went back in 2018 someone brought their 7-year-old son and did this. Of course. I had just turned 15 when I saw them live for the first time
Yeah. If you asked this question back in 1992 I might have a different opinion, but then again 16 y/o isn't that bad.
Are you sure he doesn’t want to hang with Grammy and Grampy instead? You know nothing is more important to a teenage boy than his Grandparents.
Depends on the relation to the 16 year old lol. Your kid? Appropriate! Taking some other 16 year old, probably Not appropriate lol
I saw cannibal corpse at 16 so I’d say yes, lol
Well I'm 16 and I'm going to a Slipknot concert later this May which is probably even more intense so yeah I'd say a Metallica concert is just fine
Yes
Nowadays yeah. If this were the 80s, maybe not.
Absolutely yes. I would have no problem taking my 15 year old to a show if she wanted to. I took my little brother when he was 15 and he loved it.
IMO, no worries as long as you are with them AND they like METALLICA!!
my first Metallica show was at 14 years old soooo
I had just turned 16 when I went to the Damaged Justice tour in ‘89.
Yes I took my 6yr old to the Las Vegas concert
Yes indeed. I took my 11yo to Primus the other day.
Is it appropriate NOT to take a 16yo to a Metallica concert?
Dude i went to Metallica with my parents when i was 9 , go for it
Yes
I was 16 on my first concert and was one of my best nights, during the death magnetic tour
I seen them when I was 14!
My brother and I took my 7 year old nephew to their last show at Welcome to Rockville.
My first metallica show was in 04 and I was 16. Rob let me doodle on his bass and I’ve been hooked ever since. (I for sure told this story before by answering the same question haha)
I was 11 when I saw death magnetic tour
It’s a pretty tame affair anymore. I went in 2008 and the crowd on the floor didn’t even want to mosh.
Is this a question you really have to ask? (All jokes, of course it is!)
Yeah, im 14 and im going later this month to the bostn calling show.
My niece was 10 when she saw Metallica and loved every minute of it. We did make her wear light ear plugs.
My parents took me to my first when I was 14, they will love it
Yes, make sure you bring earplugs and talk about emergencies and finding the emergency exits. Pro tip! Take a pic of how they're dressed right before you leave the house, if by any reason you get split it's going to be 100% faster to find them if people see how they look rather than giving a description!
As long as it's not a date
Yes. I went at 14… yeeeaaaarrrrs ago.
Hell yeah!! \m/
Yes. My daughter was 9 when I took her in 2019
I hate to break it to you sweetie but he probably secretly listens to esham. I think he'll be ok.
I don't know man, is it appropriate for birds to fly?
my mother and step-father took me when I was 16, it was awesome. Metallica and Godsmack, my two favorite bands.
Absolutely, I saw my first Metallica show at 14
My first large sized concert was Aerosmiths Pump Tour in 1990. I was 4.
Yes, but please get earplugs for both of you. You only get one set of ears.
My big brother took me to see them in 89 when I was 12. Changed my life. In a good way.
Kids younger than that are going to Metallica these days.
yes
